Broken Power Button Workaround? - Kindle Fire 2 Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting

A friend's KF2 has a broken power button (spilled chocolate milk on it in purse w/out realizing for days- don't ask why she had choc milk in her purse - but she did). I opened the device, disconnected battery and cleaned the button as best I could with water then contact cleaner, let it all dry for a day and got some use back but it was still very intermittent contact, but enough to let me access Recovery. Now the button is not even intermittent - just dead black plastic pimple- has been for several months. They use it by powering it on with the usb cable - a little inconvenient but it's mostly for a kid and he doesn't mind as long as he can use it.
But this post isn't about button repair, a step I don't want to take at this time for assorted reasons. What I prefer is a different way to get into the installed TWRP recovery to restore a backup or flash gapps to attempt a repair of Play store errors or just start over with a newer rom.
The Play Store problem I'm trying to fix happened after it did a bunch of updates when I connected to my wifi. They have no Internet and it had been months since any updates of any kind. All but 3-4 apps updated fine and run/load normally as they should. But there were some that gave 'Error 406' messages when attempting updates and I get the same error when installing apps from the Play Store.
I read around and did some suggested solutions: deleted cache and data (incrementally) from the Google Play Store app, Google Play services and Google Services Framework, rebooted, etc -- but still get the error message when installing or updating.
The ROM (Powerpoint/hashcode's CM10.1 from June 2013 -> cm-otter2-userdebug 4.2.2 JDQ39E eng.michael.20130627.170752 test-keys) seems fine otherwise and has kept root so I attempted some restores (system files) from Titanium backup but still have problem.
ADB works but the command:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
seem to simply power it down as it just goes black and lose USB connection. I unplug then reconnect usb and it boots normally.
This device was purchased before Amazon locked down the bootloader and I did this not owning a fastboot cable if that helps.
I would appreciate any suggestions on getting to recovery or perhaps how I might go about this using adb but no fastboot. Also if anyone has more suggestions to remedy the Play Store error that would be awesome too. As I said, the rom seems otherwise fine. This is a repair for a friend so there's no money involved, in fact she's ill and has very little to spend at this time. I'm doing this to help her and her kid. He wants some new non-wifi games and I can't get them to install. TIA :cyclops:

There is no other way.
You are incorrect in saying it was purchased before amazon locked the bootloader. The bootloader has always been locked. The recovery you are running is a "2nd bootloader" which allows us a hacked way into a recovery. Also referred to as bootstrapping.
Sorry to give you such news but there really is no other way.. We're lucky hashcode was able to get us a way to run custom roms at all.
Edit: also- play store error 406 usually means there is an issue with your Google account. Try a different account and see if that clears things up.

Thanks for your reply. They had problems before but I simply restored then upgraded them with twrp and they were fixed and on a better rom..if I could just get the button to let me into recovery the kitkat sounds like a better fit. I'll try your suggestion and change the account and get the play store going, hopefully.

Is GWallet safe yet?

I've been fretting about this for far too long and I want my question laid to rest for once and for all.
I am running stock 4.0.2 rooted and boot loader unlocked. I want to install the google wallet apk without worrying about it messing up and giving me the secure element error. Can someone please aid a fellow ever-worrying flasher?
And yes, I have a backup to rely on.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
There's no guarantees. Essentially to be absolutely safe you need to wait until Google releases something official.
The error occurs after installing another rom with a wipe or after a factory reset. The theory is to make sure to press reset within Google Wallet so that it deletes the info off the Secure Element's memory. This is still just a theory, no guarantee..
You should watch the main thread for the most up to date info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365360
To add to Royal2000H:
Even if you reset Google Wallet from within the app, it will still re-initialise the secure element. There's an ADB shell command that will reset it properly.

You need to download and install the Android SDK (software development kit). The ADB (Android device bridge) drivers and software are included with it. Sorry I don't have a link handy for you, maybe in the morning if someone else hasn't posted one.

perhaps make a backup then of your working ROM. cause i believe if you wipe or switch ROMs something happens that resets the NFC hardware and you may lose ability to use it again. i'm not totally sure of the details exactly though.
I have another experience to add to this thread.
Today my phone got stuck on the boot animation so I reloaded my current 4.03 ROM. When the device booted up after flashing the gapps.zip I tried using my NFC for a tag but it wouldn't work. Additionally, trying to access the "more..." settings menu froze the settings program.
At this point I tried multiple ROMS etc and had no luck getting my NFC to work until I restored my nandroid backup from long before wallet, the first day I got the phone.
I then flashed back to my 4.03 ROM and everything works fine until the Gapps.zip adds wallet which breaks the NFC again. Removing wallet from the .zip makes everything ok but there is apparently no way for me to get wallet working again. I tried the ADB command and everything, but whenever I reinstall wallet wallet itself just opens to a black screen that is frozen and it destroys my NFC(plus the settings freeze)
Is there anything else I can try? Is my secure element bricked forever(meaning I should exchange)? Or should I hold on until google releases an official .apk?
Thanks for posing the question
I actually, using a link from here, installed Google Wallet and It is working just fine for me but my phone is stock rom and unrooted (LTE Edition), So I'll be paying close attention to this thread because I might decide to root this phone in the future.

Can't press Google Play update or install button

HTC One X here had weird pixelating and freezing problems couple of weeks ago so we took it to the repair. They replaced almost everything, including the main board and we got it back just now. Works fine, but there's problems with Google Play. When trying to press update, it presses to the app. If trying to press update (just above the "remove" button) it presses remove instead and asks for the app removal. If trying to install new app and to press install, it doesn't do anything.
Is this because of the new android version they just rolled on to HTC One X or if they repaired it wrong, or replaced screen bits wrong or something? Really clueless here.
The phone is onrooted and on stock ROM, if that helps. Tried clearing data and the typical stuff, reboot, no luck. Before trying root and another ROM just asking if someone has similar problem, if not maybe we can take it back to the repair without unrooting work and such...
Did you try factory reset? If you don't want to do that then root, install titanium backup and uninstall the app, reboot then reinstall.

Hi, tried factory reset, didn't change a thing. Can't press update all, open or update buttons, it always chooses the space below it... for example in "My apps" view it selects the first app when trying to click "update all". In the app view, it selects "remove" when trying to click "update"... This issue seems to be only on Google Play, other apps work fine, even when tapping that same spot that is problematic in Google Play.
I don't know if I want to root yet, because if I'm going to send it to repair I have to do lots of work to unroot it (to remain warranty). But if it's the only option so be it. I wish the repair guys didn't mess something up last time. Other thing I'm guessing that the new stock ROM has some issues, but haven't seen reported them anywhere else...
What's the latest version of Google Play and where to get it? can I install new version of Google Play to unrooted system? Thanks in advance!

Gapps download: http://goo.im/gapps/
Make a backup first! Before you do anything made sure you can get back to this point. I think Google play is a part of the system partition so you can't uninstall without root. Bee careful, messing with that stuff can really make your life miserable if you can't troubleshoot!

Galaxy S4 will not boot past the load screen/Blue LoD

I tried to fix the google play store error by using the steps provided online (that seemed to work for most people) and now my phone will not boot past the initial galaxy screen. The screen goes blank and then I see a solid blue LED light at the top left of the phone.
I would like to know if backing up files at this point is possible, because I'm assuming the only true fix is a factory reset.
I was told that android has a built in fail-safe that would still allow me to access the files through a PC via USB. That has not worked for me. My computer shows nothing. I wonder if there is a way to reinstall just the android operating system (much like you would do with a windows pc) so that no files are erased and just the OS is reinstalled.
I've tried booting in safe mode, tapping the menu button doesn't do anything.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated. I'm ok with performing a factory reset, I'd just like to back up images and audio files before doing so.
Thanks

What play store error were you trying to fix and what exactly did you do to try and fix it?
It sure sounds like you've managed to wipe the internal memory clean. If so your only hope is to use Odin to restore it back to stock. If it works it'll work great but you will lose everything on the phone. Though again it really sounds like you have nothing on the phone.
The only other thing to try would be using Odin to flash a recovery. Then boot into recovery and see if you can back up the data partition. If that works you can use the recovery to reinstall a ROM.
Do people not do nandroid backup anymore?
☞ Sent from here☜???
The error I kept getting said "insufficient storage space available."
I had over 3 gigs of space left on my phone's internal memory.
I tried all of the obvious stuff before even seeking help online (clearing cache, making sure the system memory wasnt taken up).
Anytime my phone would attempt to update an app it would fail and remove the app entirely. Amazon Mobile was the first to go. It's only a 5Mb app and it said I didn't have enough storage space...yet I could download a 100Mb app I didn't already have and it would work fine.
I tried online suggestions like removing my google account from my phone, reverting the app store back to the stock version, re-adding the google account, then rebooting, and then my phone stopped working.
I'm pretty sure I know exactly what caused my phone not to be able to boot anymore though. Some people online had success using a google play store market fix app that is on the play store itself (not some sketchy site no one's ever heard of). I tried that, then when I rebooted it seems like my phone was bricked. A lot of people had said that app worked for their GS4's.
Any suggestions? I wish I could just reinstall android, get the files, then restore to factory conditions (if necessary).
I still have no idea what this problem is that you were trying to fix. I have never heard of this.
Still, using Odin to restore your phone to stock will work. Just flash the .tar file in Odin and it will be like you just took the phone out of the box.

The number error that came up with apps failed to update was error 923, which is a pretty common one people had trouble with. I tried every solution I could find, and this is what happened
I wanna help you. I really do. But I can't do anything without knowing the step by step details of what you did to get to this point.
Without that info there is no way to help you back out of thsi without a full wipe. So you are stuck with using Odin to do a full restore.

The step by step details of what I did are a couple posts back (I tried online suggestions like removing my google account from my phone, reverting the app store back to the stock version, re-adding the google account, then rebooting, and then my phone stopped working).
After that I tried a couple of the apps on the google play store that are supposed to be 1 click fixes for the google play store update error. That was my mistake. A lot of people had success with those 1 click fixes, but thats what I believe bricked my phone. I would tell you which app specifically but I can't access my phone (obviously) and they won't come up on the PC version of Google Play search.
Thank you for your desire to help. Is there any other method of communication we could use that might be more efficient for me to be able to answer your questions? IM or fbook chat or something?

I just gave up and wiped all data. I gotta have a working phone for work tomorrow. Trying to download the stock firmware for a full restore. It's taking FOREVER.
Revert to stock : Complete
Hate that I lost everything, but I shoulda been more responsible with backup in the first place. I am with my computers, typically am with my phone, but I was foolish enough to wait until I could get a great deal on a high capacity micro SD card...silly silly me.

My 'new' used phone went rogue today! Downloaded 9 apps by itself!

So... my phone I just bought off Swappa downloaded a bunch of games and a few other apps by itself today!
It's stock and locked and s-on (presumably).
I used it as an alarm clock this morning and it was normal. Later when I got to work when swiped to unlock the lock screen I got a message that I needed to reboot to finish updating the lock screen. So I did. Didn't think anything about it and started working.
Later when I went to the phone it had on either the lock screen or the home page after I unlocked it a window that said "recently downloaded" and there was about 6 games and a few other apps (hotels.com and RetailMeNot for example) in there! I did not download those! (pics attached)
Last night I downloaded My Backup Pro and either last night or this morning I downloaded Swype. That's it. Is there a way to see when the app was downloaded? I can't find a way in the app manager.
How did this happen? I checked Play and Amazon Apps and none of those games show as being "my" apps. They are not games I would ever have played or downloaded. I see other Verizon apps that show up after "Zoe", is it possible those were updated/downloaded as an update automatically and the games and other apps came with them?
Wondering if it has anything to do with the previous owner? The phone was factory reset 1/4/16, when I bought it.
I can boot to bootloader and go to download mode. The screen does say:
*** LOCKED ***
*** S-ON ***
When I tried recovery mode I got a red triangle. Is this normal or does this mean the phone had been unlocked/s-off/rooted before and then made to look like it hadn't? Or does it just mean I don't have a custom recovery on it?
I did read something about a red triangle in a unlocking/s-off tutorial thread in the general M9 forum and that someone holding some combo of buttons got them past it but I don't think I'll do anything at this time... it just booted up after being on that red triangle while I was typing this.
Anyway.... I really want to know how those apps got on here! I googled and couldn't find anything elsewhere about this, just push notifications and app shortcuts and automatic updating, but these apps weren't on here before.
Side note: Is it worth using a hardware tester app on this to check it out? It all seems to be in working order. Well, other than it being possessed!
Thanks!

Safest way to re-lock bootloader

What is the safest way to go about re-locking my bootloader? The reason I ask is that many apps on my phone just don't seem to work right, some refuse to open, some crash immediately upon opening, some I have to touch the screen multiple times to go back etc. Trying to figure out what the cause would be and thinking of re-locking the bootloader and factory resetting to see if that fixes it.
Thanks.

Do the factory reset first before even thinking about locking the bootloader to see if that fixes things. Even then don't lock it!
However, if you must lock it, be full factory stock with no mods or root and stock recovery. Leave OEM unlocking and USB debugging ON until your finished locking it. Good luck to you.

Don't relock the bootloader!! You'll just be asking for trouble and a possible brick. The problem you're having with apps has nothing to do with the bootloader being unlocked. If you're thinking of factory resetting then flash the stock firmware with fastboot. That'll accomplish the same thing and will also put a fresh system on your device.
Thanks, will try the factory reset first and avoid locking the bootloader if at all possible. I have my suspicions on the bootloader causing any issues with the apps, and sounds like it is not that, so am happy to leave it alone. Some of the apps it does not bother me, but for example I picked up a DJI drone and the DJI Go 4 app gets stuck in a loop constantly on my phone, yet works perfectly on my tablet. Figured trying getting the phone as close to factory as possible would be a place to start with figuring it out, just not looking forward to having to re-install all the apps!!

Is your tablet on pie? There are apps that have not been updated to support pie os. I'm guessing a drone app hasn't been updated.
Good point, the tablet is not on Pie. Is there a way to check if an app is updated? For example Stringify does not open at all, just hangs on the splash screen until Android asks if I want to close it, yet my phone has a permanent notification that it's running (it used to open). IFTTT will open and work, but after I create a new applet, it shows recommended applets, but won't let me back out of that without clicking it dozens of times. There are other apps that just hang in random spots as well. Figure if I can quickly check if they are updated, that may help.

I don't know of a good way. I just looked at stringify in the play store and it seems lots of people are having issues, including one who specifically referenced it not working on pie.
Looks like a factory reset did the trick, both Stringify and DJI Go appear to be working, what is now causing me problems is that I no longer have Samsung Wear and cannot find it to install it, which without it, makes my watch all but useless.
