Is GWallet safe yet? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I've been fretting about this for far too long and I want my question laid to rest for once and for all.
I am running stock 4.0.2 rooted and boot loader unlocked. I want to install the google wallet apk without worrying about it messing up and giving me the secure element error. Can someone please aid a fellow ever-worrying flasher?
And yes, I have a backup to rely on.

There's no guarantees. Essentially to be absolutely safe you need to wait until Google releases something official.
The error occurs after installing another rom with a wipe or after a factory reset. The theory is to make sure to press reset within Google Wallet so that it deletes the info off the Secure Element's memory. This is still just a theory, no guarantee..
You should watch the main thread for the most up to date info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365360

To add to Royal2000H:
Even if you reset Google Wallet from within the app, it will still re-initialise the secure element. There's an ADB shell command that will reset it properly.

You need to download and install the Android SDK (software development kit). The ADB (Android device bridge) drivers and software are included with it. Sorry I don't have a link handy for you, maybe in the morning if someone else hasn't posted one.

He said he does know how to use ADB.
The command is in the thread I linked.

perhaps make a backup then of your working ROM. cause i believe if you wipe or switch ROMs something happens that resets the NFC hardware and you may lose ability to use it again. i'm not totally sure of the details exactly though.

I have another experience to add to this thread.
Today my phone got stuck on the boot animation so I reloaded my current 4.03 ROM. When the device booted up after flashing the gapps.zip I tried using my NFC for a tag but it wouldn't work. Additionally, trying to access the "more..." settings menu froze the settings program.
At this point I tried multiple ROMS etc and had no luck getting my NFC to work until I restored my nandroid backup from long before wallet, the first day I got the phone.
I then flashed back to my 4.03 ROM and everything works fine until the Gapps.zip adds wallet which breaks the NFC again. Removing wallet from the .zip makes everything ok but there is apparently no way for me to get wallet working again. I tried the ADB command and everything, but whenever I reinstall wallet wallet itself just opens to a black screen that is frozen and it destroys my NFC(plus the settings freeze)
Is there anything else I can try? Is my secure element bricked forever(meaning I should exchange)? Or should I hold on until google releases an official .apk?

Thanks for posing the question
I actually, using a link from here, installed Google Wallet and It is working just fine for me but my phone is stock rom and unrooted (LTE Edition), So I'll be paying close attention to this thread because I might decide to root this phone in the future.

Google Wallet 'Error adding card'

I was one of the first people to install Google Wallet on their Nexus. I live in London, but at the time, Wallet worked perfectly. I purchased McDonald's food on two separate occasions using the free $10 from Google. This was all on ITL14F firmware.
I then decided to reflash my firmware, so that I could cleanly update to ITL14D via OTA. After this, I tried flashing the Google Wallet zip with CWM again. Everything seemed to work fine, until I tried to re-add my Google Prepaid card. Ever since, I simply get 'error adding card' when trying to add the Google prepaid card. This happens even if I flash back to ITL14F or update to 4.0.2 using the clean APK.
There seems to be at least one other person on XDA with this problem. Is there a solution? It's possible that it's now a hardware issue, and that perhaps Google have blocked my phone's IMEI/NFC chip - I've tried adding cards with two different Google accounts, but I get the same error. But it's difficult to confirm this, since Google's customer services have always sucked so hard. Wallet still shows the cross-border $0.02 fees for the purchases, but not the actual purchases like it used to.
I just checked my Google account settings and under my Android devices I noticed that "com.android.nfc3" is backed up by Google on my Nexus. Could this be the issue?
I have a nandroid backup of my system prior to first installing Google Wallet on ITL14F. Could I extract 'com.android.nfc3' and put it into my current firmware?
Your in london. That's the issue

I have the same problem. I've flashed back to other ROMs and tried pre TI restore and post. Done it through with ME set to TMobile and connected through WiFi on my US IP router. I'm thinking about trying to add a Prepayed MC to see if that will work.
Might toss in my TMobile Sim at some point as well to see if that helps.
So what is the score with Google Wallet app use in the UK? I know its not supported on the nexus anywhere in the world and the app is not supported in the uk on any phone but what i really want to know is...
1) can you add funds to the prepaid card?
2) where can you use it?
3) Is there likely to be a permanent problem with the phones getting blacklisted if indeed that is whats happening with people who can no longer get the app to work.
Currently i have it running using the market enabler and apk method but have since read reports of some secure chip outside the control of the os which may be preventing people using the app. I dont want to find out that once GW is officially supported on the GN in the UK that i can no longer use it. I was also hoping to flash some roms but sounds like that might be dodgy too.
Google Walltet Problem
Well I added my google wallter applicated on my phone yesterday. I set it up, I added google prepaird card, I got the 10 dollars on it and then that evening I unlocked my phone which wiped everything of my phone. I re-installed the application and when I go to add the google prepaid card, it says error adding card.
Is there anyway to fix this?

i think i figured it out i was having the same problem i did the steps in the adb shell to remove it but did not re-add it. then returned back to stock(4.0.1), locked bootloader. unlocked boot loader booted up 4.0.1 updated to 4.0.2 then i unlocked boot loader rooted and added wallet.apk from post on here it hung on adding card for about 5 mins the next time i check it was working again. google wallet looks like it will not work on non stock roms. any questions pm me

Same here.
Luckily it hasn't locked me out of NFC yet.
I called and talked to two people so far over at Citi. They tried to reset it on their end or something, not really sure.
I was told to reset in the app via the menu in wallet and I've done that multiple times and nothing has happened. They told me they would get in contact with the same person whom I talked to the first time and they'll contact Phil. So I'll give an update when I hear something.

I was on the phone with Citi last night and she told me that Google's servers were telling Citi that it's an insecure device so it won't work. So she told me to try and unrooting it and putting it back to stock to see if it works. Oddly I did that and it hasn't worked yet.
Not at least no NFC errors yet.

Secure Element Concern

Like most of you I am a flashing addict. I'm always looking for a ROM that is a small step ahead of the rest. This Google Wallet Secure Element Hoopla going on with the Gnex right now is concerning. I don't use Wallet yet. There just aren't enough places yet that I can really use it but one day I might want to give it a try. For this reason i'm concerned about continuing to flashing ROMs as I normally would.
When I first got the phone, I loaded the Wallet apk on the stock image and launched it to see how it worked. To this date I have never used it to purchase anything. I flashed a few ROMs after that and I did launch the app once to see if the version that was built into that specific ROM still worked. I flashed a few more ROMs since and it sits unconfigured currently (I get the Welcome to Google Wallet screen that has the "Get Started" button).
I"m hoping someone can educate on the latest that we know on why this error occurs and if I should be concerned. What do I need to do to keep from bricking my Google Wallet?
1. Uninstall the app right after flashing?
2. Remove the app from the ROM prior to flashing?
3. Freeze the app with Titanium?
4. Hit the Get Started button, configure it then run through the deactivation process that I have read about in one of the forum posts.
5. Turn off NFC immediately after flash
6. Don't worry about it since I don't ever launch or use Google Wallet?
7. Any other options that I haven't thought of?
From what I can tell you are supposed to nandroid and probably backup the app with titanium while it is in its working state. Then open up wallet and reset wallet from within the app (not clear data from app manager). Then uninstall wallet and flash whatever rom you want. Keep your backup just in case. In your position I wouldn't sign into wallet until they understand more what is going on. It may or may not already have you locked out of the secure element when you sign in again, and a fix might come along in the mean time and save the secure element.

What good does doing a nandroid and titanium backup of the app? Its not like the backup will help if you get the secure element error from what I hear.
I'm confused about the next part. You said I need to launch wallet, sign into it then reset it. Then in your next statement you say to not sign into google wallet. The two things seem to be contradictory. Did I misunderstand? How I know if I am already broke or not? At what point do you receive the secure element error? I don't suppose there is a way to know for sure without risking causing the error by launching wallet?
I don't have a problem not using wallet until this is resolved. I just want to make sure that not using it is sufficient to protect it from damage.
Come on Devs. Someone has to have some updated information on this issue and how it can be prevented?
The question is actually simpler than I made it.
1. If you don't launch Google Wallet after flashing a new ROM is there a possibility for damage or do you need to launch it then run the reset procedure?
Anyone? Is the Secure Element issue not a problem anymore. I've been sitting in this holding pattern for weeks. I really want to start flashing again. Any update?
Same concerns here, I've actually installed and activated Google Wallet. Haven't actually 'used it yet' but from what I can tell all is good. This looming issues is all that's preventing me from jumping back into the custom rom scene I enjoyed so much while having the OG Droid. I hope some more info comes of this. Really would like to try some custom roms to try and solve these random reboots... Getting old... and more frequent.
I've successfully changed roms after using google wallet. I was originally on Android Revolution when I first used it via the APK method. To update to a new rom you need to login and reset google wallet from inside the app. (from what I understand this erases all traces from the secure element)(There is also an adb command to release secure element or something but I didn't use it. That's all I did reset from inside google wallet then didn't login again until I was on a new rom. This has worked for many and I haven't read about anyone bricking the element doing it this way but I'm still not responsible if damage occurs. All this information is in the thread for installing google wallet if you would have used the search function.

This is helpful info for people that use Google Wallet but what about us that don't ever launch it. If we flash a new ROM Google Wallet is usually installed. If we don't launch and configure it do we risk any damange by flashing a new ROM or do we have to login, configure it then do the reset everytime we flash a ROM regardless?

Jelly Bean, Google Wallet, Forever initializing !

Well the title is pretty self explanatory.
I forgot to reset google wallet before wiping my device from ICS 4.0.4 where it was working 100%
Wipe, flashed a JB based ROM with some mods (Made by ...Awesome...)
let Google Wallet update, been stuck at initializing
I tried force-restoring my Titanium Backup version
I tried force closing, wiping the app's data
Rebooting causes the wallet to open automatically and reinitialize forever.
What else can I start doing to get this to work?
Thanks!
Did you do a nandroid backup before flashing JB? If so, restore that, reset wallet, then reflash JB.

The same thing happened to me. I tried to reset wallet before flashing a new rom, but it hung at the 2nd to last progress step. After rebooting, it acted like it reset, so I flashed a new rom. Since then, it hasn't worked. I restored a Nandroid and tried resetting again, only to have it hang again. Not much I can do since I'm on Verizon and it's not supported. I've just given up at this point. It must be something with the secure element. I'm just glad I only had a dollar left on it lol.

If you get a secure element, you're pretty much SOL. I don't recall a fix ever being released by devs nor Google as it seems to be a hardware problem (you've been locked out of it). To be able to reuse GW you'll have to buy a new phone.

I've noticed a wipe zip package in the Android RevolutionHD Thread, "Super Wipe Lite"...
I personally don't like these as a result of a couple bad experiences where one wiped my recovery and semi-bricked a device. I'd just wipe through recovery.

Yeah, I haven't seen a secure element error in a logcat or from the wallet app, but I'm guessing mines broke. The thing that makes me mad is I was trying to reset wallet, but the app froze and would not finish (phone was still responding). This was on a stock rooted ROM as well. I guess I'll just have to stick to the RFID in my credit cards if I really feel like using a tap to pay (or my Nexus 7 in a month ).
I do wonder what it means for other apps that may eventually utilize the secure element. Is it just locked out for google wallet or all apps?
How does google wallet work in JB? I'm in Canada and want to use the market enabler with google wallet, but after installing both apk from an explorer, the wallet app doesnt show up.
Same here. Wallet works with marketaccess (better than enabler IMO) on ICS but wallet wouldn't show up on Jellybean.

Reset Google Wallet?

Does anyone know if its possible to reset google wallet without being able to sign into the app?
I accidently flashed another rom without resetting GW
But I restored my previous rom where it was working before I tried to actually set up GW on the new rom
Im not getting any secure element errors the app just stays on activating account forever..
If anyone knows a way to safely clear out all the data so I can try it out on a new rom id appreciate it..

Well your kind of lucky right now but who knows what will happen when account activates. Dude i just backed a rom up on my gnex (didnt erase no data or nothing) and when i went into wallet as soon as i got in before even activating accnt i got the secure element error. If u get the " secure element not responding " error u need a new device to use wallet or a new motherboard. when u go into the app and hit menu on your phone then go to settings. See if u can reset there
Edit...and also resetting app data will not do anything it has to be reset from inside app
What would be proper procedure before you flash a new rom at all??
From what I understand first you remove all the cards in your Google Wallet than in Settings -> Reset wallet??
Would it be smart to clear cache (etc) through the settings -> Applications??
What I did was Delete The Google Wallet APK from /system/app folder then reinstalled it. Worked fine after that. Good Luck..

Yes but u got lucky you are playing with fire the way your supposed to do it is go into google wallet then hit menu on your phone. Go to settings then scroll down to reset google wallet. This will take down all your cards and every other piece of data in the money network. Thn after its done u will see the app is totally reset like how it looks when u first downloaded it. Now is when u can flash a new rom
I have been searching and i havent found anything
so i have the ATT s3, i rooted before and got wallet working. Even purchased many thing with it. Today I decide to unroot my phone to take in the OTA update from ATT. i did that and then i rooted again. I was trying to see if all my app works, so without thinking i open up wallet. It gave me some errors. so i went and reflash wallet to the newest file. And now the wallet icon is grayed, and it has a sd card mini logo next to it. when i click on it, it said " application not installed." I installed it many times over and still the same. i am not sure what to do.. i have been looking, seems like no one is having this problem.

You need to install the nfc libraries, there is a link somewhere, search for wallet threads.
OP - YMMV. You can wipe data/system/cache/dalvik and then install your rom and everything should be fine. I did the same thing before and hunted around and it seems that not resetting wallet does not lead to secure element breaking. Again YMMV.
i just fixed it. ( for the insufficient error)
so i flashed to stock, ota updated, then restore to factory.
Root the device, installed super user, updated super user
installed root manager
change you build.prop
flash newest hacked google wallet
activate google wallet account
change you build.prop back to factory.. all my cards are there except for the prepaid.
i dont if it works.. so i will update if it would.

You missing one step:
4-boot to recovery and flash SGS3-TW-US_variants-lib&nfc-fix.zip for ics touchwiz roms or SGS3-TW-US_variants-lib_nfc-fix-jellybean_4.1-1.zip for jellybean touchwiz roms and then wallet version com.google.android.apps.walletnfcrel.modaco.1.5-r87-v15.zip

4-boot to recovery and flash SGS3-TW-US_variants-lib&nfc-fix.zip for ics touchwiz roms or SGS3-TW-US_variants-lib_nfc-fix-jellybean_4.1-1.zip for jellybean touchwiz roms and then wallet version com.google.android.apps.walletnfcrel.modaco.1.5-r87-v15.zip
(for CM9/10, I9300, aokp, aosp roms just flash the wallet zip)

Ok, so I did everything I had to do......I got to the point of adding the card.....I added my card.
When I go online I see the Galaxy Nexus showing on my Google Wallet account.
I then went to steps 9 and 10 and I returned my settings to the old Galaxy S3 ATT settings....now my Google Wallet is saying unsupported device.

Google Wallet is supposed to say unsupported device if your device is unsupported. This is unavoidable. You can still use Google Wallet just fine, though.
No, I mean I cant even open the app because it has a popup that say unsupported on your device and network, I click ok, and it kicks me out.......as if I never rooted my phone and installed.
I went back to the Galaxy Nexus build.prop and it works fine when I leave that alone. But the minute I change it back to the original build.prop.....it starts the unsupported thing again and not able to open app.

I have been working on this Google Wallet thing with no luck.......maybe I am just retarded.
I gave in an rooted my phone. I have SuperSU, ROM Toolbox Lite, Root Browser Lite, and Root Explorer installed.
Ok, so it started as unsupported.....rooted and that fixed that problem. Now, it just goes to add account. I select my email address, then it goes to an error "insufficient secure element privileges for this system image (release-keys).
I the rooted ROM. I changed the build.prop to Galaxy Nexus thing.....and I download a new APK com.google.android.apps.walletnfcrel.magn2o.1.5-r75-v6.apk and copied that to the system/apps folder.......still no luck......what am I doing wrong? Does Google just hate me? I just don't get this....can someone please suggest my best opinion......I have dug through all the posts and tried 100 different things and can't figure this out.
PLEASE HELP....

Samsung Galaxy S3 on ATT is not supporting Google wallet. That why we using diffrend one by changing build.prop to make wallet work.
Do not restore you nandroid after your wallet is working just restore your build.prop
In my google Wallet account my phone is showing as Nexus too but wallet is working.
I left wallet open, then restored my build.prop. everything has worked great. I dont even have the unsupported device notice
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

That is the issue...all I did was go back into build.prop and changed the values back. I don't believe I even made a nandroid. Actually I am not even really sure what a nandroid is.
