Only see grey and white stripes and some other colored dots on screen when turned on - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Yesterday, when I tried to use my note 2 in the middle of the day, I found the phone stuck at the Samsung galaxy logo. I took the battery out, then put it back. This time I won't even able to see the note 2 logo when trying to turn on the phone. All I have seen is a relative grey screen with white horizontal stripes parallel to each other and some dots in different colors randomly scattered on the screen. Tried to hold VOLUME + Home + Power, I was able to enter the warning screen and see the warning clearly. So I don't think it is something wrong with the screen. Installed odin on my PC, but it seems the phone is not detected by odin.
Questions:
1. Have I lost everything on my phone?
2. What can I do to fix the problem?
3. If I lost all the data and apps, how do I get all the apps back after I can restore/reinstall the android?
Thanks for any help in advance. And suggestions, helpful links are appreciated.

Hi, I am in the same boat here. Rooted SGH-i317 running Jedi x2 on T-Mobile. It froze one day while searching in chrome browser. I pulled the battery, and now it only boots to the same white screen, with squiggly horizontal lines, it never even gets to the Samsung logo. I can get into download mode, but not recovery. Kies won't recognize the device but Odin does. I have tried flashing the most current official at&t KitKat build and a couple others, but it fails with a "no pit file". When I try to repartition with the pit file it fails as well. Wtf!
Thanks for any suggestions.

That's too bad. I was going to give this to my kids to fool around with. I guess it's a mixed blessing since Tmob screwed up my insurance, and ended up giving me a $300 discount on a new Note4.

Can you get into download mode??
With the phone off .. Press 1 (on the keyboard) and power. If so, maybe try to odin back to EC05 stock

good luck
If on boot after pulling battery it is still black and download mode shows nothing, and you have tried Odin (it works but you see nothing still) I am afraid you need to head to the Sprint store.

try to odin to ec05 stock ... leave your phone again for a while and see when you get your screen back if you can get to download mode and odin that stock rom ... this will allow you to see if it is something up with a rom you're running.
if it does it then, you'll be at stock so when you go to the sprint store; it won't be an issue.

I agree Odin back to stock is your best option and if that dosn't work you probaly stuck with a black screen!
Yes, if you got it to come on once by leaving it you should be able to do it again and Odin before making any calls.
I had no choice but to take it to the sprint store

Hey, I know this is an old post but I have an old Epic I'd like to see if I can trade into for credit towards a Galaxy S III but I'm having the exact same problem as described here:
Softkeys light up, screen hepatic feedback "buzz" can be felt, can swipe to unlock and answer a call based on blind-memory of what to swipe but other than that, the screen is completely black. Not black as in lit up but devoid of any other color except black, but gone dark.
If it weren't for the softkeys being lit, I would assume the screen were either broken or disconnected from the motherboard somehow. There are no cracks in the screen. Phone has seen better days for sure but the screen is intact and all functions were working perfectly before it simply...blipped off in front of my eyes.
I've tried doing as you did: charging it for 3+ hours and seeing if that worked at least temporarily. No go.
Assuming our two phones were experiencing exactly the same issue, can you tell me when you had it repaired, if the issue was a hardware or software issue? If hardware, did they have to replace the screen? or was it merely not connected properly somewhere?
If it was a software issue, how did they repair it? I'm assuming I can, in fact, get the phone into download mode, but without a visible screen, I can't boot off of a zip file or see if any of my actions are successful. Can't be sure I cleared the caches properly before I proceed, etc.
Phone was last running toadlife's CleanGB prior to the FC09 update and I'm pretty sure, prior to EL30 (I can't remember but I'm pretty sure it was).
Again, I know this is old but any feedback would be appreciated.

Hm, so you're saying download mode or recovery mode open up but with a black screen? But it still reads touches? My guess is it's hardware, a loose connection to the screen.
Yeeeeah, good luck towards funding your S3 purchase.

I'm having this issue have my phone was dropped yesterday, so I'm quite sure it's a hardware issue.
I have two questions: can somebody be so kind as to give me the button sequence for how to make a nandroid of my phone? I have CWM 5.0.2.7 without the 'one confirm' option. That would be awesome. Also, is anyone familiar with taking the phone apart and perhaps how to fix this issue?

Indeed. I'm running CM9 beta 2, and I'm pretty sure it came with 5.5. However Taz, I believe if you boot into recovery from ROM Manger or the power menu, it still takes you into your previous recovery version (such as 5.0.2.7). Or vice versa. I don't remember. To my knowledge, this is has something to with the switch to MTD, and the devs just have reroute that command.
But regardless, I'm not getting a new backup on my SD card, so I'm pretty sure I'm on 5.5. Kenny, do you know if there's a different button sequence for 5.5?
5.5 is the same. I would remove the battery to make sure it is powered off. Put the battery back in, hold camera, volume down and power in that order (making sure power is last) for 5 seconds. wait 20 seconds to make sure it booted into CWM 5.5. Then volume down 4 times then camera twice. Depending on how many apps you got I would wait 30 minutes before pulling the sd card to check in clockworkmod\backup directory for a new file with current date code.

[Q] Soft Bricked or Hard Bricked? (Please, PLEASE help!!!)

I have a SPH L710 galaxy s3 (sprint). I recently flashed a Rom called hyperdrive 4.1.2 that was on it's RLS11. following the instructions (factory reset x2, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe system), I then picked the features i wanted in the built in aroma installer and let the rom flash. When it was done I noticed i kept getting the message "the process com.android.phone has stopped". So i performed a clean install of my previous Rom which was Liquid Smooth.
A day or two later I noticed hyperdrive has released it's RLS 12, so i decided to give it another try. This time there was an option in the aroma installer for developer picks so i selected that, thinking my previous attempt i may have picked conflicting files in the aroma installer. The Rom worked fine for about a day. Then the next day while it was charging after the battery have completely died the night before. I noticed the phone had rebooted on its own, then it started going into a boot loop. I did a battery pull, and i noticed when i put it back in, before i could even hold the buttons to get it into recovery mode or download mode, the phone would vibrate and turn on by itself, without me pressing any buttons at all. After some trying i was able to have the buttons held so when i inserted the battery, i was already holding the buttons to try to get to recovery. When I did this it would say it was about to go into recovery, then the screen would go black. The same thing when I tried getting it into download mode, It would show the download mode screen, then go to a black screen. I Then did some research, after seeing no one else really having this problem, and noticing that since it was still seeing boot screens before the black screen, it shouldn't be a hard brick.
I decided to order a USB jig for my phone that came today. When inserted the battery with the usb jig the phone still turned on by itself, but it was able to go to download mode and it stayed at the screen. I used odin 3.07 to flash SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Nodata, which was a tar file you would use if you wanted to keep your user data. It took 10 minutes to flash but everything seemed to be a success, it rebooted my phone and everything seemed to be working fine. After about 20 minutes of my phone being plugged back into a charger and i was halfway through with downloading an app from the android market where out of nowhere my phone temporarily froze and then rebooted, to where it will show the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then just goes to a black screen. Now even with the USB jig, it will still power on by itself as soon as a place in the battery, go directly to download mode, but then go to a black screen within 3-4 seconds before i can do anything.
Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? At first i thought it might be a stuck power button, but when I was able to flash through download mode with the USB jig that first time it makes me think it is bricked. Any help or insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

How long did you let it set on the black screen because it takes a while to boot up the first time after flashing a ROM.

Well i just placed the battery back in, it started on it's own without my pressing anything again, and i've been timing the last 5 minutes. but it seems like it will stay a black screen indefinitely. unless i remove the back of the phone, or snap it back into place, or any kind of micro impact movements it seems, when I do that it vibrates like it's first being turned on, and shows the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then it will go black again.
See if your adb on your computer can recognize the phone while it's stuck on the black screen. You might be able to push a Rom or recovery over using that.

You may want to just start fresh and lose your data with a different stock file. That kinda happened to me before on the gs2 and I found better results with a 100% fresh start. The no data always left me with a hangup or two after getting the phone to boot.

After the first odin flash i was thinking the same thing. But that's the thing, it won't stay on the download mode screen long enough for me to even try to flash anything else through odin. I'm also noticing when connected to the charger, if i make a slight impact against the phone with my palm, the screen will briefly show the battery icon as if the phone is charging when it is turned off, then the screen will go black again. When it is unplugged, is when it will show the samsung screen, then the samsung galaxy s3 screen, then go black again.
That's weird...sounds like something is loose. Any kind of recent impact damage to the phone? Dropping it, throwing it at your cat, anything like that?
To me it sounds like maybe your power button is stuck "down"
If you didn't know, the power button has a fail safe reboot that happens after holding for about 10 seconds. So no matter what, if you phone is frozen or whatever, holding power more than 10s will cause it to reboot. That would also explain why its turning itself on as soon as you pop in the battery.

not recently, and if it was ever dropped, it would be in it's case... But i had noticed that while it was in it's power glove case, sometimes i would have to use more than normal pressure on the power button to get the phone to respond. I was wondering if something was stuck, just haven't read anything like that happening to anyone, and when I used the jig the first time the screen stayed on.

Note 8 DEATH

Dear friends, I've been using note 8 GT-N5110 wifi version since 1 and a half month and never had such problem.
Today, I get to saw a sudden black screen with some green and red letters saying something about SDcard, don't really remember. Then it went off to never come back. No booting animation, no Samsung logo, no charging animation, no recovery mode, no download mode, no even a light on the screen, no nothing.
Would they take the warranty for this? Is there any anything left to do by myself? My note is (was) rooted and currently using Civatos ROM. Any info needed, please ask for it. Heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!!!!!!1

Bittorrent and torrent search. They seem harmless.
Ive never heard of an app have the capability of causing such things, malicious or not. Did you flash something that you shouldn't have? What you are describing sounds more like a bad flash more than a rogue app. Otherwise I would be more inclined to think that you have a hardware problem. If you havent already, remove your sd card if you have one, and hold the power button for a minimum of 20 seconds and see if it turns on. If not, try charging your note for 24 hours even if it doesn't display charging information. Then try turning it on normally. If not, hold the power for 20 seconds. After that, I would say that you would need to contact Samsung for warranty repair or exchange.

You said, it said something about the sdcard. It's maybe a hardware or flash memory malfunction. Maybe it was talking about the internal sd. Did you try removing your sd? If that doesn't work you should just take it to Samsung because it might be a flash memory error.

[Q] Samsung Ace II will not turn on

Hello, new here and I know nothing about rooting nor have I rooted my phone but after looking all over the net I have come here in hopes of finding some tech wizards that can help me.
The Problem:
Turned phone off and a few hours later I tried turning it back on but it only shows the screen with model number and Samsung under it. It shows for a few seconds then the screen goes black and keeps looping like this. I have not rooted or anything. Not dropped in water ( water square is pink though). Phone shows no water damage or corrosion after opening.
What have I done?
I tried booting in recovery and download mode but i have never done it before and I was not successful at getting any other screen besides the model number Samsung screen.
I have tried a different battery after spending some time at the mall (no on carries it any more as it is no longer made) different battery did nothing. Repair guys suggested it may be the button sticking and said hey could clean it for $25. Instead I went home searched the web and disassembled my phone. I cleaned the button areas on the inside of the case and the contact on the inside attached to the circuit board. I have reassembled and it still does the same thing.
After more research I found a video saying to actually remove the internal button from the circuit board to stop the loop (which will leave me with no power button) I have not tried this as I am not that bold (yet).
I am wondering if it is a software problem that can be fixed by using Odin and installing the stock firmware but I just have not found a proper guide that makes enough sense for me to actually try. I don't want to waste my time with something I have never done and make things worse.
I have downloaded Odin and firmware from sammobile but that is about as far as I can go without some hand holding....
Thanks for reading my story any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried this many times and tried again after reading your reply. This should work fairly fast from what I understand right?
My phone is a virgin mobile phone (Canada) is it possible they have locked out recovery / download modes?
When I try to start in recovery nothing happens at all. Screen does not light, phone does not vibrate. Again I have never tried this until now so I don't know if the phone ever booted into these special modes when it was working.

It's weird. I found something on page hard-reset.com. I cannot post link here now. I put "samsung ace2 recovery" into google and it was on first page. It's hard reset key combination. Try it.
When you plug the phone into the charger, do you get the battery charging status screen?

[Q] Black Screen... PLEASE Help!

If This has Already been Posted I'm Sorry, I couldn't Find anything that fit..
I have a Samsung Note 2 Unlocked on 4.1.2 stock. I have a recovery on it..
This is what is going on and I Really Could USE Some HELP..
I tried to download an App last week but it wouldn't download. Then Friday the App just started downloading. It was just a simple Pic App. Friday Night, My phone died, so I charged it about an hour or so and Tried to turn it on. When it comes up with the Samsung screen then All of a Sudden the word Samsung starts jumping up and down and gets lines through it. The phone boots on up but the screen Stay Black. The lights come on where the buttons are and it makes the sounds from my text messages and things like that.. It also makes the sound and vib when I Unlock the screen but Still can't see Anything.. I can put it into Download Mode and see the Screen Fine but when trying Recovery Mode or Anything like that then the screen goes back to moving with lines and looks like static y.
What can I do??
I've went through all the files on my phone and SD card though my computer and Removed that APP but it Still didn't help... I'm Not Sure but I was thinking I could use the Factory Image to redo it but I'm not sure how to go about it. Also Will I have to re unlock my phone and I would like to upgrade so do I Need to 1st put what was on my phone then upgrade from there or just use the new one??
THANK YOU for Any and All the Help..
I have now Tried to re load the Stock Software 4.1.2. It was Successful and after it rebooted then it did the same thing with the Samsung Note screen. Then it showed some lines and lights kind of like it was going to come up but Never did, Just went back to the BLACK Screen... PLEASE SOMEONE HELP! Is there a way to Wipe Clean and Start Fresh by using the Computer..
Thanks for Any Help...
All I can think of is use Odin to flash the latest factory Rom, and see if that fixes it.
