Please help - I fear my Nexus is bricked - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi,
I'm sorry to trouble you all, but I fear that my lovely new tablet is bricked
I unlocked/rooted 6 days ago using Wug's tool and everything has been fine. Turned the tablet on today and all i get is the white google logo and the unlocked symbol at the bottom.
I can't get to bootloader or recovery by the power/volume buttons. If i hold down power and vol down for long enough I get a picture of a dead android with a red warning triangle over his chest
There is a windows sound when the device is plugged in via USB, but nothing appears in device manager.
As such, I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do, can anyone help please?

Close to impossible to brick a nexus device.
Recommend downloading the factory image, unzip and run the flash all batch file.

Shut down nexus 7. Now hold volume down and power. When you see the next screen you will press up until the you see recovery mode. Now press power and you will see the Android guy and the red exclamation point. Hold the power and the volume up. You should now be in recovery mode. Use fastboot commands to restore.

My nexus 7 had this issue and my friend told me your eMMC chip is wasted. I gave my little nephew my tablet to play with and i started using it like a mousepad. Just one day i tried pressing these keys at random and my device booted up.
I flashed it so many times unknowgingly this was issue.
Can i ask, why this even happens ?

[Q] Non-working, rooted and still under warrenty. Nothing I can do?

I've got a dilemma. My rooted Verizon GNex just stopped working today. Yesterday, it was working fine. I plugged it up at night before bed and about an hour ago, I grab it off the charge. Nothing happened when I hit the power button which was strange because I never turn it off and I didn't let the battery die. I pressed and held and "Google" and the little lock on the bottom came up so I set the phone down while it powered on. 5 minutes later, it's still in that state, then a few seconds later, the screen goes black and nothing happened. I took the battery out and put it back in twice and nothing happens. I can't remember downloading any apps other than Zagat and a guide for Ingress in the last few days. A PDF online or two. What do I do with a rooted phone that's still under warranty (just barely so time is a factor)? Can they really check if the phone won't even turn on?
My old roommate sent her unlocked/rooted Gnex back to VZW when her charging port stopped working. They never charged her for it or anything, but it did say something like "you would be responsible to pay $X if rooted blah blah.." Either they are bluffing or she slipped in.
Did you try clearing data, factory reset?
How can I do a factor reset if it won't turn on? All I know is pulling the battery or holding the power and volume buttons at once.

I don't think a factory reset wipes root.
If you hold volume (-) and power from a powered off state can you boot to fastboot mode and is it still recognized by your PC?

Unless it's different on the VZW than a GSM phone you need to hold volume up & volume down + power to get to the bootloader (fastboot mode)

With the phone off hold both volume buttons and the power button, then use the down volume key to navigate to recovery, and power to select the option. Once in recovery you will see wipe data/ factory reset option.
Also if you have a backup you can restore it from recovery.

No a factory reset wont wipe root, but if it solves his problem and the phone is functional again he wont need to exchange it through warranty, so no need to unroot.
Holy crud that worked! It's on and it shows the green start arrow pointing toward the power button which does nothing when I press it (I hear some Samsungs have issues with the power button not working). Under the Android bot it says, "Downloading... Do not turn off target!" but my PC (W7) couldn't download whatever driver it needed. And I just realized I do have the Wugs toolkit. Can I unroot if I'm unable to get critical buttons on my phone top act properly?
Try the factory reset first. If that works you get to keep the phone like WiredPirate said. Check out this guide to install drivers and flash stock Google images if you have to.

Edit: sorry I have been up for a while. Power off the phone. Pull battery if you need to. Power + BOTH volume buttons at the same time. Use the volume keys to navigate to recovery mode and power to select it. If the phone will boot to recovery try a factory reset and reboot. If that works, awesome. If not follow the guide above to flash the phone to stock.

Instead of plugging it up to your computer before/after it boots, can you press the volume down key twice for it to display "recovery" on that green arrow?.. Then hit the power button to boot into recovery. No USB, no toolkit or computer. Then do a factory reset and/or restore a backup and see if the phone boots normal.
It wasn't working working without being plugged up to the computer and now the phone is on the lock screen. What I'm going to do is unroot, backup, and decide whether or not to take it to Verizon. I want to but if I can't actually show them anything, I wonder what they'll do. Looks like everything seemss normal for now. Thanks for the help!
Oh okay, well good deal.. Glad everything is back to a more stable state now. :good:

I have got the same Problem (though GSM version)! I cant boot up my system. When I turn the device on the Google screen appears along with the unlocked lock.
I have already tried to full whipe it and restore it but it did not work. Bevore that the restore did not work either!

Delete the drivers you see for the phone inside of device manager. Now go back to that topic, scroll all the way up to the very beginning and follow the steps. It tells you exactly how to correctly install the drivers to get your phone recognized.

[Q] Unusual Brick

I was performing a recovery last night after trying a couple of different ROMs using TWRP 2.5.0.0. This morning I tried to turn on the phone but there was no power to the screen. The most I could get it to do was have the power LED show when plugged in, or briefly show the charge screen when it's plugged in as well.
I am still able to get into Download Mode, so I tried going back to stock with LGNPST. I noticed under Model it shows Unknown. After flashing, it'll just bootloop to the LG screen and still won't even bother powering when unplugged. Before or after flashing, I was unable to get into Recovery Mode.
The last ROM I was on was SuperNexus, attempting recovery to Lifeless. Or at least I'm pretty sure it was Lifeless, as it was one of the few ROMS where camera natively works.
The only other clue I can give to this problem is that I told TWRP to recover EVERYTHING, including things like cache. This never gave me a problem before, so this is unusual. The backup, to my knowledge, didn't have compression. Another oddity I found before performing the recovery is that the recovery files were not immediately available. I had to tap on my storage directory and select internal storage.
I didn't find this topic with the keywords I searched for, so little scary if this is the first problem of its kind. Any ideas?
If LGNPST boot loops then all you have to do is factory reset.

Can you ADb install/side load the recovery ? Can't remember the exact commands but I'm certain a quick Google should tell you,
Something to note, I think the phone's dependant upon USB power on the observation that the LG screen cuts out as soon as I pull the plug.

If he did lgnpst he isn't rooted or unlocked.
I think you should connect the charger on the wall for a good while, same thing happened to me I thought I bricked so I left it on the charger for like an hour and then I was able to get into recovery.

The only mode I can get into so far is Download Mode. Does that state receive ADB commands, or does it only talk with LGNPST?

I didn't think it out good enough like sharky said your not rooted or unlocked so it wouldn't work.... Sorry 4 bad advice
Just tried flashing a TinyBeen recovery as those have traditionally been more reliable for me than stock recovery. Still a no-go for booting into Recovery. I go through the key-presses and it'll go to a black, unpowered screen. I'll press the keys for Recovery mode and it goes back into its bootloop. Screen for loop this time is charge indicator.
Try holding down the power button and the volume down button, after the led lights flash release the power button while still holding down the volume down button. That should get you to stock recovery to factory wipe

turn off the phone completely, then hold the vol down, power, and where the home button is at the same time til the captive lights flash then let go. this will get you into stock recovery where you can do a factory reset. this will erase ALL DATA is the only downside

Were you on a nearly dead charge? My phone was left on my computer the entire night. My USB ports maintain power after shutdown so I'm able to charge of my PC. My battery should have a full charge. I'm wondering if it needs a genuine battery pull or if memory has been corrupted as LGNPST doesn't recognize what it is anymore.

For myself and this particular hardware recovery is non-functional.
Attempted a reflash to stock in order to try recovery one more time. Still a no-go. Once the capacitive lights are lit, it just powers down. What would cause LGNPST to not recognize the hardware?
Le sigh... I think it's officially a paperweight unless LG is willing to take another look at it. At least it's on stock, so I have a small chance.
Damn, maybe the device is too low to access recovery. The only the thing I can think of is taking off the back and do a manual battery pull. If that doesn't solve the problem then send it in. Good luck man

Pwr Off (by holding onto power button for like 30 seconds). Vol down + power... wait until buttons light up. Immediately release power button while still holding vol down. You will boot into stock recovery. Select Factory Reset.

[Q] QHSUSB_DLOAD... uh oh.

ROM: ParanoidAndroid 3.91
Happened after rebooting when attempting to access twrp recovery. Initially the "battery charging" symbol did show up, but after holding power and volume up+down it's now bricked.
So far I've tried holding power while plugged/unplugged and holding power + volume up+down for 20s while plugged into a computer, and using the adb reboot command (even though it doesn't show up in adb devices).
I'm guessing the responses I'm going to get are:
1) You shouldn't have rooted/flashed your tablet
and
2) you should RMA
So yep... realize that's the general consensus for QHSUSB_DLOAD issues but thought maybe the nexus 7 in particular might have a fix. Or I guess I'm just hoping the "it's dead RMA it" solution is outdated now.
Usually that means the bootloader can't be accessed but there was a person earlier who had the problem and was able to recover

This is a corrupted bootloader. Some have tried holding the power button down for 20-30 seconds. You will most likely need a new motherboard if you cannot access fastboot.

Help. S3 keeps rebooting

Im running jovy stockorama everything has been great. Until today idk if its rom issue or just the phone issue. It keeps booting to the galaxy s3 screen and vibrates and turns on again its a loop. I tried going into recovery it doesnt work also cant get into download mode. Please help (
The ROM is dated you may want to try another ROM.
Pull battery out of phone and put it back in and do the following:
For recovery: hold volume up, home button and power button until you feel the phone vibrate and you see small blue text in the upper left side of the screen.
For download mode: volume down, home button and power button until you feel the device vibrate.

If absolutely nothing changed, and you can test another battery, it's a hardware failure most likely.
Possibly the power button is stuck keeping contact too. Been seeing more of these recently.

2) How do you turn on the phone without the power button?

First off make sure you are flashing through TWRP correctly .
1) Flash Devlic Three Times
2)Wipe Cache Three Times
3) Wipe System Three Times
4)Wipe System Three Times and make sure you have your ROM backed up and have the correct Gapps.
Doing all of this will fix your problem I had the same problem too.

Careful there! This is often a hardware issue. If he does this and it is hw, it may make things more difficult.
Make sure it's your Rom/firmware causing the problem first.

True, one time I did download a Cyanogen ROM my cousin sent me but the ROM was a dud. At first I thought I had bricked my phone so I spent sever hours on twrp flashing different ROMS over and over again that I had and I installed the wrong gapps so my phone died and I had to take out my sd card and download a different ROM and I fixed it. Basically just be careful where you download your roms from.

restore stock recovery? Nexus 7

Hi all. Just taking my Nexus 7 back to stock as Im selling it to a young friend that is not going to need root or custom recovery or bootloader unlocked. I have now got a nexus 10.
When I got the tablet I used Nexus root toolkit to unlock / root and TWRP. I have installed Nexus root toolkit v1.7.2 back on my windows pc. I followed this video off the nexus root toolkit site for unrooting relocking.
Did everything as I was told and tablet went back to stock unrooted & locked. But when I tryed the recovery option in the bootloader I get a dead android with red triangle on him with ! in it.
Opened up nexus toolkit again and had a look in advanced Utilities and did the Restore stock recovery option. still not help still get dead android.
Any ideas? I have downloaded the stock image from developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Thanks

Also forgot to say. im running android 4.3 and build: JSS15R
Ok think its sorted lol.
Just been surfing net for last hour and found this.
Shut down nexus 7
Hold volume down and power
At the next screen, press up until it says recovery mode
Press power
You then get the Android with red exclamation
Press power, hold it and then press volume up
This should give the recovery menu.
Result!

Is it normal for the Stock Recovery to be entered through this way? Surely it should just boot into stock recovery from the bootloader menu?
