Yes, i'm a total noob, sorry everyone. I tried to root my T Mobile Galaxy S2 using the Kies/Odin method, and now i'm getting nothing but a screen that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I would happily follow those directions, but now Kies won't recognize my device?!?!? I also can not get back into download mode. I have no idea what to do. Is there anyone out there that can help?
Can you still turn your phone on and use it?

All you need to do is flash it using Odin. Grab the stock rom from the general forum of the galaxy s2 and flash it using Odin.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Did/does Odin recognize the phone? If it does then go ahead and flash the stock Odin firmware package and that should take care of the problem. Same thing happenend to me and all you need to do is set everything up just like normal, go into DL mode and give Odin a few seconds to find a com port and hit start...just pretend the warning is not there.
I have the same thing ...
I was doing a stock upgrade through Kies, and my computer decided to be dumb and install a windows update and restart the computer... I now see the same thing, i had the stock rom, but it was rooted, and when I try to go back in Odin, it never recognizes the phone... Kies won't recognize the phone, neither will Odin... Am I just returning this phone or what?
EDIT: Nevermind, I only bought it 2 days ago, so I just exchanged the phone
Yes, you can flash from that screen -- I managed to brick my Vibrant that way a number of times, and as long as you get that screen (or the Android digging screen) it's recoverable. KIES should be able to recover it as should Odin -- if it DOESN'T work turn OFF the computer (all the way off) and restart it then try again.
Samsung's USB drivers have a habit of getting confused and causing flash failures both in KIES and Odin.
Be aware that if you're trying to use KIES and the "latest" firmware is a non-wipe firmware (as the updates from T-Mobile are) it will happily load onto the phone something that will bootloop into the stock recovery and refuse to start! If you get hosed like this you probably need to Odin back to the ORIGINAL firmware so you get a "full" flash, then use KIES (or ODIN) again to perform the update.

Were you able to exchange your device? And if you did, what did the T-Mobile reps ask you? and what did you tell them? I ran into the very same problem. I tried everything but I'm still stuck on that screen. I don't want T-Mobile to think I purposely did something to make the phone that way.
Hope I'm not too late to help: I had same problem and used odin to fix.
Here's what I did:
Download stock kernel in tar form from the Android devel forum. Start odin, click check box in PDA, click PDA button then select the kernel you just downloaded.
Insert usb into your phone (I left my cord connected to my computer). Start phone in download mode (up+down keys). Once it's started ib DL mode, unplug the usb cord, then after just a few moments plug it in again. If necessary, let it set a few moments until Odin recognizes the device (yellow stripe in id:com to the upper left), now click start in odin.
That fixed my problem. After that I read and reread everything I could get my hands on, but I think I tried flashing a i1900 kernel.....big duh to me, but maybe I'm not that dumb after all!! But, soon after I was able to root, and have flashed several custom ROMs since my little bump in the road.

Took mine to a store, they didn't have any white kits in stock so they told me to call and tell them that it doesn't turn on, got a replacement ordered without having to troubleshoot over the phone.
Had that happen the first day I got the device trying to root up. Accdently pulled usb while updating. All i did was Hold VOL UP + DOWN And Plug usb in and download mode came right back up and started the process all over again.
It was a success as.

Worked!

we don't have ICS... so I'm not sure if you're in the correct section. is your phone's variant the t-mobile t989 hercules s2?
don't do anything with kies, go to download/odin mode and flash a fresh download of whatever you messed up on... or I would just flash a complete stock ROM.. the ones ending with ".tar.md5".. that should save your phone.

Pull the battery out and let it sit for awhile. Try to get into download mode and Odin to recognize it. No pit file is needed to flash this phone only the PDA file which is a tar.md5 file. Should have searched and followed thisguide. hope you can get it working.
I did that, the phone still didnt turn on. but when i plug my phone into the computer, device loaded up (without drivers), it is QHSUSB_DLOAD.
I found the QHSUSB_DLOAD driver, but it's stuck installing the driver, what's going on?

should i be sending something else at this point?

I don't see anything on the screen even when i hold the 3 button combo. But i am trying to flash it with the 2.3.6 ROM. so far it's just sitting there on setupconnection... in ODIN
the USBJig site said as long as there's something on the screen it should work. but i don't see anything on screen.
Have Odin running before connecting your phone. Pull the battery off the phone and connect the USB cable to computer and phone. Hold Vol+ and Vol- and plug the battery back in. Keep holding the volume keys until you see something on the phone screen or if Odin changes.

i plugged the phone in without a battery and odin detects the phone (at least COM9). i put the battery in while holding the 2 volume buttons but phone nor ODIN changed.
if i hold the power button for 5 seconds COM port disappears but reappears when i release the button.
do i need a PIT file? because when it first screwed up i used a PIT file along with the 2.3.6, and it gave me a write error, and this is when the phone died.
the pit file i used is something called u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit (i probably shouldnt have used this)
I'm out of ideas........sorry.

i think i can use samsung warranty to get another phone, but i would really like to fix this so if i screw up again i can fix what's wrong here... that and it will be a solution others can try
could i have messed up something when it loaded the PIT file? maybe i can get the correct pit file? or a bootloader?
I can tell you for a fact from experience that is a hard brick and nothing is going to fix it sorry

alright samsung send me back the phone with PBA replaced (main board i guess)
it has 2.3.6 in it but i have a CWR backup of my old 2.3.5 from before all this trouble.
Hopefully i can restore that no problem!
I know this occurs to several users and to others phones such as SG2,III,Ace and many more. But so far, i still can't figure out how to solve it.
Installed Kies, Installed SGN2 kit 3.0.
When the phone is On, i can transfer any files through Kies, or just drag and drop. Even Odin detect my phone "port 3" in blue.
On the phone, i tickled USB debugging and hold down volume, menu+power to go in Flash mode. and from there i'm stuck. my computer can't detect the phone anymore.
Any help? please!

Its because he has toolkit and kies intalled at same time...it says in toolkit thread to have onr or other....the drivers dont mix
I had the same problem. Heres the solution. Uninstall Keis then reinstall. Then plug in your phone until all the drivers are installed. Make sure you use that same usb on your computer if you have more then one. Then try again by opening Odin first, then put phone in download mode and plug in the phone into the same usb as you did when installing the drivers. For some reason odin only works with the usb you plug your phone into, when you installed the drivers.

Hello everyone...
I was updating the phone recently, and went to reboot it (cyanogen mod ROM btw) and now I have no idea what it did but it is now stuck on the Samsung logo, and their is no recovery I can use on it. Only DL mode works.
I tried to use Odin to relfash but the problem is on both my Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers, they install the drivers, but they still fail to recognize the phone when I plug it in!
I have tried different USB ports, a full driver uninstall, multiple USB cords and the computer refuses to recognize the phone saying "USB Device not recognized"
Again, the drivers install fine, and I did a reboot after each install and uninstall. No luck.
I didnt even install drivers on my W8 netbook and I was able to flash back TWRP using Odin and Download mode yesterday when my attempt at flashing TWRP 2.6.0.4 originally failed.
Fire up download mode, then open up Odin (you should see a COM port open), load up what you need to install, then flash.
What are you trying to flash using ODIN? A bootloader or a ROM?
"BootLooping GhostBrick"
Holy crap! you too? I'm experiencing the same thing too bro. its my girlfriend's phone tho. she's borrowing my Nexus 4 while I work on fixing her SGS2...I seem to have contracted a serious case of the BootLooping GhostBrick, just like you did, right after updating. I went through the same steps troubleshooting as you did, and ...its a guess, but I'm starting to figure the solution will probably include: 1. using ADB to push sum files to the phone, or otherwise somehow reflashing stock firmware from the PC.
2. Re-Root the dam thing and flash a kernel with a recovery (like CWM or TWRP) using rom manager...and 3. Considering installing a ROM of my choice Like PACMAN, or Cyanogenmod.....hmm...Yum
anyway, the search for the vaccine to this dreadful affliction begins. Please post if you find something, I will too.

It's not a matter of trying different com ports, I can't get the PC or Odin to recognize the phone in download mode despite uninstalling kies, installing the latest drivers twice, 3 different OEM cables, multiple usb ports, nothing. when I plug it in, Windows doesn't make any sound like with other usb devices, nor does it try and search for drivers. Are there any other options short of JTAG repair?

I was going to reply earlier, but I got side tracked and this guy is literally having the exact same problem as me. I tried multiple OEM cables, and ports and Windows recognized it but it still won't let me USE it. Odin (after re-install) still shows no connections or ports.
Also, yeah this phone isn't mine either, my Dads. He is using my old S3 for now and is quite mad with me hahaha.
So yeah, I have to re-cap...
-Updated through Goomanager.... (the culprit I am guessing)
-Rebooted
-Got stuck on the Galaxy S 2 screen
-Plugged in with 4 USB cables to three different USB ports
-Uninstalled and reinstalled Odin numerous times, each with a reboot between.
-Odin fails to recognize it
-Windows KNOWS IT IS THERE, and makes a sound when plugged in, however it says "USB Device not recognized"
Any more ideas?
Thanks for the help to guys it is very much appreciated. I will donate to the person that can help me out of this

Probably a faulty USB port. My computer shows that message all the time, only one of them works correctly. If not, you just need to install the correct USB Drivers, because even if you don't have them it should recognize your phone as a Samsung phone but will say that the drivers did not install correctly.
I AM USING THIS TAR AND IT STARTS BUT THEN FAILS

After they're installed which takes some time, put the phone into download mode without Odin running, connect to the computer and let the pc install the drivers. If the pc say "drivers installed successfully" it should recognize the phone and you can continue. Also make sure there are no other drivers interfering and make sure kies isn't running in the background if you have it. Hope this helps.

well when i can get odin to even recognize the devce, it is blue under idcom. shouldn't it be a big yellow box? i think this is a driver issue but ive tried it on two laptops. ive deleted the drivers and reinstalled three times.
Maybe try a different version of odin. I normally use 1.85 and yes it is normally a yellow box and has the com number in it.
