So I wanted to install the volume mod on my T-Mobile Note 3. I was looking into rooting it but if I trip the KNOX counter my warranty will be void and with the research I've done there is no way to reset the Note 3 KNOX counter. But I found this video on YouTube. I can't post the link to the video due to he fact that I'm a new member, but I have it. So.if someone would like to investigate I'm willing to give it out.

If you are talking about the DeLaVega method, yes that will root without tripping Knox. To flash the volume mod though, you need a custom recovery like TWRP. Flashing TWRP will trip the Knox counter
Also keep in mind according to this Root De La Vega thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46818366
Samsung has caught on and has started patching bootloaders, you can still root, but you will trip KNOX.
If you are running MJ4, MJ7, MK1, MK2 or higher you can still root, but you will trip KNOX!

This isn't a worry for us N900T users, as we have yet to receive an update. In other words, If you have the Tmobile variant, you don't have a patched bootloader (for now).

I assumed he meant flashing Jovy23's volume mod which is a flashable zip file. It's a waste of everyone's time to read your post unless you post info so the OP can do what you suggest and solve his low volume problem without root.

I have been using Poweramp for over a year, and it works flawlessly. Wait a minute, correct me if im wrong but did you just say people running m17 firmware on there note 3 don't have a patched bootloader?
So does this mean I could flash a custom recovery, rom, kernel, mods and knox won't be tripped?

No. You could never flash a custom recovery without tripping knox. But you can still root without tripping knox, if you're still on m17. By "patched" they meant that Samsung patched the hole that allowed people to root without tripping knox.

Bummer. Have to wait a few months then before going XDA on my new N9005. Normally devices that didn't fail in the first 3 mths won't have manufacturer defects. Personal experience.

I'm guessing no one has successfully been able to protect root through an OTA update? I know it's been done for minor updates before, but I'd assume going to Kitkat is quite a bit more than that.

Looks like they found a way to root the Note 3 without triggering the Knox flag. Hopefully those guys will release this method for T-Mobile.

It may have some thing to do with that, they still have a locked bootloader. So they dont have any working recovery yet. Only have root.

I believe this is correct, rooting a device and flashing custom firmware is completely different.
I wonder if only root will be available for us as well,I'm interested in not loosing my Knox warranty. But root would help for greenify and xposed modules.
EDIT: are we able to keep a valid Knox warranty by only installing root and not installing any custom recovery? (TWRP, CWM) has anyone tried this?

I dont think so. Because we are starting with unlock BL to being with. So the system that is rooting the device take advantage of it, which automatically trips Knox. That's just me conjecturing.
Just wait abit, the phone just came out. I am sure some one will figure out what/how is knox working exactly. Also if you worried about warranty there are plenty of 3rd party warranties available.
Am I the only one who doesn't give a flying fig about Knox? I'm not using it. I have no use for it. Unless I missed something about Knox, it's nothing more that a security protocol that protect business apps on a device. Why would you care if you tripped it if you're never going to use it?

I think the warranty getting void is the problem for some. Not having an option to go back so you can use the warranty is the problem. So if some thing go wrong people can't use Company warranty because they will know thanks to Knox B.S. And can refuse any help/repair.
I have heard that only Samsung checks the knox flag, so T-Mobile and asurion are just fine if it is otherwise stock

My understanding is that the current rooting for our phone voids the Knox warranty because it installs a custom recovery. If there was a way to follow similar procedures as the Att variant we could have root with valid knox warranty. Does anyone know if the Att rooting method will also work with the T-Mobile model?

I believe the att version of the Note3 is completely different from the t-mobile version.
and
the knox flag is designed to be permanent. There is no way of getting around it, I believe.

I'd love to get this for the T-mobile version - all I want to do is root only so I can change the DPI and use some xposed modules. If I can do this without triggering the Knox flag, that would be great.

Lol I hope so. Chanfire has been saying that it will be a PITA to get a counter reset for Knox warranty since it blows an efuse when flashing anything. He said the binary counter can be reset a little easier, but knox status will already be flagged so binary counter reset won't really make a difference in the long run.
All we need is a way to insert root via adb maybe, without requiring a custom recovery to be installed. This will give us valid knox warranty status and root access. I would love to install titanium backup and xposed with greenify to increase battery and add a few other modifications to this amazing phone.

I myself am luck that I never updated my bootloader or anything, Knox Counter doesn't show on my Bootloader. (I have the T-Mobile S4, by the way, not the Note 3.)

I think there is a way to root note3 without triggering the Knox just like the att note3. But once Knox is triggered there is no way to go back.

Haven't tried it yet but here a link which has step by step instructions on how to root SGH-T889 running android 4.3.

Yeah, I just ran chainfires method and something odd happened. I have superuser but I can't actually use it. That KNOX BS prevents it from running and issues a security warning that reads "Unauthorized access to a secure area has been blocked tap to learn more" .

This only disables the notifications from KNOX and not the KNOX itself.
I think notifications can be disabled within KNOX settings.

In download mode it showed KNOX was tripped. 'Knox warranty void: 1" I ended up bricking it, which is all the same, I don't like KNOX bs anyway. I spun a good yarn to T-Mobile so I'll have another Note 2 tomorrow hopefully on something below 4.3 lol.

Sorry to hear that, can you elaborate how it got bricked ?
Did you try to downgrade ? Flashing it back to 4.3 worked for S3 phones.
I mean once you are on 4.3 you cannot flash back to an older version (4.1.x) easily. There must be a way via CWM or TWRP.
Some of us can use this information to NOT brick our phones.

Just a quick update on this. I used the vroot method. I am now rooted with xposed and titanium backup confirmed (I factory reset after ota. .... Much smoother! !) Oh and Knox is still at 0!! Hooray for new

So...I decided to take a chance and try to some things on my own, you know, show some initiative. I wont be doing that again and have gained even more respect for what you devs do. Here's the story. I tried to root the 4.3 using chainfires method, after being warned by psycho4us4 that it prolly wouldn't work. It did work, sort of... I had superuser and with root explorer was able to access system files. However, I could not alter or change any of the files. When I attempted to, the explorer would stop responding. It's also important to note I was never asked to grant SU permissions. That dialogue was replaced with the notification bar warning (apparently issued by KNOX) that an app was trying to access a restricted area of the device (lol) which I ignored. So now I have my Note II with SU and KNOX tripped showing warranty void 1 in the download mode So I'm thinking "Ok I'll flash back to MD1 with ODIN" Into download mode I go and start up ol ODIN I load the firmware and let it run. After going through the entire process it fails at the end. Now I have the Keis firmware failed screen....a brick.

Just curious how you say to have gotten one by tomorrow ive been with tmobile/voicestream for 13 years and have yet to see a phone overnighted, also to fix your problem just odin it again with new 4.3 phone will work

I'm having trouble deciding which route I want to go. Don't know if I want to use the link with the Warranty Safe Root way(have already cooked the rom per it's directions) or if I want to go the cf-auto root way. I don't know anything about the vroot method. Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated.
I thought I'd be clever too and do a factory reset from the phone and it hung on the tmo boot screen, but I ended up downloading the stock 4.3 tar file and ODIN back to 4.3 and it works again.
The Chainfire root way is definitely not the way to go as it does not work.
Going to try the vroot way to see if I can get root back.
With vroot download supersu before starting them make sure as soon as the phone boots up after rooting open supersu update binary and let it delete the other manager.

There isn't one. All links were removed from xda because some suspicion of the program as a virus. If you followed the link I posted you would see that. Now there are tons of positive reports and I used it. My antivirus didn't report it either. However, if you feel comfortable using it you will need to Google it

I dont have a custom recovery installed, so i need to do this. I see lots of different versions of vroot, is the latest version?

So i've been doing some research and RLDV clearly can achieve root without tripping the flag. But it seems too messy for me and I really dont want to be assed to download so many things. I hear about Kingo and was curious if this was useable to achieve root as well and not trip the knox flag?
Furthermore, I read somewhere that it's actually possible to flash SafeStrap and not trip knox flag? anybody have more information on this?
I just used Kingo, one program to download, it probably downloads extra files automatically (it's multi device) and I have root, pretty much painless. I'm assuming Knox flag is not tripped, but I'm too lazy to look for info how to check, since it would be too late now to do anything anyhow. Surprisingly it did not work with my older back up phone GS3, updated to 4.3, Knox included. Kingo will also unroot your phone as well with one click. Can't help with Safestrap, as I just wanted to remove region lock and kill some bloatware.
kingo will NOT trip Knox. and it's painless to do. download app on the pc, connect your device, click a couple times, instant root. nothing else changes

some rooting methods will trip Knox. for example Chainfire's method will trip Knox. Kingo wont

This was a thread on the Kingo method on I believe the Note 3 general board that got closed by the mods because they wanted to look into the software more.

I'm coming from a Nexus 10 which is dying soon (bad motherboard) and was looking at getting a Wifi 32gb Note 10.1. But I have a few questions for the seasoned pros here :cyclops:

smooth. have noticed no hangups or stutters or anything like that — i gotta say that TouchWiz in KK has been much less crappy than i thought it would be. YMMV depending on your apps. that said, i'm coming from an Asus TF700, which was a complete POS, and the Note 10.1 (2014) has been a dream in comparison.

install Apex (what i did) or Nova as your launcher. and/or root and freeze apps via Titanium.

they weren't problems so much as frustrations that Samsung decided in its wisdom not to enable it for this tablet. it runs fine out of the box with KK without HMP.
Oh and will rooting void the warranty?
Yes. Rooting will cause the KNOX bit to change. KNOX bit is detecting any non KNOX kernels. And once you do that, it fires.
But we are still not sure whether it will cause warranty issues. IMHO It's just a safe assumption right now. I am happy without rooting my device.

No you will NOT trip Knox if you Root,,I'm rooted on my Note 3 and Tab and counter is 0×0

For the Sanpdragon variant SM-P605 there is a method called de la vega.

Reportedly they have been able to do it without tripping the KNOX bit. The method was ported from Note 3 to Note 10.1-14 (605).
But for Exynos variant i.e. WiFi version P600. The method is Chain Fire's AutoRoot.

kingo seems indeed very easy. Will it work on MJ9 build without trippin knox? (SM-P605)
I'm asking beacause I was reading that not all fw support it without knox trippin....

Are you saying Kingo Root doesn't trip the Knox fuse? I have been looking hard for a way of doing this and so far seen absolutely nothing, here or anywhere else, to suggest that this is possible. This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538345 suggests it doesn't even work much less do so without blowing the fuse.

Hi yes, I have rooted both my devices and can go into download mode and counter says Ox0 ,,the boot loader is locked,,so i am still on stock ROM, I don't have Safe strap on either,,,I really have no need for flashing other Roms since I get 3-4 days of battery out of my Note 3. I believe if you "flash" another ROM its possible it might a e fuse ,,..I could be wrong ..

I assumed you have the P600 wifi based on your signature. What KK rom build version you were using when you rooted your device? With the D2(latest) Kingo not even work!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53135814 .At this time, there is no way to root the p600 without triping the knox counter.

This was exactly my understanding as well. I'd love to be able to root mine without blowing the fuse and I don't care about installing a different ROM, I just want root access.
There must be some misunderstanding here because this is literally the only reference I have found on the web in six months of looking, to being able to root a P600 without blowing the fulse.

If you read GalaxyNotesTx comment, he mentioned Note 3 instead of Note 10.1...He just confused between his devices! Again, currently no way to root without trip the knox counter.

You are quite right. That is disappointing but not surprising.
Kingo Root tries to root my 4.3 Note10 but fails.
I had to CF root thru Odin and knox is 0x1.
Kingo Root did root my 4.4 Note3 but knox is 0x1.
Ok, so I was rooted all the way back in Nov 2012 when I got my N2, and have been running mostly AOSP rooms ever since. Last one I had was Liquid Smooth, a 4.4.4 rom, which I was using 3 days ago.
BUT ...
I wanted tap and pay available in Google Wallet and for the life of me, I don't know how to enable it in an AOSP rom. So I went back to stock unrooted, and OTA'd my way up to AT&T stock 4.4.2 which they put out a couple weeks ago. Now Google Wallet tap and pay is up and running nicely.
BUT...
I hate being unrooted. So I want to root again, but now I have Knox, and I want to root without tripping the Knox counter. Trouble is, all the root guides I know about (including the video right here on xda), are two years old, before they had Knox, and so they don't include any steps that I know of to disable the counter.
So, how do I root my 4.4.2 At&t N2 without tripping Knox?
(I'm super bummed nobody has enabled Tap and Pay in a 4.4 AOSP rom).

If you got your phone way back when then tripping Knox shouldn't matter as Knox only voids the warranty which would have ended November 2013 assuming you got it November 2012

understood. i mostly wanted to know because of my "hacker's heart". IOW, it's more fun/satisfying for me if i can do it without tripping the knox counter.

I think as long as you don't do anything to the recovery i think you can root without tripping knox maybe look into it

Are you saying maybe root without a custom recovery (cwm or twrp)?
Interesting idea. Cant say ive ever heard of a root that does not automatically install a custom recovery. Have yiu?

Certainly possible to root without installing recovery or changing any partitions. For instance, on the Galaxy S II, where I'm familiar with things, we use Framaroot with the Aragorn exploit as the rooting method of choice. It installs only Superuser and the SU binary. The Note II is in the list of exynos devices that it will work with, and the exploit would be one of Sam, Frodo, Legolas or Aragorn. Hope this is useful to you.
I just purchased a used Note II for my wife, so I need to be doing some reading to get up to speed on this device. I honestly have no idea yet if rooting would cause you any problems with the knox counter, assuming you are even vunerable to that. So YMMV.
Theres an apk you can get that maybe roots your phone like towelroot.com idk if that will work for the note 2 or not tho
