[Q] CPU Throttling on JB 4.1 - LG Optimus G (International)

I recently installed Houstonn's JB port on an Optimus E973 and find the CPU throttling to be really aggressive compared to stock ICS. The port works perfectly for me (no wifi issues, etc), but the CPU will spend very very little time at 1.5 Ghz and will throttle down to 1.1 almost immediately. Its actually so severe that in terms of user experience, JB seems slower when you use the phone for more than a few minutes.
There was some discussion/consensus that the throttling on ICS was dependent on battery temp, but in JB it seems to depend on CPU temp now (throttling will still occur when battery is < 30C). Just wondering if anyone has a similar experience or can shed some light on this change? Thanks.

The throttling will happen no matter what - its to keep the cpu, battery, etc cool enough to prevent damage. I had throttling on ICS but it wasnt noticeable either. Most of the time the CPU would ramp up to 1.5 and get the job done quickly. Since I have upgraded it will only ramp up to 1.1 ghz for the most part (sometimes it will increase to 1.5, but that is uncommon).
I know that Quadrant is next to useless for comparing between phones, but I like to use it for monitoring changes in the performance of a single unit. On ICS, my LGOG would routinely get scores of 7300+ until the phone got quite warm and then it throttled down. On JB I have never seen a score above 6700 and the loss is entirely due to CPU score. Checking CPU Spy shows me that the CPU never hits 1.5ghz throughout the test, even when run on a cool phone.

[Q] overclocking

I am using many different roms since i have my desire z rooted.
The only problem is:
i can overclock to about 1 ghz... everything above it results in a freeze were my screen stays awaken.
Does anybody know what i'm doing wrong?
You can try different governors, and others may have some other tips. But its also possible that 1 GHz is all your CPU can handle. Not all CPUs are created equal. Far from it, in fact. There is a reason why CPUs are rated for a certain clock speed, in our case 800 MHz. That's the speed that the manufacturer can basically guarantee stable performance. Anything higher than that, and all bets are off. The manufacturing process has a huge amount of variability to it. So to see some people getting stable performance at 1.5 GHz, while you might not get over 1 GHz with the same series of chip, is not a big shock to me.

I have heArd that CPUs of the same phone can perform different. Mine will run all day at 1.8ghz while others get reboots and freezing when they go over 1-1.2 GHz. It really don't make sense to me but I guess it happens. Just glad mine will take whatever the kernel frequency sets allow lol.

The manufacturing process for any type of CPU is quite variable. They can target a range of clock speeds, but can't efficiently manufacture all the chips at the same exact performance. CPUs actually get testing after manufacturing to determine the clock speed, and are "binned" into various categories based on how they tested. If a CPU doesn't meet the test specs for a certain clock speed category, it will be dropped to the next one down. Its also based on market demand. It completely possible a high performing chip gets labelled and sold as a lower performing one, simply to meet demand.

hey guys, so im trying to figure out if theres something wrong with my gnex possible the hardware. ive been using antutu to benchmark it over the past month and at first i was getting scores of 6900 on aokp and francos kernel, but in the past couple of week ive been getting things like this http://imgur.com/ybWRK
the two numbers that are taking the biggest hit are the cpu and ram. is there any way that flashing roms are kernels could have damaged any physical part of the phone? its also been acting a little sluggish so i know its not all the benchmark. any ideas or advice?
which versions of aokp and franco are you using?
b25 for aokp and 18.2 for franco. im wondering if i might have overheated something? is there an app or some other way to see if the hardware is all running the way it should?
i regularly see temperatures from 120-140 without having anything open and not charging, should i return it and try another one or is this normal? from what ive read this is kind of hot.

I see exactly what the problem is, and it's very common.
Your CPU speed is at 1500 MHz -- obviously overclocked.
What can often happen is the OC creates more heat. This causes thermal CPU throttling, which actually will slow the CPU to below-stock speed.
I reckon that if you were to turn your max CPU speed back to 1350 or 1200 you would probably get higher benchmarks even though the CPU speed is slower.

Is the phone stable when overclocking past 1.3ghz?

I heard there was a problem with stability issues before. Has it been fixed?
Also, do any of you guys feel the need to OC in the first place?

I tried OC'ing to 1,4 for a short time, didnt get any instabilities.
Which leads me to question two. No I don't feel the need to OC this phone, it is still good enough to cope with everything i throw at it.
The worst that will happen is that it will run a little hotter than normal. I was running Trinity Kernel on RasCream ROM clocked at 1.5GHz and it was fine, nothing crashed, no reboots, all was well.
Besides; It's a Nexus, it was built for this!

Meh. It all varies. No 2 chipsets are the same. What may work for someone else may not work for you. Trial and error is the only surefire way to find out.

I agree with what has been said above, all the CPU's are not equal but actually the progress made by the kernel devs allows all (or almost) phones to run at 1.3* Ghz (1.34/1.35 Ghz, it depends of the kernel) without any issues.I think it's for all, actually I don't remember a user with issues at 1.3* Ghz...
And for most phones 1.5 Ghz is fine.For some others, above 1.5 Ghz is problematic but it depends also of too many factors.
Now it's not like it when the Genx came out, where 1.3 Ghz was the limit of CPU overclock for all the phones.
And many people can run stable at 1.65 Ghz, also it depends of the kernel.
For me for example my max CPU freq usable each day, so stable is 1.72 Ghz with Glados kernel, above (like 1.8 Ghz) it runs fine for 30 mins, sometimes 1 hour, but after always freeze/reboot... maybe my CPU can't reach this CPU freq or maybe my settings are wrong (voltage) ...
I agree, an extreme overclock like 1.72 Ghz is not really necessary for all day (heat, battery life, etc...) but a little overclock like 1.5/1.53 Ghz and you a difference in certain case (openning some apps, general UI, browsing, etc...).
But if we have the ability to test and play...why not... ,in any case for me it's yes, I like overclock and test the possibilities/limits of my phone, different settings...
Everyone does as he wants and it depends on what you want (battery life,a little more power in some situation like playing or a higher bench score ).
Well considering Texas instruments recommended highest clock speed for this processor is 1.5 ghz I'd say your fine. Anything above that is dependent on how well your chip set will handle it. Besides who honestly has needed to OC for anything other than benchmarks?

How much is safe for overclocking?

I'm running Blackout v3.0, and it's running pretty smooth at first. But now my phone is stuffed with bunch of apps, making it running slower and slower. I want to keep those apps so I'm willing to overclock but I afraid of damaging my phone. So I would like to ask what's the safe overclocking frequency? I want the optimum frequency, fast enough and safe/stable.

Any overclocking can be unsafe as it can shorten the lifespan of your memory and CPU. But with that said I run mine at 1200 with no issues. Most people don't go higher than 1600 but anything 1400 or lower is not going to burn it up too quick IMO. Everyones hardware will react differently though.

They usually say phone will get damaged, but I think its a myth. You can go up to 1600. After that it will get unstable.

I run IceColdSandwich and have found 1459MHz to be the best combo of performance and stability on my phone. Every phone handles OCing a little differently, some can reportedly take over 1600 without a flinch and others will lock regularly with even a slight OC. Just experiment with the "set at boot" option turned off until you find something that works reliably on your phone.
Is it true you guys aren't seeing ill effects on your battery by overclocking like that?

I think OC can affect battery drain only if you use an application which utilizes a full cpu load. But, if you're using this app in normal mode, economy will not be great also. So, when you using your phone for calling or general usage you will not see any problems with battery discharge.
I'm using DHD with Blackout v3.0 and I set 1200Mhz for maximum cpu value. I have no problems, phone is stable. Some time ago I used Leedroid ROM and set also 1200Mhz, but phone was rebooted by itself very often. More than twice a day.
You should try to use OC, as someone said above, without "set on boot" option. I think there is no danger for hardware up to 1600Mhz.

Not under normal use. There's a school of thought that says even though the increased speed requires more power, it can also finish tasks and go back to sleep faster, so it ends up being a wash. I've overclocked all three smartphones I've owned to date and haven't experienced any significant difference in battery life.

They say that as a precautionary measure just as they say flashing a custom ROM can be dangerous. For people who don't know what they're doing. But precaution aside, just like you said you can go up to 1600 MHz safely on this phone. I know every phone behaves differently but on average no one has issues upto that frequency. But above that frequency the phone might be unstable. The CPU will be drawing much more power at high frequencies and will heat up more. The CPU heating up too much and too frequently reduces the life of the CPU. So it's not a myth.

CPU after KitKat update

I just got flashed the stock root KitKat and I have noticed that my CPU isn't going past 1126 MHz when it is capable of twice that. In ROM Toolbox and Set CPU it clearly shows it can go to 2200 but it jumps back down to 1126. Is this just me or are others having this issue too?

It's not an "issue". If your phone spent 100% of it's time (idle/active) at 2.2GHZ, it would be dead in mere hours. SetCPU has a section where it shows you how long your phone's CPU stays in what state (speed). When nothing's happening (screen off/stand by, etc) the CPU stays at lower speeds, and ramps up higher if more demanding stuff is happening (gaming, etc).
I understand that the problem is that my CPU won't reach its max speed and the sliders just revert and when I use a program like antutu to see my specs it says my CPU is only capable of 1.2 or 1.5 GHz. When I run a benchmark the CPU never surpasses those speeds to reach 100%. It is desirable to reach 100% in a benchmark but for some reason that doesn't even happen any more after KitKat.

In my situation, the reverse is the case. I'm running stock rooted 4.4 ZVC and it's like night and day compared to when I was on 4.2. So much more snappier and much better battery life too.

I forgot to mention... i was comparing my phone which is on optimusde2 rom (4.2) with my wife's phone on stock 4.4 and mine is smoother, faster
