I've had my 2013 Nexus 7 for a while now and I recently flashed the factory image for 4.4.2 (from the Google Factory Images for Nexus Devices).
4.4.2 is running fine but I'm getting a lower total storage space (11.29 GB) than I'm supposed to have. I have the 32 GB version and I don't know why I have dramatically less storage space.

What does an app like SD Maid say about your partition space?
I managed to fix it by doing a Factory data reset under the Backup & reset settings menu.

Try using Clean Master app and maybe SD Maid from Play Store. You may have some stuff on your SD card left over. Sometimes the storage can get screwy and a factory reset with an OTA update is needed.

So, my latest adventure into rooting/flashing.
Wasn't happy with the stock 4.3 update, so decided to go back to CM (CM11 this time).
Everything went well. Root, CWM6, CM11, et viola.
However.
CM11 stopped recognizing my 64gb micro SD card. I've had this happen before so I was poking around in CWM trying to figure out how I fixed it last time.
I mistakenly told CWM to create a 4gb partition. That was stupid, because CWM couldn't even mount my external SD at the time. Complete oversight on my behalf. Anyway, it said it "succeeded" but I still couldn't see my external SD in any way. Long story short, I figured out the ext sd card and reformatted to fat32, making it totally visible in CM11 and CWM.
However, once looking at storage in Settings, I noticed my internal storage was smaller; about 11gb. It would appear I DID create a 4gb partition from CWM, but on the internal memory. The big kicker is that I can't find that partition anywhere! The phone works fine, but I'm missing precious internal space. I can't see the partition from CWM or any partition managers I download in the app store. Also can't see it if I plug the phone into my PC (win7).
I have some big MC2 reset tool I use whenever I want to go back to stock. I can never make up my mind between stock and custom, so I sometimes go back and forth. It's like a 1gb single flash that I install from recovery: it resets my flash counter and goes back to full unrooted stock. Would this fix my issue, causing me to have to re-root et al to get back to CM11? Or, would the fact that my internal memory is no longer the stock size/partition table cause a brick situation if I try to go back to stock?
Your internal storage is fine. You did not create any partition. Your phone has 16 gigs but you only get access to approximately 11 since your phone uses the rest for system, modem, etc..

Curious, since before I did this, I could see 16gb total storage in CWM (of course, with various parts of it being utilized for OS, apps, misc, etc). Also, I pull up my wife's stock GS3 and it also sees a total of 16gb available storage. Does stock ROM view internal storage completely differently? Does CM11 view it differently than other ROMs? If so, you'd think it'd be something widely known, or at least mentioned in the android community.
Edit:
Also, before this I could connect phone to PC, and PC would see 16gb total storage for phone. Now, it only sees 11.0 exactly. Awfully huge coincidence that there's now a difference in visible storage space that's close to the same size as the supposed partition CWM said it created for me.
Not sure about cwm display but here is a screen of my storage in slimkat. Has looked like this since day one before root and custom rom

Fascinating. It would appear CM and stock definitely show the available storage space differently. I'm officially ready for bed!

Mine shows total space 4.04GB . It's normal. Stock rom might show 8GB, but cm based roms show only the space available to you excluding the system files. Can you post screenshots?

It is okay if it shows 4.04 gb of memory...as that is the maximum storage space available.
You must have installed apps that's why now its showing 1.5gb left..

I think you backed up the rom using rom manager.
It use internal memory but it doesn't show
I checked my dads grand lol. It shows total memory 8gb. But my aogp ROM shows memory excluding system required memory.
So don't worry about it. Just clear memory by uninstalling apps and moving files to SD card.

Hi,
On doing the stock update to KitKat and also with a with custom Lollipop rom, my internal memory was reduced from 32GB to 16GB (with 10.11GB usable).
Can someone provide details of procedure to recover this memory.

Not internal memory, you have it mixed up with internal storage. The actual internal memory is 2gb and the internal storage is 32gb. But the actual sizes are 1.5gb and 24gb, since the missing spaces are used for system files. So if your internal storage is reduced to half of the storage, then you may need to format the storage. Flash the device back to the stock ROM should format the internal storage as well. Else use app such as link to SD to format and partition the internal storage.

Tks Hawkwind. Yes the internal storage is what I am referring to.
If I flash back to stock 4.1 then the 32GB internal storage may well reappear. However I updated via LG update to stock Kitkat and lost 16GB of the 32GB. So will I be able to do any update (from 4.1) or update to custom rom, without losing 16GB ?
Am I an isolated case here ? Has everyone else (with a 32GB internal storage version) successfully updated to Kitkat with no loss ?

You can flash the stock kk rom, and see if that gives you back your lost half of storage space.

No joy, using CWN, I wiped data, system caches. Unmounted cache and system memory. Did a stock install of factory 4.1, and still have not recovered original
32GB of internal storage.
PS. I used stock Android 4.1 KDZ file from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2460859
Hong Kong E98810D_00.kdz
Question would this file be phone specific (like maybe it is for a 16GB version of the phone, and not the 32GB version ???)
Therefore maybe I need a stock version for a 32GB E988 model ? Any advise pls.
I believe this will be resolved
After more searches, it would appear that the KDZ file needs to be device specific.
Therefore I will be looking for either a KitKat or Lollipop rom which is for a 32GB specific version.

Hi all,
I have a question regarding a phone i own. I flashed cm13 on it and i see it shows only 11.xx GB. Is this normal ? The phone is 16gb
Thanks
I own a 32 gb model and storage wise i think i only have 24 available so much is reserved for system partition plus other partitions efs aboot ect so id about say its normal
I know but on my wifes Galaxy s5 it shows her internal space is 16gb and if i remember correctly my phone showed that as well on the stock lg firmware. See video what i mean. CM13 shows something else (picture first post)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&persist_app=1&v=_VzCganiKo8
Mine does that after a while what I usually to do is if there is nothing you need on internal storage is to boot into twrp wipe internal storage ,making sure you have your rom on ext card (don't want to wipe that do we) then flash my rom.
This leaves me from a clean install with about 8 or 9 gb left to use on internal storage.I think what happens over time is a lot of useless files tend to build up on internal card and this is the reason you don't have much space left and also the operating system takes up quite a bit as well.
just buy a 64gb micro sdcard... or even a 32gb if you don't need much more, they are really cheap.
part of the missing space is the partition information space and the space used by the system/recovery/cache etc. on android 6.0 you can format it as internal.
How can i format that space ? I am running CM13 that uses Android 6.0.1
Here another screenshot from the recovery, why does the recovery not say i have 16GB ???? i don't really understand why it's not listed.
Because it shows available storage not total
Oke thanks for the answer.
Hi all, was just wondering if my System Storage was abnormally large at 8GB, or if that's about normal for other 10 users? I tried a reset and restore and it seems about the same, but wanted to be sure. Thanks

After reinstalling a new rom, and installing all the apps I used, I have 18GB left on mine. Of course there is also probably things on the internal storage that are taking up space in my case, which I should probably move over to the external SD.
