The update IS possible OTA. It does not show up in KIES for some reason.
A couple of things before you do this.
Be aware that once you have the MJB bootloader that comes with the 4.3 update, you cannot go back to anything lower without bricking the phone. Plenty of articles here about it. Until someone here finds a way, it's a one way trip, and there is no stock firmware available yet to flash via Odin. I'm also not sure if you can load one of the other 4.3 versions found here without bricking it after the OTA 4.3.
Some new features are added in 4.3, and some are broken. For me, after the update, s-voice no longer works via Bluetooth, and I'm pretty sure it is an S-voice and not BT issue. Others are reporting battery life issues, constant updates, etc. Research research research. (I wish I had)
Go to settings - about device - software update and follow the prompts to get an OTA. I don't think AT&T is pushing it, but is available. Probably not a bad idea to boot to recovery first and wipe the cache before you do.
You have to be running a stock recovery for it to install and its about a 1gig download, so be on wireless and have a fully charged battery.
In my case, I had the phone rooted with a toggles mod. The update went partially and broke some things. I had to flash to an unmodded unrooted 4.1.1 via Odin to get the update to go.

I made the mistake of trying to flash MJ2 bootloader after having the MJB bootloader. It boots now with the "unbrick" sd card. Would it be possible to ODIN stock 4.1 and still boot with the SD card so it could take the 4.3 OTA again?

I don't know. I've never bricked a phone. As I understand it, 4.3 BL blows e-fuses making it impossible to downgrade. If that is in fact an accurate description, then even if you were to get it to boot via SD card and installed 4.1.1, it would brick it again (double brick?)
Considering the dangers involved, I'm afraid to even sideload a different MJB 4.3 on mine.
You might just have to suck it up and send it off for a J-tag service. I've never done it, but I think others here have.
here's the link I've seen most.

I am trying to learn more about it but my "initial" understanding is that the "blown efuse" thing is that you can no longer boot from an earlier bootloader but it doesn't "damage" anything else. Therefore, since I already have a phone in that state but it can boot off the SD card I'm wondering if it doesn't make things worse to flash a 4.1 stock image. It would still fail to boot via EMMC but then boot off SD? Then the OTA could "possibly" happen? I doubt it is possible or someone would have posted about it but I haven't seen that you definitely CAN'T do it so I am continuing to look.

He may not if it is a soft brick. As long as when he says softbrick he means that it is not loading past the Samsung log or the ATT logo for example. I was on stock rooted 4.3 as well and tried flashing other roms as well and soft bricked my phone in the process.
I ended up with two choices, load only 4.3 (The STOCK MOD v4 install worked for me just fine - but I was trying to get out of 4.3 tbh) Tried several other roms and all would end in a soft brick.
Finally landed on a stock 4.1.2 UCMG2 rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2388065
After clearing my internal SD and formatting it I flashed it and it worked (took a long time on the Samsung logo but worked!) the wifi is a little flaky at times but it always was on 4.1.2 for me anyways... the key I believe was that this rom did not have a bootloader and modem updated, which was required to properly downgrade after having had previously installed 4.3.
OP try it out and see how that works? Unfortunately I could not find a TAR of this, but luckily I was able to use a microSD adapter to move the needed files onto the SD card so that I could flash in TWRP.

If he was on stock 4.3 and tried to ODIN to stock 4.1.1, then he's gonna need a JTAG.
If he had tried to flash something via TWRP/CWM then it wouldn't have been an issue.

Aaaah OK! Thanks for the clarification on why
You do not need a JTAG service. There is a way to unbrick it of you accidentally downgraded your bootloader from 4.3 OTA.

[Q] Trying to downgrade from 4.4.2 (Cyanagenmod 11) to 4.1.2 stock (T999UVDMD5)

As you'll soon discover, I'm a noob. I stupidly took the OTA update on my Samsung Galaxy S3 T-Mobile T999 from 4.1.2 to 4.3. Since doing so mine and my wife's phone (did the same thing to her also) gets in a mess after being connected to the car stereo bluetooth and prevents outgoing calls unless the phone is rebooted.
So to try to solve this, I rooted the phone and installed CM 11, so now I'm on 4.4.2. This didn't help the issue either and instead is worse at connecting to the bluetooth.
I want to get my phone back to the stock 4.1.2 rom, which I got from sammobile (PDA T999UVDMD5) or at worst back to the 4.3 stock rom (PDA T999UVUEMJC).
This morning I tried to flash T999UVDMD5_T999TMBDMD5_T999UVDMD5_HOME.tar using ODIN 307 but it failed almost instantly with an Fail! Auth message.
I also tried to flash CM 10.1 zip on my SD card using ClockworkMod Recovery v 6.0.4.5 but again it failed almost instantly (sorry I didn't take note of the error).
So now I'm back to CM 11. So any suggestions for how to get back to either of the stock roms?

If you are getting errors in both odin and cwm, it sounds like it is a root issue. In other words, it sounds like the apps are being denied access to root and therefor cannot flash. Both odin and cwm are able to generate logs so you can tell the reason for the fail. Personally, I would recommend flasing twrp recovery instead of cwm since it seems to simplify alot and is a little better for our device. Without knowing exactly why the flash is failing, i would just recommend to try and re-root the phone again.
Did you put the phone in Downloading mode before connecting to the Odin ?
Do not try to flash 4.1.2 ever. It will brick your phone.

Yes the phone was in downloading mode. I couldn't find any posts that thought that I would brick my phone for sure by downgrading so I thought I would try. Could I go back to the 4.3 Stock ROM with some degree of confidence?

You cannot downgrade like that once you have updated to official 4.3 firmware, no offence but why would you try it even after Perseus said not to? Anyway if you want to go back to 4.1.2 so badly just download a 4.1.2 ROM and flash it in recovery

Downgrade from CM11 4.4.2 to 4.3 on I747
I went from 4.3 stock to CM11 on my i747 but i didnt like the update. So i am trying to go back to 4.3 however whenever i try to install the 4.3 zip file thru twrp or CWM, it fails. As far as i know there is no odin file for going back. I tried to flash rogers 4.3 file through odin (thinking i would flash at&t modem later) but that also failed.
I would appreciate any help on how to install 4.3 once 4.4.2 has been installed on an i747

For One, you are on the wrong forum. This is for T-Mobile's S3 not AT&T. Second, Like @passtheknowledge said, you really need to do significant research and reading here on XDA.

Please Read through this Thread. For Future Reference, all Odin Files for S3 in general are looked up by unique Keyword Root66. That thread is the right place for you to post errors or issues. If there's no 4.3 image for your phone there, you can post a request as well.
For your immediate Problem, there is a an alternate ATT StockMod Rom by @saranhai Please see this thread. Pay particular attention to the mandatory requirement of flashing a particular modem beforehand.

How to manually update I747 to 4.4.2

Hey guys,
I got a I747 I want to give to my mother as a gift.
I downgraded 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 and ran the secret menu unlock to unlock the sim card, that worked perfectly.
Now I want to update this out of 4.1.1 to 4.4.2 but I cannot find a stock firmware to run on odin anywhere.
Do I need to go to 4.3 first? Is there a stock firmware for that?
SamMobile stops at 4.1.2... OTA obviously doesn't work.
How Can I get this done..

You can just flash stock 4.1.2 firmware from sammobile and then run OTA updates.
I also found this on sammobile: Canada (Bell Mobile) (Black Edition), Version: Android 4.4.2, PDA: I747MVLUFNE6
CSC: I747MOYCFNE6, MODEM: I747MVLUFNE6

If I update to 4.1.2 will OTA come? Even with the I747(not the I747m) on the Bell network?

I have a Motorola Atrix from Bell. I flashed it with stock ATT firmware and received OTA updates from ATT over wi-fi.
Since you have the i747, start with stock pre-rooted ATT 4.1.1. This will flash the stock recovery, radio, and bootloader. Run triangle away, flash a stock unrooted ATT stock 4.1.1 ROM, and take the OTA updates.

I have 4.1.1 stock firmware on my att 1747. It has never been rooted.

Can I flash a bell i747m 4.4.2 image onto this i747 or will it brick?

You can flash i747m firmware on your phone but DO NOT flash the radios or bootloader from an i747m to an i747 and vice versa. Bricking is a really possibility if you do that.
Do you have a custom recovery? If you do, you will need to install a stock recovery.
Try resetting the phone (wiping cache, data) in recovery or through the ROM itself.

Alright, I have the stock recovery. How do I not flash the radio and boatloads when using the firmware from sammobile?
You cant. You cannot flash another devices firmware. Odin wont let it happen and if it did youd end up hard bricked due to mixed firmware. For example your sbl1, modemst and param partitions (plus others) would be i747 and youd be flashing sbl2, sbl3, rpm, etc from an I747M.
The only thing you could use are the system partition and kernel, nothing else. There are two ways to accomplish this, one is to build a rom from the firmware and flash that. The other is to flash with mobile odin, but that requires root and youd still have to be very careful.
Another priblem I see you encountering is you cannot run 4.4.2 without 4.3 or newer firmware. It will not boot otherwise.
You need to go to the General section and follow one of enewman17's tutorials to get to either 4.3 or 4.4.2. Personally, I dont see any other way you will be able to accomplish it.

Alright, based on Doc holiday, and others they say It cannot be done and from my experience I beleive them.
Thank you,
It's very difficult to do this when others are giving bad advice.
So for the record, cannot flash i747m firmware to i747.
Thanks!
The annoying part here is I can do it with my m7, I just flashed the Dev edition onto my Bell m7 with no problems.
All devices are different in many ways. What is perfectly safe to do with one brand or model can brick another.
And I wouldnt call it "bad" advice... I've seen audit13 and others helping lots of folks with very good advice. We all make mistakes and we all have more we can learn about these devices. No one knows everything about this stuff and shouldnt let that prevent them from trying to help.
Those who are trying to help are doing so with the best of intentions and tell people what they think could be the best way to solve a given problem. In cases like this one, its easy to see how anyone would think its ok to flash different firmware between similar models based on being able to do so on other devices they are familiar with. (If I had gone into those forums I wouldve been telling people the opposite and ended up being wrong there.)
All I can say is chalk it up as a new lesson on a different device, and I hope you still appreciate that someone was trying to help.
@audit13 I hope none of this discourages you from helping. Ive seen plenty of threads where your advice was sound and appreciated, and I am glad you have been around to help so many people out!
Now, back on the problem at hand... if you want to be running the latest 4.4.2 kk, you will have the option to use the OS (/system and kernel) from either the I747 or I747M firmware. But first you must fully update to a minimum of the 4.3 MJB firmware for the I747. Once you have this running for your base firmware/bootloader, you can then run the Bell or AT&T (4.3 or 4.4.2) system. (I hope this is making sense!)
So first, update the full 4.3, MJB, firmware via Odin. (Theres a thread in General with the file, ill post the link in a min).
If you want to update to 4.4.2 firmware, you can then follow enewman17's tutorial to do so via OTA.
You can then either stay with that, or use Mobile Odin to flash ONLY the system and kernel from the Bell firmware.
Let me know if any of that needs better clarification! Also let us know what your ultimate goal is. From the options you have, where do you want to end up?

After updating with the 4.3 firmware, you can first try using the official ota to update. Then, if that fails you can go to enewman17's thread and try his method.

[Q] sgh-i747 original updates

Hi all, I have an SGH-i747 with ver 4.0.4 which has been rooted. I will like to update my version systematically with the original updates i believe there where from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 then 4.1.2. then 4.3, 4.4.2 etcc.. its there a place where i can find the original ups, my phone will not take the original firmware updates on its own. Reason is once i try to flash any ROM pass 4.1.1 i loose the Mobile Data getting the no sim inserted msg and no signal, forcing me to go back the original state in order to work. seems there is a problem with the modem once i go pass 4.1.1. .. thank you.
What bootloader version is on the phone? Where did you get the firmware to flash? You're using desktop Odin to flash?
Are ota updates an option for you? If they are you can unroot and flash the stock recovery; it might be easiest just to Odin back to stock.
Otherwise enewman has posted firmware updates to xda. They are bootloader + modem zips you can flash in custom recovery. You have to flash them incrementally, mjb then ne4 then nj1. Search the forum here and you'll find them. Just be careful and read read read those threads. Messing with bootloaders is the best way to hard brick this phone.
I'm in a similar situation - I've been on a custom version of the Stock ROM for 4.1.2 - never bothered to update the bootloader because I had the soft unlock done, didn't want to lose it. Now I'm bored with it. I'd love to get up to 4.4, or even a 5.0 ROM... but not sure the steps needed to do so. I'm vaguely aware that I have to update the bootloader/kernel, etc... but it seems like I'm 4 years behind the curve with all the ROMs and threads about bootloaders, and I've lost my touch.
That thread with the list of bootloaders sounds good though, I'll go looking for it to start I guess.

Thanks! I'll give it a look, down a couple of shots of liquid courage, and give it a go this weekend.
EDIT: Yikes, didn't take long for that to fizzle out. I'm using a i747M. Noticed that my current baseband version isn't listed anywhere on that thread. Hmmm. Oh well, guess I'll do some more digging later...
With an i747m, you can flash the latest 4.4.2 using firmware from sammobile.com and desktop Odin.
Do I need to do them in sequence, or can I jump to the latest? I'm assuming once I've flashed the stock firmware, I can load any current custom ROM?
@gfinockio, is your phone sim unlocked? If not and you don't see any mention of the warranty bit in download mode, you could flash back to stock 4.1.1, use the free method to sim unlock, and then run OTA updates until you are running the latest ROM. OTA updates are the safest route to upgrade the phone.
If you phone is sim unlocked already, you could flash directly to the latest ROM; however, you will not be able to downgrade the bootloader as any attempts to downgrade the bootloader could hard brick you phone.

I used the "free unlock" in 4.1.2 (so it's unlocked) but I thought when you upgraded the bootloader you lost that lock. Now that I believe that isn't the case (and I've used a different tool to unlock as well), I may just try the OTA updates. I was with MTS (Manitoba), but now I'm with Rogers, so I guess I would just use the Rogers OTA images to upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.4? Do I use Odin or whatever to do that? Once I upgrade to a "stock" image, won't the updater just prompt me to upgrade again and again until I'm "up to date"?
Unlocking the phone via code or the free method is permanent even after upgrading the ROM, bootloader, and modem.
The carrier ROMs for the i747m are pretty much identical but I always recommend sticking with the original carrier's ROM. If you download the stock image from sammobile.com, use Odin to flash the ROM.
OTA updates will not work with a rooted stock ROM too.
When i search for the stock firmware on sammobile for the i747m, it doesn't have any listings. Are you able to find it on there? I don't see it.
Search for the sgh-i747m.

i need help updating from 4.1.1

ok ppl.. I really need some help.. ill try my best to describe whats going on.. I bought my phone a couple years ago.. rooted it, install custom recovery straight out the box and never looked back... I have never updated bootloader or modem... and am currently using dlk3 as both... I wanted to clean my phone, and finally update bootloader, modem, and everything.. so I odin back to my origal stock.. android version 4.1.1 thinking I can just manually do the ota update.. but when I update it says um currently all up to date using 4.1.1 I tried using kies, but that also says im up to date....
so now im lost... I know you should do them in increments but I don't know wich order.. and I know when you get to a certain point theres no going back.. kinda why I never updated... I really want to get everything updated to the lattest version of stock.. latest bootloader and everything...
I thought the last update was 4.3.. so where did the NE4, NJ1, NJ2 come from?? wich just confused me even more?
oh, theres a 4.3ota thread.. basically said odin 4..1.1 wich I have.. then install 4.1.2, then 4.3 from a sdcard.. but my phone always had problems with sdcards.. and nowdays wont read any sdcards.. so that's not an option for me..
any information is appreciated
Is the system completely stock? Did you do a factory wipe using stock recovery after flashing 4.1.1? Did you try removing your sim card and moving the date ahead by a couple of days?
Yes.. everything is completly stock again.. including stock rocovery.. yes I did a factory reset with stock recovery after flashing 4.1.1.. yes I tried removing the sim.. and yes I did move the date ahead a few times searching for update
If you just looking to update the bootloaders and modem without going through the OTA, this may be a place to start: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
Thank yoh audit13.. thats the thread I was yalking about in my OP.. that requires the use of an SDcard..
I shoukd have RMA this phone when I had a chance.. within the first year, it corrupted corrupted 3 sdcards in the forst year.. so I just stop using them.. they still read nust fine in my pc.. but now my phone wont even read them.. so im really at a loss
Sorry, I didn't notice the part about the external sd card in the thread I linked. I don't have the i747, I have the i747m and the stock 4.4.2 ROM is available for mine.
I think Kies has been replaced by smart switch.
Not sure what else to suggest other than copying the files to the internal memory and trying to flash the update that way.
i did see something about smart switch, but didn't update thinking it wasn't needed.. maybe that's my next step..
I don't see flash from internal with stock recovery.. just ADB, cache.. wich I don't know what they are.. or external.. those are my 3 options
could this be my problem? befoer odin back to stock.. I used triangle away.. used it before with success.. but I notice when im in download, flash counter says 1 and everything else says official.. I also notice when my recovery, my android guy is laying down with a red triangle..
any information is appreciated
The android laying down is fine.
With the external ad cards, are you using the phone to format the cards?
but what about the flash counter reading 1? I would still think it d/l but not install.. that I could fix if I could get that far.. lol
I use to format the sdcards in my phone.. but after a few months they become corrupt.. cards read just fine in my pc, but phone refuses to see them.. I been trying to get them to work formatted as EXfat.. NTFS is my second option
The best format I found is using a computer to format them as fat32.
The download counter is not an issue. As long as as you don't see the word "custom" in download mode, you should be fine.
You may just have to just wait and try the Ota update every few hours.
forgot about FAT32.. I do remember reading that was best...
and im running out of options, so I think your correct on the OTA
I been running TWRP and liquidsmooth 4.4.4 for ever.. and it was great.. but I wanted to run there lollipop.. but it wont boot on my phone.. I was told its because my bootloader is so old.. I also remember readin awhile back that updating bootloader can solve SDcard isuues.. but I have no clue about that..
thx for the suggestions audit.. ill make sure to thank you
Let me know how fat32 works. I am curious myself.
The latest custom Roms definitely need a kk bootloader and modem, preferably the latest nj2.

"all i can really do , is stay out of my own way and let the will of heaven be done"
no.. fat32 no go..
and im on jellybean..
couldn't I just odin 4.1.2, then 4.3.. but im having problems finding none rooted versions.. that I would trust.. I was hoping for OTA.. all that odin makes me nervous.. to many opportunities for things to go wrong
Just to confirm, the phone is running 4.1.1? There is no Odin i747 flash for 4.1.2 as far as I know.
In order of preference, I like OTA, Odin, and then flashable zips because OTA upgrades are the safest in my opinion as long as the phone is running stock.
ATT never released a full firmware for the i747 beyond 4.1.1 which explains why it is not available on sammobile.com.
yes, I am positive everything!!! is stock 4.1.1.. it was what was on my phone when I got it.. always made sure to have a stock image on hand.. and I never messed with bootloader or modem.. and i have verified there ucdlk3
I agree on OTA being safer.. but would you suggest I do now?? I really want to get this updated... 4.1 blows coming from 4.4.. lol I could always just set it the way I had with an easy root.. but I really wanted to try lolipop
All I can suggest is flashing the bootloader and modem in tandem since you can't seem to get OTA updates.
Check out the general thread. There is one for mjb, ne4, nj1, and nj2.
Do you have to flash them incrementally? I don't know as I don't have the i747.

Any place to download sbf files?
Sent from my ATRIX HD using XDA Free mobile app
Samsung s3 doesn't use SBF files. Is that a Motorola format?
