recent problem...everytime I reboot i get this message android is upgrading optimizing apps. Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 running 4.3 JSS15J.I747UCUEMJB. How can I fix it, or even wipe it and start out from a factory state. I did restore from "Backup and Restore" that didn't change anything except wipe out apps.
This normally happens when dalvik cache is getting rebuilt.
yes but why is it rebuilt every reboot?

Maybe you have to fix permissions?

Tried that via Rom Manager already

I installed ezterry's kernel on my rooted/unlocked a100 (stock ICS) and now every time I restart, I get a message that Google is upgrading before I get to my home screen. It's a minor quirk, just wondering if there's a way to stop it from doing that. I've tried wiping the gapps data via the settings menu, titanium backup, and cleared cache/dalvik in recovery, no dice.

This would do better in his release thread....but anyways it usually subsides on its own. Reboot it a couple times in a row without installing any apps.
You can also clear cache and dalvik in recovery, which should be done every flash anyways, it will force it again then should stop unless its needed again.

Sorry, I tried posting there, but I realized I'm still categorized as a new user (I'm mostly a lurker). And thanks, I'll try your suggestion! :fingers-crossed:

Okay, I rebooted into recovery and cleared cache/dalvik again, then did a full reboot 5 times (I let it set a few minutes between each reboot). Still keeps saying "Android is upgrading". Any other suggestions?

You could restore the stock kernel and see if it goes away, then try to reinstall ez's kernel.
I've seen the kernel cause this before when I was doing his test builds, it always eventually subsided on it's own over a couple of days, other then being a longer boot time it doesn't cause any adverse issues.
If you have a backup from CWM or TWRP, what he's referring to is an advanced restore:
CWM: (this is from memory)
Go to back/restore
go to backup
go to advanced backup (it may be in the same menu as backup)
uncheck everything except Boot, don't restore anything else
restore
clear cache /dalvik cache
reboot
TWRP:
Go to restore
uncheck everything except Boot
restore
clear cache / dalvik cache
reboot
I'll give it a couple days to see if it subsides on its own and then try the recovery if it doesn't. Thanks for the help, guys! :good:
I have 6.1.A.2.45 version of ICS on my Xperia S and my question is that every time I start off the phone after I get a notice saying: Updating android: Optimizing # of applications ... This always happens to me each to start the phone. and it's annoying because it takes longer to start.
I have the phone rooted with CWM v2 for locked bootloaders
Its a bug, just factory reset if it bothers you.
Its a root, cwm or rom bug?
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
It depends on what have you flasged, moded lately. It is occurring at specific mods....
Hit Thanks if I helped
Its very strange because i only install the root and CWM, Nothing else more.

I noticed my phone did that when i "cleaned the dalvik cache" using titanium backup as the sony roms seem to create a 0kb file in the dalvik cache folder which tells the phone to to not rebuild the cache.

wait you optimizing them.........the system optimizes them on its own as if freshly installed
yeah it is annoying the more apps you have the more it takes times
I am noob at Linux distros but it seems like the prefetch file used in windows(cannt be sure about this )
you dont have to clear dalvink cache daily just do it when you find your phone laggy or heavy like you do with battery status when you find your battery life is not as it supposed to be

I have official stock ICS and kernel just rooted and installed cwm v2
and whenever i clean dalvik cache it re-optimizes application
there is a definition about dalvik cache on wiki search it on google since i still cannt post the link
so dont worry and this is not a bug this optimization is in all roms base on 4.x.x versions as far as i know
it is a bit annoying i know but cannt do anything about it i guess
So here's the problem...
Just installed the 4.4 update and when my tablet booted I used an app called "Whatsapp" just fine...
Then I went ahead and changed to ART from dalvik .... When the tab rebooted Whatsapp would just force close...
So I tired uninstall and re-install ...but it wouldn't install again ("app not installed")
Tried switching back to dalvik ...still no use...
Any ideas ??

Try clearing cache/dalvik-cache in custom recovery.

In case you want to use 'WhatsApp' without rooting/flashing your device the only option is to 'Factory reset' your phone.
But if you are open to to flash the device, follow this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2527879

Which version of GApps did you install? Have you tried rebooting into recovery mode and clearing the Cache and Dalvik Cache? Also, did you do a factory reset before flashing ThunderROM?

No GAPPs needed for thunderom. I tried the rom before and had no crashes. Probably the way he installed it?

Did you have Submitted installed and forgot to uninstall the overlays? Also did you full wipe or at the very least wipe Dalvik and Cache?

Do I have to uninstall substratum themes? Yes I didn't do that, but I did wipe caches. Do I have to wipe system as well?

You need to remove all Substratum themes/overlays or you'll likely have problems. Completely uninstall the overlays if you haven't already and do so I'm the future. It's easy to forget but you need to get into the habit of doing so before you update your OS.
Doesn't happen all the time in my experience but can cause problems like yours often enough.

It's always a good idea to start from scratch if you have problems but if for whatever reason that's not ideal then in TWRP tap install and scroll down to the substratum folder and select "SubstratumRescue.zip". Flash that and it will allow to to boot up again.
