[Q] Questions from possible future Note2 owner - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks!
Been a long user of Xperia Arc S (2011, official updates never got past crappy 4.0.4), now it is time to upgrade. I was looking at something in medium price range, Note 2 caught my eye. The Development section appears to have great activity as well, so guess this phone does sure have some after-market worthness. Still I thought to ask you, how happy are you with your devices.
First, if I am actually going to buy this phone, is there any difference between the colors? Do the materials differ? Is the grey one also more fingerprint and dirt prone than the white one?
How powerful are the CPU and GPU on the phone? Can these take some stress or are they under continuous pressure by the firmware? By that I mean, how well is the firmware optimized? How many user apps can the phone run in addition to system apps before I should start rooting and throwing out some unnecessary crap? Or should I directly move to a custom ROM (might want to explain regarding the counters and official firmware issues)?
Looking in the General section, I see the Android 4.3 update has brought many negative emotions to the forum due to missing features and worse user experience. As I checked from my operator, the phone is sold with 4.1.2 on it. Is it worth to upgrade to 4.3 (I wonder if the update has any major positive sides as well)?
I have played around a lot with ROMs and kernels and basebands and stuff on Xperia models, but I am completely new to the Samsung world of smartphones, thereby any kind of feedback (I won't mind critism either ) is certainly welcome.
That's it for now, I will shoot more questions once I get some!

Hi and welcome,
I love my Note II and had it since Feb 13. It is still fast and does everything. I even love the 4.3 update ,though I'm not on stock, bu on Criskelo ROM, it is much more fluid than 4.1.2 and I consider 4.3 a great update. If you look at the forums you will find a lot of poeple have problems with 4.3, but IMHO, much more don't have any problems. There is a topic on "report bugs" for 4.3 and voting and more people say it's stable than that they have problems. From my experience, since Criskelo is almost stock with Note 3 pack and couple of tweaks that you really should have on any rom (and can install manualy) - the battery is the same as on 4.1.2 and the ROM feels more fluid. I don't see why STOCK one wouldn't feel faster too.
There is some bloat, but that is easily removed, by freezing in Titanium backup, but most of the apps Samsung packs in TW ROMs are useful, IMHO. All sw for S-Pen, multiwindow, Find my phone service (really useful!!), etc. If you have Samsung TV - even more useful software So I froze just a couple of apps that I really don't need.
So I'd suggest you flash EITHER pre-rooted de-KNOXed stock, or some custom ROM. I read that DM and Phoenix are great too, but I am so much satisfied with Criskelo that I have doubts I'll be moving anywhere (well, maybe just for a test spin, but after a BACKUP)
So - 1) root, 2) flash custom recovery 3) backup whole ROM to SD card 4) erase+factory reset, 5) flash MJ5 bootloader (KNOX free), and then pick a ROM to flash. They mostly have AROMA installer so are flashed from recovery (custom ROMs, that is). I dunno about stock.
Just stay away from official 4.3 because it has KNOX which can void your warranty or prevent you from changing bootloader etc. Just use MJ5 bootloader, it is a bootloader for 4.3 which doesn't have KNOX.
Also, custom have 1 big adavtage for me - Note 3 software (It is stable!!).
Cheers,
D.

All right, thanks for the answer. Any more feedback?
Also, any recommendations regarding the color of the phone?

Awsome Note II
Note II seems to be one of the most interesting and customizable devices on the market now and thanks to the devs of custom roms you will be surprised how powerful and changeable this phablet is. Even after more than a year it can compete with many new devices.
Touchwiz and its S-Pen-features are unique :good:
Just take a short glimpse around on other devices here on XDA and you will see that there are only a handfull which have similar amount of custom roms and mods.

[Q] Are the risks worth the benefits?

I got a brand new Galaxy S3 on Monday. Coming from an Inspire 4g and an HD2 before that, I'm not new to flashing ROMs or anything. I rooted that phone almost instantly, because it was a refurbished phone and didn't have a warranty. Now on this one, I'm a bit hesitant to root or flash any custom ROMs.
I've also read a bit about stock vs AOSP ROMs... can any one give me an example of each? Preferably a stable, JB based ROM? I would like to use a stock based ROM so I can have all my apps and settings back when I flash. This stock ROM is eating up battery life rather quickly so I want something quick, stable, and visually pleasing without any bloatware.
I am aware that I can just return my phone to the store within 14 days if it doesn't work... an employee told me they don't even look to see if it's rooted or has a custom ROM.

I think it is worth it. Look through the S3 forums and you'll find various options for ROMs that meet your needs. I'm running Serenity v1.1 which is a JB GNote2 port. It is stable and works well for me.
I would also read MrRobinsons stickied post about Rooting. Towards the bottom of the OP there is a tool mentioned that he made that will help you de-bloat. It works wonderfully. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
I noticed it says the ATT one is " New Image Based off ATT I747UCALG1"
I have the newest software, would I be able to update after doing this? Or will that put me right back where I am now
I just put CM 10 over the stock ICE. Incredible difference. Go for it!

It really depends on what kind of user you are. If you're a user that prefers stability and is not that much of a 'power user', then the risks might be troublesome for you. If you're the user that wants adventure and doesn't mind fixing bugs every now and then, then give it a go. I'm a user that's in a middle of both - I like stability and I'm kind of a power user and I also enjoy fixing bugs because I learn something new and the experience of fixing bugs increases my knowledge of how my phone works. IMO, the most stable ROM I've used so far is CM10 - I'm currently using a nightly build and it works great so far - although it kinda has a few problems like some programs crashing unexpectedly and some phone functions not working properly. My advice is that you decide first what type of user you are and then evaluate the risks you're going to take - there's a high chance that you might brick your phone even if you've rooted a phone before as there are different specs for every phoen and one mistake could cause a serious trouble.

Rooting is easy on this phone, use galaxys3root.com for figuring out rooting and here's a link to aokp jelly bean 4.1.2 by task650 and ktoonsez it is by far in my opinion the best ROM out for the att variant right now its very light and very fast with more customods then you can imagine! Just get rooted install latest cmw recovery I reccomend the touch version and read all of task650's steps for flashing and I guarantee you will be pleased rooting this phone is definitely worth it just wait til you try it with it over clocked to 2100megahertz it crazy fast! In my opinion, I would prefer this guide first before that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
That guide shows information that's what you're probably going to need if you don't want your phone to get out of warranty and if you want your phone's radio functioning properly. I followed that guide step-by-step and thoroughly and so far, I've achieved the desired result which is not to trip the flash counter. Also, I would also suggest that you search through the forums for revised rooting guides before you root your S3.

Here's another thought.
I came from an HD2 which from day one, I was flashing roms and kernels like crazy. I became very good at customizing and finding what I liked. I even worked very closely and aided some of the more popular rom devs. I even designed or hacked out some of my own mods including a memory management system. BUT...I could never achieve with the amazing HD2 (ahead of it' time in many ways) what the Stock Rom ICS and my S3 has done out of the box.
I meant to go to CM10 or a custom rom of some sort, but the stock rom has been a DREAM of stability which I never achieved with the HD2. It's rooted and that allows me to customize features and have more choices for apps that require root etc. I fixed a few things, added Go Launcher EX which was a huge improvement and offers awesome features, tweaked etc., and this thing runs near perfect. It's plenty fast enough. My I747m has 2gb ram and I could write a book as to why I think the 2gb makes a world of potential difference depending on setup. Also, as usual, I have frozen quite a few stock apps with Titanium Backup and replaced them with my favorite apps. (eg Handcent SMS, Kaiten Email, Boat Browser) I miss some CM features that I used to have but I have great speed, fluidity, reliability and generous flexibility....so for now...I am not doing a custom rom. FOR ME personally, I need to stay with a stable rom because I just came from near 2 years of FIXING and tweaking and killing hours upon hours.
I would be happy with just rooting it, as long as I could remove bloatware!

That's what I would do Synyster. It's great to explore, tweak, flash....etc., but if you want the best bang for the buck, best use of time, least amount of troubleshooting and testing.... imho...
- root and install custom CWM for easy flashing of updates/tweaks and for easy backup.
-buy/install Titanium Backup pro and either remove or safer....FREEZE bloatware.
There's a lot of cool things with the AOSP roms. However, I'm at the point where I've become OCD with flashing nightlies. The more I flash ROMs the more nit picky I have been. I'm looking to go back to stock firmware, debloat, root, and CWM. I think that'll be good enough for stability IMO...
I'd say so!

Is there a need for custom rom?

I've been looking at the pictures of some home screens which look spectacular, I just want your opinion. I've just sold my iPhone 5 for Galaxy S3 i9305 LTE and I'm already amazed at being able to do so much. One thing that annoyed me with iPhone was the need to jailbreak if you wanted to do anything, so android is perfect and I think my phone set up with Nova Launcher Prime looks terrific.
Do I really need to go any further as I'd hate having to go back in the jailbreak business.
You and try it out no one is stopping you and I suggest that there is better performance for the phone so it is good

I believe it is a matter of personal preference. This phone is one of the best, so no, there is no need for a custom Rom if it covers all of your needs as if. Just have in mind that some custom roms will give you a performance gain but will break some other stuff. I am not against custom, I've used them since I bought my Spica but this is the first one I do not see the need to go the custom Rom way

Personally, I rooted my previous phones (and my Galaxy Tab) to increase their performance. However, he S3's performance - and come on, dude, you have the LTE version - is worlds apart to that of my previous phones. I still don't see the need to customize it.
However, this is coming from someone who doesn't really mind the TouchWIZ interface that Samsung made. If you really want a stock Android experience, then root, and then install a custom rom.
To be totally honest, don't think a custom rom is needed. That said, some mods DO make it better by a fair bit. For a phone that boasts 1Gb of ram it falls really short on multitasking. It just seems to close any app that stays in the background for a while even if it's memory wasn't needed. Rarely though, it will work properly for some reason. Haven't tried better memory managment mods (will do at some point) but this is the only really important one i'd like stock to do better.
There's also another grey area. Not really a custom rom but the latest samsung leak for the international version make it worlds apart from stock ICS, performance and functions wise. You'd need to get it from unofficial channels since it's a leak and hasn't been officially released yet AND in some countries may never be or just be really delayed for some reason. To install it, of course, you'd have to dable into "jailbreaking" (man i hate this term) business since it isn't official.
Also, in this latest leak, i'm also looking forward to that mod that adds all apps to multiview (haven't installed it yet). Everything else i'd use to want from a custom rom (mainly on my SGS), samsung has just about delivered: configurable toggle buttons, long press toggle to quickly access settings, smart stay/rotate, really smooth UI with touchwiz (even if it redraws often albeit less in this latest ROM), LOADS of ways to ease up your how you interact with your phone (gestures, motions, etc), loads of convenient menus everywhere, etc. Even if something is not to your liking there's a very high chance you can customize it or just get a free app from the market to make it to your liking, most of the time not requiring a rooted phone.
TL: DR: Nop, don't think so. I'd change minor stuff though

Interesting subject..
In reality no, there no need for a custom rom.. its simply an avenue to save time. Eg. If you find yourself installing a multitude of different mods/tweaks everytime you update your phone then a custom rom would suite you because they come installed by default.
If you like as close to the stock experience as possible then by all means no a custom rom is not needed.
In reality a custom rom is simply a collection of mods cooked together by the dev.. roms share very similar mods/tweaks with perhaps some cosmetic differences.
The phrase "jailbreak" originated because of the stock iOS experience being so restricted.. in the Android world the stock experience is the complete opposite, it allows you to do a large range of things although the only thing you may have to do to completely take advantage of your device is root it.
Perhaps this thread should of went into the Q/A area.. but nether the less good subject.

Also, in my opinion, there is no need to root the S3. Samsung have done an amazing job with it! It has great features and you can do so much without having to root. If you like the flavour of custom ROMs, though, you'll need to root. Just check them out and see what suits your everyday needs!
Enjoy!

If you see the OP he actually bought the I9305 which is 2GB ram.. So its good with multitasking. And to the OP you are in the wrong Forum there is a I9305 q/a forum now if you read the forum headings. And about the custom rom, Just go about your way and use your phone normally now if you come to a roadblock or hiccup or want to try tweak it in anyway thats when you start looking into customizing or getting another rom and see if it runs smoother

[Q] 4.3 performance and battery life

I installed 4.3 last week which I now bitterly regret:
- memory footprint has almost doubled
- battery life has almost halved
- most applications no longer launch immediately, there is a black screen or a hang for several seconds before the apps actually launch
Is that to be expected or is there anything that can be done?
By the looks of it, Samsung may have expedited my move to another manufacturer.

Be helpful if you further identified what ROM and build number you use.
Also do u have any mods installed e.g. Note 3 app package?
Don't let available RAM discourage you, Android is meant to use what's available to offer an improved user experience.
Overall, for me the upgrade to 4.3 from 4.1 is a large improvement. Assuming you're on stock 4.3 try a custom ROM. Try them all. That will keep you busy for a while

I use stock, never rooted and updated via OTA. No mods and I did not install anything new after the update. The reason I am concerned about the memory footprint is that it correlates with the performance - it's never great, but anything beyond 1.5Gb and it almost becomes unusable.
While I appreciate the advice, I don't want to go down the route of a custom rom, it should work fine with what the manufacturer provides who does not provide a downgrade option.
I anticipated that Samsung would bungle this too, that's why I could kick myself for installing this.

Yup, I'm picking up what you're laying down...
Keep in mind Samsung released sub par 4.3 builds to many users. Their later releases were vastly improved. Check your build number. Be aware that by rooting you can install a stock Rom that is the latest revision.
I get your stance on stock but given the reality, aren't you best served to take matters into your own hands?

Well, OTA tells me that the latest update is installed so I presume that all their builds are bungled. I don't wish to void the warranty, or worse, brick the device with a custom ROM setup.
Installing and testing different roms until you find one that works is time consuming and I just want a working phone.
But you are right about taking matters into my own hands, I am going to the phone store tomorrow and check out what would suit me, Nexus perhaps or a Lumina.
As far as I am concerned, that was the first and last Samsung phone I have bought.

I would strongly suggest the HTC One or its soon to come successor. Wonderfully polished device and I would argue it's the most fluid Android phone around. It's certainly the most beautiful construction wise. Similarly I much prefer the sense ui over the ghastly samsung touchwiz ui.
Alternatively try a factory reset of your current, although this will be time consuming and, quite frankly, a pain in the ass.
Do a factory reset.

[Q] Poll: Are you glad you updated to 4.4.2 or regret not stiaying with 4.3 longer?

Hey guys, the poll is intended for those who have already flashed the 4.4.2 bootloader already, but comments from anyone on the subject are welcome. Overall, are you glad that you upgraded, or do you wish that you held off until the custom ROMs were a bit more mature? What specific advantages / disadvantages are you seeing vs. 4.3 and what Kit Kat ROM are kernel are you running?
I really like my current combo of Tweaked 4.3, the last Saber kernel, topped off with Wally's Paperkut theme. However, I've been seeing an increasing amount of appealing 4.4.2 ROMs and have been thinking about crossing the point (bootloader) of no return. I've also been seeing a big drop in the amount of complaints about the update, so it appears that most kinks are being irroned out.
So what do you all think? I should note that I'm super-dependent on wifi calling, so I'm limited to the T-mobile base, unfortunately. Some emphasis on NB4 based ROMs would be cool, but feel free to share any T-mobile Note 3 update experience.
I haven't seen any difference ... I will have to google to see what "features" I gained. I didn't like the ability to not be able to write to the SD card, but that's been fixed. And yes, finding a custom ROM isn't the easiest task ever!
I waited until the easy upgrade, root, sd card fix was out, and then did it. I'm super happy I did. The phone overall runs smoother, and takes less resources thanks to the KK OS. The only real thing I noticed was the all white icons, and the rounded toast notifications. I'm happy with the stock ROM since I use a lot of Samsung/TW apps especially the Hub, TV remote, and WhatsOn app, so I'm not looking for an alternate ROM, and plus I also use Xposed to get any features I want/need that the stock ROM doesn't have, so yeah, it's been a great upgrade for me.
I guess upgrade is better than no upgrade. I just didn't like the fact that to root is to trigger the stupid Knox warranty with kkos. But I can not go a full day with an unrooted phone so I root Knox can kiss me bye.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I'm definitely glad I've held off on flashing 4.4.2. I just noticed that Jedi has been bumped up to 1.1, so I'm reading through the thread and might end up Odin-ing up to Kit Kat, or might continue to wait. I've never tried a Jedi ROM, but have found Saber kernel to run best on my device, so I'm kind of tempted to check it out for a while until Tweaked 4.4.2 is released.
Wish there was a way to import my Apex Pro homescreens across ROMs. I think that might be added to Nandroid Manager Pro, but isn't there yet... takes me forever to set up my screens, which is kind of a deterrent in itself from upgrading.
Anyways, any more experience with custom ROMs? Thanks again for the feedback so far.
Voted against, battery life took a dumpsky.
Forgot to mention, what a disappointment that the rounder toasts are the only visual difference. I actually use an Xposed module that backports the new toast style because I like it better. I think it's more congruent with my theme, Paperkut by Wally. I really dig his Kit Kat theme so I actually would have some visual differences but that's really lame as far as the stock update is concerned.

[GT-I9195] Basic CyanogenMod questions

Dear person reading this,
I've recently received an S4 mini, specifically the I9195 and I immediately got annoyed by the stock firmware. The sounds, the look, you probably know it. Since I've been using CM11 on my I9001 for a nice while I was wondering what the status of CM11 on this phone is like?
On the CM website I've seen there are no stable releases yet, so are the nightlies useable on a day-to-day basis? In other words, would you recommend flashing CM11? Are there any features which won't work?
As for the process of flashing itself, I've found this thread which seems to provide a nice overview, so I'm guessing that shouldn't pose any problems.
My apologies if this thread is a bit noobish, I've been reading around a bit but couldn't really find a nice up-to-date overview
Thanks and regards,
Marshian
If you use your S4 mini for anything serious, CM11 is still way too full of bugs. That's gonna change sooner or later, but for now I'd let CM11 wait unless you just use your S4 mini as a toy.
Check the opening post of this thread for a (long) list of bugs in S4 CM11: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558702
Until CM11 is done squashing bugs, the best ROM for S4 mini is a rooted stock ROM, debloated by freezing/removing all the junk that Samsung slapped on, and modded with Xposed.
For a list of what you can freeze/remove (with an explanation of what you freeze/remove): http://android.site666.info/indexapks.htm
Essential (imo) Xposed modules for S4: Downloads2SD, Pictures2SD, Wanam Xposed, XPrivacy, and XVolume.
If you have a KitKat (stock) ROM you'll need HandleExternalStorage too.
Essential app to get rid of annoying sounds: Ultimate Sound Control.
I'm using CM11 on my GT-I9195 and its the only phone I have. The bugs don't hinder everyday use (WhatsApp, chrome, phone calls, SMS) generally except for the odd nightly that causes bootloops or FCs. You can avoid that by waiting for someone to post in the discussion thread whether the latest nightly is bootable or causes any FCs.
As for flashing CM11, the guide you linked is good if you don't care for the warranty. Since you bought your phone recently its likely to have the KNOX flag which signifies whether the phone has been custom-flashed before and I'm most countries this KNOX flag, if tripped, will render your warranty void.
To check if you are on KNOX boot loader, boot into Download mode and see if there is any mention of KNOX.
If there is, there is a guide on how to not trip the KNOX flag while rooting.
IMHO any of KitKat's custom ROM is not mature enough. Still many things to implement for the developers, regardless of being stable or not. Though if better OS resource management is what you after than KitKat is unbeatable. After all, it was Google's intention.
However, any of the JB custom ROM variant are relatively stable and mature, despite some still has the 'beta' tag.
As for TouchWiz ROM, there's a limit to what you can do in terms of optimizing/de-bloat. Unless it a heavily modded TW based ROM. That my experience coming from S3.

Thanks for your input! (This also applies to everyone else who replied )
In terms of warranty, I don't have any anyway. Though it's a brand new phone, I got it as a prize from a competition so there's no way for me to go back to the store and prove I bought it there. Therefore, I don't mind triggering the KNOX-flag.
For now I'll stay away from CM11 then (though it runs really nicely on my S+), but would it be a better idea to mod the stock ROM until it stops sucking or flash CM10.2 (or another version?) on there? It looks like the bug-list for CM10.2 is quite small. Do you know of any features missing there?

I would recommend any custom ROM based on JB. There's no feature missing as I'm aware of. Personally I'm on SlimJB which I've modified a bit myself. KitKat simplay requires time to mature. Even at AOSP the swtich from davilk requires time. Just my two cents.

I am very happy sticking with the last stable 10.2. It is reliable, quick, and battery drain is minimal (I use Gravity Screen Pro but the main power savings come from using Cyanogens advanced wifi settings).
You can always backup everything and try out a CM11.

I'll be going with the same solution once my microSIM and new microSD arrive, thanks!
