This is a question to all devs who understand the underlying system far better than I. I have a T-Mobile Note 3 and am interested in moving to CM but where I live the signal is not great at all so I MUST use Wifi calling and MMS. now is the mechanism a module that can be moved to another rom or is this something baked into the samsung based rom itself?
If I can move to another type of non samsung rom and take wifi calling with me how can this be done or is it a feature that will have to be added to source and recompile?
Thanks so much everyone maybe if there is no way to do it now maybe we as a community can find a way to do this and bring it to other devices that do not have this type of feature.
I am not aware of anyone getting T-Mobile wifi calling working on an aosp ROM. It requires very deep integration into the system. It's not just an app, though it probably could be if they cared to write it properly.
If I had a need for it, I'd use csipsimple and voip.ms or callcentric. I believe the AOSP dialer app supports sip calling as well.
I've been tmobile for years with many phones and have never heard anyone porting it. Make that happen and lots of donations would come at ya like a stripper getting rain'd on

The sad thing is I remember reading awhile back that tmobile was planning to open source their wifi calling software.

Thank you for asking this question. I was wondering the exact same thing because I just flipped to a CM based 4.4.2 ROM last night and the dev said WiFi calling was specific to Samsung ROMs, which didn't make any sense to me.
Does/would WiFi calling have a completely different script in AOSP versus TW?
All I know is I would definitely be in the group that 'makes it rain' for a dev that implements the feature into an AOSP ROM for the Note 3.

Well since it is baked into the samsung roms it would mean that it would have to be reverse engineered. no one seems to want to take the time to do it or they can't figure it out and from what i know they would be able to get about 60k from various device forums.

except that you are mistaken. My old phone was an LG G2X and both CM7 and CM9 have WiFi Calling working on that phone's releases.
What exactly is needed to get it working? Can you just copy the APK and associated files from a stock rom and paste them into a CM9 or is there some underlying system-level programming that has to be done as well?
It is not in the cm9 d2tmo 7/27 nightly.
Cm9 least brings back the 2g/3g toggle so battery life is better than stock without wifi calling in 2g only mode.
Fyi the nightlies are stable... only issues for me are with camera

I haven't bothered to look through the sgs3 source, but on my old t-959 vibrant, wifi calling also required support compiled into the kernel (KINETEO_GAN or something like that) so it's likely that we'll need the source and means to do the same for the sgs3 before wifi calling is even a possibility on cm10.
And hey, maybe that support is already in the source, like I said, I haven't bothered to download it and check.
Cheers

I just reflashed my old Desire Z with the official CM7.2 downloaded from RomManager, and it came with the TMo WiFi calling built in. I'm very interested in this. My office is a cellular black hole. I need to be able to make WiFi calls with my TMo number. I don't care about the other free WiFi calling apps. I hope CM will eventually support this, or someone comes out with a patch.
BTW, the CM team is amazing. I'm not complaining about them.

Yeah, any of the roms that are based off of T-Mobile 4.1.2 will have the premium suite and WIFI calling. Any that are ported from a different carrier will not have wifi calling. Right now, the best and most flawless are either Stockorama or Infamous. If you scroll down the forum a bit, you will see at least about 10 more that where released but arent near as good as though two. After all, when something hits perfection, how much better can it possibly get? There are only a few ports left that are still being maintained every since T-Mobile got the upgrade. Mainly, it is just Hyperdrive. Most of the rest are T-mobile and have all the features.
If you want a more AOSP feel use AOSPWIZ. I'm loving it! It's butter smooth! WiFi Calling and Multi Window work great too.

That is because from what I understand, roms from the international phones use a completely diferent partition structure than the US carriers. That is the same reason why flashing an international rom on your phone will completely hard brick it where as one from a different carrier will most likely only cause boot loops. That pretty much makes it impossible to port anything that was made ffor the international phones to the us carriers.

I know right? We could make tmobile base roms of off the international roms but thats a lot of work. International s3 roms now run on jkay frameworks and everything else. That is a code by code to be ported over. Would have to be somebody that knows code smali work.
As of wanam he have released a rom for our tmobile s3 but is based of ics. Never been updated.
And those ported roms that are verizon based that had mw were not officially mw it was ported from the note 2. Verizon recently released the mw on them. Right now if I believe att is the only carrier without official mw and premium suits.
Remember a lot that used to work on 4.1.1 might not work on 4.1.2. If you look smali codes from both version are totally different.
But to tell you the truth. I really wish at least a 4.2 leak comes out for any us variant of the S3. International are now rocking 4.2.2 leak. And looks awesome. As for wifi calling. Tmobile have changed a lot. Used to with the g2 and g2x witch were aosp phones had wifi calling but now not even the n4 have it. And I dont think that Gs4 google edition will have either. I know there are some 3rd party apps that let you call over wifi but those wont let you use your own carrier phone number.
Why not go to the general tmobile note 2 forums and follow my Google voice + FreePBX tutorial which shows how to call over wifi with an Android app called csipsimple?

Neither of them come with either of those at the moment. Xposed framework though is made to install to any rom after you flash. Check the link in my sig. If you are refering to which Super User permission app that they come with, they both use SuperUser by Koush but you can also download and install any one from the play store such as SuperSU and it will update the binaries accordingly.

The two I mentioned are not at all like SuperSU...
I'm surprised Xposed per-app permissions could possibly work well without being "baked in" to the ROM? It sucks that Android doesn't come with something like PDroid built in from the start, running without something like that is like, I dunno, having un-protected sex with strangers (slightly less serious perhaps, but almost).

Thanks, lojak29. Although I have no doubt the ROMs without wi-fi calling are otherwise outstanding and in some respects probably superior to the stock-based ROMs, this is a feature I simply cannot do without. Along with the somewhat lower price for TM service, wi-fi calling is what keeps me from considering switching to another carrier. Perhaps the devs could add "WFC" or something similar to the tagline when they post new ROMs?

Devs usually do ad wifi calling in a change log, this post is nothing more or less than an immediate at a glance (source) for whomever to pick a rom with wifi calling.. others seem to find it fit to say screw the generosity and lets just make it hard and search every rom change log for such a feature that is Heavily asked upon.People wether most care or not Really use the dang wifi calling alot infact...and its always asked everywhere. . So by being helpful with the topic it would be easy to look in thread and know instantly what roms have it.. and even some people know its in stock tmo roms, but they dont always know if a dev added or removed it in a particular rom one may have in mind... hence why they now can look Into the thread for a fast answer.

No one say it can't be done and yes there's peoples trying very hard to get it done. The older phone was much easier as it was an app. Now it's cooked into the framework, spread out ask over the place. Till then however the answer is still the same. Only tmobile base ROM will have Wi-Fi calling.
HTC One guys got it working so it's just a matter of times. Plus that bounty is pretty big.

Short answer - WiFi calling is only for T-Mobile and only for Touchwiz Roms. Period.

Thank you for the reply.
Now, I guess the question is why can't the WiFi calling script be implemented into an AOSP source?
Is it a matter of no dev feeling the motivation? It looks like the WiFi calling SDK is available...

WiFi Calling is something integrated deep into the OS. The SDK likely is for allowing apps to work with that closed source OS system, not to duplicate it. It would have to be completely reverse engineered by studying network packets generated by the phone during WiFi calling, figure out the protocol and any encryption used, find any encryption keys needed, and rewrite everything from scratch based around those findings. Not an easy task, and for the most part it's of fairly low reward to most users as normal calling works fine. That said I was reading a discussion recently on /r/linux about the Antrax kernels (forget what device it was for) and the developer witholding source code (which is illegal under the GPL if you distribute binaries). It looked like one of the sources that might be witheld is an open source WiFi calling implementation.

If he really does have WiFi calling working at the kernel level then we should be pressuring whoever is entitled to make him release code to do so. By the nature of the GPL license anything at all that goes into a kernel binary released to the public MUST be released under the same license (GPLv2) and thus those people who received the binary are entitled to his source code which they can then redistribute.
Wow. Really good info. Thank you for sharing.
I do happen to be in the minority group that has shoddy coverage, so wifi calling is a godsend.
It's unfortunate firms like the one discussed in that post don't have to be 'resolved' quickly, given the volatile responses. Either make them share it asap, or figure out the price points and let everyone know how the game is going to be played...
Here's to hoping a dev feels compelled to go through all the hard work you mentioned nonetheless. Cheers!

My wife has an LG optimus l9 (I think that's what it is anyway) with wifi calling - it's a T-Mobile-variant phone thing more than a particular android skin (TW, Sense, ...whatever LG calls its thing..., etc.).
Isn't wifi calling just on t mobile regardless of the phone

WiFi calling is on many T-mo phones, but not all and it's not only Samsung and it doesn't have to be smart phone either. My father has it on some older flip phone, not sure what it is running but I'm sure it's not touch wiz, probably not even Android. I think even some old Nokias had it under Symbian?

In reference to the Note 3 it is only Touchwiz.

Is it fair to assume that if a developer's ROM is TW-based, Wifi calling is implemented as 'standard', or would the developer need to specifically build it in?
I'm curious because I see TW-based ROMs for the Note 3 that don't say anything about Wifi calling as a feature.

It has to be both TW-based AND TMo(carrier)-based (meaning the international TW bases won't have the native Wifi Calling feature).
