I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, please excuse my ignorant.
I have an EVO that won't charge. I've read a lot from Google search results that this is a common problem among many users. However, the port seems to be working, because my computer will recognize the phone and storage when I plug it in. The charge led will come on, and the indicator on the phone will say that it's charging, but the phone is actually only discharging while plugged in. Eventually the led will turn itself off, and the phone stops telling me that it's charging when the battery is down to its last drop.
I hope that someone with similar problem can help me with fixing this, or if anyone cause tell me if it's possible to fix? I want to send it in to HTC since I think the phone is under warranty, even if I don't have the protection plan from Sprint? The problem is the touch glass is cracks, and I don't know if they'll fix the USB port without saying that I broke it and won't cover that under the warranty. I want to buy a new screen and replace the broken one, but if I open up the phone it would void the warranty as well...
So I'm stuck with a discharging phone, cracked screen, and having to carry around 3 separate batteries everyday, and I have no idea what step I need to take.
Please help?
Have you tried plugging it into another charger? It may just be the charger that is screwed up. If this behavior pattern is consistent across multiple chargers then you may want to talk to Sprint to see what options you have.

Doubt it's the charger as it was stated that the computer connection works - should get a bit of a charge from that. I agree that a Sprint visit is due.
Just went through this myself! Would plug my phone in before bed and wake up with the phone at 2% or so. Thought it was the battery- so i took my battery to have the sprint store check it, they did say it was bad. So i bought 2 batteries off ebay.
I got the batteries and still had the issue. So then I took my phone to the sprint store and had them check the micro-usb port. They said it was fine and they cleaned it out cause dirt/dust was in it. Still had the problem..
So I bought a new micro-usb cable of monoprice (still using the same wall charger) , and that solved the issue! Had a bad cable. Now my phone charges super quickly in matter of 4hrs.
It could still be the charger. The USB cable sends data and power through different pins. So a bad cable could still transfer data while not pushing a charge.

It's gotta be the port happen to mine and I was able to get it fix as long as the port was still attached to the motherboard, if its not attached then have to go thru the insurance.
EVO with Identity Crisis
I was able to connect to my computer and send data just fine with the old (broken) usb cable.
I've tried three different cable and a car charger, same result; they all say the phone is charging but it only gets discharged. USB/storage connection works. Last time the Sprint store said the battery is faulty, but I have 3 different ones and neither will get charged with the phone plugged in, an external charger will work.

Definitely sounds like a port issue then. If you return to Sprint and review what you've done, as well as the result of your previous trip, then they should be able to take care of you. If they try to tell you it's the battery again just stand your ground. Good luck.
I had a similar issue. I tried everything. It wasn't until I found my HTC cable that it started charging again. I work in IT and tried cables from everything I could get my hands on (blackberries, external drives etc. ) The cable that came with my phone was the only thing that worked.

If you replaced the port yourself, I would love to know how to do it!
Took the phone back to Sprint and they said there's nothing they can do. I don't have the protection plan so I couldn't even pay the $100 to get it replaced (although I probably wouldn't as I can upgrade my contract and get a new phone soon). They also told me that HTC wouldn't cover it under their warranty because the screen is cracked and they will blame that on me for misused. I tried to check the warranty policy on HTC, but the page is not even available. Does anyone have experience dealing with HTC? I bought a replacement screen, I'd like to replace the screen but don't want to open up the phone if there's a chance HTC will fix the USB port...
HTC EVO 4G Won't - Stopped Charging Battery Issue
Hey Guys,
Two nights ago I woke up to an EVO that was plugged in with a Cellet
extractable charging cord, as it is just about every night. But, the phone was
still showing that it was charging the battery, animation with lighting bolt,
at only 50% charged after about 6.5 hours of charging. Hmmm....
The latter after trying to charge in the coffee shop first with Cellet chord in the
wall then a portable 3500mah solar portable charger; the phone not seeming to
charge at or past 50% charged.
My EVO is rooted but still with the stock ROM and the gingerbread 2.3.3 OTA
update. The battery is a Seido 1750mah and SetCPU is at 245 - 998mhz. The
phone has only been rooted for a few weeks, but I don't see where rooting
would interfere with battery charging.
I've pulled the battery out, several times to no avail. Switched back to the
stock battery, same results. However, if the battery is less than 50% full
the phone will charge the battery to 25% or 50%, weird. If the battery is
at 75% or more full, the phone will top off the charge to a green LED at 100%,
sometimes. Sometimes it won't fully charge the battery. Weird.
I read different posts regarding poor USB chords so I pulled out the stock
micro USB to USB, a charge only chord I figured, and am trying to top
off the Seido battery, which it seems to be doing as it's now full green but
still charging as the animation shows the bolt in the battery and the LED
is still orange.
If put the batteries in the Seido wall charger, the thing the size of a deck
of cards, both batteries fully charge.
I also use Screen Off by Iwashi Soft. That app has worked pretty well with just
a little funkiness now and then. However, while plugged in, I hit the power
button, instead of the home button to turn on the home screen. The phone
wouldn't open to any screen nor would turn on or off. So I ended up
yanking the battery to turn it off then reinstalled battery and turned phone back
on. I don't know if that had any effect on the charging issue, but I took
the icon off the homescreen and am using the power button only, for now.
I don't think both batteries are faulty at the same time at this point. I
don't know if the screen off app caused some wake issue that interferes with
charging the battery.
I do know that when plugging in the phone to charge there's a bit of clunkiness
initially as the phone locks for a second before allowing use for screen or app
and that's always been the case since the gb update. Also, the LED doesn't
always turn green from amber when fully charged with the screen off until
you reboot or use the phone in some way while still plugged in. So there is
some kind of wake issue in the stock ROM. But the latter has never stopped
the battery from charging.
I do know that Plume, the twitter app, started acting clunky with not updating
in the background unless I opened the app at least once after a reboot. But
I don't know if the latter is a wake issue.
Battery still seems normal. Heavy normal use, lots of SMS, tweets, Pulse reading,
Dolphin browsing, I'll kill 50% or more of the battery in 4+ hours. Otherwise, the
phone mostly in standby with periodic email and twitter reads, the battery lasts
all day or more than 24 hours. But the latter rarely happens anymore because I'm
a user.
The battery just went full charge with the stock charging cable just now.
This morning, I woke up with a dead phone, auto shutoff even though it was
plugged in which I did after solitaire and before going to sleep; as a charging
test.
I don't know if it's the phone or the Cellet retractable cord or both that's
stopping the battery from fully charging normally and consistently. I'll need
to get another data-charge combo chord and do more testing; and a new ROM.
Any ideas anybody?
try a new rom and also try using the stock charger and usb cable. Check inside your usb port on your phone for dust as well. Also go into recovery and wipe your battery stats. In the wipe menu for amonRa and under advanced (maybe here, i dont use cwm on my phone) in clockworkmod. also wipe your dalvik-cache just to clear any issues you may have, restart and give it a test. good luck
I just bought a phone with a broken charger port. Broke clean off the board, so my next step is to try to get liquid solder and stick it to the board. Did you take ur phone apart to see if the port is lose?
So I used the stock USB charging chord. Sure enough, it charged the phone.
Then I tried the portable charger at the coffee shop, worked. So the Cellet retractable
chord obviously had a short or something damaged/shorted for the charging part of
the cable after a year + of use and abuse.
What I don't understand, and haven't researched, is why there are charge only
chords; the stock USB HTC chord charges the phone, but the PC won't recognize
the phone's Micro SD card or the phone as an external drive. I presume the duo use
chords have a data path as well as a charging path. And yes, I know to switch the
phone from charge only to disk drive. The Cellet chord would provide the PC with
recognition for the phone's drive.
Considering the latter, what I'm not sure of, and haven't researched, is why when
the phone stopped charging, the chord eventually stopped charging, the phone
status still showed it as charging; the amber LED light on and the battery icon
in charging animation with white bolt showing? I presume that the charging path
still triggered the charging status, except once when I turned the screen back
on the battery icon was not animated and the white bolt not showing so I unplugged
the chord then plugged it back in where the battery icon animation continued.
Fortunately, or not, this forum returned 600+ results for 'battery not charging' and after
sifting through a few, the charging chord was mentioned which prevented a Sprint trip
and me contacting Seido; thankfully.
So I think manufacturers and ROM/kernel developers should visit this issue as a chord
that actually is not charging, or charging at an absurdly low rate, should trigger some alert
and not show a battery icon animation that appears to be charging normally.
I've been going nuts with this problem, that if the phone is being charged with usb cable plugged in, when I press "Power off" the phone will shut down and automatically restarts itself.
If I unplug the cable the phone can power off fine, but when it's in power off state, as soon as I plug in the cable, it starts itself automatically just as if I pressed and held the power button which I didn't.
What's going on?????????? Please help.
Clarify: it's not that the screen turns on, it's the phone actually turns on / boots / starts.
EDIT:
Did a little research, my problem is the same as here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209918
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=689248
I noticed with mine, the only time it started up automatically was when I didn't have the USB cable plugged in fully to the wall charger.
I think that the phone can somehow detect either resistance or capacitance changes in the USB connection and turns on under certain circumstances, while it is supposed to stay off if the resistance / capacitance values are "normal".
it's normal for the screen to turn ON when you plug in the USB cable
it's NOT normal for the Phone to turn ON from OFF when you plug in the USB cable
the normal behaviour for when the Phone is completely OFF when you plug in the USB cable it should just show you the green battery meter charging

I doubt it's a defective unit because it used to be fine. Just happened yesterday.
Everything is stock right now.
try a different charger/cable. if it still happens return it.
I had this problem after wiping my battery status and draining it all the way down. After charging over night, I then ran battery calibrator the next day and when i ran it all the way down again and plugged it in the problem was solved. Hasnt happened since (since 2 days ago when this happened anyway).
very interesting
Mine turns on when I plug in a usb cable while the phone is turned off following a battery stuck at 100% condition. In other words, if my phone is stuck at 100% (usually every time after charging), and I turn the phone off, and then plug in the usb cable, the phone will turn on by itself. But if my phone is not stuck at 100%, and I turn the phone off and then plug in the cable, I get the green battery.
Screen was frozen,
So, took battery out and restarted, fine.....froze on HTC screen for like 8 min (really bright one)...so took out battery again...now nothing...zip...nada.
USB cord...computer will not recognize phone, just says device error...no green light ontop, no factory re-set options.
Think phone is well and truely fried..
Any suggestions?? Not even a year old.
Does the notification LED light up at all, for example orange blinking/solid to show charging when connected to power? If not, it could be a dud battery.
Nope, no led at all when connected to power supply or usb cable. Battery was fine earlier, when taken out and usb connected I don't get anything but when battery in and connecting usb the computer does its usual 'ping' that something is connected but nothing shows on the lists (ie, extra drive)....

Well, if youre phone isnt turned on, it wont see it as a device therefore no ping.
Does it not turn on at all? Check if battery is correctly in and if your cable may be broken.

I had this problem on my old HTC HD2...zero power one day...turned out to be the actual usb port on the phone itself.....it had broken away from the main board at the soldering joints, but was hardly even loose or noticeable until taken apart.
Try a new battery first and cable - borrow off a friend/colleague or just buy cheap off Ebay.
If not working, then i'd take it to a competent repair place......but unless you're loaded with cash, NOT take it to HTC, coz the repair job will be good, but the cost will be........OUCH!

Does anyone know where I can order the USB charging board for the LTE model?
I may have pumped a little too much voltage into (5.3v) when messing with my DCDC-USB power supply.
Now the tablet thinks its plugged in when its not. Also thinks its not plugged in when it is, but the battery still charges?
It won't talk to my computer, because it seems to be sending data OUT to my switched USB hub(hub lights up when in off position).
I ordered and replaced the battery and that fixed none of these issues. Can't find the charging board to order
Help please!
Thanks.
You try letting it go completely dead then charge it?
Yup, I let it go totally flat. Took about a week, so I know the battery is holding a charge.
The replacement battery shows less signs of damage. In the 40%-~90% range it works as intended. Shows charging when plugged in, Discharging when not plugged in. Somewhere above 90% it seems to think it's still plugged in when it isn't. So it has to discharge a bit before it will function correctly.
The old battery PROBABLY isn't damaged, but the range in which it works correctly and in correctly is MUCH more random.
I SHOULD have warrantied it before I decided to replace the battery.
I mean for the most part its fine, however, being a car install, I kind of need Tasker to work its magic depending upon charging state. And since that's messed up, Tasker won't work as intended.
Replacement USB Charge Charging Port Power Board for Nexus 7 Tablet 2013 LTE
I know this is an old thread but I'm looking for the same board, did you ever find out where to get it from?
A while back, after sweating profusely into my phone during a workout session, my gnex started behaving badly when I wanted to charge it. Needless to say I've got a battery app installed that is able to detect the plugin state (whether the phone is on battery, whether the charger is plugged in or whether it's just a usb connection such as a computer) and actual % voltage the thing has in the status bar. The app itself is: Battery by MacroPinch.
Well I figured the usb port was probably going so I got a new one of those (i.e. flex cable microusb etc.) for my sch-i515. I also decided to get a new battery just in case... so I replaced the battery (it's an oem samsung one) and fwiw, the thing stabilized its behavior! I've since swapped them back and forth with no apparent issues. However, I took my phone out with me on a run and it started acting flakey again. I've (in the past) had to clean out the port with a toothpick, I've had to on occasion bend the flap in there, do battery pulls (which believe it or not worked for a while), and so on. This time however was different. The phone wouldn't wake when I plugged in or unplugged the charger... and in no way shape or form would the charge indicator come on (you know, lightning bolt in the batter icon etc.) and to make matters even worse this time, my laptop simply didn't recognize the phone was plugged in. So I bit the bullet and and did the surgery and replaced the usb board and mic.
It could not have gone more smoothly, unfortunately (as might have guessed) all is not well... so now:
if the screen is dark -
the phone will wake when the charger is plugged in
the phone will wake when the charger gets unplugged
Using a moto droid cable (from my og droid)
the phone/computer realize they are plugged in together and Wug's NRT works and so on.
BUT the battery STILL won't charge.
I guess the phone is a couple of years old and it doesn't really owe me anything (I guess) but I'd really like this thing working better until I can get a new one. Does anybody out there have any ideas on what I might have missed? The phone works as before, exactly fine except it won't chare so I'm pretty sure I managed to get all the connectors back together properly... I suppose the usb port I replaced the original with might be defective but....
Any help is greatly appreciated...
Oh I'm rooted but stock, android 4.2.2
No advice at all??
I WOULD have said bad usb port, MAYBE try another? They are cheap enough, mine has been broken forever and I do not want to take device apart to change it because crack in my screen I'm worried will get worse if I take device apart.
so since its impossible for me to charge battery in device, I'm NOT worried about THAT tho, BECAUSE a LONG while back I had purchased 2 extra OEM batteries, PLUS a OEM samsung EXTERNAL CHARGER/stand which ALSO came with a battery. so I NOW have 4 total batteries, and I charge them up in the external charger, then just swap them out as needed.
which honestly is GREAT, cuz if I'm going out all day, I can just bring my extra fully charged batteries with me, and not have to worry about battery drain from heavy use cuz I have 3 other fully charged ones WITH me.
that's really all I can say, if you would like help finding the exact external charger that comes with a battery as well let me know, I had bought mine on amazon couple YEARS ago for only like 25-30$ BRAND NEW, I'm guessing TODAY that price would be like ten bucks
Thanks... that may be the way to go but I use this thing for my gps... but the thing doesnt get power when plugged in at all it seems (I plug it in, pull the battery and it does not stay on) so far I've been using my wife's gnex to charge my main and spare... but like I said the thing is, the phone doesn't even stay on when plugged in and I pull the battery (hers does so I'm thinking that there may be something deeper in that's failed here). I cracked the thing back open last weekend to make sure all the connectors were engaged, but I did not find any issues with them past that point.
Does anyone know if there is a hidden connecter somewhere in there that i could possibly have accidentally unhooked that prevents input power from reaching the guts of this thing?
OK it's getting crazier all the time...
Since my gnex was "working" except for charging (also, the phone would not stay powered on with the usb plugged in and the battery removed) I decided to go for a long run yesterday... I take the phone with me for music, tracking and general "safety". About half-way through my run, I look at the window in the neoprene armband I'm using and it looks like a sauna... the bluetooth cuts out on me... so I pull the phone out and with a minimum of fiddling I get the music back on... regarding the charging issue ... I was using my wife's gnex to charge my two oem batteries.
Well after this run, I try and use voice to text in a text message after I got home... well guess what... the phone records NOTHING. It's like I'm not talking. So I try a few phone calls... the display shows the call in progress, but I hear nothing! So I use my land-line to call the phone... NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING.
I had previously replaced the usb port, so I took out the tools and disassembled the phone. there was some moisture in there... anyway I dry it out as best I can and reassemble. Now I plug in the headphones, and guess what... I make calls... i.e. the damn phone works as a phone. I pull the jack out and nothing. I turn on speaker mode ... I can hear the phone ringing when I place a call... turn off speaker nothing. Bluetooth works with the phone fine, and the volume control for multimedia makes no sound when I toggle it...
Fast forward to today. I disassemble it again thinking I might have not reconnected one of the straps... I disconnect the volume rocker connector and the usb port connecter plus I remove and re install the antenna housing.
NOW the phone CHARGES but no lightning bolt indicator in the battery... but the battery level is CLEARLY increasing! Also when I plug into a laptop, the usb debugging symbol comes on (since I have it enabled) but when I unplug it does NOT go away... I unplug, disable usb debugging it goes away... reenable usb debugging and the symbol comes back without the phone plugged in until reboot.... but now the phone WORKS again as a phone!
so now the phone:
charges but without any visual indication (other than the % reporting of the battery widget I use)
phone recognized by my laptop (which wasnt' working either until I reset some of the connectors today), but unplugging doesn't make usb debugging indicator in status bar go away.
Phone speaker and mic now working without having to use bluetooth, plug-in headphones or speaker phone. (mic was not working with speakerphone turned)
This is just too messed up. My sweat does carry a lot of salt.... and Im wondering if I managed to shake something loose... I did also pry the usb tab up a bit as well...
Is there some way... some fluid I can dunk the phone into, which might clean the thing without destroying it?
My galaxy nexus after some drops not charging.
It can only work only when i have connected with my laptop, charger.
I think usb port is ok.
I must buy a charging port to make that work?
