So I did this a couple times now first by accident, then on purpose. If you want to go back to 4.1.2 from 4.3 all you have to do is use Odin. Flash stock 4.1.2 onto 4.3 you get an error "unsupported firmware" then put your phone back into download mode (volume down+home button+power) next flash CF-auto root. After that you can boot into recovery (volume up+home+power) in recovery format everything factory reset, format cache. Last reboot your phone it should reboot into 4.1.2 I think that is how I did it if I remember all the steps right. Feel free to ask questions I don't always explain myself very well.

So, has the 4.3 bootloader (which has KNOX) been downgraded to 4.1.2? And KNOX is removed?
What is the status of your device right now in Download Mode?

More importantly, if it has the non-Knox download mode (without the whole 0x1 tidbit), does reinstalling the OTA (which would have the Knox download mode) show 0x1 or 0x1 ??

the million dollar question.
Well to be honest I think the answer to both questions is No. In download mode after I did the ota knox bull has been there. I actually only meant to use auto root on my 4.3 but knox kept on screwing up the root and su would fc. I figured if I started over and used auto root on 4.3 right after flashing rom with odin without letting phone boot and that worked I have 4.3 rooted with su and custom recovery (cwm). So no I didn't find a way to get rid of knox completely. Just a way to go back to 4.1.2 from 4.3.

You need to update supersu when rooting on 4.3. Otherwise it will forceclose.

I'm still thinking that Knox will need to be patched/disabled during the root process (or something along those lines). Samsung claims the the fuse trigger is only capable of being triggered from 0x0 to 0x1 and not back again. So to me the answersolution probably will have to come with segregating Knox from the bootloader/system altogether. It'd be funny if devs could use Knox against itself by segregating it in the very "sandbox" it creates, if that makes sense

Any 4.1.2 stock tar or was it a specific one? also is there only one version of CF auto root?
Help please!
Hello All.. After over 5 years of flashing I think I have finally bricked my device.. I am normally great with directions and the forum however I think the latest 4.3 update got me twisted up. Odin'd back to stock and upgraded OTA. All was well.. Then I attempted Chainfire's CF auto root.. All was well and I froze on a phone call.. I battery pulled and now I get "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".. I tried to go through Kies emergency recovery and it wont accept my serial numbers.. I called t-mobile they told me I need to bring it to a smasung dealer to get "flashed"... I'm at a lost now.. One thing else is when I access download mode I see this Knox Warranty Void : 1.. Does this mean I'm done? I've been trying to read up on this knox and it seems scary to say the least.. yet nothing I read has helped me.. After hors of searching and missing the football game I decided to look to the forums.. Any help is very much appreciated. :crying:
I tried to ODIN back to stock with several .tar files (UVBMB4 and UVALJ1) it fails and shows unsupported version(in red) on the device:crying:

sir, i'm new to this forum and here's my situation:
i have a sgh-t889 t-mobile locked, stock 4.1.2 (UVBMB4) which i erroneously updated to android 4.3 via kies.
i cannot do network unlock because based on my forum searches, only android 4.1.1 can be network unlocked via the method outlined here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176721
i have odin 3.07 and have already downloaded the following roms:
1. T889UVUCMK7_T889TMBCMK7_T889UVUCMK7_HOME.tar.md5
1.68 GB (1,814,261,839 bytes) (1,771,742 KB)
2. KIES_HOME_T889UVALJ1_T889TMBALJ1_260018_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
1.25 GB (1,345,341,538 bytes) (1313811 KB)
can i reflash my sgh-t889 to 4.1.1 safely and do my own unlock?
thanks for any clarification and more power.
If you can flash back to 4.1.2 from 4.3 then you can flash back to 4.1.1 from 4.1.2. That's how I unlocked my phone.

I flashed to 4.1.1 directly and this worked. I had flashed ota 4.3 rooted the phone, then jedi X 4.3 rom and it messed up my phone bad. Would lose data all the time and massive battery drain. Now I'm back on 4.3 stock rooted.

thanks for the suggestion but the 'com' portion of odin 3.07 would not lit up and the following ROMs could not be flashed:
4.1.2 = SGH-T889_TMB_T889UVBMB4-teshxx.tar.md5
4.1.1 = KIES_HOME_T889UVALJ1_T889TMBALJ1_260018_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
the 'com' portion of odin would only lit up if the sgh-t889 is connected to the pc under usb mode. it would not lit up under download mode.
i have this other 4.1.1 ROM which i did not test yet as of this moment as i'm waiting for more information:
4.1.1 = root66_root66_TMO_T889UVALJ1.tar.md5TMO_T889UVALJ1
from kies update, i have also saved my new updated ROM:
4.3 = T889UVUCMK7_T889TMBCMK7_T889UVUCMK7_HOME.tar.md5

just for clarification, you were on stock 4.1.2, updated OTA to 4.3, then re-flashed successfully to 4.1.1 via odin, then flashed OTA 4.3?
4.1.2 to 4.3 via kies to 4.1.1 via odin to 4.3 via kies
re-reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176721
afterwards, i decided to use odin 3.07 again but this time, i used another usb cable.
i used this ROM = KIES_HOME_T889UVALJ1_T889TMBALJ1_260018_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
re-flashing to lower version via odin 3.07 was successful.
i did the unlocking trick as outlined in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176721
under android 4.1.1 settings, MODIFIED.
software update thru OTA was denied due to software modification.
successfully re-flashed to android 4.3 via odin 3.07 using this ROM = T889UVUCMK7_T889TMBCMK7_T889UVUCMK7_HOME.tar.md5
knox counter was tripped.
afaik, wifi is okay, able to browse my wifi network
i have not yet tested a non-tmo sim.

Since you already tripped the knox counter, you can flash the VALL4 tmobile modem and try the same unlock steps in the thread.
The specific modem was all that was required to unlock the t889. I unlocked on 4.1.2 only flashing the older modem and following the unlock steps.
Hi there,
I haven't been updated on rooting and all that jazz in a while, so please excuse my ignorance.
I have a Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999) on 4.1.2. It's stock rooted, but I don't have a custom Recovery or anything on it. I didn't (and don't) want to trip the root counter.
Is there a way to upgrade my phone to 4.3, have root working, and not trip the root counter? (Basically, what I currently have, except on 4.3)
Also, I Googled this new Knox feature I've seen people talk about, it seems like a lot of people here don't like it-- should I not want it on my phone too?
Happy holidays,
-Proxin
The counter is easy enough to reset if still on 4.1.2, so your best bet is to install a custom recovery through odin, then flash docholiday's 4.3 stock deknoxed rom and the new modem, and the at&t kernel for working wifi. This way you can use triangle away to reset the flash counter. If you install 4.3 with 4.3 firmware, you will not be able to root without tripping the knox counter.
Hope this helps

From what I understood back in the day when I got root, if you installed a custom recovery, you either triggered the counter or lost all your data/wiped the phone. Is that still the case?
Edit: Or was it un-tripping the counter that caused the data to wipe?
If you want 4.3 touchwiz, root, and a warranty, all at the same time, don't take the official update.
Instead, flash the 4.3 ROM zip, 4.3 modem, and a compatible kernel, using twrp or cwm recovery.
If you ever need to odin, do not use any version newer than MD5 or you are stuck with Knox and can never go back.

It still triggers the counter, but it can be reset. It did not wipe my data, but backup just in case. Resetting the counter did not wipe data either. But do not update to the official 4.3 if you want to root and still have a warranty.

To fix root, enable developer options by pressing build number 7 times, then enable root access for apps and adb under dev options.
MJC is TW 4.3 which includes knox. AFAIK the root66 version has knox removed from the rom, but it is impossible to remove it from the bootloader.

Do I have to re-root somehow? If so, will that throw off the counter?

I don't understand-- it seems like it says Knox is removed in order for root to stick:
4.3 Image Notes: With 4.3 images, KNOX is removed in order for root to stick. This will flag the Knox counter. Once you flash one of these 4.3 images you now have the latest factory stock bootloader, radio, etc. Flashing a prior bootloader can hard/soft brick your device. Please read and understand what you are doing.

I took it to mean root will flag the Knox counter so it has been removed from the images.
The wording is very ambiguous...
I'm pretty close to just nuking my install and starting over with CyanogenMod, not caring if I trip the counter or not. Is it possible to do so with the current setup, or will I end up with a brick/semibrick somehow? I figure I might as well, since rooting will likely trip the counter anyway.

Yes, I could have been worded better. You can flash other
ROMs but make sure they don't include an older bootloader or your device will brick from what I understand.

You did trip the Knox counter.
Just so anyone else reading this thread knows, if you value your warranty DO NOT UPDATE TO 4.3 VIA ODIN . Instead, flash the 4.3 rom , kernel, and modem zips in CWM or TWRP recovery.
Do not Odin MJC (or MK4 for you T999L people) if you want root and warranty, as once you are on the Knox boot loader you can't go back.

One of the things that bugs me about forums, finding information is a pain the butt. I just want to get my device back to stock so I can get OTA updates, GPS doesn't suck, and can use Wifi. I don't care about root anymore or using custom roms. I'm learning Objective C right now to branch into iOS development. I'm sick of the Android ecosystem, to be frank.
I'm on Wicked Rom with Android v4.1.1
Baseband T999UVDMD5, Kernal 3.0.65-DeviantKernel_07
I'm downloading T999UVUEMJC_T999TMBEMJC_TMB.zip right now, along with root66_TMO_T999UVUEMJC_2.7z
Which one do I need to flash? if root66 gives me root, then cool I'll take it, but as I said, I don't care. I'll be using Mobile Odin since I'm on a mac and I sold my PC. If I need to install Windows via bootcamp then so be it, but I really don't want to.
If I need to update the rom, kernel, modem, etc all separately where do I find those files? *scratches head*
I am looking to update my bootloader to the 4.3 Bootloader, but it seems there is no firmware-only zip/tar. I have found of course the one-click full restore which brings you to all the newest firmware bits, but this wipes your internal storage, and do not want to do a copy+paste + copy back. Could anyone point me to a firmware-only update to MK4? Or at least just the MK4 bootloader, as all else is updated.
Lol the internal storage copy wasnt as long as expected . Just doing the one-click now. Thanks anyway [email protected]
Yeah so far there is not a firmware only upgrade. Most likely won't be one since most don't want any kind of Knox on their phone.

Oddly enough, after doing the odin 1 click. It did not erase my internal... It boot up, my background was the same, apps were still there (didnt sign in to Google cuz it was still signed in), checked settings and everything is MK4, and Odin log shows all Success, no failures, 100% pass. Lel?
I noticed the other Note 2 variants have flashable 4.3 bootloaders without Knox..wonder why L900 users got left out
Huh? Which phones got 4.3 bootloaders without KNOX? I thought for SURE that every 4.3 bootloader contains KNOX and no one's figured out how to strip it out?
If anyone wants the 4.3 bootloader WITH KNOX (AGAIN...WITH WITH WITH KNOX, NOT WITHOUT) I'll strip it out of the MK4 tarball, package it up and host it tomorrow.

EDIT: Here it is: https://www.mediafire.com/?advn74f40k25cjx I'm pretty sure the bootloader only contains sboot.bin and tz.img for the L900 on MK4. IIRC, boot.img is part of the application package, not the bootloader package (I may be wrong...?)

M919UVUFN4B and M919UVUEMK2 are both knox enable firmwares. You can change between then but never go back to M919UVUAMDL. Putting on a different rom is changing the os on the phone.
Thanks. Can I simply root and remove Knox? I hate that app as much as my ex wife's cat.
Right now I have 12 hours left downloading the 4.4.2 one so after installation it will be rooted and recovery will be changed to cwm
Oh and why not go back to MDL? Is there a problem with that is or is it just incompatable?

MDL is incompatible with the boatloader, if you have installed MK2 o NB4. You can brick your phone if you downgrade to MDL.

The Knox apps and the Knox flag are 2 different things. They are both security related, but the Knox flag is what gets tripped/set if you every flash a non-stock recovery to the phone.
The Knox apps are what can be used to Shut down/wipe a phone if stolen, etc
If you have ever had the MK2 or NB4 bootloader on the phone, you now have the Knox flag. You can not go back to a bootloader that doesn't have the Knox flag. MDL bootloader doesn't have the flag, so you can't flash it once you've had MK2 or NB4.

Just FYI, the phone has multiple bits of software. The bootloader and the recovery are in their own partitions. The firmware is like device drivers under Windows, and there is the radio(s). And then there is the OS. It's made up of the kernel and the interface/apps.
When you download the stock ROM from Sammobile, you are getting a partition table, a radio, a recovery (stock), the firmware and the OS. Which is why everyone on several threads has suggested you to download and install that with ODIN. It should get you back to a working phone.

Mine trips the counter that says I have changed to a custom rom, so that means I have the knox flag right? Cause when I rooted I uninstalled and deleted the knox app, tried that once before I was rooted and wound up doing a hard reset because of that app

No, the Custom ROM flag is different than the Knox flag.
If you boot into the Bootloader, if you have a Knox bootloader, it will say the words Knox and then have a 0x0, or 0x1, next to the word Knox.
No Knox shown, you have a bootloader that doesn't have Knox.
If 0x0 shown, the the Knox counter is NOT tripped. If 0x1 is shown, then you have a Knox bootloader and the Knox flag has been tripped.

MDL is incompatible with the boatloader, if you have installed MK2 o NB4. You can brick your phone if you downgrade to MDL.

THIS IS INCORRECT! I keep seeing this all the time. THIS IS WRONG. It will NOT brick your device if you try to flash MDL firmware to a NB4 firmware. Odin will simply say "fail" and nothing will get written.
About your issue OP, you need to flash the NB4 tar file in Odin to recover from your soft brick. Then you can flash a recovery or what have you to get back to however you wish. You cannot go back to the MDL firmware after taking the MK2 or higher firmwares. The bootloader will block any attempts(as stated above).
I flashed nb4. Took me all day and night yesterday to download it, but I flashed it this morning and the spare phone is now back in its box safe and sound, I put my gmail address in it simply to make sure it worked, installed cwm recovery and chain fires root, whoever (if anybody) ends up needing it, I'll just do a factory reset and load her up again.

i actually used shiamatsu's method of going from the MDL modem to the NB4 modem.
so i cannot revert back to the MDL modem even if i were to flash the MDL modem via odin?
i cannot revert back to older modems via odin if i were to say flash an international modem like the XXUFNB8 or XXUFNB9 modem for the I9505?
can i flash those international modems on my t-mo s 4 to fix wifi issues i'm having?

Modems you can. But thats not whats posted. If you flash full nb4 firmware with its bootloader. You can not downgrade.
i9505 modems you can't flash. They'll be rejected and fail. Ive actually forced them to flash and lost all service.

I flashed the C-Rom found in one of the threads on this forum for the t-mo s 4.
However, my wifi is now wonky and it doesn't log into or accept my wifi login details or allow me to connect to wifi
so i was thinking since it is an international rom, i might try to flash an international modem to try and fix the wi fi issue.

Thanks, excellent!!:good:
I have this thread bookmarked on my computer, but I'm lijrc5 miles away right getting firewood and I gave a question. My s4 is running 4.3, would I screw it up if I flashed one of those 4.4s on it? It IS rooted, fully, not just the jf root process, and I'm running evil rom v10.

Na not at all. Doesn't matter what you're running, will erase all of whatever rom youre running and install the firmware. Recovery, roms, kernels, etc dont matter at all. You may have to wipe data and cache in recovery after you flash it for it to boot tho which is common no matter what you're running.

About the know counter, my first s4 with TMobile got broke and replaced, and they didn't even bother checking the counter, when I first went with T Mobile even asked, they said if I rooted the phone it voided the software warranty and the phones software was my responsibility..........uh..........OK... I can live with that, especially when it means I have full control and my choice of roms and apps
