[Q] Unrevoked3 failing on HTC desire

hi there
I got my SLCD desire a few weeks ago and did the HTC upgrade to android 2.2.
Later I discovered that, with this upgrade, the rooting process is quite difficult.
Yesterday I found this thread to downgrade Android 2.2 to 2.1 (which I did and which seems to have worked perfectly).
Now I try to install the ClockworkMod with Unrevoked 3.1 to get root access.
I use win7 x64. Unrevoked3 gets stuck at "pushing recovery image".
It's been like that for half an hour without any change...
I installed the modified hboot driver and there are no devices without working drivers in the "device manager".
Is this a windows specific problem and it will work if I use linux?
Or did I do something wrong?
thanks for helping
sorry I'm a new member I cannot post the link to the "Downgrade froyo to stock 2.1", it tells me new members cannot post outside links...

How many times have you tried to run Unrevoked?
dunno, about 10 times
most times it failed after 5-40 sec with "failed to push recovery image. terminating...".
And now is the third time that it is pushing and pushing... last two times I quit after an hour or so...

yeah well it should only take about 15 seconds in all so its obviously not working, as for why I am not sure it sounds as though you have set it up correctly. Does your phone boot into HBOOT correctly when you plug it in using Unrevoked?
You have to use a custom image to root slcd screen using unrevoked. Let me see if i can find the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7563237&postcount=1
hahaha i'm stupid! *facepalm*
nowhere is written that the sd card has to be in disk mode (opposed to charge only for the downgrade)
now it is working I think that was the only problem .... :S
thanks anyways for the quick answers
hmm ... how long should it take to flash it?
It now correctly goes to hboot, connects and then reboots and then states:
Flashing recovery image. Do not touch your phone!
But it's already been doing that for some minutes....
Is it normal that it starts flashing while the HTC-Boot-Logo is still visible?
(late) EDIT: worked with Linux LiveCD, something on windows made it impossible to finish the rooting process

[Q] Am I root?

Hello everyone. First of all, sorry if this post is not in the right forum.
My problem is that I rooted my HTC Desire a few months ago using unrevoked3, or at least I think so. I know I tried to do that, but right now I don't remember if I succeeded or I gave up.
The question is, how can I know if my phone is rooted? I have the "superuser permission" icon in my menu but if I run Terminal Emulator and type "su" I get "permission denied".
I know that sounds kind of stupid. I was convinced my phone was rooted but since I am getting the "permission denied" message something must not be working...
Any help?
Thank you in advance.
Boot to recovery. If you have clockworkmod you are rooted
Nothing happens
If I do that, a mobile phone image appears with a "warning" sign besides (an exclamation mark inside a red triangle) and nothing happens. What does that mean?
Thanks.
Easy way to know if you are rooted, is to download an app that requires root and if it works then u are rooted. If not try again

It seems that you could've lost the root access.
To make sure, download any apps with root prerequisite from the market and see if they work (as suggested).
Do Unrevoked again if you are sure that you have lost the root access.
Note:
I will loose the root access if you flash any official RUU from HTC that si why you should better turn the automatic firmware update off.

What hardwarerevision does your desire have? You find this out, when you boot into bootloader and read the number behind the word "pvt" (first line). If there stands a 4, you have to run unrevoked with custom recovery (amonra 2.0.1) again. Reason: unrevoked flashes clockworkmod recovery. But this recovery does not work with pvt4- desires. You have to download amonra-recovery:

After downloading and extracting the zip, integrate this recovery into unrevoked (File>custom recovery>choose downloaded amonra recovery) and run unrevoked again:

No warranty for any damage.

Hi again.
I downloaded an app from the market with root requisites and it doesn't work, so it means I lost my root access, in case I ever had it. Maybe I lost it when I updated to 2.2 via OTA.
About what MatDroid said, my hardware version is pvt3, so I shouldn't have that problem.
Anyway, I have tried to run unrevoked again and, after the computer makes my phone reboot, unrevoke gets stuck and displays "Waiting for bootloader, make sure the driver is installed". I have been asking google for a possible solution to that but I just haven't succeeded.
I am sure the driver for my phone is installed, as I have been messing around with ADB in the last week to unlock the "move to sd" option in every app and it worked. Or is it a different driver, perhaps?
Thank you for all your replies.
You can check if your driver is installed in two ways:
1.) Start adb and type
Code:
adb devices
Now the serial number of your device should appear
2.) Connect phone in usb debug mode and on "only charge" and "never ask" to your computer, start windows devices manager and check wether there is the device "android 1.0" or "android phone" or something like that.
Maybe install hboot drivers again:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
And conclusive, do not say thanks, use the thanks button.

It appears in the "adv devices" list and in the devices manager, both. Anyway, I am going to try to install the drivers again, because I still get stuck in the "Waiting for bootloader..." screen.
Well... Aftef having tried lots of things during this evening, reinstalling drivers in different computers and running different versions of unrevoked, I finally got it to work.
But...
Here is the thing... Although unrevoked ran correctly untill the "Done" message was shown, I still have "S-ON" in the screen when I turn on the phone with the volume down key pressed. I continuously get "permission denied" messages in adb console as well.
Before unrevoked showed "Done", I had tu run it a couple of times because it got stuck in "Rebooting to recovery" or something like that. Is there a problem with that? I have been asking google about that and I found some people with the same problem, but they re-ran unrevoked as I did and their problem solved.
I feel that I am really close to getting full root access but still need a bit more help... Thank you all!
With unrevoked you do not root your phone. To get full root access you need to be s-off:
http://alpharev.nl/
Is that what I need, for instance, to run the "Ad Free" app from the market? Is that what they mean when they say "you need root access"? Thanks.

No. You can run adfree without to be s-off. If there is written, one needs root excess to run this app, you can run all of these apps (the where it's not needed, anyway). Only if there is written, you need to be s-off, then you need to be s-off. But i only remember one app (a game, so not really important). Conclusion: You have the right access to run apps which need root access.
Well, it happens that I tried to run it but my phone rebooted. It made me think that maybe it was due to some kind of root access issue. I'll ask for a solution in some Ad Free thread.
The app System Tools is not working properly either when I try to perform root required actions. In case it may mean something.
Well, it is finally working now. Seems that this bad dream is over. Thank you!

[Q] Stuck in recovery boot loop HTC Desire GSM ~ ASSISTANCE APPRECIATED!!

Severe panic!!
I rooted my Desire which was running 2.2 Froyo on the O2 UK network using unrevoked and it worked fine without any issues. Custom recovery by ClockworkMod.
The next day I then decided i needed to turn S-off so found a guide and tried installing unrevoked forever from a zip on the root of the SD and i got 'installation aborted error 42'. Tried again the next day but before i got started i decided to give myself re-assurance that i wouldnt lose anything on the device so i entered recovery and chose restore.
Big mistake! My handset then rebooted and got to the O2 splash screen. It wont move from there. Pulled battery out and tried again. Same. I assume i havent bricked the device and it is just stuck in a boot loop?
Since then i have removed all my user data from the SD card and 'cleared storage'. Tried installing an miui rom and again 'installation aborted'.
Can anyone clarify why this is happening and point me in the right direction?
I am a noob and would appreciate any help on this.

Try to bring you phone to stock.
Download RUU .
Turn your phone on in fastboot (hold back button and press power - when your phone is off).
You have to have HTC Sync installed.
Run the exe file.
After that repeat the rooting and s-off-ing procedure.
Can the RUU be flashed in clockwork mod recovery or does it have to go through HTC Sync?
If it cannot be flashed in Clockwork Mod, I presume he has to
Connect phone via USB to PC,
boot into Fastboot as you mentioned
run HTC Sync
and then run the Ruu.exe file (does HTC Sync recognise this filetype and then do it's thing?)
And that's it? (Just that it seems too simple!)

You might need a goldcard. Try without one for now.
Right I'll let him know to give that a go. If it doesn't work I might pick your brains around the goldcard option.

Hello. I think you wanted to say you chose back-up, otherwise you couldn't have chosen the restore option since you don't have any restore points.
So if you hit back-up and your phone stuck in the boot loop it is normal. This is a problem because of the root and the fact that making a nandroid back-up will mess something in the NAND. But restoring the back-up you just made should resolve all the problems. I had the same issue and by only restoring the back-up I've just made got me working back, and still had the ROOT.
I don't think you need to run a RUU just for this.

I should have made clearer sorry. After i rooted successfully i entered recovery and hit backup option and it told me it had created a backup successfully. I had been using the phone as normal for another day before deciding to s-off and at that point i thought to 'test' my backup to make sure it had done it so i chose restore thinking anything i have downloaded on the phone since the back up will disappear and was expecting the restore to bring my phone back to the settings i had the previous day but the restore failed and thats when it got stuck in the boot loop.
Mine did the same thing except, instead of trying to s-off it just decided at one point that it felt like it, literally, I wasnt even using it at the time it was just charging. I did downloaded the stock ruu, it was linked earlier. Put it in fastboot, run the ruu and boom, however i did it on my goldcard, so make one if it doesnt work without it. Good luck.

BACK IN BUSINESS!! Dude you are the man! The RUU didnt install as it was a different boot version so from the site you suggested i used the Froyo version and its now working! Many thanks.
P.s. What's the easiest way to s-off? Also whats the correct way to create a complete back up restore point and then actually restore to that point without getting to this stage again?

***NEW ISSUE***
Since i have my phone back to it's original state and have lost root access. The idea is to root again via Unrevoked, which requires me to update the Android 1.0 driver (in device manager under other devices) to the Android Bootloader Interface. However, DM now does not say 'other devices - Android 1.0' and instead it says 'Android Devices - MY HTC'. So i decided to completely uninstall HTC Sync and all it's drivers and then rebooted PC, reinstalled SYNC and then uninstalled again but this time leaving the drivers in. Rebooted again and repeated the process but it still recognises the device as 'MY HTC' instead of 'Android 1.0'.
Could it be that this is fine, it's just the new way since i am using the updated version of HTC sync now? Or is this going to cause an issue? I am now playing it a lot safer to avoid anymore issues and quite happy to try something you may suggest...

Code:

. If your desire's serial number is shown, everything is fine.

Thanks for the suggestions surrounding ADB but i guess im too much of a noob for that part, it seems massively complicated, im sure it doesnt to you guys. Isnt there an easier way? Or considering my above quote, can i just assume that its all working fine and go ahead with the root or should it really need to have 'Android 1.0' in device manager?
Im pretty certain this all happened becuase the first time i rooted i had followed instructions and uninstalled HTC Sync (not the drivers) which had been on my system since i got the phone lat year. Since i had to reinstall to flash the RUU im certain its an updated version of HTC Sync thats causing this issue. But is it really an issue?

I ran the Hack Ace on my HTC Desire HD from my Ubuntu 12.10 OS and I got to the point where the phone rebooted with the Android version downgraded to 2.3.3 and Sense 2.1.
In the Effen manual it then says to run the following command to check whether it worked
Code:
adb reboot recovery
but I get the red triangle.
Another section in the Effen manual headed "Flashing ROMs with ClockworkMod Recovery" says
Hold down vol- button, then press power to start, keep holding the vol- down button until Hboot menu shows up
After some file checks are done, use the vol- down button to scroll down to recovery

But when the Hboot menu appears, I cannot scroll, and after a short pause the phone loads the PD98IMG.zip file and prompts me with

And it keeps doing this each time I try to access the Hboot menu.
I have searched the forums (I admit not all too thouroughly...) but did not find someone with a similar situation.
My phone works fine, but the whole point of the exercise was to flash the TrickDroid_v4.0.0 ROM eventually...
Any advice would be appreciated

Delete the PD98IMG.zip file from your sdcard. Let me advice you that you are just downgraded and not S-OFF and rooted if you just ran the kit once. Phones running OS 2.3.5 need to be run twice, the first to downgrade and the second to achive S-OFF, superCID and root....make sure that you check that you are S-OFF, otherwise you will get stuck. :good:
ran second hack
Thank you for your quick response.
I was under the impression that the script had run twice, but that was incorrect.
I ran the script a second time now, and the phone got set to S-OFF, rooted...
success

[SOLVED!] Revolutionary stopping at "waiting for fastboot"

Hi, after a load trouble getting the bootloader to downgrade i finally managed to get onto the right HBOOT with help from "Chromium" - thanks, you were very helpfull.
Anyway, now im ready do S-OFF using revolutionary but the problem im having is it stops doing anything when it gets to the point of saying "waiting for fastboot".
It works fine till then, finds phone goes through all the steps fine and reboots the phone to boootloader but then stops doing anything.
Ive used this software before to S-OFF a desire s and it worked 1st time so i dont know what the problem could be
Please does anyone have any suggestions? im wondering if drivers could be a issue as i did do something to them yesterday when trying to use the unrevoked 3 utility so im gonna uninstall everything, reinstall htc sync for the stock drivers and uninstall sync again and see if that works
other than that i am clueless on this!
ive included a screen of revolutionary so you can see what im talking about.
Thanks, Steve.
The problem is the drivers everyone, If you install the custom modified HTC drivers for "UNREVOKED 3" It will prevent revolutionary from working.
Uninstall them and put the stock HTC drivers back on and all will work fine!
Hope this helps someone else.
