Hi i have been given a samsung galaxy note 2 but it is a demo from samsung. It has everything in it but it doesnt have an imei and doesnt register to a network. It has a sim slot but it doesnt pick up network. If i type *#06# it says imei null. Also another thing i noticed is that it has no baseband version. It keeps loading retail mode from samsung all the time however i have managed to get rid of it. Is there a way to flash it with different firmware to get sorted. I am not an expert so if someone can guide me step by step that will be great.

There's nothing fishy about his story. Samsung demo units only contain WiFi connectivity options to discourage theft and resale.

Its not fishy it has been given to me by samsung for demo in mobile stores in uk. It does connect to wifi as someone mentioned its just it dont pick sim cards probably because samsung blocked it. As i got a sim with unlimited data i want to use it and get rid of my dongle and laptop.

Since samsung supplied it (in your words) for demo in mobile stores in uk I doubt they would be particularly pleased with it being supplied with an imei (which is TOTALLY dodgy to me) for personal use when it was never intended for that!
Sorry dude but it does sound fishy.
No manufacturer would be pleased to install custom roms too..... So solution please if you have any?

I would not flash anything if you have these issues right from the get go, take it back to place of purchase and or call your carrier. Demo is just that Demo...

Hello Guys,
Strange problem here, I am a simple mobile customer, using a Samsung Galaxy S3 ( Unlocked , rooted and have custom rom ). The phone was working perfect until 8 am yesterday! I didnt do any changes , all of a sudden the phone will not register to the Simple network.
However, the sim works fine with an S2! AT&T sim works fine with my S3 also! So i can't figure out what the problem is !!!
Thanks,
Joe.

Simple mobile user here. Works fine for me. maybe restart phone? check the network setting, maybe it routed to different carrier.
Might be blacklisted? Try to do a complete wipe and reinstall the system.

Sounds like it was blacklisted.
I was wondering if blacklists apply to MVNOs. Like the case in point, will a phone blocked on T-Mobile work on Simple Mobile even though Simple uses Tmobile network.
As of 31 October 2012, the U.S. Cellular Providers are sharing IMEI/ESN data to ensure that phones blacklisted on one carrier CANNOT be activated on another carrier. T-Mobile and AT&T are also tied into the international GSM IMEI Blacklist Database to ensure that phones blacklisted overseas cannot be activated in the U.S. and vice-versa.

Is there anyway to protect yourself while buying a used phone off of ebay/craigslist to make sure the phone is not reported stolen later?
Thanks
Meet them at a service store if using craigslist for a rep to check the status.

Sounds like the imei is blacklisted likely stolen phone. I always buy phones online and ask that they have the original box so I can avoid this.
The phone was bought new though! I have the box and everything and it did work on simple mobile for about month and a half! the phone is rooted and flashed multiple roms but no luck!

Go into settings and see if the imei still shows up? Sometimes the IMEI is lost while flashing roms. This would not allow the phone to get service. Was this after you flashed a rom?
I'm having the same problem! Except it stopped working around Friday which was December 14th. I've tried to troubleshoot this myself and the only thing I can come up with is that it's because I unlocked my phone. I got this phone brand new mid october and I've been using simple mobile with it since. Then last week I used that free unlock for Galaxy S3's and Note 2's via dialing the code in and going to the the network lock and switching it off. Last Tuesday, I tested it with an AT&T sim to confirm it was unlocked as I needed it for use in Japan and it worked fine. Then it suddenly stopped working last Friday.
Here are the things I've done:
1) Attempted to use a T-Mobile/AT&T SIM in my phone to confirm that my phone works and isn't "blacklisted" I've called and texted with those sims.
2) I put my simple mobile SIM into another T999 Galaxy S3 and it worked fine without setting up APN settings. I received my texts and voicemails as soon as the SIM was in. The only difference between my phone and that phone is that I unlocked mine and my friend left his locked It was the same model phone, the T999 T-Mobile version of the S3.
3) I've called up CS for Simple Mobile and they've went through all their "troubleshooting tools" and even called up their tech support with T-Mobile to confirm that my phone is getting coverage. The interesting thing that they kept telling me that is on their system and T-Mobile's systems, they see my phone as connected and idling which means I should be getting service.
4 and 5) I've factory reset my phone and bought a new sim card and did a sim swap and still no go.
And yes, if I type *#06#, I get my IMEI so I don't think my IMEI is "lost" unless there is another way to check. I've looked elsewhere for the solution and this is the only post where I found someone having the same exact problem as me.
The method I used for the unlock is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34661189&postcount=1
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Phone probably blacklisted. Go to check esn free website. On the dropdown box look for the blacklisted imei and enter yours to see if it is in their system. You can also try calling T-Mobile.

Hello All,
I am having an issue where I am unable to get any data on my Unlocked TMobile Samsung Note II. I am currently using a ATT One X+ and get full bars of LTE service in my area, while I understand I will not be able to get LTE service on the device, I cannot get any data. The default APN on the phone was Cingular 410, I've also attempted to create a new APN mirroring the exact settings on my HTC One X+. I've reflashed the stock OS and bootloader and issue persists.
I've done some searching and found one similar issue, I am currently using a NANO LTE slim from my ATT iPhone 5 with a nano to micro converter. The post I found said the user had some issue doing this as well and went to ATT for a LTE Micro SIM and his issue was solved. I'm not sure how this would make a difference since the Nano to Micro works just fine in my ATT One X+.
I was under the impression from what I read online I would just need to pop in my ATT LTE sim into the Unlocked TMobile Note II and be on my way with any data lower than LTE. I have also verified I am successfully able to make calls with the ATT sim inserted into the Unlocked TMobile Note II
Any insight would be beneficial? Thanks!
Did you change the apn?

You need to do some work, but im pretty sure everything can be back up and running, another user was able to restore the blown efs/nv/modem on a messed up GNII, once he had that working, even injected a Behold imei onto the phone and get full service...
Search the forum for the thread, ill try to find it and post it here for ya
Edit: here is what the guy did... the links he refers you to should show you all the steps you need to do... hopefully this helps....
"Here is what i had... i lost my note and got a replacement.. then i found my note in my girls car.. no service i insert my sim no service my imei was blacklisted. so i googled ways to change my imei. no dice the terminal emulator way didnt work. i said i got a paper weight and i can **** with it so i did.. got in the service mode *#197328640# and toyed with everything in there.. lost all the network setting and signal and in the
umts /debugmode /common/ rebuild nv it said it will delete my efs part. so i did haha lost my imei bootloader serial number and everything that makes my note a phone. a few days later i was at it again but this time i was going to fix it hoorah! so read and read bout efs part and googled some more and more.. and found this..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997
what i did was backed up my new notes efs/ nv files and used them in my other note.. now i have 2 notes with same serial number and imei i gave one to my wife and both are working like new.. but having 2 phones on same family plan with same ime/sderial numberi just wont cut it. so i decided to change the imei and foud this....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804123
the old imei is bad and wont work so i need a different one.. lucky i had a old samsung behold2 laying around the house .. turned it *#06# a new imei!! yay now i dont have a clone phone but more of Frankenstein monster.. cool huh when i log in to my tmo account it says samsung behold on the other line,,
this is for educational purposes only goddamit "

Hi guys I had flashed hellybean on my n7100 (UK phone on orange network) 2 weeks ago and then stupidly without thinking flashed an add-on which wasn't compatible with the rom. Unfortunately it corrupted my imei or I did something wrong when flashing various bits. I can confirm the rom was working brilliant until I started playing around with it. I cannot remember which add-on I flashed as I tried a couple of different kernels as well before I noticed what had happened. I didn't have a backup of my imei stupid me... (it changed the imei to the fake 004 number) as assumed from reading other posts and help topics I didn't have any service or network coverage. After a few days of trying my hardest to find a solution I had to give up and give into a warranty repair. So I reverted back to stock while using Triangle Away and Odin to put my correct regional stock non rooted rom into XXDMB2 and sent it back to Samsung.
Now they have cancelled the repair and are sending it back to me with broken imei no explanation given just cancelled and returning the phone.
Question is when it has been returned is there anyway I can inject the imei like the U.S. qualcomm version? (I know UK based n7100 doesn't have the qualcomm chip before anyone rips into me about it) I'm completely out of my depth with this one and I am assuming I have ruined my note 2 forever.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Already been there thanks anyway I received an email from him, I read his post via a link he sent to me here on XDA and he cannot do it as it didn't work according to the testing he carried out quite recently.
Now I am totally lost and clueless, shall I just accept Ive killed my note 2 (as a phone anyway) through my lack of common sense by not backing up the efs
I have been searching but there is no solution to my problem that I can find anyway.
How have other users overcome this problem assuming they have managed to fix/inject/restore their imei number?
Demand answer for what reason they are cancelling the warranty repair and or try to force them if you can. Go to citizens advie borough and get documents with regards to consumer rights etc. If they think you ll give them a headache they might just get it done just to avoid issues. Ask your local paper to publish an article about it. Its all to do with how much you wanna push. Worst scenerio get them to repair it and pay the bill

So the story unfolds as to why it has been cancelled, the screen has been cracked in transit to the service centre aaarrrrggggghhhhh. They have quoted me £138 for the repair of the screen before they look at the imei fault. So in having it returned and putting a claim in through my insurance absolute nightmare this is cannot believe this has happened. Thanks for the replies anyway.
Get insurance then get imei fixed

Are you sure it is the N7100? - Orange UK provide the N7105 AFAIK (That's what they sent me anyway!)
If it is the LTE version (The N7105) then your missing IMEI number is most likely due to having a Kernel for a N7100 installed. This is exactly what happened to me - took me hours to find and download the legit firmware for EE to flash with Odin - If you need it, let me know and I will upload it somewhere for you!

hi there, i have an sgh-m919 which is 4months old. it worked fine for the first 3 then one night without warning, the cell-signal indicator turned into a circle with a line through it, indicating no carrier.
did some looking, seems that the imei is now reading as unknown (i did not try to root or do anything to it for this to occur). this is not a stolen device and the people i bought it from can't help.
after perusing your excellent help/forums, i tried rooting, reflashing stock tmobile, triangle-away, u name it, same result- imei unknown, circle with line through it.
i am wondering if i have a hardware fault which is causing this because of the many things i have tried, none seem to change this one issue. Note that when i press the codes to go into service mode, the screen shows a blank service mode, as opposed to a menu which is what is supposed to be there. So i am really puzzled if this is a hardware fault which is disallowing the drivers or whatever to initialise?
my question is- is there some diagnostic i can run which will interrogate the hardware and report if there is a failure? i would like to keep the phone stock samsung tmobile as opposed to rooting etc.
any assistance would be appreciated
thanks

Did you buy it from a store? If so take it back to the store and demand they give you a new one.
Did you buy it from a person selling it second hand? If so they screwed you over. They sold you the phone then reported it stolen later and got themselves a brand new on on a warrenty claim. As soon as they report their current one stolen T Mobile blacklists the IMEI. Call the cops on them. Call the warrenty company too any let them know that a fraudlent claim was filed.

hi, thanks for your reply.
yes i bought it from a store and when i took it to them for service, it just sat there for 2 weeks before i pulled it back. they did not work on it and when i diagnosed the imei problem, they replied that this has never happened to them before so i doubt they are capable of repairing this anyway.
based on your suggestion that the imei is blacklisted- if this is true, how come the issue doesn't go away temporarily when i flash to oem without a sim installed? the phone does not go onto the network at all- it shows that circle upon boot. i am thinking that if the imei was indeed blocked, it would allow the phone to go online to the carrier and then report it as unknown.
the issue seems to be that either the nv has been corrupted (which i am guessing would be rewritten over with a fresh one when flashed) or there is some hardware fault (such as the cell radio) which is causing this.
the phone works great on wifi, all apps work fine, everything seems normal except for the cellular/mobile ability.
that's why i am asking if there is a hardware diagnostic i can run to verify or deny this is the problem.
thanks
Greg

If you bought it from a store brand new then the imei is not likely the issue. At least not because its been blacklisted.
Again though, you bought it from a store. Its 4 months old and it broke. Take it back and tell them to give you a new one. What country are you in? Some countries have much stronger consumer protection rules.

Have you pulled out the battery and looked on the back and checked the IMEI there to see if its blacklisted? If it isn't then you can push it back into the phone, I had the problem on my old s3 and I would think that the solution would be the same to fix it.

Yeah it sounds like something deleted out the information in the rom that holds that data.
I beleive in the etc folder.
I forget without looking.
There are many tools on the forum to backup IMEI data to prevent this from happening and restore it from backup if it does.
In this case, were presumably there is no backup, the phone will need to be serviced by samsung.
Agreed. Based on the number of ideas I tried from xda, the issue was never repaired so I hooe samsung can help

based on checks with several imei blacklist sites, it seems that my imei is blacklisted (wtf!)
i have emailed t-mobile to verify as well.
but here's a question- if my device got blacklisted on the night when the imei went null in the phone- was it deactivated by t-mobile (note, i am not a t-mobile customer, i am not in the USA) and if it was, how come flashing to samsung oem doesn't repair the issue?
i do not have a sim in the phone so it's not even going to try to connect to a carrier. i am confused if it could have been remotely disabled via t-mobile and how can i get this back up and running again?
Thanks

The store you bought it from sounds shady if they won't honor the manufacturers warranty. They also seem to have sold you a stolen phone. Call the cops.
You will never get the phone unblacklisted.

Once blacklisted it's a done deal. Even if you offer to pay any balance owed tmobile will say no.
Only recourse is try and get a refund from the store.

Can anyone say how t-mobile did this? I do not have a t-mobile sim, I was using the phone on wifi as normal when the imei went null
How did t-mobile find the device to null the imei (I am not in the usa) and what exactly was done? What files or database on my device was deleted/erased?
Thanks
Greg

Nothing was changed on your phone.
T Mobile blacklists the phone's serial number (IMEI) which is sent to the cell tower everytime the phone moves to a new tower or re-authenticates itself on a tower. If your IMEI is blacklisted then the network says it won't allow the device to authenticate.
Even though you don't use T Mobile you may still be using a T Mobile network. The 4 main US carriers sublet their networks to smaller carriers, and while I'm not super familiar with the cell carriers used in Trinnidad, I'd bet you anything that the US carriers opperate the networks there even if it's under different names or through subletting of the their networks.
There is also some ambiguity as to if cell phone carriers share those blacklists with each other. If they do, then getting blacklisted on one GSM network is the same as getting blacklisted on all GSM networks. I'm not sure if that's going on though.
Hmmmm then the issue I have is different. The device is showing a null imei so it never gets to register on the carrier

Then something else happened that damaged the IMEI on your device.
But you specifically said you checked your IMEI against the blacklist and said yours was blacklisted. All advice that was given to you after that was based on that information.
If the IMEI is damaged on your device, then you need to find help elsewhere. We do not discuss how to repair/restore/replace IMEI's on XDA unless you have a previous backup of the EFS partition made in recovery for YOUR device. If so, just restore that backup. If not, you cannot use XDA to find out how to fix a bad IMEI. There are too many ways that information is used for evil and theivery and XDA will not be a party to the discemination of that information.
Agreed, understood.
If you look at my original question, you will see where I was querying a null imei. And as the thread continued, someone suggested I check the imei blacklist. I thought that t-mobile had done something remotely to my device to disable it, that's how I got to this point. My original issue still remains-null imei.
I understand that changing imei is illegal so I have not requested that. I was enquiring what could have happened to my device, given that I did not root or tamper with it in any way to cause a null imei.
If it is that the efs or nv or whatever file on the device got corrupted, I can accept that. Odd thing is that if it's a protected system file then how could it become corrupted in the first place.
Nevertheless, I do not wish to be blacklisted here on xda so I am not asking for advice on how to change imei.
If I knew I needed to backup whatever files before, I would have. But this is not my first Android (I owned a nexus one since it came out and it still works to this day) and I never had this issue of corrupted files. Granted, it is an older version of android.
I appreciate all the advice given so far.
Thanks
