hope this is the correct place to post this. i wanna post this to help those that are/were in the same boat that i was in prior to flashing the full 4.3 MK2 tar file. excuse my noobness as i'm not sure if the 4.3 M919UVUEMK2 is bootloader or baseband. if you know what it is, please correct me. thank you.
current rom i'm using is the infamous alpha s4 12.04 12.14.2013 (release date i think) --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362636. after flashing this rom, there are countless issues regarding loss of data, call drops, etc. prior to flashing the full 4.3 M919UVUEMK2 tar, my issue was more on the side of not sending and receiving mms w/o having to disable wi-fi (after flashing 4.3's modem.bin to change baseband from MDL to MK2). unfortunately, this didn't really help me at all, honestly, til i read:

i've also searched about getting KNOX'd. sure i was scared about voiding warranty, because i have this s4 for about 3-4 months only, lol. in any case, i downloaded the full 4.3 M919UVUEMK2 tar file (read this post from same thread above: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48669487&postcount=4399), and flashed it, rooted my s4, flashed philz recovery (the latest), clean/wipe phone, and re-install alpha s4 12.04. after doing all of this, i was worried again about getting KNOX'd so i double check and triple check and no KNOX -- me very happy. the only downside is that triangle away doesn't seem to work on MK2, so my counter is 4 and, yes i can send and receive mms w/o having to disable wi-fi . i will constantly test calls on this rom to see if there will be any drops or what not, so we'll see how it goes.
hope this isn't TL;DR lol. i'm still very new at this rom scene, and i hope to get better as a user because i can't program worth a damn  also, i hope that this will help or lead others to help them in finding their solution in other 4.3 roms out there.

To answer your question, the mk2 is a firmware version. But if you break it down you have a mk2 boot loader, mk2 modem, etc etc. The firmware contains all these things and their all mk2 version. So you can have mk2 firmware, mk2 bootloader, mk2 modem/baseband etc etc. Mk2 is just the firmware they came from

yes. don't have another phone to take a pic of my sgs4 in it's download mode; but on the top left of the screen, in download mode, it tells me this:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-M919
CURRENT BINARY: Custom

ofc, please correct me if i'm incorrect about these things. i'm assuming that from this pic on this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47878403, indicates the phone is in download mode and that that is where to check for KNOX. again, correct me if i'm wrong

Hate to break it to ya, but that is not the mk2 Knox enabled bootloader.
If it was , under system status it'd say Knox kernel lock 0x0 and under that Knox something else 0x0.
The link you got the firmware from, which was on Jamesons AFH, must of contained the mdl bootloader

i thought i did reply correctly. like previously stated, i don't have another phone or camera on hand to take a pic of my Download mode, what i listed is all that i saw on when i'm in download mode. so, there is no KNOX Warranty Void: 0x0, or 0x1 on that screen.
pretty much like shiny said above, the mk2 tar file that i flashed from jamison904 did not have the 4.3 bootloader in it; and it seems to be a good thing lol. hope that helps.
I am not sure that it did not trip the Knox security..

The only way to find out if it 0x0 or 0x1, is to install the Knox app itself !
Yes, it will let you install it to a certain point & when you try to set it up (if your Knox is tripped) it will tell you that it can't be installed !
Then you can uninstall the app.
---------- Post added at 11:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:45 AM ----------
There is no much discussion on this application (for none rooted or custom ROMS), but if you manage to not trip the Xnox security flag, this app is somewhat a nice to have.
It creates a second UI (User Interface) on your phone with ability to customize it completely differently from you regular settings with some Samsung (I know, many will considered it as bloatware) specially design apps for Knox.
It is useful especially, if you intend to keep some concealed info, documents & videos...etc.

If it's not displayed in the bootloader, said user doesn't have the Knox infused bootloader. So there's nothing to check. I think you're referring to the other flag. The flash counter. Which isn't the same thing as the Knox.

My question really is how did this happen? I thought if you flash that Tar file you automatically pickup the 4.3 baseband and knox with it. Could this be remaining from you updating just the modem? For me the problem is that I cannot seem to update the modem to mk2. I do not really see any advantage of locking the bootloader with Knox and if my screen stops working stupid T-Mobile will find a way to refuse to fix the phone!

Do you think you can point me to a package like that where I will not pickup the bootloader? I have been trying to just update the modem using odin and keeps failing. Maybe flashing a non knox tar file will do the trick to get everything to work properly so that I flash 4.3 finally!
Maybe the OP can also post a link to the package he flashed using Odin!

Ok, here are the prerequisites for not getting the KNOX POX:
#1: Don't allow the flashing of the M919 MK2 4.3 OTA update
#2: Don't Odin flash the official stock M919 MK2 4.3 TAR firmware. (SamMobile or elsewhere)
#3: Don't Odin flash the M919 MK2 4.3 NON-HLOS.BIN
#4: Don't Odin flash any bootloaders
If you have NOT done either one of those four things you will NOT catch the KNOX.
You can Odin flash the 4.3 M919 MK2 MODEM but it is completely optional.
See which one has the best signal for you.
( or keep the M919 MDL MODEM which is already in your phones.)
The phone will work just fine with either the MK2 modem or the MDL.
You can flash any cwm/twrp flashable M919 MK2 4.3 or MDL 4.2.2 zip file stock or custom roms.
If you follow these rules above you will not loose audio, signal or wifi and you will not catch KNOX POX.
Now that's not too difficult to understand right? LOL
Good luck!

In addition to the poster above, another way to look at it if you are simply trying to avoid getting it without messing around much:
SAFE:
1) Any ROM that is flashable THROUGH CWM/TWRP/PhilZ won't include an updated bootloader. You can install 4.3 or 4.4 and still keep your bootloader and/or baseband (i.e, MDL, MDB).
UNSAFE:
1) If you ODIN flash (meaning you plug your cable into your phone, start up Odin, put your phone in download mode, then PDA a stock FW), you WILL get the KNOX bootloader.
2) If you update through KIES.
3) If you update through the OTA (in Settings -> About Device -> Software update) .
Some people believe if you trip knox then you will void your 1 year samsung warranty. I dont think it's been confirmed. And i dont think it would matter to me since it's such a short warranty and it doesnt cover accidental damage
Ok, well I've actually updated my phone through kies (4.3) the same day it was released but I was losing signal way too often so I used my 4. 2 back up and restored it... But my flash counter was 6 so I odined and did a reset on the flash counter and then used infamous (4.3) and I'm still on MDL so how do I know if I have knox?

If you updated your phone using Kies/OTA or Odin flashed the official 4.3
firmware then you definitely caught the knox pox.
The way to tell if you have knox is to put your phone into download mode and
look at the top left side of the screen where you will see tiny blue writing.
You will see the knox status as either 0x0 or 0x1 if its 1 you have knox.
There is nothing you can do about it at the present time.
A lot of the developers are trying to over come the knox issue but so far no luck.
Even with the KNOX you can use your phone just like if it did not have the knox.
You can download and flash any cwm/twrp flashable custom/stock zip file roms
as well as any of the themes, mods and anything else requiring cwm/twrp flashing.
You can even odin flash the 4.3 official stock M919 rom from SamMobile
and it will work just fine. However you will still have KNOX.
KNOX is just another way for Samsung retailers to know if you have
messed around with your phone and gives them a good enough reason
why not to honor the warranty.
Good luck!
Well I went into download mode and I did not see any blue writing but I did see this in white: 0x30

Hi there,
I haven't been updated on rooting and all that jazz in a while, so please excuse my ignorance.
I have a Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999) on 4.1.2. It's stock rooted, but I don't have a custom Recovery or anything on it. I didn't (and don't) want to trip the root counter.
Is there a way to upgrade my phone to 4.3, have root working, and not trip the root counter? (Basically, what I currently have, except on 4.3)
Also, I Googled this new Knox feature I've seen people talk about, it seems like a lot of people here don't like it-- should I not want it on my phone too?
Happy holidays,
-Proxin
The counter is easy enough to reset if still on 4.1.2, so your best bet is to install a custom recovery through odin, then flash docholiday's 4.3 stock deknoxed rom and the new modem, and the at&t kernel for working wifi. This way you can use triangle away to reset the flash counter. If you install 4.3 with 4.3 firmware, you will not be able to root without tripping the knox counter.
Hope this helps

From what I understood back in the day when I got root, if you installed a custom recovery, you either triggered the counter or lost all your data/wiped the phone. Is that still the case?
Edit: Or was it un-tripping the counter that caused the data to wipe?
If you want 4.3 touchwiz, root, and a warranty, all at the same time, don't take the official update.
Instead, flash the 4.3 ROM zip, 4.3 modem, and a compatible kernel, using twrp or cwm recovery.
If you ever need to odin, do not use any version newer than MD5 or you are stuck with Knox and can never go back.

It still triggers the counter, but it can be reset. It did not wipe my data, but backup just in case. Resetting the counter did not wipe data either. But do not update to the official 4.3 if you want to root and still have a warranty.

To fix root, enable developer options by pressing build number 7 times, then enable root access for apps and adb under dev options.
MJC is TW 4.3 which includes knox. AFAIK the root66 version has knox removed from the rom, but it is impossible to remove it from the bootloader.

I don't understand-- it seems like it says Knox is removed in order for root to stick:
4.3 Image Notes: With 4.3 images, KNOX is removed in order for root to stick. This will flag the Knox counter. Once you flash one of these 4.3 images you now have the latest factory stock bootloader, radio, etc. Flashing a prior bootloader can hard/soft brick your device. Please read and understand what you are doing.

I took it to mean root will flag the Knox counter so it has been removed from the images.
The wording is very ambiguous...
I'm pretty close to just nuking my install and starting over with CyanogenMod, not caring if I trip the counter or not. Is it possible to do so with the current setup, or will I end up with a brick/semibrick somehow? I figure I might as well, since rooting will likely trip the counter anyway.

Yes, I could have been worded better. You can flash other

I ended up just saying "eff it" and hopped onto CyanogenMod. Probably tripped the root counter, but by now I just don't care anymore.

You did trip the Knox counter.
Just so anyone else reading this thread knows, if you value your warranty DO NOT UPDATE TO 4.3 VIA ODIN . Instead, flash the 4.3 rom , kernel, and modem zips in CWM or TWRP recovery.
Do not Odin MJC (or MK4 for you T999L people) if you want root and warranty, as once you are on the Knox boot loader you can't go back.

One of the things that bugs me about forums, finding information is a pain the butt. I just want to get my device back to stock so I can get OTA updates, GPS doesn't suck, and can use Wifi. I don't care about root anymore or using custom roms. I'm learning Objective C right now to branch into iOS development. I'm sick of the Android ecosystem, to be frank.
I'm on Wicked Rom with Android v4.1.1
Baseband T999UVDMD5, Kernal 3.0.65-DeviantKernel_07
I'm downloading T999UVUEMJC_T999TMBEMJC_TMB.zip right now, along with root66_TMO_T999UVUEMJC_2.7z
Which one do I need to flash? if root66 gives me root, then cool I'll take it, but as I said, I don't care. I'll be using Mobile Odin since I'm on a mac and I sold my PC. If I need to install Windows via bootcamp then so be it, but I really don't want to.
If I need to update the rom, kernel, modem, etc all separately where do I find those files? *scratches head*
I've googled, and googled myself into a dizzy spell
wt?
I need some clearer understandings once more for a spinning brain please.
I was so ready to chef it up for this phone,
figured i get to the latest firmware and start from there, there had to be a way to revert it if any..
tisk tisk.. speeding i hit this freggin obnoxious knox case
now what i am asking is for a bit of intel..
what can i do to get around this and get to really building again for this phone ( SCH-i435 ) besides get a new one?
I brought it back from a brick with the help of a few but now i wanna customize my way,
can i flash a modded kernel?
recovery?
rom?
really, what can i do? if i can't do much I gotta get a new phone, lol.
Thanks in Advance
I am not sure cause I have ran into the same problem. I think once time Knox is tripped you might be able to flash from Odin. Maybe a new bootloader can be flashed, one workout Knox on it but not shore still trying to research it.

it seems to differ between devices but that's what i mean by i need a clearer picture. I'll build it but what do i have to build around and how or what needs to be done to accomplish custom roms on a knoxed up device?
So with knox there's no custom recovery or rom? Has to be a way!?! Right? Help..

though i have heard much about it voiding warranty but idc bout that, I wanna be customatic already.. so what is this you mentioned that i could flash if i didn't trip it already? thanks for replying as well
You can root using kinko, or saferoot without tripping the knox and flash your recovery thru Odin.

youve done this? custom recovery with knox?
sch-i435? verizon
I've rooted with kinko but when I flashed my recovery it tripped the knox, for me anyways. From what I read theirs are fine. My tripped knox may be because I didn't use Odin to flash my r recovery, not sure.

So what you are indeed telling me is that you have knox bootloader and a custom recovery on a sch-i435?
hi !
I heard lots of things about bootloader Knox on the net ,and for to clarify (the truth ) :
This new bootloader with Knox flag (waranty) is ONLY a "simple" counter !!! no other .... you can use your phone normally , no restriction at all !!!
But Kies software,(in theory , need to check the phone (so , this counter ) for to work ...and there are big chance that he don't reconize the phone (i have not tested myself )
....and the only way to flash a rom stock is by ODIN , it work !!! ( official stock signed work fine with Knox flag tripped 0-1 ! ) and for example with these official site ====> http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/2/ good:
but with Flag tripped too ,i belive that the bootloader Knox security is "definitively" OUT and Knox don't work cleanly ==> not important at all !!! completely Useless ......we are not politicians, militaries ,in the FBI,NSA,CIA ,business .....who need "very" strong sécurity ! it's "too much"
....and last android version have SElinux security (efficient and sufficient ! )
Flag tripped is a very big confusion with waranty because for example in Europe with laws: the manufacturer Samsung must support on SAV rooted phones ! ...... but Samsung is out-of law (illegal ! ) to refuse phone with official stock rom ROOTED only (because flag tripped) !!! Damn...

For starters, Thanks!
2 begin:
So what you're saying is that with knox tripped you can't flash custom Rom or recovery or kernel
But with knox installed as long as not tripped one can flash away?
I'm asking cause I love to build my custom Roms for personal use and unless I'm just off with my code I can't seem to flash a custom kernel via odin or get a working recovery going yet. Stopped trying as hard cause I thought knox was in my way. But if I can go head to building I'll get back to it right now, lol.
Sent from my SCH-I435 using Tapatalk
yes ..... no !
i have said about stock officials firmware !
with odin ,all work ! as usual , we can flash CWM ...and after customs rom with .zip ......i have said that we "can use your phone normally , no restriction at all !!!"
And you can build stock with last update ,but without Knox bootloader too ( easy for a dev ) for to update !
(example with my french forum : http://www.phonandroid.com/forum/li...msung-galaxy-s4-mini-lte-gt-i9195-t78266.html )
BUT !!! if some people update the old bootloader with the new one (with Knox) .....it's too late !!!! definitive ...
no solution for backup old recovery , impossible ! ( like reset the Knox )
It seems that it's not an "e-fuse" (spéculation ! ) ,but a script written somewhere on the bootloader , "read only" protected with a code .

When I first rooted my S4 mini duos with a kernel that gave root but didn't support my wifi, it set the KNOX flag (should have researched better). The thing is that to recover wifi (and lose the root) I used Kies to download and restore firmware. Kies allowed me to do so and "repaired" my phone without much issue. (Of course, the warranty void bit was still set even I after I fixed the phone with KIES) I think the warranty bit is just to tell the service people that you flashed something in the past, and doesn't block KIES or other operations.
The Knox *software* (not the boot loader) , however, does do some stuff that makes it harder to have fun with your phone , like blocking rooted apps unless you disable it.
As others have said, the Knox bootloader is only a counter; a flag to let Samsung know that you have a non stock kernel.
I have an I9192 and rooted with saferoot. Didnt trip knox. I then flashed TWRP which did give me a 0x1 on Knox. I am not worried about the warranty, so no big deal. I have a stock ROM....MK4. All aspects of my phone work fine.

Well I'm off the next couple days hopefully I'll figure something out. I'm experiencing build errors, wanted to ask orca86 for some help but he's not accepting pm's. Not sure of who else to ask. Think I know what to do to fix but would rather some input before attempting cause it'll be my phone first.. I'm sorry we don't have the device's source code yet cause that would help a lot. I can't wait to get us Rockingham! Lol

Im rooted on 4.4 stock. I am not happy with KK and was wanting to downgrade to either 4.3 or earlier
Ive searched, and cant find a definitive answer that im comfortable enough with to proceed, so I'll ask bluntly
Is it safe to downgrade from 4.4 to an earlier version if i use a stock TAR and Odin? Will I have modem issues if I do?
If I can, which is less problematic? 4.3? 4.1?
Absolutely not. Flashing through ODIN will flash a bootloader, as well. Flashing bootloaders that are older than the one you're currently on will cause Knox to run the killswitch in your device.
In other words, you'll be the proud owner of a very expensive paperweight.
It would be better to flash a rooted stock zip of an older TouchWiz ROM through recovery. That way it won't overwrite your bootloader.
Never mess with a Knox infected bootloader.

Of course, when you went to 4.4, did you take the OTA? You should be sure that do you, in fact, have Knox.
If you go into download mode by holding the power+home+vol down buttons, you should no longer see a flash counter.
Rather it would read like 0x0 or 0x1.
If you don't have a Knox bootloader, then you can ODIN to an older version. Just make sure what you're flashing does not contain a Knox bootloader.

Knox for 4.4 is more resilient than for 4.3. The information at that link only applies to 4.3.

If you're on TouchWiz KitKat, whether through Odin or OTA, you've got Knox, so no doubt.
Sent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy SIII with M.O.A.R. v9.0, dkp kernel dated 3/20/2014 and TWRP v2.7.0.0.
In addition to Rode Warrior's post, once you're on the ND8 bootloader and modem, you're stuck with them. Trying to revert back to older modems/bootloaders will break the radio/hard brick.
You can still flash ROMs. That may help battery life. But, they will have to use the ND8 modem.
Also, the "Warranty Bit 1" in red text signifies that you are Knox'ed up. Join the club.

Ok yall I have a brick It was a Tmobile SGH-M919 and the rirmware was M919UVUFNB4. Question, since it only boots into download mode, not even recovery, can I change between M919UVUFN4B and M919UVUEMK2 and M919UVUAMDL?
Just wondering cause I'm trying to learn how to change an operateing system on phones
I've gotten pretty good at rooting and roms now its time to learn something new
M919UVUFN4B and M919UVUEMK2 are both knox enable firmwares. You can change between then but never go back to M919UVUAMDL. Putting on a different rom is changing the os on the phone.
Thanks. Can I simply root and remove Knox? I hate that app as much as my ex wife's cat.
Right now I have 12 hours left downloading the 4.4.2 one so after installation it will be rooted and recovery will be changed to cwm
Oh and why not go back to MDL? Is there a problem with that is or is it just incompatable?

MDL is incompatible with the boatloader, if you have installed MK2 o NB4. You can brick your phone if you downgrade to MDL.

The Knox apps and the Knox flag are 2 different things. They are both security related, but the Knox flag is what gets tripped/set if you every flash a non-stock recovery to the phone.
The Knox apps are what can be used to Shut down/wipe a phone if stolen, etc
If you have ever had the MK2 or NB4 bootloader on the phone, you now have the Knox flag. You can not go back to a bootloader that doesn't have the Knox flag. MDL bootloader doesn't have the flag, so you can't flash it once you've had MK2 or NB4.

Just FYI, the phone has multiple bits of software. The bootloader and the recovery are in their own partitions. The firmware is like device drivers under Windows, and there is the radio(s). And then there is the OS. It's made up of the kernel and the interface/apps.
When you download the stock ROM from Sammobile, you are getting a partition table, a radio, a recovery (stock), the firmware and the OS. Which is why everyone on several threads has suggested you to download and install that with ODIN. It should get you back to a working phone.
Rob
Mine trips the counter that says I have changed to a custom rom, so that means I have the knox flag right? Cause when I rooted I uninstalled and deleted the knox app, tried that once before I was rooted and wound up doing a hard reset because of that app

No, the Custom ROM flag is different than the Knox flag.
If you boot into the Bootloader, if you have a Knox bootloader, it will say the words Knox and then have a 0x0, or 0x1, next to the word Knox.
No Knox shown, you have a bootloader that doesn't have Knox.
If 0x0 shown, the the Knox counter is NOT tripped. If 0x1 is shown, then you have a Knox bootloader and the Knox flag has been tripped.

THIS IS INCORRECT! I keep seeing this all the time. THIS IS WRONG. It will NOT brick your device if you try to flash MDL firmware to a NB4 firmware. Odin will simply say "fail" and nothing will get written.
About your issue OP, you need to flash the NB4 tar file in Odin to recover from your soft brick. Then you can flash a recovery or what have you to get back to however you wish. You cannot go back to the MDL firmware after taking the MK2 or higher firmwares. The bootloader will block any attempts(as stated above).
I flashed nb4. Took me all day and night yesterday to download it, but I flashed it this morning and the spare phone is now back in its box safe and sound, I put my gmail address in it simply to make sure it worked, installed cwm recovery and chain fires root, whoever (if anybody) ends up needing it, I'll just do a factory reset and load her up again.
