Hello as you saw the title I'm new here and noobie to android.
I've surfed some of the threads and saw some stuff I really dont know about it.
Please help me learn what all these mean:
1. rooting, I've read some threads about this but they all say it bricks your phone and something about binary count.
2. custom roms and mods?
3. something about stock.
4. flashing
5. Triangle and odin??
I got my note 2 yesterday and done some research on google then I found this site.
do you recommend rooting? if so, any links which helps me to root?

There isn't not brick for Note II. The flash is write firmware in a access protected memory and it is a delicate procedure that should never be interrupted while applying, if it may stop suddenly causing the brick. For the original firmware (rom in stock) the flash is ok, but if you are flashing the unofficial elements with smartphone in Download Mode you void your warranty. The only method to restore the warranty is the app TriangleAway. Odin is the program for flash the firmware Samsung with PC, and Odin Mobile is the program for flash directly on the device. With second choice you don't void your warranty because it does not go to Download Mode for the flash of unofficial versions, but to use it you must obtain the root and it means losing the OTA updates. Then updates you will need to do it manually and if you try to use the software Kies on PC, you lose root permissions.
Custom roms are Android's version personalized for a device, and mods are changes to the your system.

if you flash files not owned by samsung you lose your warranty. To perform a flash from a smartphone without root, you must use the computer as a medium. So, you need to put your smartphone in Download Mode. All the Android devices have to access it:
1. Turn off the phone
2. Hold down the volume down, power button, home button for a few seconds and it appears.
3. Press volume up to confirm the access
Then You connected the device at usb port and with Odin from computer you start the flash of a certain file.

To be precise, even the usage of Odin voids your warranty It`s 100 % true. For Samsung the only way to update firmware is with Kies or OTA`s. If you have different software on your phone (even genuine samsung firmware) that is different than it came with out of the box, they can decide to revoke warranty!

if you use the original versions of the firmware, you obtain the root permissions without increase the warranty and nor increase the binary counter. For example, if you flash with Odin from PC a kernel with ClockworkMod void your warranty !

[Q] Assistance on downgrading

My USB is officially failing and somehow Samsung says I'm still in warranty so I'm going to try to send it back, but I need some assistance with downgrading because I honestly don't know what steps I need to take.
1) I am on jedi master x2 4.3 rom.
2) I have devil kernel, I never took the 4.3 ota so there isn't any knox on my phone.
3) I have the new tmobile modem.
4) I have TWRP as a custom recovery.
5) I also have triangle away from the play store if necessary.
My question is what steps do I need to take to put this phone on 4.1.2 so I can ship it back to samsung. I don't want to load 4.3 because I don't want to trip the counter.
Edit: Also adding as my usb is failing it cannot connect to pc so I can't use odin

[Q] Newbie With Questions Rooting T-Mobile Samsung Note 3

Hello,
I'm new to this whole rooting thing (I need to root my device for a couple of apps from the Google Play store) and I've been reading all the forums and I'm scratching my head going over all the information and I want to make sure I get it right so I don't brick my phone. Here is my situation:
- I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900T) on T-Mobile USA which was purchased October 2013
- This phone is stock from T-Mobile and has never had any type of mods, etc done to it
- 2 days ago, I upgraded the software OTA to KitKat 4.4.2
- I do NOT have the 'multitouch' issue as described in some of the forums
All I want to do at the end of the day is root my phone, without damaging it - preferably without tripping KNOX either (if possible).
It is confusing to me which thread to follow. I see links / instructions for CF-Root, CF-Auto-Root, Root De La Vega, etc are from October 2013 (not sure if this latest OTA update changes the steps) and I don't know which one to use without damaging my phone. I have the AP, CP, CSC information if this helps. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Follow this exactly from step 4 (since you already have 4.4.2), and you will have no issues. All root methods as of now trip KNOX, so if you really don't want to do that, don't root.

Thanks for this! Will this erase my phone back to defaults? Do I need to backup my phone prior to rooting it?

Everything will stay as is. None of the steps does a factory reset. All that will happen is you gain root, and will be able to use the SD card like you did on 4.3. As far as a back up goes I don't think you can on stock. You need the custom recovery which this will give you. Then you can do that if you want.

Great, thanks again. I will try this tomorrow.

Just some tips if you haven't used ODIN before, or used custom recoveries. When it does its thing, and reboots, make sure ODIN says PASS before disconnecting or shutting off. It's not in the instructions since those doing this know this, but just giving a heads up. Also on the last step after flashing the SD card fix it says to back out until you see REBOOT. When you do that you have two options. You want to press the option 1. NO, and not 2. Reset/stop custom recovery. Again it's not in the post, but you want to keep the custom recovery active, so always select NO.

Now that I have rooted my phone, I need to read up on what else I can do besides use apps from the Google Play that require root access, e.g. removing bloatware and using my phone as an Access Point.

Good to hear. One of my first apps I install is AdAway. It's not in the Play Store because Google bans all ad-blockers. If you hate ads (like me) this is a must have. If you want to try it here is the link. After you install it, and open it for the first time to install the hosts, you may be prompted to do a symlink. This is normal. Just press yes. Enjoy your root!
You don't have to download the F-Droid app. Just look for "download apk" under the latest version which right now is 2.8.1.

Good morning all, since my post above back in March, my rooted Note 3 has worked great. Today, when I connected my phone to Kies3, I see that there is an available firmware update from:
PDA:NB4 / PHONE:NB4 / CSC:NB4 (TMB)
to
PDA:NE6 / PHONE:NE6 / CSC:NE6 (TMB)
Are there any precautions I need to take if I want to upgrade to the latest firmware using Kies3 if my phone is rooted using the above procedure?

Not sure if Kies will let you update firmware as you are rooted.
You can update to the NE6 Firmware by using Odin.
Find firmware either in this forum or elsewhere and flash away.
There was a good thread here on the Tmobile GN3 Forum with dl links, and steps.

Yes there is, when you Odin, make sure you are on stock kernel, and then before you go into Odin go ahead and run triangle away, then boot into download mode. Just seems some people have had issues getting modem to flash, and getting boot loader to flash. Other than that you will have no issues. Thanks man.

[Q] Modified Note 3? Won't let me update :(

Hey, everyone! I tried googling this for hours and I still haven't found a solution, so here goes:
A couple days ago, I deleted an important image from my T-Mobile Note 3 and I was freaking out, searching high and low for a solution. I read on Yahoo! answers to download DiskDigger, but the device must be rooted in order to install it. So, I tried to root my device with KINGO Root, which totally failed and then my device just went into bootloop and I thought I messed up my device for good. Luckily, on a different thread someone suggested to use the Youtube video GalaxyNote2Root made to unbrick my Note 3. (Even though it was for Note 2, it was the same concept and I did find the stock firmware on samsung-updates for my Note 3.) It ended up working successfully and then I continued to try root my Note 3 using Odin and the video instructions on xda forum (which I should have just done in the first place) and that worked successfully, too.
Now, my problem is, is when I went to update my Note 3 under settings, it says "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available." I tried using Triangle Away (I don't know if I did it correctly) and also 1-click unrooting my device in SuperSU. I'm a huge noob at this rooting stuff, but what I gathered from all the research I did on Google, I apparently tripped "Knox". When I go into download mode it reads:
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Knox Kernel Lock: 0x0
Knox Warranty Void: 0x1
So, a couple questions I have are, how do I "unmodify" my Note 3 so I can get updates? Is there a way to reset my Warranty Void back to 0x0? Will this always happen if I want to root my Note 3? Thanks in advance!

you can not revert knox back to 0x0, no method so far for this....
so you can receive updates, just flash through ODIN, the firmware ... I believe all Samsung phones and tablets will tell you about being modified for updates, if you rooted the phone.

well, you can just reodin a stock unrooted firmware, and then otas will work again, but Knox is basically always tripped.

why even use odin when you have SAMSUNG KIES. put your phone in download mode first, load KIES on your computer, then go to tools>firmware upgrade and intialisation and then follow the step by step direction.

Can you link me to an unrooted firmware? And when I flash my device with the unrooted firmware, do I uninstall root first or will this just take care of the whole thing?

I tried unrooting the phone and it was still not letting me update because it was still "modified". I thought this was because I tripped Knox, but maybe I didn't unroot correctly??

when u flash the stock firmware in Odin it will overwrite root, so no worries. just follow the first part of this guide. obviously don't flash root, or custom recovery. just follow the first part of this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2765014
or, you could also go to a website called sammobile and download the latest ne6 firmware. The link I provided is also the latest ne6 firmware guide, and like I said just follow the guide up to the the root part and you will be good. it will over write root, and whatever else. good to go.

yea, you must of done something incorrect. now, you won't have any updates after following the ne6 guide, as you will be on the latest firmware. but if you continue to stay on it you will indeed be able to grab otas when they come. personally I would just root, stay rooted, and keep up to date with roms, and kernels, and all that crap.

Ok, First, for the p600 if you root, you will trip Knox which will void your warranty and there is no way around this and this is the only way to root your model (p600), If you don't care about warranty then continue...
1) Download this file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11938873/CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.zip then unzip, you will see this file CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5.
2) Turn Off Tablet, Hold Volume Down + Power. Follow the instructions on the screen to get to download mode (Odin mode).
Rooting Instructions
1.Flash the CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5 file with Odin v3.09 (put in AP slot, don't change any other settings, click start)
2.Let it do its trick! boot up then go to play store download and install supersu in order to update supersu to the latest binary.

Knox is just a shortcut to the install link, Does this mean it's not installed or is the shortcut just extras (I don't know how to post screenshots).

I don't understand what you are saying???
When I said tripped Knox void warranty is that your device detected that you installed unauthorized software which tripped the knox counter. You can see this by boot into download mode (Odin mode) and you should see a line like this:
Warranty bit: 1 (factory is 0x0)

ok, now i'm getting confused.
my p600 is still on 4.3 jellybean. but from what i read, as long as did not update to kitkat firmware, i can still unroot and reverse the warranty bit bcoz they don't have knox yet. but it'll be too late if i updated to kikat right? btw, i used cf-auto-root.
just weeks ago i rooted my p600 and flashed stock recovery, so now my p600 thinks its stock official firmware, even say so in about device.
i haven't tried unrooting it yet to confirm that i can get warrenty back by flashing back whole stock firmware bcoz i don't want to redo all settings again. but thats the impression i'm geting.
anyhow if i can't really reverse that warranty thing i don't really care anyways. i warranty my stuff better than they do it, and since i think i can still get updates, it bothers me even less if its unreversible. but in the case if i'm right, and i can reverse that warranty bit. maybe one day i'd like to update to kitkat. then what? i'll have to have knox in my system and i can't reverse warranty counter anymore?

i kind of realized the dilemma i have here since if i own the device for more than a yr, my warranty wouldn't matter anymore. am i just thinking too much and worrying myself?

Yes you're confused!!. Knox has nothing to do with warranty bit, once this tripped, you can't undo doesn't matter you on 4.3 or 4.4.

I'm a little confused on a few other issues. I have read over 40 pages on another thread here about rooting etc and I couldn't find the answer to a few questions. I've just successfully rooted using the most recent instructions (P600 - CF Auto root) but in earlier instructions (about a year ago) you had to also install the stock recovery file using Odin. Is that a necessary step? Is it needed for OTA updates? Since I've read that OTA updates will unroot and possibly prevent you from rooting at all, is it best to just forget about OTAs and flash up to date files from this site? Is it also prudent to turn off auto updating in the settings.
If I'm not installing custom roms and backed up using Titanium Pro do I really need to install TWRP? Any other benefits other than nandroid? Thanks

Once you rooted you can't use OTA update any more. So the easiest going forward is to flash TWRP and use it to flash pre-rooted rom from this site.

I guess I'm installing TWRP tonight. There are many versions up to 2.8 I think. Which one do you recommend for P600? I've tried searching for "installing TWRP" but there were no obvious hits like there were for rooting. Which is the key thread?
To my first question, I'm assuming that the later root methods automatically installs or leaves the stock recovery as earlier methods needed to load it. Am I right?

OK found the thread and I just read the last 55 pages (that took a while) and boy is it scary. So many problems. Touch not accurate, inverted screens, certain versions failing eg 2.7, can't access external SD card, continual looping, booting into the old recovery , OTG cables not working, time zones can't be set properly, some say turn off autoboot in odin and some say don't change default settings etc etc. the list goes on and on. I likened it to a bushfire or tornado. Some houses still stand and some don't and you want to know the silly thing here, I am an experienced computer teacher with a degree in computer science and I've upgraded firmware on over a hundred devices over the years and yet all this rooting and recovery stuff is another world. The rooting process, admittedly, was a piece of cake and the instructions for flashing TWRP seems easy too but after that there seems to be so many problems. So hit and miss.
All i want to do is load TWRP on a P600. I will only load custom ROMs when a new firmware version comes out. Can someone alleviate my fears who has successfully loaded TWRP recently on a P600 using ODIN without massive tweaking to get it going. What version TWRP did you use and did you turn off autoboot or not?
PS Have I posted this in the correct section?

Took the plunge and loaded the latest TWRP 2.8.1 and it worked perfectly except I could only back to the main SD storage and not my extSD. I ended up, as a work around, moving the backup files to the extSD drive and PC.
I think I was worried unnecessarily.
