Linux + ADB + Slimbeam. Cyanogenmod was the cause of the error.

Is it a Tmobile phone? or Wind or Mobilicity variant?
Is it rooted? How did you root?
Did you try installing a different recovery manager to flash roms with?
Did you try Odin?
Did you bring it back to 100% factory to try fresh from scratch?

its a tmobile phone. i rooted with Samsung GS3 tool kit. yes i tried using twrp and cwmr and both give me an install fail.
Try using Mobile Odin to flash.
Also you could use MrRobinsons root66 UVALH2 with odin to go back to factory stock but rooted. Then install your recovery and try again.

I believe this happened because this line in build.prop was changed:
ro.product.device=d2tmo
It couldve been changed by the rom dev, a mod, or you may have changed it to gain compatibility for the play store, or other app.
If you see that again, look for that line in build.prop and make sure its d2tmo.
It could be something entirely different, as well. But thats the first place id look.

OK, so I'm trying to flash the CM10 Nightly d2tmo. I have CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4. I moved the google apps.zip and cm-10 zip to the SD, I wiped the cache and data, and then I go to install cm10 from the zip card but then I get this
Code:
Installing update. . .
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "
d2tmo" | | getprop('ro.build.product") == "d2tmo"
E: Error in /sdcard/cm-10-20121019-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.
zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
I don't know whats going wrong. I followed instructions just as they were. And I can't go back to my phone because I wiped the data and cache so nothing will come up if I reboot, correct?
Update CWM. Check my signature for a link, assuming you are indeed using a d2tmo.
for me I downloaded Rom manager and flashed my first cm10 nightly from there
They need their money, too, or something
I don't think this phone is the dtmo thing exactly

But I'm in CWM recovery. Do I just go to reboot system? Keep in mined I wiped my data if that matters.
Do you have an external sd card?

No.
I hate to send you to the cm10 forums but you can change the build prop in there
Or
You could reflash something that works in clock work
And then flash cm10 when you have Rom manager

If I can get back to my phone then there's no problem. I think I just need to install the latest version of CWM. I was just scared to hit the reboot system now because I thought that it would make a huge problem.
Boot into your ROM again, download ROM manager, select the T-Mobile Galaxy S3 recovery, let it flash and install from the ROM Mananger app, select reboot into recovery from app the, should boot into recovery, flash CM10, enjoy.
As long as you didn't format system you're fine to reboot system

First off hope you're not using ROM manager - that doesn't work with this device and has been know to brick it.
Sounds like you are. and if not...
As Blues already asked, What recovery are you using.
Also if you are using Mobile Odin you also cannot flash modems with it.
Also more unasnswered questions:
What ROM are you on? GB, ICS, JB?
What Kernel? And what recovery with that kernel?
What modem where you trying to flash.
What steps did you actually take to get into recovery
Toggle Script Asserts to Disabled if it is the same FI27.ZIP from xda then it is a good file. I've used it. Look below on the menu when you get to ”select zip” you want to install. Should show enabled or disabled when you select the script asserts toggle.

Wasn't this error related to having an older version of CWM?

Yeah, try updating your CWM or consider switching to TWRP.

I'm on the i747 and alway getting an error when flashing ROMs: error executing updater binary in zip, status 7. I read somewhere that flashing an older version of TWRP sometimes works but it did not work for me. I went all the way down to 2.3 from 2.6 for d2att. I resorted to unrooting and flashing the stock ROM via Odin and still getting the errors. I've tried flashing CM10.1, Carbon 1.8, Liquidsmooth 2.9, etc. Anything will help at this point. I refuse to be stuck on freakin TouchWiz...
Ok, this is what I think it is. You have to be on the 4.1.1 bootloader to run aosp ROMS. But, 4.1.1 based roms will not run on the 4.1.2 bootloader.
I know I'm a noob but how do I verify my bootloader? I was able to flash an older version of Carbon via TWRP 2.3.

It's the last 4 digits in the bootloader line.
