My S3 has android 4.3. I'm aware you cannot flash via Odin and downgrade the firmware to a earlier firmware such as 4.0.4. But, would I be able to flash a rom based on 4.0.4.?
Should be able to, as long as its not firmware with Odin

I am not sure what you mean, you say have flashed the latest MDL in odin and then you say you are on the latest OTA, it cannot be both.
You are either on the latest OTA or you are on the latest official FULL Samsung MDL Jellybean v4.2.2 stock rom which you say you flashed in Odin.
So which is it?
If you are indeed on the latest OTA as you have stated then here is what needs to be done to get MDL as your baseband.
You need to Odin flash the FULL Samsung Touchwiz Jellybean MDL v4.2.2 stock rom.
After doing that you will have MDL but you will need to get yourself rooted.
Here is the link to the FULL Odin flash rom: http://k0nane.info/rom/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip
The OTA upgrade is just that an upgrade it's not the same as flashing the full official stock jellybean MDL 4.2.2 rom.

My bad. What I did was installed the mdl full base in Odin. No ota, don't know why I mentioned it. I did a full wipe in my recovery then flashed the 1.6gb tar file in Odin. It took about 4 minutes, rebooted to the compete fresh stock Rom, and I have no Wi-Fi. In settings, the baseband says I'm on mdb. When I try to toggle Wi-Fi, it just won't switch on.

Is this filename below the exact same filename that you Odin flashed?
M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB_3.zip
If it's not the same filename, then download this rom from my previous post and Odin flash it and you will have MDL.
This is the file everyone has been using.

Yep. That's it. still no luck.
I had this issue when I first rooted my phone, flash a custom kernel from thread...that will fix you up.
Hi everyone!
My gf's GS3 is running CM11 but she runs across various issues in every custom ROM I flash onto her phone so I decided I should just flash stock 4.4.2. I have heard that in mobile Odin I should make sure that the modem or bootloader does not downgrade. I remember that I did flash the I747MVLUEMK5 bootloader and the I747MUMUEND3 modem. Is it safe to say that I can use mobile odin to flash stock 4.4.2 as well as the bootloader and modem without having the fear that it will downgrade one of those? I am thinking this because I flashed those files BEFORE kitkat was released, which has to mean that the 4.4.2 bootloader and modem are newer. Sorry if I'm not clear or that I repeat myself a lot I just try to spit all the information I have because the last thing I'd want is a bricked device.
Thanks Everyone!!!!
Only flash 4.4.2 with mobile odin if you have already fully updated to 4.4.2! It is not capable of flashing mist of the base firmware, including the bootloader. But it does flash the modem, and if you get a 4.4.2 modem on 4.3 firmware/bootloaders,...permanent brick!

What if I don't use mobile odin? By using regular odin can I just ignore all of this and flash 4.4.2? Can PC Odin flash the base firmware and bootloader?
Yes regular Odin will flash everything. After that it'll be safe to use mobile Odin.

Hi!
I have Galaxy Note 2 (N7100) running on stock 4.1.2 ROM and I want to update it to stock 4.4 ROM. Is it possible to update directly from 4.1 to 4.4 using Odin? Or maybe I should update it to 4.3 and then to 4.4? Which version of Odin should I use? 3.09 would be ok?
Any tips or things that I should be careful of?

Method 1st: (ideally u shud use this method)
If you are not rooted, you should use phone software update to upgrade to 4.4.2.
If you are rooted, you will have to use triangleaway to reset flash counter and use supersu to fully unroot. Then upgrade using software update in phone.
Method 2nd:
3.09 is best Odin version to use. Just download the stock rom, dump it in AP tab and flash. Done.
Press thumps up if you found this suggestion helpful.

I'm not rooted and running stock 4.1.2 but somehow OTA update in phone does not work. I'm pressing to check for updates and nothing happens at all (tried many times, restarting phone etc). So I want to do it using Odin. OK Odin v3.09 but what about version? Do I need to flash 4.3 first and then 4.4? Or can I flash 4.4 at once?

No need to flash 4.3.
First things first. Just make EFS backup using Dr.Ketan's Multitool. Transfer it to PC or cloud for safe keeping.
To upgrade you have 2 options:
1. PC ODIN 3.09 --> Download 4.4.2 firmware for your region from sammobile or samsung-updates and flash with Odin as explained earlier.
Note that you cannot downgrade the 4.4.2 bootloader, ever.
2. Mobile ODIN PRO --> To use this you need to be rooted. Once rooted download the apk file from play store and flash your 4.4.2 firmware. This will keep the bootloader as it is but will flash everything else.
Note: You won't be able to charge the battery when the phone is off. And you may face wifi problem due to old bootloader. If you face these problems, you have no choice but to use pc odin.

I'm currently on MJB and I'm looking to update my bootloader/modem combo to the NE4, but before doing so I'd like to have on hand a stock NE4 Rom to fall back on if needed (since I can't use the stock MJB one that I have at that point).
I've been looking around but can't seem to find a Stock NE4 file. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you.

There is no stock NE4 firmware because AT&T never released it and was only available via OTA updates.
This may help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/general/ucuemjb-to-ucufne4-firmware-update-t2808654

Is there a stock NJ1?
I guess what I'm trying to get at is how far can I go updating and still have a safe way of recovering to stock if anything were to go wrong?
(I used to flash LK3 stock when I'd run into problems and just go from there, but I understand with these you cannot downgrade or it'll brick)

There is no stock AT&T ROM beyond LK3. Once you are on mjb, you can only flash stock ROMs that have been specifically compiled for flashing via Odin or TWRP/CWM.
If you want to revert back to stock from a custom ROM, look for stock flashable ROM on the general section of the i747 forum.
I have a question, I have rooted N900T, and upgraded to Lollipop FOB6 by using Odin CF method.
before using Odin, I backed up my KK rom.
my question is, since the bootloader is updated on the 5.0 version, if I want to downgrade to my previous kitkat rom, can I flash my previous backed up rom through twrp recovery? or the process will break the phone?
what if I do a complete wipe and flash 4.4.4 through Odin? I've heard since they're different bootloader, I can not downgrade.
plz help
I downgraded down to 4.4.2 NK3 Kitkat last night from 5.0 lollipop using Odin on the PC. It worked perfectly fine with no issues. Not sure if you can restore your Kitkat backup though. I would suggest doing a clean install with the 4.4.2 NK3 tar file found here on XDA.

thanks for the reply, I think that's the safest way.

Sure do your backup via twrp or your choice of recovery, save your kk rom to it in a backup. Then do the same in your LP rom. I do this with all 3 OS roms B6 kk rom, Alliance 5.0 rom and resurrection remix 6.0.1 rom it just takes a few min to do in liu of the restore time it takes.
