[Q] Connecting S4 mini to Windows PC via USB - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
I'm quite new to Android and recently got a new Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. I had a 32GB micro SD card on my previous phone, so that's in there too, and when I first used the S4 mini, I connected it to my Windows laptop using the USB cable that came with the device. I was able to explore all the files on the phone and SD card and moved across some image files, music files, etc.
However, now when I do the same (connect the device to my laptop using the USB cable) it will not allow me to explore the files on the device - instead, it shows up as a portable music player with no files visible.
I don't know why it's doing this - and I can't figure out what has changed, or how to change it back. I've tried looking for an option on the Settings of the device but I can't find anything.
Does anyone know of a way I can revert to the previous situation and plug my phone into my laptop so I can manually transfer across some more files?
Thanks!

Sometimes when your phone's locked, it doesn't connect. Try unlocking it after you connect. If that doesn't work try enabling 'USB Debugging' in Developer Settings. :cyclops:

Update for 4.0.4 power saving and USB problems

I've had this Sprint Galaxy S II phone for about two or three weeks, and it just updated to 4.0.4. The only problems I am having are these:
1. power saving is set to come on at 50%, but it doesn't. Lately, I have been home and have been able to charge it or happened to look at it when it was just below 50%. If I go into the settings and manually uncheck and check it again, it turns on power saving. Any way to fix this?
2. I've never messed with the SD card yet. The card is the same as my old phone's, so there's stuff on it I can't delete. Anyway, I think they changed the way this connected to PCs because the old image of Andru on the screen is gone. So, now when I connect it, my computer thinks it's a camera. If the icons are in tile view, it won't show you the folder or file names. And it won't let me paste music (only thing I'm trying to do) onto the SD card. Now, FYI, my fiance just reinstalled my OS (XP) because of some computer problems I was having, so maybe there's some XP update I need for this to connect to the PC. If I can connect the card to the computer without the phone, I'll try that, but I don't know how.
I'm not sure about the power saving mode, but I ran into the issue with the sd card. I fixed it by installing the Samsung drivers (which can be found by a quick Google search, or by searching these forums) and turned on mass storage mode. I'm running xp as well and it shows up under removable storage F: & G: in the my computer folder. Hope this helps

How do you turn on mass storage mode? The Sprint guy had me download the drivers, but the device wasn't recognized by the PC when I did. I then got SP 3 for Windows, but I haven't noticed any difference, so I am not sure if there's something else my computer is missing.
When you connect the phone a us icon shows in the status bar, swipe down and touch the notification then it will allow you to turn it on.

I called Sprint today because I was still having this issue with the SD card, and they told me that since I was using Windows XP, I would never be able to see the SD card because it was too old an OS. I can't find anything online I should download, so I thought I'd check here again to see if there was a way around this. I figured if anyone would know, it would be the people on this forum.
P.S. I am still having the power saving mode issue but forgot to ask them about that.

lolwat? XP may be old, but not old enough to still support USB mass.
ICS uses a new USB setup for connecting using MTP, and another older mode I don't remember the letters for offhand. XP should read MTP but not the other, but you typically need Samsung drivers for either. Market has an app, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.zatta.USB_switch USB Switcher that will change the USB mode from MTP to mass, after rebooting your phone. Works on my E4GT, so presumably it might for yours. Hope that helps.
Edit: It is possible though for certain size cards to not be read by XP depending on certain settings or hardware, I dunno if that's what they meant by that, I assumed you meant connecting to the card via USB on the phone. If I got that wrong my apologies, hope this helps regardless.
I'm not sure how big my SD card is as the fiance gave it to me, and I don't recall. He is the computer expert around here, so I don't pay much attention to what he does to the computers, etc. Yes, dear, whatever you say dear. Dual core, 80 Gig, micro SD card reader...if he wants me to use it, I trust that it's good. He actually told me that he bought extra licenses for Win 7, so we could install it on my computer, but I am not a fan of how Win 7 programs are organized differently from their older versions. (I may be thinking of 2010 Office Suite and just lumping that in with 7). So, I told him maybe in two years I'd upgrade to 7. For now I'll just transfer the files between two computers with a flash drive.
I KNEW this was an ICS thing. Even though I had the phone for less than a month before the update and didn't remember plugging it into the computer before then. My phone does prompt file transfer for MTP and whatever acronym they use for pictures. And I'm like, fine, I'll deal with that, but when I try to use the programs suggested to transfer files, the programs freeze or don't recognize the phone as a device plugged in. It's a crapshoot. And I figure if they went through all the trouble of doing this media/photo file transfer thing for XP, why didn't they just use a little more effort to make the SD card contents visible?
So...unless a third party develops something that will provide SD card content viewing and editing, I will just go the long route and move files from my PC to a flash drive to the Win 7 PC to the phone.

[Q] USB Mass storage options no longer work after root

Okay, So I am a pretty new user of android. However I am a technically minded person and used to jailbreak my iPhone all the time. I decided to go for a while without rooting my Galaxy note II to see what the experience was like without root. However I found that I came across the need to root for certain apps. So Using a Windows PC I rooted with Odin. Now, on My mac, I can no longer connect to samsung Kies, no software on my mac will see the phone. I remember that plugging in my device would usually show usb options in the notification bar and i could select media or mass storage. But now my device acts as if it's only charging and not connected to my mac. I'm not sure what went wrong but I have been rooted for about 5 hours and it went pretty smoothly. So I really don't see why my phone will no longer mount to my mac as storage to enable me to use samsung kies.
Any help is really appreciated.
The only other info I can think of giving is that I'm running OS X 10.8.2.
Try googling for "SGS3 Easy UMS". It will load your SD card as an external drive and should work on the Mac.
This won't help for Kies though. Never used it and probably never will. It's dreadful.
Keith
Unfortunately, mass storage was removed by Samsung in s3 and note 2. Your root has nothing to do with it.
Also I'm not sure why you would need Kies, which is a terrible piece of software. Assuming you know how to root your phone using odin, you should know how to flash firmware using it as well.

Am i missig something here? when i plug my phone to my pc it is automatically recognized [able to transfer files] without even needing to turn on usb storage on through the taskbar.
Of course you're still able to transfer files regularly back and forth from and to the PC, just on an MTP connection, not mass storage.
RESOLVED!
Okay, Maybe I had my terminology a Little wrong. But I still managed to correct the problem. The issue was that my mac was not seeing the phone at all because the USB Settings in PhoneUtil accessed by dialing *#7284# in the phones keypad, was set to Modem rather than PDA. Many thanks for your suggestions though. I hope this may help someone in the future.

[Q] Issues connecting Note 2 to PC

Hi guys, was hoping someone on the forums was able to help me out with an issue I am having with my Note 2. I am a first time android user so I might be doing something wrong. Whenever I connect my note 2 to my computer, it gives me a pop up message on my phone.
"Unable to find software on your PC that can recognize your device. Service pack 3, Windows Media Player, version 10 or higher, for Windows XP or Android File Transfer for Mac OS must be Installed."
After getting this message I went to update everything on my computer. I am current on my Service Pack and I downloaded Windows media player 11. I also downloaded Kies on my computer and still, my PC doesnt recognize my phone.
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue? Also, do I need to have a micro SD card to be able to connect to my PC?
I believe right now the pc is trying to read from your device's internal memory but it doesn't have the proper drivers installed.
If you had a micro sd, it would just show up in your file explorer as readable media that you can transfer files to and from.
Sounds to me like you just need proper drivers installed and then you can do the same with your internal storage.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for your reply. I guess I should just pick up a micro sd card and then try it out again. Thanks again for your help.
No problem. If your browse the developer forum or do a search, I'm sure you could dig up the drivers somewhere. I'm honestly surprised that this device didn't include a disc to install proper drivers.

i to had this same problem, it wouldn't recognize the phone so i had to install and uninstall the samsung drivers 10 times for it to finally see the phone and SD card. after hours of frustration i think i found the issue. uninstall any USB drivers windows may have installed when u connected the phone and go get the installer from samsung. while in the settings menu on the phone under the developer section at the bottom make sure USB Debugging is turned off. then install the drivers plug the phone in after and let windows do its thing and bam ur done. full access to internal drive and SD if u have one installed
Had the same problem and finally found the solution on another forum site. There is a hidden setting that switches USB connectivity between USB Mass Storage and Samsung Kies. The only way to get to the setting is to create a shortcut on the Home screen as follows:
1. Press and hold an empty spot on the Home screen.
2. Choose Shortcuts
3. Choose Activities
4. Scroll down and choose USB Settings
Using the new shortcut you can now switch to Mass Storage mode and your phone will be recognized as a hard drive (even though Windows says it is a Portable Media player). Just double click on it in Explorer and you have access to both the internal memory and the SD card.

How do you press and hold an empty spot on Note 2?
Because for my Note 2, when I press and hold the Home Screen, it will pop up with a box that you only can choose set wallpaper, apps and widgets or folder. SO how to choose shortcuts? Because it is not there?
Please help me. TQ

You can do that by installing a different launcher, for example nova launcher free version. Hope this method might work for you. But did not work on my note 2. I am also still looking for answer.
I'm having the same issue as you...and have tried everything as well...and am about to pull my hair out getting this to work.
The MSS install wizard is bogging down and is taking hours to install this for some reason...I am wondering if Samsung has borked this completely for Vista /XP..
I am open for suggestions
Mac
I've noticed Windows is not able to find the driver for it.
Try downloading the OEM USB driver from Samsung: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I317TSAATT
Disconnect the phone
Install the driver
Connect the phone
Let Windows look and install subsequent updates since the OEM version

I have the same issue and receive the same error message. But only on my Windows XP computers. All my Windows 7 computers work perfectly, but my 64gb SD card connects as a media device, instead of a mass storage device which I could assign a drive letter in XP>
I have tried installing Samsung's USB driver numerous times with no results.
So has anyone found a real solution to connecting a Note 2 SD card to an XP computer as a mass storage device just like any other cell phone I have ever had?

I am also having the identical problem. The Note 2 will not connect to any of the three computers I've tried regardless of the settings I've messed with. It used to connect fine and I'm not sure what happened, but now it just charges and registers nothing on the connected PC. Help.
Usb mass storage mode is pretty much gone at this point. Somewhere someone had the wisdom we only need ptp and mtp. I saw an app in the store that will mount external sd as ums. But that doesn't seem to help with the internal, nor do I know if it translates ext4 into something windows can read. :/

So what is the trick if this has been ticked the whole time but still won't show up? I've glot CM 10.2, MTP is checked, when plugged in the laptop it shows up at the bottom on the task bar & then when I right click it says Nexus 7.
My device shows up under devices & printers, but not under computer when clicking the start menu on the PC & clicking computer. My HDD, DVD drive & SD card all show up, but no N7 so I can't transfer files.
Am I missing something else?

Please elaborate a bit. What I understood is :
Nexus 7 doesnot show up like an SD card etc but as a mobile device yet you can not transfer stuff ?
It doesnot show up like a drive. For me, on Windows 7, it shows up like a mobile device in other devices with the name "Nexus 7". If i click it , I get into the internal memory. You can not rename folders or transfer files within Nexus(as it is used by the Nexus itself so it can not be changed). However, try copy a file from PC to your nexus. Does that work? If yes, that is perfectly normal. Use a file explorer like ES file explorer to rename and transfer files within Nexus. But Es file explorer has some bugs with JB 4.3 esp with extracting a rar file.
If this doesnot solve it, I remember there was also some settings for it. I can not remember though as I havenot used the latest CM 10.2.

So the first picture is of devices. You can see the N7 is shown, but clicking it only takes me to the info about the device. No way to transfer stuff. Right clicking gives me eject, troubleshoot, properties.
The second is the windows section where it shows the HDD, etc. No N7. I was expecting it to show up to be able to transfer files from computer to the device as in a mass storage device. I did this with the last one where I could see everything on the device.
I have a 600mb file I want to transfer to the tablet & was expecting to just copy it over.

I am attaching my pictures how I see my nexus when it is connected. You do not see Nexus 7 if it is not connected properly or not enabled from Nexus settings.
Does your device charge when you connect to the PC ?
Does your device connect in USB debugging mode ?
Further, go into device manager in My computers and see if there are any question marks on any device? Make sure your device is connected at that time.
Try to connect it to different port or without USB hub if you are using as sometimes, devices do not show up.
Moreover, try to connect your device to the PC and then tick on MTP and then change few options like connect via different methods and see if any usb connection is seen ?
Also, close all other mobile softwares in the background and taskbar (Kies, Sony PC companion, LG, Nokia PC suit) and then try connecting it.
They are many a times culprits. Even try uninstalling their drivers and programmes.
IF USB DEBBUGGING WORKS AND CHARGING, DRIVERS ARE PERFECTLY INSTALLED IN THE PC
YOUR PROBLEM SEEMS TO ME FROM NEXUS SETTINGS.
IT SIMPLY COULD BE A BUG AS CM is still nightly
I hope this helps

May be a CM bug. I just connected my Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.2 AOKP & I just transferred files from my phone to computer.
The N7 is connected, charging, debugging works, etc. So i'll keep waiting to see what the deal is with each new CM install.
I do appreciate all of the suggestions. Should have tested it on CleanRom before flashing CM to see if it was working then.
I am having the same problem with cleanrom

Transfer Files from PC

I've been trying to transfer the files I took from my Galaxy S4 and saved them to my computer, to my G3. When I connect the G3 to my computer, I only see 2 files in the "Internal Storage". It won't recognize my SD Card either. Is there a setting I may be missing, that will allow me to see other folders? I can't copy and paste anything to my Internal Storage. Thanks for your help.

Hmmm...I tried to upload the pics from my desktop and I get this message. "Failed to upload. No write permission on sd card."
I have to turn on the camera mode for it to transfer. It won't recognize anything in MTP mode. :/
I wish I could do all this without using AirDroid. It won't show the phone in MTP, but in PTP it will, but only 2 folders on the whole phone, no sdcard. And I can't directly put anything on the phone.
I had a problem with my D855 MTP mode as well. Folders are all there, but some files are either missing, or reduced in size. I cannot copy them out to PC. In these folders, I also cannot copy files into them. What I did to resolve the problem, is to reboot the phone with USB cable attached to the PC. Then, before the phone can complete its boot up sequence, I will have some time to copy the files in and out. It is really quite troublesome.
MTP troubles?
This is what's worked for me (D850/at&t):
Install LG United Mobile driver for ADB support
Enable USB debugging in developer options on phone
Verify MTP mode is selected
Connect USB and accept RSA signature on phone
I know that ADB isn't particularly necessary for MTP, but in my experience with roms on the old Nexus (for which I used Google's ADB driver), it was a sure bet every time. gl
