[SOLVED] Gio battery not charging - Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660

I want to mention this first: The, USB-connector is FINE. There is nothing wrong with it. I have cleaned it, USB fits tight and wiggling the plug does nothing. The contacts on the connector and the cable looks fine, not bent or anything. I have taken the phone apart and I checked the connector and nearby components with multimeter, it pushes 5V to the components near the connector, without the battery connected.
The problem is that when I insert the USB-cable to the phone, the battery goes to 0% and the phone shuts down. Then the phone shows an image of a battery + exclamation mark in yellow triangle. If I turn the phone on and insert the USB-cable on the GIO-screen, it will not shut down until I remove the cable or reinsert it (it depends). At that stage the USB-connection is fully working, removable drive, tethering, adb, etc. It will not charge though.
I checked the voltage on the battery connecor, it was under 2V. On my Galaxy Y and my sisters Galaxy Trend, it was around 4-5V. This could mean, that this is an hardware issue? Is there anywhere a diagram of the circuit, so I know what to check? Basically on the front side, everything I checked near the USB-connector was around 4-5V, but on the back side, it was under 2V.
The warranty has been expired about an year ago, so I cannot send it to warranty repair.
EDIT: I solved it! But I did not manage to locate the problem though. It was an hardware issue, for sure. I put the phone in oven for 5 minutes to reflow everything. Apparently there was a cracked solder joint somewhere.

[Q] Battery not charging issue. How to fix?

I have GSM Galaxy Nexus bought from eXpansys USA .
The problem is it often shows charging sign, while in reality it is not charging. And it drains battery like crazy. More over, when you actually connect the charger, it will not charge it, though the charging icon is on on the task bar.
Rebooting doesn't help. You can only fix it by removing battery. But next day it is the same. I've tryed to factory reset it - no use.
The frimware is 4.0.1. Mine didn't get OTA. I'm wondering if I upgrade it manually will it loose the warranty (since I have to root)?
The problem is described here also:
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-galaxy-nexus-owners-report-battery-problem-50006595/
What can you suggest?
Thanks.
I had this same problem and found a massive Google thread on this:
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...um&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
Personally, I discovered it was a hardware, and not a software issue. The female USB port on the phone itself has an electrical contact in the middle. This was bent down so that it nearly touched the bottom of the phone.
Because of the larger tolerance on the female port, it's possible to shove the USB plug in and push the metal contact to the bottom. This means you've never really plugged the cord in, because the female contact isn't touching any of the metal contacts on the male side. This results in all sorts of weird OS issues, including the OS reporting it's "Not Charging" when it's on AC, and booting up with a charged icon and never changing.
I took a knife and while the phone was off, I just pushed the metal contact back up. Booted it up and volia, charging again (with the OS responding immediately).
So now I'm just very careful when plugging charging cables in.
However, the thread I linked has a lot of people reporting other problems, so I don't know if my little hardware fix will work for you.

Phone syas its charging when not plugged in

Phone recently keeps saying it's charging even though it's not plugged into anything. When the phone enters the charging state the LCD turns on.
This intermittent problem, when bad can keep the LCD screen on for hours.
Anyone else experiencing this?

I tried doing a factory reset, I'm running stock ROM and haven't even unlocked the boot loader.
Sounds like maybe it's a hardware problem. To make sure, flash a stock rom using the GNex Toolkit and see if it improves. If not, re-lock the bootloader and send it in for warrantee.
Any other ideas?
i had this happen to a focus s. no matter what i did, i couldn't get rid of it. i think it's a short in the usb slot on the device. i had to rma my focus s and replace it.
Sounds like a damaged or dirty USB connector. Had this happen on a couple of phones. Clean the phone's USB input connector with either compressed air and or a soft tooth brush dabbed (not soaked) with some electrical contact cleaner or 99% alcohol and let it dry. Power off and remove the battery before trying either method. Is the phone water damaged or has it been in subjected to a damp area (sweaty pocket) for any length of time?
Hopefully it's just dirty and not damaged.
My phone has started doing this recently too. I haven't tried electrical cleaner, but I have attempted to blow it out with compressed air and clean it out with a pin. I can't seem to fix the issue, but I have found a good workaround...
After charging the phone (or having a USB cable attached for syncing) and removing the cable, if the the phone still thinks that it's charging, I simply power it off and remove the battery for a second. Re-insert the battery and power the phone back on... that's it... my phone will no longer be stuck in charging mode. Simply power cycling the phone doesn't work, I have to physically remove the battery for a second.
I had this issue with mine too, also when plugged in it would show charging, buy battery starts said "not charging." Sent it to Samsung for warranty repair, they claimed it was overheating and had to replace a part. Free repair though!

Bad usb..return to full stock?

Hi all, I had rooted my wife's phone months ago and off and on she started having usb problems... I finally got fed up with messing with it. (Computer would not recognize it off and on, would not charge when plugged in intermittently, would think it was plugged in when it wasn't)..the biggest thing was it would randomly go into dock mode..
So I went back to sfhubs rooted stock el29.. decided the best bet was to accept the ota to make sure it wasn't a software issue. Now her phone is in a limbo of no root access but still has Su and mobile Odin as system apps but i can not gain su access and they can't be UN installed I would like to either regain root or get back to stock the phone is under warranty and the bad usb is a known issue that doesn't rear it's ugly head until the ics update. Is there any way to fix this since I can't connect it to a computer?
Also it will not boot into Odin mode just does a regular reboot. I can get into stock recovery though..
Thanks for any help.

Bad USB connector
Many people have experienced this problem. It seems to be related to a dirty or corroded USB connector. Symptoms could include:
- loss of USB connection,
- "Charging paused, Voltage too high" alert,
- charging led on, even when disconnected.
- battery does not fully charge, although it indicates 100% charge,
- phone won't boot unless connected to power (charger/PC),
- Car mode activates on its own
Took my Epic Touch 4G to Sprint Store for repairs under Asurion warranty. Upon disassembly and inspection, they found traces of corrosion in the USB connector, and marked its as water damaged, even though the moisture sensor labels were Ok, This unit has never been immersed or close to a wet environment. My best guess is that the corrosion could have been caused by condensation on a poorly constructed connector.
The bottom line is that to get it replaced under warranty, I will have to pay the $100 deductible to Asurion for a refurbished unit.
To try to fix it yourself, google android central Epic 4G Touch corrosion charging port post for some suggestions (sorry, cannot post link).I did try most but was not able to get rid of the problem, but some people have.
If you still have problems and feel like attempting the repair yourself, you can purchase the USB Power Connector Board for approx $ 27 at cellphone-repair-shop dot com and search for touch-4g-micro-sd-pcb-reader-assembly-and-flex-cable (sorry again, cannot post link)
The third option would be to fork over $ 100 to Asurion,
Good luck
What about this? Power off the phone and remove the battery. Hold the power button down for a few seconds. Get some rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush with soft bristles. Pour some alcohol onto the toothbrush then give it a light shake so it's not dripping wet. Lightly brush the inside of the USB port at all angles. Don't be really rough with it. After you're done, closely blow into the port with some effort. After that, let the phone air dry for an hour before replacing the battery and powering up. Rubbing alcohol evaporates quickly but an hour is playing it safe. Don't pour it into the phone, just get the brush wet but not dripping wet.
I had the same problem...use >>> DeoxIT D100 <<< it fixed my usb port issues for good.

WEIRD charging issues

This is my girlfriend's phone, so I can't tell for sure if it's been dropped or what have you.
Phone will no longer charge when connected to USB. We have 5 different USB cables and none of them work. I have an extended battery in the phone right now and it's at 26%. Phone seems to work fine aside from the fact that I can't charge it. When USB is connected, the charging light does not turn on. Weirder still, the phone does not show the Status Bar icons or notifications. It's just a plain black strip.
Tried to switch the extended battery back for the stock battery (which isn't charged at all) and of course the phone won't power on or charge still.
And the kicker: when I connect it to my computer via USB, the computer powers off. I'm guessing the faulty part in the phone is trying to draw too much power from the USB and the computer is shutting down to protect itself? Or maybe the PSU just can't hack it and is cutting off?
Seems to me like something must be damaged internally in the Phone but I have no clue what part it is.
My phone (Evo 3D) is charging fine on all cables, even when connected to computer (no shut down).
Evo 4g
Rooted/S-OFF
Jellybread 1.3
Sounds to me sir, like the usb port is borked, its shorting out the power supply,i would stop messing with it before it shorts out the mother board on the phone and send it to someone to replace it,also if you have a voltage meter you can check the port that way to see if it is indeed receiving and/or pushing power.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus charging issues...

A while back, after sweating profusely into my phone during a workout session, my gnex started behaving badly when I wanted to charge it. Needless to say I've got a battery app installed that is able to detect the plugin state (whether the phone is on battery, whether the charger is plugged in or whether it's just a usb connection such as a computer) and actual % voltage the thing has in the status bar. The app itself is: Battery by MacroPinch.
Well I figured the usb port was probably going so I got a new one of those (i.e. flex cable microusb etc.) for my sch-i515. I also decided to get a new battery just in case... so I replaced the battery (it's an oem samsung one) and fwiw, the thing stabilized its behavior! I've since swapped them back and forth with no apparent issues. However, I took my phone out with me on a run and it started acting flakey again. I've (in the past) had to clean out the port with a toothpick, I've had to on occasion bend the flap in there, do battery pulls (which believe it or not worked for a while), and so on. This time however was different. The phone wouldn't wake when I plugged in or unplugged the charger... and in no way shape or form would the charge indicator come on (you know, lightning bolt in the batter icon etc.) and to make matters even worse this time, my laptop simply didn't recognize the phone was plugged in. So I bit the bullet and and did the surgery and replaced the usb board and mic.
It could not have gone more smoothly, unfortunately (as might have guessed) all is not well... so now:
if the screen is dark -
the phone will wake when the charger is plugged in
the phone will wake when the charger gets unplugged
Using a moto droid cable (from my og droid)
the phone/computer realize they are plugged in together and Wug's NRT works and so on.
BUT the battery STILL won't charge.
I guess the phone is a couple of years old and it doesn't really owe me anything (I guess) but I'd really like this thing working better until I can get a new one. Does anybody out there have any ideas on what I might have missed? The phone works as before, exactly fine except it won't chare so I'm pretty sure I managed to get all the connectors back together properly... I suppose the usb port I replaced the original with might be defective but....
Any help is greatly appreciated...
Oh I'm rooted but stock, android 4.2.2
No advice at all??
I WOULD have said bad usb port, MAYBE try another? They are cheap enough, mine has been broken forever and I do not want to take device apart to change it because crack in my screen I'm worried will get worse if I take device apart.
so since its impossible for me to charge battery in device, I'm NOT worried about THAT tho, BECAUSE a LONG while back I had purchased 2 extra OEM batteries, PLUS a OEM samsung EXTERNAL CHARGER/stand which ALSO came with a battery. so I NOW have 4 total batteries, and I charge them up in the external charger, then just swap them out as needed.
which honestly is GREAT, cuz if I'm going out all day, I can just bring my extra fully charged batteries with me, and not have to worry about battery drain from heavy use cuz I have 3 other fully charged ones WITH me.
that's really all I can say, if you would like help finding the exact external charger that comes with a battery as well let me know, I had bought mine on amazon couple YEARS ago for only like 25-30$ BRAND NEW, I'm guessing TODAY that price would be like ten bucks
Thanks... that may be the way to go but I use this thing for my gps... but the thing doesnt get power when plugged in at all it seems (I plug it in, pull the battery and it does not stay on) so far I've been using my wife's gnex to charge my main and spare... but like I said the thing is, the phone doesn't even stay on when plugged in and I pull the battery (hers does so I'm thinking that there may be something deeper in that's failed here). I cracked the thing back open last weekend to make sure all the connectors were engaged, but I did not find any issues with them past that point.
Does anyone know if there is a hidden connecter somewhere in there that i could possibly have accidentally unhooked that prevents input power from reaching the guts of this thing?
OK it's getting crazier all the time...
Since my gnex was "working" except for charging (also, the phone would not stay powered on with the usb plugged in and the battery removed) I decided to go for a long run yesterday... I take the phone with me for music, tracking and general "safety". About half-way through my run, I look at the window in the neoprene armband I'm using and it looks like a sauna... the bluetooth cuts out on me... so I pull the phone out and with a minimum of fiddling I get the music back on... regarding the charging issue ... I was using my wife's gnex to charge my two oem batteries.
Well after this run, I try and use voice to text in a text message after I got home... well guess what... the phone records NOTHING. It's like I'm not talking. So I try a few phone calls... the display shows the call in progress, but I hear nothing! So I use my land-line to call the phone... NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING.
I had previously replaced the usb port, so I took out the tools and disassembled the phone. there was some moisture in there... anyway I dry it out as best I can and reassemble. Now I plug in the headphones, and guess what... I make calls... i.e. the damn phone works as a phone. I pull the jack out and nothing. I turn on speaker mode ... I can hear the phone ringing when I place a call... turn off speaker nothing. Bluetooth works with the phone fine, and the volume control for multimedia makes no sound when I toggle it...
Fast forward to today. I disassemble it again thinking I might have not reconnected one of the straps... I disconnect the volume rocker connector and the usb port connecter plus I remove and re install the antenna housing.
NOW the phone CHARGES but no lightning bolt indicator in the battery... but the battery level is CLEARLY increasing! Also when I plug into a laptop, the usb debugging symbol comes on (since I have it enabled) but when I unplug it does NOT go away... I unplug, disable usb debugging it goes away... reenable usb debugging and the symbol comes back without the phone plugged in until reboot.... but now the phone WORKS again as a phone!
so now the phone:
charges but without any visual indication (other than the % reporting of the battery widget I use)
phone recognized by my laptop (which wasnt' working either until I reset some of the connectors today), but unplugging doesn't make usb debugging indicator in status bar go away.
Phone speaker and mic now working without having to use bluetooth, plug-in headphones or speaker phone. (mic was not working with speakerphone turned)
This is just too messed up. My sweat does carry a lot of salt.... and Im wondering if I managed to shake something loose... I did also pry the usb tab up a bit as well...
Is there some way... some fluid I can dunk the phone into, which might clean the thing without destroying it?
My galaxy nexus after some drops not charging.
It can only work only when i have connected with my laptop, charger.
I think usb port is ok.
I must buy a charging port to make that work?
