I recently bought my Galaxy Nexus with CM11 already installed. As of right now I am running the latest nightly "December 17, 2013). I have never had the chance to test out any ICS or JB ROMs.
What I want to know is if Kit Kat 4.4.2 is the fastest/smoothest ROM currently out for the GNexus or is the older ROMs much more faster/smoother? I do understand that Kit Kat isn't an official ROM and that we've lost official support from Google.
I NOTICED A GOOD AMOUNT OF LAG WITH THIS ROM AND WOULDN'T MIND DOWNGRADING IF THERE'S A MUCH FASTER/SMOOTHER ROM ALTHOUGH I RATHER STICK WITH KIT KAT (since its the latest).

If it had CM11 on it already, it must have a custom recovery already, so the best option for you is create a full backup, and then try flashing other roms untill you find one that suits you.
Frankly, a tiny bit of lag is acceptable to me, as long as I have the latest version of Android. Mine is at 4.2.2 right now. I don't notice any real difference in speed from previous roms.
All you can do is try some out. Polling to see what others get won't tell you how things run on your phone with your apps.

Thanks for the response but my post isn't intended to be a poll. I simply want to know if ICS or Jelly Bean ROM is faster/smoother than Kit Kat since Kit Kat isn't an official ROM. Not everybody has the time nor the patience to flash a bunch of different ROMs/kernel combinations and go through the process of restoring data, apps, accounts etc. NO OFFENSE

i am now using parandroid rom , a 4.3 gelly bean , super fast and stble rom , with a lot of tweaks , very good battery life ( can last 4 hours screen on with web surfing and whatsapp ) ...
the main disadvantage ( which is not related to the rom itself ) is the wifi issue , i am a new user of the Gnex also , but i was shocked with the weak wifi signal comparing to older mobile phones ( i had the Desire HD ) , i've read a lot about the wifi issue which is almost related by most of the posts and threads to the jelly bean update , and i am thinking about giving ICS or KK a try as the wifi reception means a lot to me , the wifi router is quite far from my room and with this jelly bean software i am unable to connect , while i was able to connect easily using my old DHD .
so if you have your wif router close enough , try the parandroid rom , it's brilliant ...
by the way , any thing to say about wifi reception in KK ?

Thanks for the response. The WiFi reception isn't that good. I've noticed the same with my Nexus 4 (that I recently sold). It may just be a software issue since the N4 was an LG product and obviously the GNexus a Samsung device. Don't get me wrong, Kit Kat is a cool ROM but it seems a bit laggy for me. It's stable enough as a daily ROM though. Maybe I'm being a bit picky.

In my opinion (I tried many ROMs so far) 4.1 is the smoothest and has best performances in overall. For me it would be 4.1>4.3>4.4>4.2>4.0

Currently Im on 4.3, SlimBean Build 2.2.
Back in time, when I was on 4.1 I used stock, minco and Liquidsmooth (and Paranoid android 2.x for some short time)
what version or/and rom has the best wifi reception so far ?
I would say 4.1, stock or any AOSP based ROM, but it's fact that Galaxy Nexus has bad Wi-Fi radio, and custom ROMs and kernels can't change it significantly

When flashing I installed in the following order:
ROM
Gapps
Transformpack
Kernel
Not sure if it makes any difference, but just remember to make a back up of your current ROM and have another functioning ROM zip file on your device before flashing, just in case.
LOL
Also highly suggest running in tablet mode.

No offense to you but if you want to know what the best rom for your device is then you have to gain some time and patience to flash different roms, or in the very least read up about them on the threads here on XDA yourself. This is a developer community meant for adults that want to gain and share knowledge of how things work on mobile devices. This is not where you come to have answers spoon-fed to you because you are too lazy to take some time and figure things out for yourself. No one will ever be able to tell you what is the best for you, except yourself. If you don't have the patience then you should use the Nexus Toolkit, flash back to stock, lock your device and enjoy how the rom runs because those that are meant to be in this community have patience and make time to test what works for them. I may come off rude but this is just how it is, too many users come in here now and expect things on a silver platter, that is not how XDA works.
Do you know how much time and effort goes into building roms and kernels, or how much time people put into testing applications and settings in order to share their experience with others? It is kind of selfish to disregard those people by claiming you don't have enough patience to put some effort in yourself.
I have put months and months into just refining custom kernel settings that help users to gain optimal performance without sacrificing battery, lots of members come to my thread looking for help, if I decided I didn't have the time or patience to create a thread that gives a good base for setting up a custom kernel then alot of new users would be in the dark on what to do. Contributing is what makes this forum great, not looking for others to make the effort and for you to reap the benefits.
I think it's rather unfair that all the people on this thread have had to provide info and links to you when you could just as easily use the XDA search function and find them yourself. You've been a member since 2010, you should know better.

I've had my sprint gnex for about a week now. maybe two weeks, I forget. Anyway, 4.0.4 ICS is mind-blowing compared to 2.3.5 that I had on my rooted S-on Evo 4g (I did de-bloat the stock rom). The fact that it's not a Sense or TouchWiz rom is the best part of all, and really I find that I have no desired functionality that would require rooting or flashing of any kind. However... a lot of the additions in JB look really awesome and I'd like to check into those at some point in the near future. I'm comfortable with the idea of rooting and flashing. After I rooted my Evo I may have actually laughed out loud for being as paranoid and anxious as I was.
Here's my concern: after trudging through the sprint gnex dev forum, there's a lot of roms and kernels available. At this point I'm not so concerned with a kernel, but I'd like some help narrowing down the options to one or maybe two roms to get started with. Basically I'm looking for one that's as close to what Google would give me if they were releasing to sprint devices. I would also be cool with one that's as close to what sprint might release in an official OTA.
I was never crazy about trying CM roms (or other AOSP based ones for that matter) on the Evo just because I wasn't crazy about having to flash back and forth between stock roms for PRLs and profiles. I'm not sure how often that would really have to be done, but I won't consider that a deal breaker if it gets me into an ideal rom.

MMuzzy's AOSP is as close to OTA stock as you'll find. In both form and build quality.
Like the above, CM10 is as stock as you'll find. There are other very close to stock with internal performance tuning.

I prefer AOKP to CM, but the last few AOKP builds have been horrible on battery and in terms of someone wanting a custom experience and not really knowing what they want, I point them to CM.
paranoidandroid is just cm10 with more options lol
I'm trying to be a good forum member and search out my own answers before posting them, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding much info about CM10 from their own website. First of all, they don't have a subforum for the samsung gnex at all (just the google variant), and most of what I have skimmed across on the forums seems to be related to either CM 7 or 9. Should I be looking in the Google Galaxy Nexus CDMA forum over there? Do we have much here on xda for CM10 aside from a dev thread?
Still need to look at paranoidandroid, I'm not opposed to a few extra options on top of what CM10 has already
Edit:
Paranoid looks like awesome, like the ability to use the tablet UI, but I think I'll wait for that one to mature a little more since I'm just getting started with roms!
I'm also gonna have to say mmuzzy's stock AOSP ROM. It's what we would have had from Google if we had AOSP support, IMO.

its a nexus device, no need to hack anything to get 4.2.1 running, so 4.2.1 isnt broken at all. every rom listed in the development section is safe. you can even compile 4.2.1 from aosp yourself and run it if you wanted to. recommendations.. try out a bunch, find whats good for you. there are no bad roms.

see, the problem with these kinds of threads start with this statement. best rom there is according to whom? i dont even think its close to the best rom. in fact, to me its rather bloated. best rom is subjective. every person has different needs, so every person has their own ideas to what best is. there is no best rom, theres only the best rom for you.
Stock ROM, most solid and safe, can't go wrong.
all the 4.2.1 roms i have tried are stable.. so try them and stick with the one YOU like
hi im new to all this rooting and flashing roms and right now i have cm10 installed and running smoothly but i want to get android 4.2 and i want to know what the best and most stable rom out there is the last time i flashed the rom i used goomanager and did it only using my phone so if possible a rom that i can find in goomanager and also can i also have touchwiz installed i liked that about the stock s3 and the rom i have right now doesnt have touchwiz...thank you

More or less you just have to research about each different rom and see which you think fits you best. Read the threads and comments, bugs, fixes, updates, etc. Watch and read reviews and pick one you think does what you need it to.
OK is it better to get the nightly builds or stable builds... I don't want a lot of crashes

Task650 4.2.1 ROM is by far the best out there, he is one of the best developers on XDA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684&nocache=1
To reiterate, your best bet is to test a few for yourself. I personally am a huge fan of Task650s AOKP 4.2.1. It is perfectly stable and full of options to suit your needs.
i would also recommend tasks aokp 4.2.1 really smooth daily driver
i have the same question, what rom can you recommend? battery life is a big factor for me. thanks.
Task's is good yet I really enjoyed vanilla rootbox as well. I'm not a huge fan of the look of AOKP in general but either would be a nice place to start. If you do decide to go back to a 4.1.2 ROM all your files are stored in a directory called "0" so you will need to use a file explorer to move them back to the main folder.
task's 4.2.1 for sure
For me, toss up between Root box and LiquidSmooth

For me rootbox
SGSlll AT&T
My advice is try them out.
No one phone is alike and no one user is alike
Battery and performance rely more on the user than the kernel/ROM
Don't expect the battery to last days if your screen is going to be on A LOT..expect a couple hours of juice..
And don't expect maximum performance with out a modified kernel and trying to conserve battery.
I'm on RootBox with KT kernel all balanced out...
Try your own OC/Voltage setting to what you'll be happy with

No ROM is best because no 4.2 has working bluetooth Lol but yeah I think out of the available options, Task's for sure.
i think i have a bug or addiction to flashing new roms i am all new to the android scene and i have had my phone for about a month and all i do is swap rom every other day. Iv'e got the bug man!! the best rom i have found that works for me is the Wicked rom Port from T-Mobile i had 1d and 5hours use on a full battery the other day i also like the galaxymod rom too but cant get reception i did at first then lost it on the second day
those are my 2 favorites if you like TW based roms..

Hey
As a lot of you knows, we have some really annoying problems since the update on 4.2x , mainly concerning battery life.
I was bored to try differents kernel trying to find some that would give me an acceptable battery life.
I went back to a pure stock 4.1.2, stock kernel. I'll take a stable kernel, maybe airkernel (stable vers) or Leankernel for 4.1 JB, but i can yet say that my battery life is a lot better!
I simply would like to know if some of you made the same choice, for what alternative and for what reason
Edit:
And if you have a custom kernel, what is your favorite on this 4.1 JB version, i'm actually searching for the most battery friendly and stable one ^^
Thx!
Re: [Q] Who is already running 4.1.2 by choice ? :)

I second this request - I am at a point where I would throw my phone into oncoming traffic because it lags so bad. The battery cannot make it past 2pm on a good day, and have grown to really hate the "nightly" ROMs. I want to stay rooted, and run the latest stablest version of android on it. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
There is no best ROM. These threads arent even allowed. Just try them a dev has put a lot of work in it.

I love Paranoid Android. In PA3.99 RC2 (Android 4.3.1), there are a lot of feature and customization. In PA4.0-BETA (Android 4.4.2), there are a few extra feature but nothing relevant at the moment. Devs are working in recode features, but they say that want to reduce kanging. You can try CyanogenMod or AOKP (the last has a lot of customization) por any derive from that. You have to try them and then decide what you prefer.

I would suggest reading what other users have experienced in the thread and determine which one you want to try. This has been the only 4.4 rom that I have used for more than a few hours. I am weird about customization so I tend to find one with lots of features and stick with it for a while. (trying to curb my flashing addiction.)

CM-Remix has a lot of cool features, probably would be my favorite but I can't get the wakelocks figured out even after reflashing etc. For me, slimkat is a second in features but most better in terms of wakelocks (for me). Translates into almost double the bat life for me
These type of threads are not allowed on XDA.

CM is awesome. Check it out. Love this ROM.
For now best rom was dirty unicorn, but after some days it was really slow

Agreed. The lag killed me after a couple days of usage.

I second this request - I am at a point where I would throw my phone into oncoming traffic because it lags so bad. The battery cannot make it past 2pm on a good day, and have grown to really hate the "nightly" ROMs.

I'm running stock 4.3 with Franco kernel r392 (for bigmem as r394 doesn't have it) and its the smoothest combo you'll ever have.
I usually get 3 - 3 1/2 hours of SOT.
as for nightlys, I agree, they do suck and I hope the PA team gets a stable/milestone with HALO and all of that good stuff soon... like REAL soon.
trying soooo hard not to flash everything any anything.
Which one is the most stable then, if I may ask. Or am I still better off using 4.3?

They all are. Only Paranoid Android 4 is still in beta but that should be stable too. There is no best ROM or most stable one. It depends on your preference and phone (every Galaxy Nexus responds diffrently to certain settings/roms/kernels) so please stop these threads..

I understand very well that such questions may annoy people, but my question is actually more specific. I'm not looking for the best rom with the most features. I just want to upgrade to 4.4. But I'm afraid to do so, as I use my alarm a lot (to wake up for exams in time). If the phone randomly reboots and the alarm is gone for some reason that would be very silly. So I'm looking for a phone that has the smallest chance of such situation (alrm gone) happening.
So CM11 nightly has the smallest chance of that happening?
Thanks in advance.

From my own experience, CM11 doesn't have the smallest *chance* of that happening - because that NEVER happened to me at all. GNex is my part-time alarm clock and it always wakes me up at the right time. But yeah, because we install different apps and use different settings, YMMV

Re Best 4.4.2 Rom for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus
ParanoidAndroid 4 (BETA 3) is working fine on my Maguro. Because there are not so much options right now (because it's in beta), I'm using it with the Xposed module Gravitybox (KK). You could wait for the official PA 4 when it's out of beta, or give it a try: paranoidandroid.co.
