I don't think that they are gonna update the Xperia S anymore. It's a shame as it's a good device, I hope they don't do the same and abandon my Z1 after 18 months like they did with this device. Hopefully tho they might update this but it's very unlikely

Abandon? You expecting lifetime of updates? They didn't abandon Xperia S. The current firmware is fine.

Why must there be? There are unofficial versions, just use those. Are you expecting Sony to keep every single phone they ever released up to date? There must be hundreds by now (okay that was a hyperbole, 48 according to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Xperia), noone can keep up with that. If you must blame anyone or anything for the short while that phones are getting updates, blame Android because it's so hard to install on hardware (compared to more classic PC OS's like Windows and Ubuntu/Pick-Your-Favorite-Linux-Distro). Not even the Galaxy Nexus got an update to Android 4.4, and if there was one Nexus that was most like our Fuji-phones it was that one. So if our generation's Nexus isn't even getting any updates anymore, how do you expect a non-Nexus device to get that update.
Seriously, I don't like this either, so ever since KitKat I haven't run a stock ROM. Now you've learned that if stock updates are important to you, you should get a Nexus or a Google Play Edition device. Sony has been known not to be very good in providing long term updates ever since the Xperia X10 (their very first Android phone). And if you can't afford to get a new phone every 2 years (because that's how long it'll be relevant), you should stop being so sensitive about updates and be happy with what you have.

Best not buy a HTC, support isn't great there either. The One X(L) isn't going beyond Android 4.2. If this is important to you, there's only q Nexus, a Google Play Edition phone or maybe a Motorola Moto X but we still have to see how long Motorola is going to support phones now they're part of Google.
And indeed we wouldn't be much without Rayman or bilchen. But it's like this for the vast majority of Android devices.

I tried several KK-based roms for xperia S, but all gave me random reboots
had some on 4.3, but with 4.4 I have too many to be stable as dayly driver.
i guess they all use the same kernel (open semc), that could explain why the all have it?
but... why do some people claim to have no reboots, and others have em 'all the time'?
i'm now on nature rom (4.1) and no problems at all, it's a great rom, but i really like 4.4 as well.
will there be a stable kernel/version soon?

First of all, the XS it's not just another phone sony launched, its a flagship device that only got two major updates (one actually cause ics should have been out of the box) so I at least expected 4.2 or 4. 3, even Galaxy s2 got them
second, the galaxy nexus didn't get 4.4 because of Texas instruments (supposedly) and as long as other oems continue to update it means it's possible and we have every right to complain about it

HUGE requirements will continue the fragmentation.
Devices like the desire hd or similar, wich gets ics, but will be stuck on 4.0.
About 30% will be stuck on GB because of the grow of android this year, but will be smaller, as most new devices launch with ics.
And so on.
Updating should be like IOS, when an ipad 1 or iphone 3gs is still upgradeable to ios 5.1.1, wich has been released 2 weeks ago.
These are limited in the app store, but who cares?

That's the difference between a monopolized environment and a liberal one. Monopoly is easier to control, predict and dictate. But don't be as naive as to think apple doesn't turn obsolete old equipment with their OS upgrades. The timeline is just much more dilated than those of the less controled environments.
Samsung has released a list of devices that are scheduled to be updated to Jelly Bean. Missing from this list is the Captivate Glide. Oddly enough, they've chosen the Galaxy Chat (a phone that clocks in with a single-core, 850 MHz processor and a 1200 mAh battery) as the qwerty phone to update. (Indeed, all the phones to be updated are "Galaxy" phones.)
Source: The Verge
If our phone can run ICS, it can run JB, Samsung can't try to blame TouchWiz in this case like they did with the first Galaxy S when they said that the phone was in fact capable of running ICS, but not with TouchWiz, in our case, if the phone can run ICS with TouchWiz, it can run JB with TouchWiz.
So, please, Samsung, enough with the BS, and start working on JB for the Glide, I don't want to have to wait till 2013 to get the proper JB Source Code, because, that's the only thing that matters for me, the Source Code with the propietary drivers, because, let's be honest, who the f*ck wants JB with TouchWiz on top of it ? I want pure, stock, unmodded, untouched, vanilla Android.
It's no surprise, really. Doing ICS for the Glide has proven to be a hell of a lot more work than they anticipated and it's only sticking to their word that's keeping them at it.
We WILL have Jellybean ROMs of our own. There's no important kernel differences, it will come in time. Have patience, this is a ***** of a phone to develop for.
If Samsung Galaxy R gets Jelly Bean, then there's very, very good chance that we, me, and you will get to have Jelly Bean OS, just it's difficult to develop something that work, due to the difficulty of dealing with the useless digital blobs. It's like building a house without the foundation AND excepting it to stand.

Aren't updates for carrier based phones dependent on carriers (in this case AT&T or Rogers)? So Samsung won't comment on those phones. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Didn't At&T make the initial announcement last time for ICS?
That is one thing I hate about Android, the updates and not getting them.I must admit my next phone may be a nexus as those always get the updates since they are the ones Android is developed for. I may have to say by to the hardware keyboard and replace it with a Bluetooth keyboard case. Till then 2 more years with my glide and what ever little updates that intakes.

I can tell you if you are expecting to have an AT rom for jelly bean they will mes that one as they did with the ics rom update. So i wont install any att rom from samsung and will wait for the dman to provides his custom rom and will have no more at bloat ware and it will bea vanillia experience of android ICs and Jelly bean since he is working with pure Android code from google AOsP, and AOKPA. Good news
Back in June, we reported of a new Sony Xperia S (LT26i) firmware update that was rumoured to arrive in early July. Well obviously that did not come to pass, but apparently a new update is still on the agenda for Xperia S/SL owners. Sony pretty much confirmed as much on the official support forums, saying that it will have build version number 6.2.B.1.XX. There’s no ETA for the update, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.

I actually prefer 4.1 ROMs on xs coz they're much more stable compared to 4.2. I have had battery issues with 4.2 ROMs on xs. Hope Sony release a faster, more stable and more efficient 4.1 rather than 4.2. Lets not forget xs runs on over 2 year old cpu.
[OT]My Wildfire S runs with CM10.1 nearly better than with Stock 2.3.5. But let's not forget it has a CPU that was already 2-3 years old when it was released (ARMv6 generation). [/OT]

Would it still be possible even though Qualcomm has stopped support for S3 snapdragon chipsets?
None!
Simple as that...

i think the same, there are no chance of getting android 4.4 kitkat.at the most we may get 4.2 or 4.3 jelly bean but there are only 2% chances :fingers-crossed: lets hope for the best.but we may get the taste of android 4.4 by great xda developers with less feature that depend on any new type of hardware
That's the weird thing 4.2 & 4.3 are said to be more hardware intensive than 4.4 and it is most unlikely we will get them for our devices.
Yet a lot of websites mention its likely that 4.4 will hit the Xperia family including the S.
What is also been said is 4.4 will or has been designed to run on aged out devices from:
512 RAM
Single low clock speed processors
And our phones come in the mid range of the Xperia family.
Which exceed the suggested minimum basic specs nneeded.
I wish Sony could just say yes or no wether it was possible as I don't want to upgrade as its only been 6 months since I got this device it's ggood but I was surprised how quickly this was shunned and newer devices came out from Sony.
When I see Z1 released with 4.2.2, 4.4 for XS is just a dream.
Sony must sell Z1 as new flagship and it certainly won't update and support 2011/12 device anymore.
I would like that, of course but that won't happen.
I'm trying to find unlockable Z1 in Croatia - I really like that device.

there's rumour about Z1 will get 4.4 in november
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z1_rumored_to_get_android_44_update_in_november-news-6942.php
if that's true then great, finally sony updates the device quickly
this is a good sign, cause I still want sony for my next device
but for XS... I don't think so
just hope with rayman in the CAF kernel.. but it will not come soon.. and you ask too early
Many website said for 4.4 is just false rumour

Hmm...
Screen isn't really bad it's great HD screen but some users reported that they have that stupid yellow tint over screen.
And that's extremely annoying from Sony.
I'll buy it but only and if I can check it first (I already arranged that).
There's great little piece of software for screen testing so I'll use that.

yes yes. its just a dream. will not came
Well letama may make a 4.4 build for xperia s
And xperia s isnt slow, stock rom its self is heavy, roms like cm10 are rocket fast on xperia s
We may just get 4.4 if we ask letama or raymanFX kindly
Sent from my LT26i using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
you will receive even 5.0 if came out.. But stability may be problem.
Anyway, i am on the way to upgrade to Z1.
I believe 4.4 will come some time later.
Some expert in XDA will make it. But Sony wont
remember snapdragon has stopped supporting s3 cpu that's why there's no kernel for jb 4.2 and 4.3
yeah experts in XDA are making it now but i dont think sony cares about it
Our lovely Xperia S is now an orphan. Only users care about it
The performance can definietly do 4.2 4.3 or 4.4, but sony just want us to buy new phones
I saw this in some site.. Can someone translate this.. I think we may get 4.4.. :silly:
Just look on the side of picture (Right) which phones will get it
edit: Sorry i missread.
Ignore this post.

As we can see, Many manufacturers like Samsung, HTC have already updated their flagship with 4.3 which is we are yet to receive. HTC already announced 4.4 will be available in 90 days that's by Jan end. Can we expect it any sooner

4.4? Hardly likely. There'll be a 4.3, I'm sure, but I don't believe there's going to be a 4.4. The Z1 and, possibly, the Z Ultra, being the latest flagships, I feel, would be the only candidates for it.

From 4.2 to 4.3 officially there is no difference except for smoothness, and richer use gpu. As far as 4.4, wise battery usage, full screen mode in apps, richer gpu, better integration of hangout, well memory management. I don think Sony would give up on their phones in just 8 months.

Hi.
This may help people understand why the updates take so long:
www.developer.sonymobile.com/2013/0...-process-and-its-improvements-for-android-4-3
Btw, does the ZL still gets warm easily, like from 23°C to 44° C (73 F / 111 F), while playing games (NFS MW, or other "heavy tasks") on 4.2.2? (Mine is running 4.1.2)
It's quite annoying :/ I've heard the Media Server battery leak has been corrected, at least. Heard nothing about the warming problem.
I'm quite sure 4.4 will be available for the Z series. Isn't it supposed to be optimized to support even 512MB RAM devices?

Thanks for your reply. Can you specify if your ZL really getting hot is on 4.2.2? Have you tried any 4.3 based ROM?
Is there any? I'm about to update from 4.1.2 and I'm wondering if this warming issue is still there :/
Seems like the waiting is too long for some. Ha.
4.4 will be here for the ZL as Sony wants to get its goal to be the third biggest smartphone maker, if it wants it,
it needs to support its devices.
But, can we just have a bug-free Jelly Bean mean while? Dang. Any custom 4.2.2 ROM?
The new features of Kit Kat are really appealing, several of them, actually n.n

4.2.2 stock rom is not bad except that heating issue. Update is really improved performance. and for 4.3 you can try cm Rom for which you have to unlock bootloader. So I have not tried any. As per recent tweets 4.3 and 4.4 news will out this week. I don see any problem updating to 4.2.2. If you don't like it you can flash back previous Rom.

Thanks! I'll update to 4.2.2 in some hours... It's 4:15 AM here in Peru n.n How bad the heating issue is still present.
I may try a 4.3 ROM so I can see if it's fixed :/ It's possible to relock the bootloader. Don't want to try?
Yeah, some more days and well have news about 4.3 and 4.4. I hope Sony gives us dates for the oficial 4.3 updates and
positive news for us about 4.4. I've never been the updates fan, my Xperia Pro never got to ICS... It's running so nicely with GB til now.
But 4.4 does have several interesting improvements. Maybe I can update it to 4.4!
Does anyone know what does it take for a device to be suitable for 4.4 update?
As there has been words about 4.4 for older devices.
Maybe it's too son to ask n.n

What heat issue? 44c is pretty normal...
You're running a game on 1920x1080 without any active cooling in a closed device.
Heck the next gen consoles can't even run 1920x1080 on their platform.

It's an issue because not ALL (not even many) other smartphones like this one (full HD, no active cooling) have this heating problem.
Does the Galaxy S4 heats like this? Does the Xperia Z1, maybe?
I know the processor and GPU are working and are making use of energy thus some heat is normal,
but that the device goes from iddle 23° C to 37 and 44° C after not 20 minutes of playing is definitely an issue.
It even gets warm when browsing (Dolphin). This is annoying. Other than that, the device is excelent.
My Razr i only rarely used to get this hot! Actually, I can remember only 2 times when it got to 44° C
and I think it was because of a bug caused by Fuit Ninja, cause in 5 months of playing and using it dialy it never got hot
like the ZL on 4.1.2 and the latest 2.67 build. (As said coolrevi).
I used to use the Razr i proportionally the same as I use the ZL. So, no, it definitely something to look into. I hope official 4.3
and later 4.4 have this problem solved. Or, I don't know, maybe I have a defective unit!

Although I'm more a fan of stock/official ROMs, I'm about to flash this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228436
[ROM][ZL][JB 4.2.2][PA3.60][AOKP-MR1][CM10.1]P.A.C True All in 1 ROM
You must know it. It combines cm10.1, AOKP and AOSPA.
I'm going to try it as I read it's stable and good enough!

Reply: Been using this as my daily driver since the day I bought my phone. Works exactly as you would expect.
IR doesn't work on any custom rom so far and you'd have to use something like titanium backup to move apps to SD.
The camera button works just fine. All in all flash with confidence.

Have you tried DIRECTORY BIND in your ZL?
I don't have an SD card in the moment so I can't test, anyone
knows if Directory Bind works for the ZL in 4.1 or 4.2? Mine is running stock 4.2.
Let's go to the Sony Twitter acc and news room to ask for this feature in 4.3 and 4.4!

Pd: Looks like battery is draining in no more than 10 hours of moderate to constant
usage, no gaming, all staminas on and screen brightness at 15%.
Is this normal for 4.2 in the ZL or should I perform a factory reset
cause I didn't do it when I flashed stock 4.2 on my carrier's 4.1... Sorry for the of topic. I'm on the go!
