Failed FLASHING S4 - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi guys, don't know if this is going on the right forum or whatever but I have a problem!
So last week I rooted and flashed my phone to 4.4.2 Google Play Edition (I'm a noob to all of this) may I add that I have a GT-i9505 model with an unlocked bootloader etc (as I have an international s4)
Phone was working fine except for a few bugs such as camera application would stop working.
So I decided to have to have a look around at another ROM to change and flash it and I found the 4.4.2 Liquidsmooth ROM (which looks pretty good and seems to be everything I need) so I started to reflash it all again (as I did before) however I have 35% battery and my flash failed with the error
'file_getprop: failed to stat "/system/build.pro" error executing updater binary in zip.
So what is it I'm doing wrong? Is it coz I'm flashing on top of another ROM? I have no idea, can someone point me in the right direction? I'm not using an ext SD card for this either!
If you can a noob version would be awesome! Thank you so much for reading this!

Ok you must wipe your old rom first but MAKE A BACK UP, firstly go into recovery (cwm or twrp) and go to "back up" and make a back up. second go to wipe and wipe cache then wipe dalvic cache (if your using cmw you will have to go to advanced on the home screen to wipe dalvic cache)
third go back to wipe and wipe system, after that wipe the cache and dalvic cache just like before
And for the final stage go to install, find the rom you want (will be a zip file) and then flash it, when done wipe cache and dalvic cache one more time then reboot
And bam you should have you new custom rom (you dont have to keep wiping the cache and dalvic cache but its recomended)

the most important thing is read, read and read the instruction before applying any flash.
I always do that and never fail

[Q] My Gnex won't get past 4.0.2 Canada

Hi I've tried to change my Build. I'm currently using Android Revolution HD. I've got the kernel the program came with - android-build. I have tried changing it over to a whole of builds. AOKP, Gummy
It never successfully launches any of them.
Every time I wipe data, cache and I wipe Dalvik too.
I don't know what to do...
Is there any one who is on Rogers that can do this?
Thanks guys

Don't really make sense??? Try to also format system in recovery ( it won't touch ur personal stuff ) then do all the other wipes then try flash another Rom if that don't work I.got nothing, if u can't figure out there's always fastboot stock Google .img
Can you provide a step-by-step instruction on how you tried to update your Galaxy Nexus ? I'm not on Rogers (I'm on TELUS), but still, maybe we can help you and see if you are following the right path !
You're not doing something right if you can't get another ROM installed.
Do this.
Make sure ROM and Gapps package for that ROM is on your SD card
Reboot into recovery
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Go to Advanced, Wipe dalvik
Go to Mounts and Storage, format system, and cache
INSTALL ROM based on 4.03
Install Gapps
Reboot and Enjoy

I would back your phone up before doing this. Formatting your system deletes the operating system.

CMW Touch usually does not play well with JB.
Try flashing with an older CMW.
Alright thanks for the help restoring back to aopk 40 and going to flash a older cwm then rebooting into cwm wipe factory and cache then JB v3 then rebooting it hope fully it works
Good luck, hope it works out for you.

[Q] updating a ROM - flash what? wipe what?

I want to update my Unofficial CM10 +3.x Kernel to the latest update from Hashcode.
UNOFFICIAL CM10 + 3.x Kernel for Kindle Fire [09/16 CHARGING+]
When you do an update like this, do you wipe everything like I did when I first flashed the ROM? I mean, when I installed, I wiped system, factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. Then I flashed the ROM and then I flashed gapps.
So now I just want to update the OS, what do I need to wipe? And will I need to flash gapps again?
CAn't ask this in the development thread 'cause my n00b hat it still too shiney.
Thanks!
A question like this doesn't belong in the development thread because it isn't development related.
If you're going from one ROM to a different one, you need to wipe System and Factory Reset (data and cache).
If the ROM is simply an update of an existing ROM, generally all you need to wipe is data and cache. There are always exceptions to this so it's always a good idea to make a backup in case things turn sour.
After installation of the ROM you have the option to wipe cache and dalvik. It isn't required but not wiping them has been known to cause some bugginess.

Thank you once again, soupmagnet. Yeah this is just an update to my current ROM. So .... I won't need to flash gapps again?
I'm slowly figuring this stuff out. hehehe... When I was 30 I picked this stuff up quick. Turning 60 on Thursday and stuff tends to need a little more pondering lately. hahaha
Anywho.... thanks
Oh, yeah. You need to flash Gapps if you wipe system.

OK, see, now you're messin' with the old man here... hehehe
On one hand I'm hearing if I am only updating my current ROM, I just wipe data and cache.
Then you tell me I have to flash gapps if I wipe System.
But prior you said I only need to wipe system if I'm going from one ROM to a different ROM.
So.... I'm just updating my current ROM. I wipe data and cache, flash the updated ROM, wipe dalvik.... done...
no flash gapps, right?
I need to look at TWRP again to see exactly how it presents the choices. Don't be hatin' on the old guy for bein' dumb now.
OK, booted to TWRP. When I select Wipe my choices are : Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, System and then External Storage. So... in your first answer to me when you said to go to a different ROM I should wipe "System and Factory Reset (data and cache)" it appears you are telling me that "System and Factory Reset" is another way of referring to "data and cache". Is that correct?
Gapps go in the /system/app folder so if you wipe the system partition, Gapps will go along with it.

GAaaahhh..... I just wiped System and watched as it processed /system
and then I wiped Factory Reset and watched as it processed /data and /cache
So I guess that answers my confusion.

Messaging and Phone apps keep crashing

Hey all,
I've been searching for a while now and decided I should just post my question finally. I have the Galaxy SIII, rooted, and running CM10 stable. For the last 3 months or so, my SMS app, Messaging, has been randomly force closing and crashing. The only way to fix it is by rebooting the phone. I've tried re-flashing the mod 5 times, and even wiped data and done 2 factory resets. Still no luck.
And more recently my "phone" app has been doing it too. It crashes when I open up the dial pad and drops calls randomly and I have to restart my phone for it to work again.
Both of these will happen randomly. Sometimes I can go 4 hours without having to restart my phone, other times I have to restart my phone every 20 minutes. It's really starting to bug me.
Is there an app that's known to cause these crashes? Or is there a possibility that the mod file is corrupt? Thoughts? Questions? Any help is appreciated!!
When you flashed Cm10, did you come from stock or a custom rom? Did you also format /system?
If you made a nandroid while on stock, I would:
Wipe data, cache, dalvik and restore that. Then (assuming you still have Cm10 and gapps zips on your device) I would wipe data and caches again, format /system and flash rom/gapps. Wipe data/cache and reboot.

When I flashed, it was from a previous CM10 ROM that worked fine. I reflashed because one of my apps was getting an "unknown" error, and now this crashing is happening. I don't think I have ever done "format /system". How do I go about that?

To have a completely clean install, you should always:
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik (under advanced)
Format /system (under mounts and storage)
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Wipe data
Reboot
Be sure to have whatever you feel important backed up as this will wipe your system. Make a nandroid first if you don't already have one

Thanks!! I'll try it tonight and post with the results tomorrow. Last time I flashed it took 2 days until the problems arose again.

There shouldn't be any issues if you have flashed correctly. Many users have also noted that a custom rom performs better when returning to stock and then flashing the new rom via the above procedures. Feel free to pm me your results
What the???

I can't see this is a good thing, but I'm a noob.
You're saying after installing the new ROM and apps (Flash rom Flash gapps), you then go back into CWM and select 'wipe data/factory reset'??
Again, I'm a noob and maybe I'm reading this wrong!
Doing a wipe again right after installing a new ROM sounds so wrong to me.
What would that do?

This step (step 7 in your list) isn't necessary.
When in doubt, follow the directions in the OP of the rom you are trying to flash, usually can't go wrong.

Newbie questions

Ok experts.
First of all, thank you for reading this post. This shows me you read the subject line and in your heart, you are willing to help others ( in this case, me ). And for that i thank you.
So...i have flashed roms before on samsung and htc devices. Why is it so hard on LG?
I downloaded a rom and gapps, opened twrp and did wipe cache, dalvik cache, system but not the data because if i do i loose everything including the rom and gapps i downloaded. Then i fashed rom wiped cache and dalvik cach, flashed gapps wipe cache and dalvik cache then fix permission then reboot and it stays stuck on bootloading screen.
Please point out to me what im doing wrong or what am i missing. I have tried flashing this rom 10 times.
Again thanks.

It looks like you're doing it right, but there's a couple things that might be missing.
You should be wiping data also. So in TWRP 2.5.0.0, select the Wipe tab, Factory Reset, then Advanced tab, and select all 4. /system, /data, /cache, /dalvik. This way you have a clean slate. DO NOT HIT THE FORMAT DATA!!! It erases /data/media.
If you're flashing CM for the first time, you need to either use teeny bins, or (I think this still works) flash the CM 10.1 ROM by Shelnutt2. This updates your partitions needed to run CM based ROM's.
Wow. It worked. I failed to notice that reseting the phone was not formating the data...so it worked.
Big thank you.
Issue solved.
