Hi all. Just taking my Nexus 7 back to stock as Im selling it to a young friend that is not going to need root or custom recovery or bootloader unlocked. I have now got a nexus 10.
When I got the tablet I used Nexus root toolkit to unlock / root and TWRP. I have installed Nexus root toolkit v1.7.2 back on my windows pc. I followed this video off the nexus root toolkit site for unrooting relocking.
Did everything as I was told and tablet went back to stock unrooted & locked. But when I tryed the recovery option in the bootloader I get a dead android with red triangle on him with ! in it.
Opened up nexus toolkit again and had a look in advanced Utilities and did the Restore stock recovery option. still not help still get dead android.
Any ideas? I have downloaded the stock image from developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Thanks

Also forgot to say. im running android 4.3 and build: JSS15R
Ok think its sorted lol.
Just been surfing net for last hour and found this.
Shut down nexus 7
Hold volume down and power
At the next screen, press up until it says recovery mode
Press power
You then get the Android with red exclamation
Press power, hold it and then press volume up
This should give the recovery menu.
Result!

Is it normal for the Stock Recovery to be entered through this way? Surely it should just boot into stock recovery from the bootloader menu?
Related
as the title says the recovery wont boot using rom manager
it will either
1.) reboot loop 3 or 4 time before restarting or
2.) go to a screen with the android ad an exclamation mark in a triangle
i also can not manually boot it into recovery by holding home+ power
any advice is greatly appreciated
ps im a little noobie ish
press the HOME + POWER...
Once you on the "exclamation mark in a triangle" screen press the HOME + POWER key to get the recovery menu. As far I know this means something about the ROM signature not being there or something.. I'm just learning myself, but I have been there before... so you just need to restore the backup image and you should be back to normal. Good luck.
I'm unable to apply a custom ROM myself... everything works but a custom ROM... can't figure it out yet.

I need to return my Galaxy Nexus (GSM) for an exchange and I'm trying to restore everything back to stock but I'm having a problem with the recovery.
Please tell me if I'm doing this right. I turn on the phone by pressing the volume and power button to get into fastboot. Then I navigate into recovery and press the power button to select recovery.
This brings me to the broken android with the exclamation mark. I've read stuff about pressing volume up and power to go into the recovery.
I want to know if this is normal or if it should take me straight to recovery without seeing the broken android.

Use the GNexus Tool kit to download and flash the Google Stock image. Afterwards just relock the bootloader and you're all set.
That's nice. You didn't really help at all. No answer to the question and you didn't point me to the right place to post this.

Thanks for the response. So, the behavior I'm seeing on my device isn't normal. I just used the Wugfresh tool to restore to stock but I still can't get into the recovery without doing volume up + power.
hold both volume button down and power, then when you get to bootloader volume down til you get to recovery then power to select

That's what I did. After I select the recovery, it brings up the broken android with the exclamation mark. I'm able to get into recovery by pressing volume up and power. I just want to know if that's normal.
The Android with the exclamation mark is completely normal for the stock recovery. To get to the menu, you (copied from mskip's toolkit thread)

Hold the Power button and keep holding as you press the Volume Up button. The blue recovery menu screen should pop up.

That is normal :good:
You may also want to lock the bootloader too, I guess.

Thank you very much for the above answer. That's all I wanted to know before returning the phone.*
Q&A noted for my next question. I've been reading this stuff on this website for about 4 years now. First time I had to post a question. Thanks again.

Huh... Pull the battery out, and place it back in.
Press power +volume up +volume down to enter fastboot, then follow efrant's guide to return to stock. There's also a party about rooting.

I'm trying to clear my caches because my battery is doing some funny stuff every since I got the tablet. Just constantly being used up, even over night it drops 25% when I'm not doing anything. I've only downloaded a few apps but it says "Android OS" is what's taking 50% of the battery.
So I get into Recovery by turning off the device, holding power + Vol. down and then I select Recovery mode.
But all I get is an image of the Android with it's belly open and it says "No command."
How do I get to where I can run everything?
Please help!
Thanks!
Is your bootloader unlocked and have you rooted the device yet? The only way I know how to clear the caches through recovery is by doing that first and installing a custom recovery like twrp. If you aren't rooted yet and don't want to root the device I would suggest doing a factory reset first and see if that helps. To do a factory reset go to settings --> backup & reset.

You can do a factory reset like the previous poster mentioned.
If you want to get the stock recovery menu from the android fallen screen, press volUp.
Here is your answer if you cannot get in to the os. The commands will not show up unless you do a two button combo. You can get in to stock recovery by doing the following.
When powered off
Hold power+vol down
When bootloader screen comes up
Use volume down to select recovery and then hit the power button
It will then go in to recovery but only show an android with exclamation point.
From here to see command you have to press power + the middle of the volume button (There is a middle button here) Saw the button in the teardown.
From here you can do a factory reset of the device also.

Yeah this didn't work. I know I got into recovery once without being rooted, but that was on a different device.
I did a factory reset so we'll see if that helps. But it isn't looking like it....
No apps downloaded, only on wifi, brightness is all the way down, turned off location services and the "Android OS" is still taking the battery. It's at 96% after an hour and a half of literally not using it at all...
When you get to the screen with the android and !, press and hold the power button and then press the vol up. No other combination will work. You can not press the buttons at the same time.

There is writeup on how to enter recovery here:

Hi all,
I need some help.
I am trying to help a friend who uses this phone model since 4.3 for I9250 has been out since June this year and his phone still not getting the update. He is still running on stock non rooted but it seems that the last update he got was 4.2.1, not 4.2.2. Tried the OTA but it doesn't detect the new version. I found a guide to install 4.3 manually from ibtimes.uk site but i got stuck at the last step where i need to invoke the Recovery Menu after getting the exclamation mark by pressing Vol Up + Power key. Pressing these two buttons after the exclamation mark appear does not do anything, and i have been pressing for more than a minute. Any ideas how to update his phone to 4.3 without rooting it?
P/S : Can i manually push the 4.2.2 update via ODIN instead, and then push 4.3?
Recovery is volume up and down with the power button.
