Hows the thermal throttling on this device? - LG Optimus G Pro

I had an LG Nexus 4 and while it was spec'd nicely for the time, when the phone got hot it was very bad, and LG set the thermal throttle way too low on that phone. Have they since fixed that in this phone?

I think it has been set too low on this one too, it throttles like crazy.
My S4 does a lot better than my GPro *in the heat*

Edit the thermald.conf in /system/etc. I think thermal throttling was what kept resetting my frequencies back to 1728GHz with the OC'd kernel. As soon as I bumped the last 4 settings from 1728000 (1.7GHz) to 2106000 (2.1GHz) the problem was gone as far as I know. I also removed mpdecision so that may also be the culprit.

[Q] CPU Throttling on JB 4.1

I recently installed Houstonn's JB port on an Optimus E973 and find the CPU throttling to be really aggressive compared to stock ICS. The port works perfectly for me (no wifi issues, etc), but the CPU will spend very very little time at 1.5 Ghz and will throttle down to 1.1 almost immediately. Its actually so severe that in terms of user experience, JB seems slower when you use the phone for more than a few minutes.
There was some discussion/consensus that the throttling on ICS was dependent on battery temp, but in JB it seems to depend on CPU temp now (throttling will still occur when battery is < 30C). Just wondering if anyone has a similar experience or can shed some light on this change? Thanks.
I am experiencing the same thing. Not noticing performance issues but noticing the throttling.

The throttling will happen no matter what - its to keep the cpu, battery, etc cool enough to prevent damage. I had throttling on ICS but it wasnt noticeable either. Most of the time the CPU would ramp up to 1.5 and get the job done quickly. Since I have upgraded it will only ramp up to 1.1 ghz for the most part (sometimes it will increase to 1.5, but that is uncommon).
I know that Quadrant is next to useless for comparing between phones, but I like to use it for monitoring changes in the performance of a single unit. On ICS, my LGOG would routinely get scores of 7300+ until the phone got quite warm and then it throttled down. On JB I have never seen a score above 6700 and the loss is entirely due to CPU score. Checking CPU Spy shows me that the CPU never hits 1.5ghz throughout the test, even when run on a cool phone.
Aha... found something of interest here.
The odd frequencies of this JB rom have been reported elsewhere.

[Q] Optimus G question?

Hi
Hope you are all doing well. I am coming from Optimus 3D and I was moving to S3 until I saw this device. In my country it is only available used (Korean F180 versions ~300$). I have read lots of posts and reviews and I was confused due to heating issue. Firstly is this even a issue, if yes how to check if it exist in the mobile. The sellers here have Gs in factory reset condition and not allowing me to install any game or benchmark(kind of selling in as in condition) I do realize that the mobile was constantly changing brightness even when I was just scrolling and checking camera etc(unable to brighten...). Cut short what do I need to check in approx 1/2 an hour. Thanks for your time
When I first got the phone and was running stock, unrooted, I would get the "unable to brighten due to temperature" message pretty often, but it never caused any problems other than a minor annoyance. Since rooting & running custom ROMs I've always had the screen at maximum brightness, and while it does get warm after heavy use, I've never had any problems with it.

Check this out. On the Korean phone it may be different, but I bet the same menus exist somewhere.
I'm guessing that since you live outside of America that you have the E975 model. The screen dimming and processor throttling is done to avoid overheating. You can disable it without any problems.Go to the dialer and enter 3845#*975# . It will take you to the hidden menu. Scroll all the way down to "Thermal Daemon Mitigation Off". It should be set to off by default. Switch it to on. This will stop the processor throttling and screen dimming.
thanks guys I bought it
If u set ur kernel tweaks on trickster mod then u will never get any over heating... Maybe a little warm but not overheat. When I first bought this phone I was experiencing bad overheating and that was every time I use the phone. Then I downloaded trickster mod and set the I/o scheduler and gov etc... And I never experienced overheating and my battery life went threw the roof!! And custom kernels help a lot as well.

question about thermal control

I'm on the vs985 that's the Verizon variant and was wondering if anyone knew where is the thermal control settings are found I like to adjust them so they don't throttle down the cpu so fast I've found that on the g3 all you have to be is on the phone for a few minutes and it throttles the cpu down to 1.95 then to 1.49 I think the temps to throttle it down could be adjusted a little without the chance of frying anything
Because the phone isn't even warm and it throttles the CPU down so basically I'm looking for the file that controls the thermal throttling any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank Rob
Inputting the VZW dialer codes brings up a limited menu. I'm pretty sure nothing for us so far.

Thermal-engine.conf

Could someone upload or send me the thermal-engine.conf of the G4? We are trying to figure out why the Nexus 5X throttles so much more than the Moto X/MI4C/G4 in this thread.
The G4's thermal-engine.conf would really help with that. The file should be located in system/etc.

Well, even the G4 throttles quite badly. I got very annoyed and will always delete both the thermal config files after installing a new ROM.
But since you requested, I extracted them from my stock based rom's zip.

Thanks for the files. If you think the G4 throttles badly, then never ever touch a 5X. I wonder, though, would deleting the thermal files not cause the ROM to create new ones with default values? Completely removing any kind of thermal management seems like asking for a fried phone.

But the files never got restored back and the phone is actually working a lot better without them, maybe only for me? Mine has no temperature issue even without them and I'm staying in Malaysia, a country with high temperature throughout the whole year. But indeed, the average temperature of the phone will slightly increase, but not much difference though, for the sake of much better performance it's totally worth it. :cyclops:

Maybe the CPU is just using the default values if you delete those files, or maybe it is indeed temp limit free. I would at least run some careful tests to see if the limit is gone.
A dead phone is a lot slower than a throttled one.

At least the highest CPU temperature I have got on this phone without the thermal config is about 50℃ considered my previous Xperia Z could even reach 80℃+ and is still standing strong after two and a half years. However I rarely stress the phone that much so no worries actually.

It depends on what sensors the G4 and Xperia Z got the information from. Core CPU temperature is usually a lot higher than other temps. The Nexus 5X for instance has 16 different sensors. Well, at least it shows 15 different temps.
G4 starts throttling at like 52 or 53. I might try and make a few diffrent throttle mods of this one. Mine gets pretty warm sometimes. But i crank down on mine pretty good. I live in northeastern us. And a hot day usally is 75 maybe 80. I think mi e throttles big cores to 1.2ghrts at 53. Which lags like crap. Now i know g2 and g3 had thermal mitagtions u could shut off in one of the hidden menus. They stopped the throttling. But i aint seen it on g4.
With default values the 5X throttles the big cluster at 39°C and shuts it off at 41°C. So I think the G4 does a much better job, but at the expense of higher temps on the front and back.

5x and googles new DUO

Hows everyone experience is your phone burning up like mine? My big clusters went offline very hot smh!
Never used the app but you can try setting the thermal throttling limit higher. Link is in my signature.
