Phone charging really slow?? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So my s2 has been charging really slow, like today it took like 5 hours to fully charge, and when connected to charger if I'm using it it wont charge very well, like the battery will stay at lets say 20% when im using it and charging it, it might even go down more. it used to charge pretty well even if I was on it. Cuz this be the charger, or is my battery messed up?? Im using the charger that came with the phone.

Are you charging through a usb port on your computer or ac? If it is with usb port then yes it will charge at a much slower rate. Also if you have a lot of apps running or backround data going it will also cause your charging to slow down some. I would say through usb without any apps open and backround data stopped It would take a few hours to charge say from 20%. Through AC in the same condition probly 1.5 hours. Try to reboot your phone and then plug it in to charge to see if that doesnt speed it up any. If it does then you know you have backround data moving at a fast rate and that would be your reason to slow the charge down.

Yeah I'm charging with the wall charger, not thru usb

thats pretty weird...have you tried using another usb cable?? maybe the cable is faulty?

You could try calibrating the battery, maybe. To do that, turn the phone off. Charge to full (make sure it's full, by taking it off of the charger and putting it back on...the indicator should read 100% almost immediately when reattached to power).
When the battery is full, with the phone still turned off, remove the battery for about 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, reinsert battery and restart phone.
Battery will be calibrated. This may not resolve the problem of a slow charge, but will clear 'battery memory' which may have been preventing it from charging completely (and, I suspect, may have inhibited charging).
Good luck!

I was using an aftermarket wall charger and had similar results. Switched to the USB/AC converter that came with the phone and all was well.

Actually, one doesn't need an app to calibrate the battery. If you follow the instructions above, the app is unnecessary. And the phone mustn't be rooted

YODA? ^^^^

Hey elflip88, have you found the issue yet?
I have the same problem on my HTC Amaze 4G. It's charging 1% every 3 minutes (adds up to 5 hours)
I'm also using the wall charger...oh damn, I'm starting to think I have a faulty device / battery...
yelp!

For the record Samsung devices are known to be slow at charging so with that considered.... You still shouldn't be at 5 hrs. I would find a battery stats app charge your battery over night and check the chart to see exactly how long it takes to go from 0 - 100. Make sure your batter status is good. Also check the voltage coming into your phone from your charger. There are plenty of battery stat apps in the market that will do this sort of thing. Of course make sure your battery doesn't have water damage of course too lol.

I've had the same problem with mine. But, I can get 1.5 days without charging and moderate usage. Charge it up, drain it, charge it back up then wipe your battery stats in recovery.

This may help if you're using an aftermarket wall charger
If you guys are having issues with slow charging using an aftermarket wall charger, it could be that the phone is charging in a USB state rather than an AC charging state. QuickCharge could alleviate your issues. The cable is inserted between the wall charger and the USB cable that goes to your phone. You can find the product on Amazon. It's the 2nd of 3rd item from the top when you search 'QuickCharge'.

I find that when I fully drain my battery and charge it, it's really slow. Once the phone has enough battery to stay on, I unplugged it and replugged it and it charges normal again.

It's your wifi and your apps using wifi. Turn wifi off while charging. I used to charge 4 hours + on my S2. Reduced to 2 and some change when I turn off wifi.
Also, I struggle to make it through a working day with wifi on. Turn wifi off and I can do 4 days no problem.

Hi, after three times full cycle charge(one through the socket on the wall and two via usb). I found my galaxy nexus battery could only be charged up to 99%, even there is a "complete" showed on the locked screen.
So do i need to reset my phone xia bootloader or anybody know how to solve that? Many thanks!!!!!!

Have you guys tried to turn off your phone and then let it charge once it is full turn it back on? I noticied that was the only way
I was about to post here to ask about this, as I've noticed it as well. Good to hear it's normal, but I'm curious how it protects the battery.
This is standard charging behaviour and happens on the Nexus S too (which is currently my phone). There were similar questions on the Nexus S general forum about this behaviour too.
It is for increasing battery life. You should not charge it to maximum or discharge it completely. It's a well known fact about Li-Ion batteries...

Thanks mate~ I am new on Android, so just curious about this....
I have this issue too. I have noticed that if I unplug it and plug it back in, it will charge to 100%. I had assumed it was because I was using the Samsung 700ma charger. Guess not.
I have noticed my Galaxy Tab 7 does the same thing, but it will show 100% until I unplug it then it will go down immediately to a lower level, I plug it back in and let charge and it goes to 100%.
I have guessed that what is happening is that once it charges to 100%, it stops charging and starts using battery, thus the decrease. I have not watched it to try to catch it as soon at it done charging to see if this is the case as I always charge overnight.
I would guess that if I let it get low enough, it would start charging again. I know my laptop will not charge the battery unless it is 90% or less to prevent top offs that shorten battery life.

the way you used is exactly what my friend told me to do. He has the same issue, and if he unplug the charger when a 'complete' showed on the locked screen and replug it, you could get a 100%!!
Same problem here but I dont care.
I had this problem. My GN would only charge to 98% so I left it on charge for nearly 8 hours and it eventually got to 100% I carried out a battery calibration using this app from the market and its been perfect ever since I've even noticed an increase in battery life

Your not supposed to do this. Charging to 100% and/or letting it drop to 0% decreases battery life in the long run. This applies to all LI-ION batteries, in your laptop, or anything else.
You people that complain about 96-99% just need to get over it. It's like that for a reason. Don't go chasing mods the charge it to 100%, or ways to trick it into saying 100%, just accept that when it says charged it is.
edit: Sorry if I come off as an 8==D. Just tired of seeing posts like this (the nexus S does the same thing. Its by design for a reason.)
My galaxy nexus charges all the way to 100%. But when i leave it charging overnight, when i wake up its on 97%. I think its a built in safety feature to prevent the phone from charging when left plugged in for an extended period.

Oh good to know this is intentional.

Battery problem went from 80% to 20% in a second

Here is a pic of what happened to me. Lately the phone shuts off whrn it gets ecen remotely hot, i can barely feel it getting hot when it shuts down. After that sometimes it wont reboot because the battery has drained and when I plug it in it shows a battery with a yellow triangle. Another thing is that my phone or battery has killed two different chargers and it seems now the only way to charge my phone is through a usb cable either connected to the wall or to my computer.
So which is it, my phone or my battery that is bad?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
As I recall, if the battery is drained and shows the triangle, it just means it's too "dead" to power on.
Hmm, that's strange. Were they Samsung Chargers or generic ones?
Maybe it's a certain ROM or something you are using?

The first charger was the OEM one that came with the phone. It died within 3 months of usage. The second charger was from an old motorola phone I had, my phone killed it almost instantly.
I was using Calk's latest ICS ROM so I decided to flash GB again using this method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394332
The phone doesn't seem to turn off now but the battery DRAINS while charging.
Something must really be wrong here.
Maybe the batterynis too hot if it is it wont charge pluz there is bug in ics its happen to me b4 that y i went back to l29
That's probably a failing battery. Mine drained while charging. Turnout to be a bad cable. I also had the wall adapter start to do that when it went out. Try a new charger and if that doesn't help it is probably a bad battery.

USB to PC
I would try another cord and/or a different pc if possible.
Also check the battery stats to see if a certain app takes up a lot of battery (it may restart the app as soon as you kill it).
If none of that works I would wipe and re-install the rom or another rom for testing purposes.
And if it occurs on multiple roms/kernals it maybe hardware/battery related.
i believe you shouldn't charge it with a PC usually. i could be wrong though.

Not necessarily - in my experience it depends on how much power your computer's USB ports are capable of providing, and even that can vary depending on what controller is powering what ports and the like. I normally charge my phone from my computer and it takes roughly the same time as using the wall charger, though I've noticed that it doesn't seem to charge as quickly on at least one or two other computers I've had the phone plugged into.
USB usually has 500mA, where as the charger supplied by Samsung has 1000mA. It -will- charge faster with the supplied charger.

That is still sufficient power to run the phone without the battery. So at worse, the battery stays at the same percentage. It's not normal for the battery to drop while the phone is plugged in.

Higher powered USB ports are far and few inbetween. Usually higher end PC's/controllers will accommodate this. Most PC's though only push about 500mA via the USB ports.

once in while my phone will bug out like that, even if you turn it on and off. only way to really fix it is a battery pull.
I have found that if I am doing anything on it (screen on, gaming, Internet, etc.) and connected to my laptop, it often will not have enough power on the subject to compensate for what I am using and will only slow the speed the battery decreases.
That's crazy. Try a factory install. Another possible point of contention, lock frequencies and stop all overclocking. On custom Roms is your clock/governor settings set in the rom OR an app? If you have both set to boot they could be conflicting and constantly switching clock speed and governor settings.
Another thing to do. Charge to 100%. Go into recovery and delete your battery stats
yeah.. that's happened with me while pc usb charging. i was running maps, playing music, and texting at the same time with the screen constantly on. at first it was a slow drain.. then if i turn the screen off it would charge.. just too many things at once. but governor, voltages, schedulers do play a factor.
I don't think you guys realize. I don't have a single app running. At lunch time today I basically had 95% charge on my phone -- and it was connected to my computer.
In about 5 hours the ONLY thing I did was send a few txts. Sent maybe 20 txts in 5 hours. The ENTIRE time my phone was plugged in.
My phone is now at 84% and it's super hot. Opening battery to see what's up? doesn't show anything using any battery juice.
This phone fuking sucks.

I just had the same problem with my brand new stock Galaxy S4.
I bought the new 2amp Genuine Samsung car charger and on the 1st use with my phone turned off it took 3 hours to charge 49 % battery and when i turned the phone on it would say it was charging but the battery was going down.
Faulty cable. Used the car charger with cable provided with phone, all fine. But the Galaxy S4 with auto brightness even with the genuine wall charger if you are playing games it takes ages ti charge and sometimes won't even charge and loose battery.
Just use the genuine charger and try not to use the phone while charging.

[Q] Charging issues - CM10.1

I currently have the CM10.1-M3 build from 4/17/13 installed.
For a long while, I have been having major issues charging my Captivate Glide.
My original battery died. It was bloated. I called AT+T and they sent me a replacement. I also bought two high capacity batteries.
If I leave the phone charging about half the time little or no progress is made charging. Lat night I charged the phone for over 8 hours and the charge went from 10% to 14%.
Other times I will wake up after charging it all night and it will say fully charged, but then the instant it is unplugged from the charger, it will drop down from 100% to 20% or less.
Then once every 3 or 4 days it will actually fully charge. But even in that case the charging is slow at best.
I did a full wipe and re-flashed last night and nothing changed. I have tried charging in airplane mode, but that seems to make it worse. I have had a little tiny bit of success turning mobile data off, but otherwise I have tried everything I could think of with no luck.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues, or have any suggestions? Is this a case where I might need to replace the phone entirely?

I am really suspicious that the micro-usb port on the phone went bad and that I will need to get the phone replaced.

Charging
Hello,
When I charge my Captivate Glide with phone powered up plugged in to the wall, using the supplied wall charger, I've noticed that the battery seems to drain quicker. This is with the original battery, I will be getting an extended battery for my phone. If I power the phone down then charge it in to the wall it charges quickly and seems to take longer draining. This does not happen when charging with the PC.

Bloated battery could just be bad - but it could also be due to overcharging. That's not going to happen unless there is a serious problem with your phone, or possibly a problem with the contacts leading to an incorrect voltage reading. This also may explain your problems charging and sudden jumps in charge %.
Clean your contacts well on the battery side and phone side with a pencil eraser, rubbing alcohol, etc.
I notice a big difference with whatever kernel is shipping with the current M3 cm10.1 build between a 500ma charger and 2amp charger, so I imagine the kernel is set for a 750ma or 1amp charge.

Battery Problem?

One night my phone was dying so plugged the charger up at 1% but even with the charger in it went to 0 then cut off. no "powering down" pop up like normal so i went to bed and let it charge. when i woke the next day after about 8 hours it was on 76%! normally it would have been fully charged. its not recommended using other chargers it sounds like you are not getting enough juice from that charger/wire..... but if you are make sure your battery never dies because the more it dies the more strain you are putting on that battery also you will be better off using the usb wire and a computer to charge are you familiar with FAST CHARGE ??? i would suggest getting another charger
Edit: i have a nexus 7 and i had your problem before i have an after market 10 foot usb wire to charge my phone but when you are using it or there is an app that is draining it it will not charge because there is not enough power coming from the wire but if i use my factory charger for the nexus all is good on low battery and it charges so yeah ... just an fyi
also ive noticed that with some kernels that the battery charges faster
but just play around with different roms or just get a new stock charger
If u are using AOCP with stock kernel, idk why but it has ridiculous slow charge. Install a different kernel and you should be fine
