[Q] Make primary power source charging cable?

I was wondering if it was possible to have the primary source of power be the USB port versus the battery. I tend to leave my devices plugged in a lot more than I probably should and figured if I could do this it would save on messing up my batteries. It's kind of like having a laptop plugged in without a battery (if you don't really take it out).

Doesn't really help, but if you charge your battery to 100%. you can pull it out as it runs on the usb port from then on. Only worked a few times for me

ive had this happen alot, make sure its plugged in for 10 min but eventually it turns off

No need, the phone will turn off charging when the battery gets full.

That's not what I was trying to get at. I was trying to avoid using the battery versus continual draining/charging it. I tend to use it as my hotspot at home for my primary internet connection and sometimes music.
My thought process was if I didn't constantly use the battery I'd keep phone temperature low and not mess up the battery.

Have you ruined batteries in the past by charging them/depleting them? Honestly, I have mine on and off the charger constantly. Today I used my phone to listen to Pandora most of the day and about half way through the day I video chatted with a friend and had it on the charger. I took it off the charger, ran around a little bit away from my house and then came back and it currently sits on the charger again.
From my experience with it, I've never had any issues with keeping it on/off the charger periodically through the day. I am also using a 3500mAh extended battery, but I did the same thing on the stock one.
I understand you are trying to keep temperatures low and play on the safe side, but unless you are noticing unusually high temperatures or something, I wouldn't worry about it being on and off the charger.

Yeah, if you're worried about the battery crapping out, I wouldn't. I've had mine on charger every night or every other night, and it's still like new.
Heck, even if it did die on you, you can get a brand new OEM battery on eBay for less than $6 shipped.

Quick tip on battery. If you go online and sprint chat with a representative, just tell him or her your battery life is no good on your phone. Then he or she will tell you go to buy one then get back on chat and sprint will credit your account. I bought $60 battery extended with case and got credited $60 on my bill
Plus now I can charge one night and last two days!

[Q] Battery draining faster than it can charge!

I've been using this ROM for a while but recently noticed a problem with the battery. Starting last week I noticed that even though my sync is set to every hour, I would constantly see the sync icon flashing and that data polling was killing a fully charged battery in about an hour.
Then I noticed that my standard Sprint USB-to-wall charger wasn't working correctly. The battery was being depleted faster than it could recharge! The same thing happened when I used the USB cable to charge from my computer. Fortunately someone at work had a "ChargePod" that is really powerful and my phone was able to re-charge.
So the other day I wiped and re-flashed the ROM. Still had the same problem.
Yesterday I replaced the battery with a brand new HTC-OEM battery. Still have the same problem.
Since the battery has been replaced, I'm ruling that out as the cause. Can anyone suggest anything else?

Perhaps you have a bad download? When you reflashed did you use the same download that you used the first time? You said that the rom had been running fine, but it's worth a shot. Usually the constant syncing is caused by a missing app that would normally sync with everything else, like if you removed one part of Friend Stream. Gmail has also been an issue for some people in relation to syncing.
If you restored your apps or data, whatever was causing the issue to begin with could have triggered it again upon restore. It could also be hardware related.
Did you happen to wipe battery stats without a full charge and proper calibration? Either way, try recalibrating your battery.
It could be any number of things, I think you're just going to have to do some testing.

Battery depleting
Could be a faulty usb cord, if it got crimped. Don't think its the charger since the phone will not charger from charger or computer. Goto Sprint store and try one of their usb cords.

A little more info on this...
So I discovered that a friend's CallPod Chargepod will charge the phone. These things are strong - putting out something like 940mA (?) per connected device.
A usb-computer-charge is ~100mA and I don't know what my HTC (oem) wall chargers put out but I'm guessing maybe in the 500mA range?
So, at some point in the almost 2 years I've owned the phone it has decided to only accept high-power chargers! I'd really like to figure it out but now that Motorola sells 1A chargers for ~$5 on Amazon I can just upgrade if needed.

Computer usb normally charges at about 500ma, not 100ma. And the stock HTC charger charges at 1000ma.
As stated above, it could be a bad usb cable, or a loose usb port on the phone. Try flashing a different rom just to rule that out.

I'd say download battery calibration from the market.make sure your fully charged and go from there.or you could fully charge Boot into recovery and wipe battery stats, then allow your phone to die all the way to 0%.followed by recharging without any interruption.

Phone charging really slow??

So my s2 has been charging really slow, like today it took like 5 hours to fully charge, and when connected to charger if I'm using it it wont charge very well, like the battery will stay at lets say 20% when im using it and charging it, it might even go down more. it used to charge pretty well even if I was on it. Cuz this be the charger, or is my battery messed up?? Im using the charger that came with the phone.

Are you charging through a usb port on your computer or ac? If it is with usb port then yes it will charge at a much slower rate. Also if you have a lot of apps running or backround data going it will also cause your charging to slow down some. I would say through usb without any apps open and backround data stopped It would take a few hours to charge say from 20%. Through AC in the same condition probly 1.5 hours. Try to reboot your phone and then plug it in to charge to see if that doesnt speed it up any. If it does then you know you have backround data moving at a fast rate and that would be your reason to slow the charge down.

You could try calibrating the battery, maybe. To do that, turn the phone off. Charge to full (make sure it's full, by taking it off of the charger and putting it back on...the indicator should read 100% almost immediately when reattached to power).
When the battery is full, with the phone still turned off, remove the battery for about 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, reinsert battery and restart phone.
Battery will be calibrated. This may not resolve the problem of a slow charge, but will clear 'battery memory' which may have been preventing it from charging completely (and, I suspect, may have inhibited charging).

I was using an aftermarket wall charger and had similar results. Switched to the USB/AC converter that came with the phone and all was well.

Yes, try Battery Calibration from the market. Only works on rooted devices, and follow instructions.

Actually, one doesn't need an app to calibrate the battery. If you follow the instructions above, the app is unnecessary. And the phone mustn't be rooted

Hey elflip88, have you found the issue yet?
I have the same problem on my HTC Amaze 4G. It's charging 1% every 3 minutes (adds up to 5 hours)
I'm also using the wall charger...oh damn, I'm starting to think I have a faulty device / battery...

For the record Samsung devices are known to be slow at charging so with that considered.... You still shouldn't be at 5 hrs. I would find a battery stats app charge your battery over night and check the chart to see exactly how long it takes to go from 0 - 100. Make sure your batter status is good. Also check the voltage coming into your phone from your charger. There are plenty of battery stat apps in the market that will do this sort of thing. Of course make sure your battery doesn't have water damage of course too lol.

I've had the same problem with mine. But, I can get 1.5 days without charging and moderate usage. Charge it up, drain it, charge it back up then wipe your battery stats in recovery.

This may help if you're using an aftermarket wall charger
If you guys are having issues with slow charging using an aftermarket wall charger, it could be that the phone is charging in a USB state rather than an AC charging state. QuickCharge could alleviate your issues. The cable is inserted between the wall charger and the USB cable that goes to your phone. You can find the product on Amazon. It's the 2nd of 3rd item from the top when you search 'QuickCharge'.

I find that when I fully drain my battery and charge it, it's really slow. Once the phone has enough battery to stay on, I unplugged it and replugged it and it charges normal again.

It's your wifi and your apps using wifi. Turn wifi off while charging. I used to charge 4 hours + on my S2. Reduced to 2 and some change when I turn off wifi.
Also, I struggle to make it through a working day with wifi on. Turn wifi off and I can do 4 days no problem.

I've had the same problems using an aftermarket wall charger.

I old suggest using a different outlet if you haven't done that yet.

i had that issue once, it had to do with my ROM i imagne... i flashed a new one and i havent had a problem ever since.

[Q] Charging issues - CM10.1

I currently have the CM10.1-M3 build from 4/17/13 installed.
For a long while, I have been having major issues charging my Captivate Glide.
My original battery died. It was bloated. I called AT+T and they sent me a replacement. I also bought two high capacity batteries.
If I leave the phone charging about half the time little or no progress is made charging. Lat night I charged the phone for over 8 hours and the charge went from 10% to 14%.
Other times I will wake up after charging it all night and it will say fully charged, but then the instant it is unplugged from the charger, it will drop down from 100% to 20% or less.
Then once every 3 or 4 days it will actually fully charge. But even in that case the charging is slow at best.
I did a full wipe and re-flashed last night and nothing changed. I have tried charging in airplane mode, but that seems to make it worse. I have had a little tiny bit of success turning mobile data off, but otherwise I have tried everything I could think of with no luck.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues, or have any suggestions? Is this a case where I might need to replace the phone entirely?

I did notice a lot longer charge time when hooked up to USB on computer, on my car charger and hooked up to AC I seem to get a lot quicker charge...
What charger are you using?

I have tried a few different chargers. I mostly use a 2.1amp wall charger. I also have a 1 amp wall charger, and a 1 amp car charger. I have tried about 3 different car chargers.
I am really suspicious that the micro-usb port on the phone went bad and that I will need to get the phone replaced.

Charging with AC is gonna be alot faster then with DC. But as far as it being the rom I don't see tthat.. sounds like possibly a loose wire or bad connection when u lay ur phone down

When I charge my Captivate Glide with phone powered up plugged in to the wall, using the supplied wall charger, I've noticed that the battery seems to drain quicker. This is with the original battery, I will be getting an extended battery for my phone. If I power the phone down then charge it in to the wall it charges quickly and seems to take longer draining. This does not happen when charging with the PC.

Bloated battery could just be bad - but it could also be due to overcharging. That's not going to happen unless there is a serious problem with your phone, or possibly a problem with the contacts leading to an incorrect voltage reading. This also may explain your problems charging and sudden jumps in charge %.
Clean your contacts well on the battery side and phone side with a pencil eraser, rubbing alcohol, etc.
I notice a big difference with whatever kernel is shipping with the current M3 cm10.1 build between a 500ma charger and 2amp charger, so I imagine the kernel is set for a 750ma or 1amp charge.

[Q] Battery not fully charging problem

I have a battery / charging problem on my Gnex. The problem is that the battery won’t charge more then 60 %, drains quick and then the phone shuts down at 0 % ( in about 2-3hrs of use) and wont restart until recharged.
At first, I tought it was the battery so I bought one OEM on ebay. It did the same thing so I returned it and went to Telus store to buy an OEM.
Same thing happened with the new OEM. I then bought an external wall battery charger and charged the 2 batteries I have. When I put the first one back in the phone it said 12%?
I tried the second one which is the new OEM and same thing, its showing 12%.
I did a little test, I had 4.2.2 so I unlocked the phone and rooted (no more warranty anyway) I flashed back the ROM to ICS. No change.
So what I did next is I used the phone until it shut down at 0% and restarted it on the bootloader screen and left it on, on the bootlooader screen.
Well the phone screen stayed on for more then 3 hours, so I know the battery is good because there is no way that a 0% battery could power the screen for 3 hours.
So after it shut down from the bootloader screen, I charged it again, in the phone, and it went right back to 60%, I did try to wipe batt stats from recovery mode and battery calibration apps but no luck.
Is there a way to disable the auto shut down on the phone? The battery meter if definitely showing wrong charge stats. Is the battery controller part of the USB board or the motherboard?
The only thing I did not try yet is a custom ROM and Kernel.
Any ideas?

Sounds like a hardware failure... It's obviously not the batteries

I found where the Power Management with Switch Mode Charger chip is, on the motherboard! I wonder if there is some ways to access and modify the values of this.

For what it's worth, the same thing is happening to me. Charges to 64%, and it acts like it's only got a 64% charge - runs out fast. And I also tried a replacement OEM battery with no difference. I'm not completely convinced this is a hardware problem - though I guess it could be. I'm still stock Gnex (with the 4.3 upgrade - and come to think of it, this started some time after that upgrade). I was hoping it was some kind of kernel problem that i could fix by switching to CM. Anybody have any luck with that?

The same thing is happening to my phone, although I'm lucky enough to have it charge to 73%. Only realized the problem when I bought a new OEM battery and it stopped charging at the same 73%. I have a friend who has the exact same phone and will give her both my batteries to charge and see the results (with her phone then once batteries are reinstalled in my phone).
Outside of replacing the motherboard, would anyone know if there could possibly be a software fix? Has this happened to any other phone? If so does anyone know the results?

My gt s6312 has charging issue. It never charge over 67-69% in my phone. I checked the battery in other phone its ok.....please help.....

Sounds like a hardware failure in the phones' charging circuit. Since:
- no software change (ROM or Kernel) fixes it
- no battery change fixes it
Then it's obviously the charging circuit in the phone. Time to get a new phone!

Well I've confirmed for myself that it is my phone charging circuit that's giving me bad info on my battery charge. I installed both my batteries in a friends Gnex and both gave me 100% charge reading on my friends phone. I then re-installed both batteries in my phone and both came back with identical 13% charge reading. So to me this is obviously not a battery issue.
Since my previous post in July my phone has gotten progressively worst. So I have now come to the point where I either have to replace the phone's charging circuit or replace the phone all together. I would much rather do the first as any replacement phone via my carrier would require me to pay more monthly on my contract.
So would anyone know with certainty where the charging circuit is located in the Gnex? Is it on the main logic board or the USB charging board?
