A lot of units with this problem, and.. lag?
LG send a message informing that the light leakages are caused by a software problem. So with the next update, they will fix it.
Can light leakages be a software bug?

If they in fact did say this and I am still not sure where the person stating this is getting his information, it will not in fact be a fix.
As I said in another thread after returning multiple units for this issue and now having one that doesn't have it, it is part of the hardware design of the LCD.
What LG will probably do in the next update is raise the 0 brightness level to the current 20-25% level.....Voila no more problem.
I suspect the LCD at 0 brightness was going so dim as to show the individual backlights at their origin.
NOw can they fix my blue line in software?

LG sure fix the problem of lights leakages raising the brightness, but the blue line... I don't know.
On the text I read says that the driver which control brightness of led screen are "maladjusted" and with the next update (Android 4.4) it will be fixed.
Well, 3 days ago in Spain we have an update (V500-10b) and I believe that the light leakages have disappeared, the % of brighness I think is the same than before the update.. and that's all.
We are waiting for 4.4
10b update fixed bottom backlight bleed in my unit.
Blue line and speakers are not fixed. Is reported that after update to Korean 10c blue line problem is not fixed

Dam. I replaced 3 perfectly good defective units one of which had no blue line or any other light bleed. Get one with no lower 7 light issue but had blue light. Can't exchange or return it nor send it in for repair add I am in Canada.
Oh well. It is a small issue I guess

Hi,
I've downloaded the Widget "Xperia Arc Flashlight" so I can use the Xperia Play photolight on the backside as a very bright flashlight.
But: The LED does light constantly with some kind of visible short pulse... like a slight flicker or interruption. Is this normal?
Could you check if your phones behave like this, too? It's slightly visible but it IS visible and I want to know if there's s.th. wrong.
Thanks

Sometimes happens to to me when I'm overusing it,but after a few minutes it goes normal
Oha... thanks for your reply.
The Xperia Play is new and about 20min "old" ;-)
defective or not!?
Just as system02 said. It must be that kind of thing like the gap from the slider, although it shouldn't do like that.
Every single phone that has an LED flash does the same thing when used as a flashlight. It's completely normal.
It's not normal because:
- my 1st Play didn't have this issue
- my Arc didn't have this issue
- my Blackberry 9700 doesn't have this issue
I've updatet the software on my new Xperia Play and I thought it could have s.th. to do with the update...!?

None of my phones in the past flickered at all, my Play does it all the time, I think its a design issue somewhere.
mine used to do that but I used toggle auto brightness app from the market and it no longer does it.
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk
My old Legend used to blink it's LED from time to time, but no where near as noticeable as the Play's LED. Not exactly an issue for me though.
mine flickers when using video camera with lights on and when using Power Control Plus to turn on Flashlight. Nevertheless, it's very useful when the power goes out especially now it's kinda stormy here..
looking at the frequency of the issue, i think it's very normal..
PS, mine's bought in Hong Kong then flashed to UK, same issue eversince..
Not sure if they're linked but mine's been fine since i disabled the auto light sensor but before i disabled it, the led did flicker quite badly

Mine does the exact same thing, when using video recorder in the dark its like ive hit the strobe light button.. its ok for about 4-5secs then its like ive walked into cream in ibiza, it goes nuts.. ive had lots of xperia phones,, x10i x10 mini, x10 mini pro, etc none had the issue, i had it on the original firmware and now i have it on the 2.3.4 rom posted on this forum..
Its a strange one and kinda annoying
Sorry to bring this thread back, but the pulsating/flicker, I've seen on 3 Play's, from 2.3.2 - 2.3.3 - 2.3.4.
All 3 did it on all 3 software updates.
Uk phones, with the 2.3.2/2.3.3 uk updates, and then the Nordic update.
It's pulsating/flickering 50 times a minute, so 50hz(is that right?), increasing it's rate would effectively make it palatable to the human eye, and also remove the refresh lines you get from bright or close up subjects when using the flash as a light, seen on the recording screen, and on the actual recording...looking like old monitor refresh rates as seen through a camera with the travelling black lines.
Sony Ericsson support were useless when I mentioned it to them, stating if it was a fault, it would be fixed.
Is there any way to report this as a fault, or to fix it, or am I stuck with Customer Service Support Agents(call centre staff, basically.).
Is there any way or even a strobe app, that allows control of the light.
I know there's one on the windows phone that has a control for this issue.
LED Flashlight it's called, and the update fixes "Increased refresh rate to fix LED flickering on some phones."
Hi, I've the same problem. I also noticed that Led flick only when phone has mobile network turned on. When is on airplane mode it's normal.
Can someone else confirm? Maybe this problem can be solved with a baseband update.
EDIT: I found that this problem disappear when phone run in 3g, so it's about gsm.
Strange.. when I first bought the phone.. turned the LED on, it flickers..
Then today, after a week+ I tested it again and it's ok...
However, my earpiece speaker has blown up and cracking.. I've done some research and it seemed that there are so many users which have similar issues (either with the LED, the earpiece, etc) - It's sad to say that some xplay builds are defective from the start - could be from the hardware batch.

Can you repeat the test in 2g?
Btw I checked the call quality: in 3g I heard nothing in background, in 2g I heard a intermittent buzzing.
Maybe in 2g that isn't a problem in the sense that it's common in every phone that make a 2g call, or it may be a radio problem that can be related to led issue..
I think that tomorrow I'll try to call someone at sony ericsson.
I did the test and it is true, in flight mode the light dont flik. Now i want to know what is the base band of you that have the same issue.
Thanks.
Mine did that on AT&T's 2.3.3, Now on DarkForest ICS with Darkforest Kernel, doesnt do it.
Mine always flickers, using two different flashlight apps.

Thank you,
Hi all.
I'm reading a lot about 'screen flicker'. But it seems people are using this to describe a few different faults.
I've noticed that my one x backlight flickers when in auto brightness mode. But it only does it under artificial light. Under natural light it's totally fine.
If I turn off Auto brightness, it is completely fine also, regardless of what level I set the brightness to.
It's almost as if the software isn't filtering the auto brightness sensor output enough and trying to respond instantaneously to even the slightest light change, giving the impression of a flicker.
Who else has this issue specifically?
It looks to me like a software issue, but I only have 3 days left in my return for refund peiod and I'm not sure what the best option is.
Cheers.
EDIT: On to my 10th handset now with the same issue and just about ready to give up, but have noticed that the flicker seems to be worse when the CPU is coming on and off heavy load.
Can someone with Root and SETCPU installed please try different governers to see if they make any difference to this issue? I don't wan to root this phone to try it myself as I may end up returning it. Thanks!

Oh well return it, and buy a new one thats probably the best option, i ordered mine yesterday, and ill do the same in 2 weeks if it have issues
Yeah I'm thinking that might be the best option. It's just that it seems to be a Software issue to me.
Anyone upgraded to 1.28 and seen this specific problem (not the screen jumping and flickering pixels) go away?

I've upgraded to 1.28 and still have the flickering problem. I would love to be able to believe its software and its going to get fixed with an OTA, but at the moment everyone is simply uncertain as to what the future holds.
HTC advices anyone with a flickering screen to go to your carrier and ask for a replacement

On to my 10th handset with auto-brightness flicker now. At what point should i jsut give up? lol
It seems to be somehow related to CPU load also as I'm noticing the flicker is far worse when the cpu is changing power states.
Can someone with root try a different governer for the CPU and see if that changes the flicker at all?
BUMP. I'd be really great if someone rooted could test this theory!
..
I really cant help but ill tell my experience with my onex for the past two or three weeks.
I had the flickering screen twice,
1. random on the notification bar.
2. I was taking photos and got the CPU loaded because I was shooting too many pics. the bottom side of the screen was flickering.
anyway, I notice that the flickering only happend when the auto screen rotate is enabled.
Thanks for the reply, but I think you're talking about a different flicker. I'm talking about the back-light flicker when Auto Brightness is enabled. Not the LCD panel flicker.
Hey guys,
I bought a HOX with a broken touchscreen. I changed the whole display unit and that is fine now, but I had flickering backlight before and after changing the display unit.
I noticed this was a common error earlier, but I don't know if it still is? Is there any fix to it? I read that it was fixed back in october or so and my version is:
4.1.1
software number 3.14.207.27
sdk api 4.63
kernel 3.1.10-g946d78d
[email protected] #1
Can I fix it by flashing another kernel /ROM?
This is what I see:
I can't change display brightness. It doesn't matter whether I do "automatic", lowest or highest, nothing changes.
When It is charging: No or only light flickering
When it is not charging: If I do nothing at all, there is no flickering. as soon as I touch the screen or it has to process something, I have a light increase/decrease in brightness.
The backlight is NOT dead. It is only pretty low. I can still see if the room is dark and even when there is light shining in the room.
I am just bothered by not being able to adjust brightness and the flickering when not charging..
I have done a factory reset via bootmanager but it still is the same.
But I REALY like this phone so I'd realy love to keep it.
Any help?
I have no problems with flashing as I have flashed previous mobiles, but I would like to know whether there is a ROM/kernel that will fix this.
for example when I have the analog clock on the screen and it starts ticking forward each second, as soon as it starts moving, the screen goes darker a tiny bit.
I hace the same problemas. Did you fixed this issue?
Dont bother yourself with it, its not a problem, its very common, all one x's i handled had the same "issue", my current one also has it, just ignore it or put brightness around 50%, much less noticable
It has to do with tegra 3.

I recently experienced really bad image retention issue with my LG G4 (and my wife's V10 but that is for another forum). It was so bad that even if I use any of those burn in fixer apps it just keeps coming back. It would go away when you turn it off but come right back within 5 minutes of using the phone.
In any case, I had it replaced for free since it is still under warranty. I'm worried now that it may eventually come back again because it seems to be common to the G4 (and the Quantum IPS screen phones)
My question is:
1. Has anyone else experienced image retention? Is it a common G4 issue? How can I avoid it?
2. For those that has experienced it and had their LCD replaced, did the issue ever come back?
Thanks!

Hi, i have the same problem but i found a very easy solution. All you have to do is install sfilter(or any other blue light filter, and no retention anymore, even if u keep it as low as 20 or 30%. I did the same, i keep my filter at 20% and no ghosting what so ever no matter how bright the screen is. And the second i turn it off, all hell breaks loose. I have an lg g4, but i am sure it will work on any ips display. Hope it helps ?

Hello, I am new here. I have same problem with the display on my LG G4 H818.
1. First instal from Gplay: " Galaxy Nexus Screen Diagnostic " . Now Test your screen with "repair custom" option. If leave 5 minutes on this screen test, images retention will disappear. This is first good sign.
2. Instal from Gplay: " Blue Light Filter ", for recognizing, icon is a 1/4 yellow moon ?in blue circle. Developer is Leap Fitness. This is my try. You can test another blue light filter and test.
3. Go to activate blue light filter from button, and set:
-Color temp to 3200k;
-intensity to 10, is enough and it works fine for me;
-screen Dim to 9%.
4. Optional, for better color contrast: Go in phone settings/ general tab/ accessibility/ vision / screen color adjustment / actiaye from button and move the cursor down a half centimeter. For me is enough this setup.
Hope this is helpful for all. Thanks
Bought a LG G8S today but have an issue with the always on display there's a faint Grey background that is only on the half of the screen to put it simple the from the top to half of the screen background is not fully black.

That's definitely weird, I don't have that issue, but in any case I dont even use aod, i just have it set to display alerts. Aod to me was always a battery drainer.
But that looks like it could possibly be a screen burn, can't say for sure though.
Try searching for a completely black picture online (google or something) and look if it behaves the same when you put that picture in fullscreen
if yes it's an issue with your screen (which is highly possible, it doesn't look like something software-side-y to me)
LG G8S here in UK.
MASSIVE screen burn.
Literally half the screen has gone a VERY dark green.
Any way to fix this?
thanks

Me too
I have the same problem, but isn't hardware problem, if you put a black image doesn't appear that, I'm sure that is a software problem. Already I contact LG support but they just told me go to the store where you buy it for warranty

I have it too but it's only visible at night in very low light. I suspect it's software related since activating the AOD during the day works as it should.
I'm facing the same issue. I think it's most probably a software or hardware issue which is involving the ambient light sensor. For me, it doesn't occur only while using the AOD feature when the phone is placed within a dark enviroment. It also occurs on the superior half of the screen for a period of one second or so if I cover and then uncover the ambient light sensor or when I use the Brief notifications feature. It is only noticeable in low light conditions.
Also, I have contacted LG Support but unfortunately they were not able to provide any solution.

I think it's a software issue. It's very unlikely to be hardware since we have different hardware by different factories. I have the "Brief Notifications" - "Bubble notifications" feature activated and when a notification comes in it also happens but only in low light environments.
I am also on Android 10 - build V20a

I see. If it really is a software issue, then it must be a persistent one. I am currently on Android 9 V10r and had this issue from the very beginning. It isn't that annoying but I hope LG will provide a solution.

I can assure that it is not an a software issue because when I went back to the store to show the problem they replaced my phone right away but I asked the manager to let me compare both phone screens and they confirmed that it is a display defect. Also I gave up on the phone completely since the replacement unit had a defect on the WIFI\SIM module.

I understand. Thank you.
I have noticed this problem too today. AOD is grey, it was fine on A9. Hope LG will fix this (..but i doubdt ).
Generally, an AOD is a bad idea for an OLED screen because of its burn-in effect. Active pixels age while others do not or only slowly. Further, some sub-pixels age faster than others, e.g. the blue ones faster than the green ones. Manufacturers spent a lot of time, money and effort to conceal this effect ... because they failed to really avoid it. In fact, sub-pixels, that are not as worn out as others, are artificially aged to get a uniform degradation of the screen.
The phenomenon you described might be a side effect of this „uniform OLED screen degradation technology” (euphemism?).
As a conclusion one could say that some decent LCD is still a good idea, especially Motorola's method to show time and notifications for some seconds whenever you lift your phone from the table or similar.
