Hello as you saw the title I'm new here and noobie to android.
I've surfed some of the threads and saw some stuff I really dont know about it.
Please help me learn what all these mean:
1. rooting, I've read some threads about this but they all say it bricks your phone and something about binary count.
2. custom roms and mods?
3. something about stock.
4. flashing
5. Triangle and odin??
I got my note 2 yesterday and done some research on google then I found this site.
do you recommend rooting? if so, any links which helps me to root?
thank you for reading this

There isn't not brick for Note II. The flash is write firmware in a access protected memory and it is a delicate procedure that should never be interrupted while applying, if it may stop suddenly causing the brick. For the original firmware (rom in stock) the flash is ok, but if you are flashing the unofficial elements with smartphone in Download Mode you void your warranty. The only method to restore the warranty is the app TriangleAway. Odin is the program for flash the firmware Samsung with PC, and Odin Mobile is the program for flash directly on the device. With second choice you don't void your warranty because it does not go to Download Mode for the flash of unofficial versions, but to use it you must obtain the root and it means losing the OTA updates. Then updates you will need to do it manually and if you try to use the software Kies on PC, you lose root permissions.
Custom roms are Android's version personalized for a device, and mods are changes to the your system.
The guide for root is here.

if you flash files not owned by samsung you lose your warranty. To perform a flash from a smartphone without root, you must use the computer as a medium. So, you need to put your smartphone in Download Mode. All the Android devices have to access it:
1. Turn off the phone
2. Hold down the volume down, power button, home button for a few seconds and it appears.
3. Press volume up to confirm the access
Then You connected the device at usb port and with Odin from computer you start the flash of a certain file.

To be precise, even the usage of Odin voids your warranty It`s 100 % true. For Samsung the only way to update firmware is with Kies or OTA`s. If you have different software on your phone (even genuine samsung firmware) that is different than it came with out of the box, they can decide to revoke warranty!

if you use the original versions of the firmware, you obtain the root permissions without increase the warranty and nor increase the binary counter. For example, if you flash with Odin from PC a kernel with ClockworkMod void your warranty !

Hello, I was reading some of the root methods posted in the dev thread. I was wondering if any of those methods (being AT&T) will work on the Bell SGS III ?
I being a I727R user, found a one-click-method, that allowed me to root that phone when I did it. It was one batch file, which installed root and SU which was really nice.
I have not played around with ODIN too much and did not want to harm it. I know the SGS3 just released so things do take time. I was wondering if there will be a one click method to rooting the device, and in turn installing CWM.
Any suggestions would be great. Thank you
From what I've been heard and seen these days, I am 99% sure that all the Rogers/Bell/Telus/AT&T are the same model, which is I747M. So I assume that the rooting method is interchangeable.
I know the rooting method works on Rogers' one for sure.. I am going to do it tonight probably and report back.

Much appreciated, please let me know how it goes, as I have 2 (BELL) I747's here to root and install recovery. I would be interested in what method is used to get these going.
Thanks

nice wanna link that, I saw y2 going to try that just verifying that we don't need to bother with the fixboot.tar
Have you actually used the non-counter-trip root method on your phone? I just got a Bell phone and so far Odin fails each time I try.
Instructions:
Root Method Starts Here.
** Get Odin like mentioned Above
** Make Sure you have all Samsung Drivers installed.
** Reboot your phone into download mode
* Hold down Volume Down, Home and then power until Warning!! message is displayed
* Press Volume Up to continue.
** Your phone should now be in download mode and displaying a green Android and say Downloading. If it is not, power off your phone by holding down the power button and then try to get into Download mode again. Do NOT progress until you have done so.
** Go into the folder you extracted Odin3 into and run Odin3 v3.04.exe
** Connect your phone to your computer via USB
** In Odin, the COM box all the way to the left should turn blue and it should say Added!! in the Message area.
** Click on PDA and in the Open window that pops up navigate to and open the Tar With CWM from below file you downloaded earlier
** Verify that Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked
** Click Start. Once the process is completed you device should automatically reboot and there will be a green PASS! box in the upper left of the window. You can then close Odin.
** Power off your device and boot into Recovery mode
* To boot into Recovery mode: Hold down Volume Up, Home and then the Power button until you are in Recovery (it should say CWM-based Recovery at the top of the screen)
**. Install CMW_SuperUser_v3.07.zip that you copied onto your internal memory
* Navigating ClockWorkMod Recovery: Use the Volume Up and Down arrow keys to change the highlighted option and the home key to select an option. The Back softkey works, but will not be lit and will take you back one screen.
Installing a zip:
* Select "Install zip from sdcard" (Yes, I know it's on the internal storage.)
* Select "Choose zip from sdcard"
* Select the zip you want to install; in this case CWM_SuperUser_v3.0.7.zip
* Select "Yes" to begin installing
**. Once the process has completed use the Back arrow to get back to the main recovery screen (remember, it works, but it's not lit) and select "reboot system now." Once your device boots up you should now be 'Rooted,' but there's still a few more things to be done
15. Install BusyBox. There are actually several ways to do this, but the BusyBox app in the Google Play Market is quick and easy. Install it, grant it SuperUser permissions and it'll walk you through the rest and advise you when to update.
16. Update your Binaries.
* Open the Superuser app
* Get into settings (the wrench icon in the upper right of the screen)
* Select Su binary under the General section towards the bottom of the list
* Select Update
**.Your device is now rooted and all set.

read here for no trip. This is based on the AT&T model, Since I am using bell I did not bother, and followed the other method. I couldn't care if I tripped the counter... never have sent a phone in for warranty myself.
Since mine is i747M, I chose not to use the AT&T img just for my own reasons.
I just flashed cwm via odin, and SU via cwm

It should work fine but ofcorse nothing is perfect.
Once Bell's firmware is availiable on samsungs servers I plan on injecting a copy with SuperSU root and will make it availiable to others in an odin flashable file that wont trip the counter for those that dont know how to do it themselfs.
Also the non trip method of recovery is pretty stright forward as ive done simular things like this too on bootloaders on my SGS2 I will test and report my findings and give instructions for others once I can get my hands on Bells firmware.

Has anybody confirmed that the AT&T no-trip root works on a Bell S3? My friend said it should since the model numbers are the same so same hardware.
Also dbzgod, is there any eta on when the stock Bell firmware is available?

Alright thanks! I think I will give the AT&T version a try. I am a noob with Android after just making the switch to Android from iOS.
With the root, I will be able to uninstall any AT&T pre-included software right?
I can confirm it works, but it trip the counter, rooted, SU too, oh, well, it won't be to long until a fix for the counter is out.
hey guys,
I am fairly new to all of this so I am just wondering - what do we have to wait for before a bell specific root can be done?

Hello,
First I want to apologize if this concern has already been answered before. I tried searching for a thread to answer my concern, however, it seems I cannot locate any specific.
I have a rooted Galaxy Note 2 (N7105). Now, I want to return to the original/stock firmware so as to update to the latest version. I don't want my device to be rooted anymore. I rooted it, however, did not do much about the privilege and advantages of having a rooted device. Guess, I don't have much time to explore. =(
QUESTION: I am planning to update my device later via KIES. When I try to update it, will it brick my phone? Or, will I encounter a situation wherein I need to do something else to have it back to the stock firmware? Is it safe to just update it via KIES? I don't care if after updating my device won't be rooted anymore.
Seeking for your friendly and professional advice. Have a great rest of the day.

I't been a while. Just want to say thank you. =] I was able to unroot my device before, now I am going to root again.
Hello,
Just want to let you know that this worked for me when I unrooted my N7105 before. I used triangle away and followed this step.
Now, I rooted it and would like to unroot it again. I can see that the KNOX WARRANTY somehow has already been void.
Can I still use the same procedure 1. Reset Flash Counter via Triangle Away and 2. Follow this "KIES" procedure? Or will it be different because of the KNOX WARRANTY scenario? Your help is appreciated. Thank you.
Hi All
Let me start with few good things here You guys are amazing helping and providing tweaks for us:good:
I am Nexus user. I have Installed Custom Recovery, Flashed ROMs and rooted my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. This is my First Samsung Tablet. I have waited enough for Nexus 10 (2). I finally bought SM-P600.
I was trying to find an Guide with links for Unlocking bootloader and Updating firmware and then flash Custom recovery for this but coudnt figure it out
I have been reading lots of things about Knox and counters related to it.
Can anyone Please help me find answers straight.
1) Any Rooting and Custom Recovery tools or ADB commands without Hitting the KNOX counter {Just In case IF I wanted to return it} If not then which one you recommend ?
By the Way I found few posts related to Rooting Which has confused me more. I used to use Chainfire SUROOT:
Rooting using CF-AUTO Root
Universal Root de la Vega
2) If I Root and want to use Stock ROM of SM-P600 will all apps work normally or any known issues with it ?
3) Is Odin any tool which everyone is taking about ? I am not sure about it Can you provide any links to its dev for more info. Found it about in a Post to return to STOCK ?
4) Are these ROMS and apps Odexed or Deodexed ROM?
5) Any Dependencies for Firmware and with any of the above questions. I mean In Universal Root I saw they were talking about certain version of firmware. Also Should I update the latest firmware and do a Nandriod backup ?
6) Also read that once KNOX counter goes up, I wont get any OTA ? My Plan is I will use it till next Nexus and will give it to parents with stock ROM. If I am using I can always use an Custom Rom and get updates. But for parents I want to return it to stock so that they can easily update when OTA is available.
I would like to make one more suggestion to MOD's Please Pin the Guides like the Rooting and stuff like Return to Stock which are quite common and useful so that its easy for newbies( aka for Samsung) like me.
Thanks
Zaib.
1. This is not really a single question with a single answer I think vaguely what you are asking is if you can root without tripping knox?
Nope. Not at this time.
2. If you use CF-Auto-Root you'll likely find that the vast majority of applications keep working without issue. Of those that don't, a handful you can manage back to a working state with various tweaks, but there are a few that are probably gone for good. You can basically kiss all the Samsung hub apps goodbye, these will start claiming they are not supported in your country even if they were working perfectly prior to rooting, some may continue working for a short time after but eventually something leaks and your access is cut. Screen mirroring will no longer work though this can be fixed with a small zip file flash. OTA updates are also gone.
Forget all the talk about 'triangle away' fixing any of this, it hasn't for me.
3. Odin is a tool that is able to flash firmware files or parts thereof to your device. Heimdall is an alternative suite of applications, while there is a GUI for it, it seems fairly hit and miss on Linux these days, I've never had much luck with it, on the other hand the command line tools work perfectly fine.
Once you trip Knox, there's no turning back! You won't lose your warranty in any meaningful way, but you may end up having to argue about it and drag in government regulators to get your tablet repaired free of charge depending on the dealer response.
4. I don't think this is particularly relevant to the SM-P600. My subjective opinion would be to stick with the bog standard Samsung ROM. If you want cool themes there are a multitude of launchers, Xposed takes care most other things you might ever care to tweak.
5. You have one choice. CF-Auto-Root. Backups are healthy.
6. True, but you'll still be able to flash via Odin so it doesn't really mean much of anything. Once you trip Knox, you can also kiss OTA updates goodbye as well.

How are you flashing TWRP, through recovery or Odin?
Hi everyone, this is my first post on here, though I have read a lot of other threads on this site and just wanted to start by saying thank you to all the helpful people on here.
So, my issue is I have a Note 2 (N7100). I rooted it (using very useful guides from here) and installed the Slimkat custom ROM. I'm now selling the phone but the person interested in buying from me wants the original Samsung stock ROM (unrooted so that he can get the update currently rolling out).
I downloaded the correct official firmware (I'm in Thailand) from sammobile and I've tried using Odin just as instructed here and on many other sites. However it just won't work.
I select the md5 firmware file then and it does it's getting the PIT file and gets to the point where I just have to hit start. But when I do it says it failed and that I need an Odin supported file.
I suspect this is because of previous flashing. When I boot into download mode is says it has a binary count of 2 and that knox was tripped.
I read on here that I could use Triangleaway but that if I mess it up, it's goodbye phone. I know that you can't be held responsible etc etc but I would just like to know can I use Triangleaway on my phone (which is running SlimKat 4.4.2)? It says that you have to be using it with a compatible ROM.
If I use Triangleaway with my phone, following the instructions I've found on here... what are the chances that I'll end up totally permanently bricking my phone?
Provided that I don't do anything stupid and just follow step by step instructions, would it be ok? (yes, I know you can't be held responsible)
And would this solve the issue of Odin not being able to flash the file that seems to work for everyone else?
somewada
If you have better bootlader, than mj5, then tringleaway is not working. about knox. if knox varranty 1 the jor varranty is over
if bootlader mj5 then download original rom www.sammobile.com
Knox counter says warranty void 0x1 then forget about MJ5. You must have tripped with a bootloader above MJ5 therefore no downgrade.
You got to go for the newest firmware to get stock again, even (maybe) got to try indian 4.4.2 AND unrooted status will stay custom, so OTA won't work.
Seems that you pay the price for unconscious or careless flashing. Sad to state this...
Hi guys,
I am new to the xda forums and I have been researching about rooting my note 10.1 2014 p600 (WIFI). I have three questions about rooting my device.
1. How would I update my tab with root? I heard you can't get OTA updates.

3. How do I get TWRP and is it good?
I haven't installed knox on it yet and I am a beginner to linux and have done research so I know what root is.

Ok, First, for the p600 if you root, you will trip Knox which will void your warranty and there is no way around this and this is the only way to root your model (p600), If you don't care about warranty then continue...
1) Download this file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11938873/CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.zip then unzip, you will see this file CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5.
2) Turn Off Tablet, Hold Volume Down + Power. Follow the instructions on the screen to get to download mode (Odin mode).
Rooting Instructions
1.Flash the CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5 file with Odin v3.09 (put in AP slot, don't change any other settings, click start)
2.Let it do its trick! boot up then go to play store download and install supersu in order to update supersu to the latest binary.
3. Boot back into Odin mode and flash TWRP version 2.6.3.3 found here https://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/lt03wifiue/
That's all!

I don't understand what you are saying???
When I said tripped Knox void warranty is that your device detected that you installed unauthorized software which tripped the knox counter. You can see this by boot into download mode (Odin mode) and you should see a line like this:
Warranty bit: 1 (factory is 0x0)
I hope that what you're asking!

Yup.
ok, now i'm getting confused.
my p600 is still on 4.3 jellybean. but from what i read, as long as did not update to kitkat firmware, i can still unroot and reverse the warranty bit bcoz they don't have knox yet. but it'll be too late if i updated to kikat right? btw, i used cf-auto-root.
just weeks ago i rooted my p600 and flashed stock recovery, so now my p600 thinks its stock official firmware, even say so in about device.
i haven't tried unrooting it yet to confirm that i can get warrenty back by flashing back whole stock firmware bcoz i don't want to redo all settings again. but thats the impression i'm geting.
anyhow if i can't really reverse that warranty thing i don't really care anyways. i warranty my stuff better than they do it, and since i think i can still get updates, it bothers me even less if its unreversible. but in the case if i'm right, and i can reverse that warranty bit. maybe one day i'd like to update to kitkat. then what? i'll have to have knox in my system and i can't reverse warranty counter anymore?
is there a way i can update to a custom kikat firmware (one day) and not have knox so i'll still be able to get warranty back?
i kind of realized the dilemma i have here since if i own the device for more than a yr, my warranty wouldn't matter anymore. am i just thinking too much and worrying myself?

Yes you're confused!!. Knox has nothing to do with warranty bit, once this tripped, you can't undo doesn't matter you on 4.3 or 4.4.
I'm a little confused on a few other issues. I have read over 40 pages on another thread here about rooting etc and I couldn't find the answer to a few questions. I've just successfully rooted using the most recent instructions (P600 - CF Auto root) but in earlier instructions (about a year ago) you had to also install the stock recovery file using Odin. Is that a necessary step? Is it needed for OTA updates? Since I've read that OTA updates will unroot and possibly prevent you from rooting at all, is it best to just forget about OTAs and flash up to date files from this site? Is it also prudent to turn off auto updating in the settings.
If I'm not installing custom roms and backed up using Titanium Pro do I really need to install TWRP? Any other benefits other than nandroid? Thanks

Once you rooted you can't use OTA update any more. So the easiest going forward is to flash TWRP and use it to flash pre-rooted rom from this site.
Thanks buhohitr
I guess I'm installing TWRP tonight. There are many versions up to 2.8 I think. Which one do you recommend for P600? I've tried searching for "installing TWRP" but there were no obvious hits like there were for rooting. Which is the key thread?
To my first question, I'm assuming that the later root methods automatically installs or leaves the stock recovery as earlier methods needed to load it. Am I right?

OK found the thread and I just read the last 55 pages (that took a while) and boy is it scary. So many problems. Touch not accurate, inverted screens, certain versions failing eg 2.7, can't access external SD card, continual looping, booting into the old recovery , OTG cables not working, time zones can't be set properly, some say turn off autoboot in odin and some say don't change default settings etc etc. the list goes on and on. I likened it to a bushfire or tornado. Some houses still stand and some don't and you want to know the silly thing here, I am an experienced computer teacher with a degree in computer science and I've upgraded firmware on over a hundred devices over the years and yet all this rooting and recovery stuff is another world. The rooting process, admittedly, was a piece of cake and the instructions for flashing TWRP seems easy too but after that there seems to be so many problems. So hit and miss.
All i want to do is load TWRP on a P600. I will only load custom ROMs when a new firmware version comes out. Can someone alleviate my fears who has successfully loaded TWRP recently on a P600 using ODIN without massive tweaking to get it going. What version TWRP did you use and did you turn off autoboot or not?
PS Have I posted this in the correct section?
Took the plunge and loaded the latest TWRP 2.8.1 and it worked perfectly except I could only back to the main SD storage and not my extSD. I ended up, as a work around, moving the backup files to the extSD drive and PC.
I think I was worried unnecessarily.
