hi im new to all this rooting and flashing roms and right now i have cm10 installed and running smoothly but i want to get android 4.2 and i want to know what the best and most stable rom out there is the last time i flashed the rom i used goomanager and did it only using my phone so if possible a rom that i can find in goomanager and also can i also have touchwiz installed i liked that about the stock s3 and the rom i have right now doesnt have touchwiz...thank you
I have used root box slim and task and I keep jumping back to tasks 4.2 ROM. You gotta try them yourself every phone seems to work different and you won't know until u try..

More or less you just have to research about each different rom and see which you think fits you best. Read the threads and comments, bugs, fixes, updates, etc. Watch and read reviews and pick one you think does what you need it to.
OK is it better to get the nightly builds or stable builds... I don't want a lot of crashes

If you don't want a lot of bugs and such i would go with the stable builds.
You wld have to read the change logs to see.. But I would stick to stable.

Task650 4.2.1 ROM is by far the best out there, he is one of the best developers on XDA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684&nocache=1
To reiterate, your best bet is to test a few for yourself. I personally am a huge fan of Task650s AOKP 4.2.1. It is perfectly stable and full of options to suit your needs.
i would also recommend tasks aokp 4.2.1 really smooth daily driver
i have the same question, what rom can you recommend? battery life is a big factor for me. thanks.
Task's is good yet I really enjoyed vanilla rootbox as well. I'm not a huge fan of the look of AOKP in general but either would be a nice place to start. If you do decide to go back to a 4.1.2 ROM all your files are stored in a directory called "0" so you will need to use a file explorer to move them back to the main folder.
task's 4.2.1 for sure
For me, toss up between Root box and LiquidSmooth
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
For me rootbox
SGSlll AT&T
My advice is try them out.
No one phone is alike and no one user is alike
Battery and performance rely more on the user than the kernel/ROM
Don't expect the battery to last days if your screen is going to be on A LOT..expect a couple hours of juice..
And don't expect maximum performance with out a modified kernel and trying to conserve battery.
I'm on RootBox with KT kernel all balanced out...
Try your own OC/Voltage setting to what you'll be happy with
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
No ROM is best because no 4.2 has working bluetooth Lol but yeah I think out of the available options, Task's for sure.
i think i have a bug or addiction to flashing new roms i am all new to the android scene and i have had my phone for about a month and all i do is swap rom every other day. Iv'e got the bug man!! the best rom i have found that works for me is the Wicked rom Port from T-Mobile i had 1d and 5hours use on a full battery the other day i also like the galaxymod rom too but cant get reception i did at first then lost it on the second day
those are my 2 favorites if you like TW based roms..
A search would have answered this. Thread closed

I rooted and flashed my SGS3 yesterday to Kyan(?) because it looked like the most robust build.. it's nice but the data just didn't work so i had to revert back to original for now..
So it got me thinking.. which ROM do you recommend and why? and... Any idea how to fix the data issue?
AOKP because its nearly perfect and I haven't had any issues with it.

Second vote for aokp. Nearly flawless as is and updates are coming frequently also. Very smooth and buttery.... combined with ktoonzes kernel you can't get much better IMHO....

JB ROMs are not yet fully baked (Netflix doesn't work, screen flickering, etc.etc.), and other random annoyances depending on the particular ROM in question.
As a result, I've decided to stick with ICS ROM's for now and Ariel 2.0.4 seems to be about the cream of the crop from a combined feature/function perspective.
Just my $.02

That's good to know, but it doesn't change the fact that there are typically little quirks and wonky parts of JB ROMs that keep me from using one as a daily driver, hence my endorsing an ICS ROM below.
Netflix was just an example of what had been a common problem among early JB ROMs, and while it's cool that's been fixed, there are invariably other easter eggs that don't seem to exist in ICS custom ROMs, I guess is the point I was trying to make.
Of course, to each their own; what might be important to me might not be to the next person, but that's what makes the ability to flash any/all ROMs and then nandroid back if you don't like them, so cool.
-Ryan
I'm on KyanROM and has been good so far. Just put Ktoonsez kernel on coming from Faux so will be testing that combo out today

I use Kyan ROM because it is rock solid stable, has good battery life, takes away all of the bloat and lets me add back stock apps via CWM if wanted. I am waiting to go to an AOKP 4.0.4/4.1.1 build such as Task and Ktoonz or Cyangenmod. However, they all have bugs and I have very little tolerance for technology that does not cooperate with my expectations. So until the bugs are worked out, Kyan ROM for me.
which rom is the fastest without overclocking? I found that quadrant scores have been the best on stock. I've tried it on CM9, CM10 and kyan, but they all produce low scores. GTA 3 gets laggy on CM10 too, gonna try it on stock and see how it performs.
Rooted stock. ( debloated )
Tried aokp and cm10 both fantastic roms but auto brightness was a bit flaky on both so I can back to stock.

excuse me for my noob question, but how do you debloat stock rom?
Go in with a root enable file explorer and remove all the stock and carrier added apps that you don't want/don't use. You can also find different flashable zips that fix and/or enable/disable certain "features", such as the continuous wifi connected notification, enable native tethering, etc. A lot, if not all, of the customized stock roms include these and others by default. I'm actually downloading Ariel right now to try it out as it seems to have a lot of this done already.
I vote aokp, rock solid stable, and extremely smooth.
You should really try a cm based jellybean ROM, if you haven't yet, you'll be amazed by how fast and smooth it is compared to stock.
Ariel is the best stock rom nothing compares to it, its bug free free has aroma installer, where you can choose what mods you want to flash in cwm and has more features than any other stock rom hands down the best.

Im so glad you posted this.. i was about to post a question on a really good stock based rom. I'm currently using the cm10 one and it works awesome so far no issues but i would like to go back to touchwiz.
Just that the stock rom has a couple of things i really don't like. Mostly in the settings but if there was a way to tweak it i would go back.

no bugs or glitches, runs perfectly, and its stock based so you get the same look as before. It's also extremely debloated. Just remember to flash Ktoonsez kernel after flashing the rom.
It may not be stock based but I have always loved CyanogenMod and I'm currently using the Unofficial CM10.1 and the only problem is that the camera doesn't work.

I've tried a bunch. My favorite so far for both performance and battery life is AOCP.
I am not a fan of TouchWiz, but on a lark I flashed the Jelly Bean TW-based Loser ROM yesterday, and I have to say I"m impressed. I might stick with this for a while.
I really like cm10 but the wifi issues and screen wake up made me flash back to stock. Still trying to find a good stable rom with decent battery life. I would rather it have fewer features with no issues than tons of features with tons of bugs.
I'm really liking LoserRom everything works out of the box, it is fast, and the battery life is looking pretty good with KT kernel. But that's all I'm looking for right now. Stock based with killer battery. Check it out.

I have used many. I have used AOKP, LiquidSmooth, CyanogenMod, ParanoidAndroid, and ParanoidKANGDroid. I'd say out of all of them, AOKP was the smoothest, I just don't like it. On CyanogenMod, it would hang and reboot and sometimes WiFi was extremely weak, and it doesn't help that most AOSP ROMs are based off of CyanogenMod. I am waiting for CM10.1 to see what happens.

Is it possible to use a different version of the camera? OR do you have to use the version you are on? For instance I'm on 4.1.2 and like the camera with stock 4.1.1.
I'm using Slim 3.1 and I love it, I'm getting over 1 and a half day's worth of battery with normal use, texting, emails, surfing, youtube etc.
Using task650 aokp 4.1.2 with his underwear kernel is rock solid, so much customising and been getting retarded battery life usually 1.5 days with about 6 hrs on screen time. Plus able to use it for everything lots of calls, texts, navigation, wifi, youtube, gmail. Its awesome

When I had my SGS, I tried flashing many different ROMs but always went back to stock because I found every ROM was buggy in one way or another.
I also bricked my phone on a couple of occasions (was able to fix it) and decided that stock did everything I wanted, so I am sticking with stock (rooted) on the S3.

The unofficial CM10.1 JB 4.2 for d2att (ATT version of S3) has camera working as of this morning. Apparently photosphere isn't working, but that's a pretty unnecessary feature IMHO. So far it's my favorite ROM, and aside from having to tinker with the data settings, I haven't run into any bugs.
I'm running CM10.1 (4.2.1) with KT747 and I'm getting the best battery life and performance I've ever gotten with my phone to date. This also doesn't have any of the black screen issues or anything which kept me away from vanilla android roms for awhile. All the 4.1.2 ROMs I've tried sofar speak a lot to the future of android - INCREDIBLY smooth and fluid, great battery life and awesomely stable. Especially considering they're all still in beta, it's very impressive.
Only issues are that the camera doesn't work and data can be temperamental every so often. I'm currently at 1day 5 hours, 2 hours screen on time with 46% remaining. 192mhz-1728mhz with ktoonservative.
I'm actually gunna give Task's AOKP preview a try right now. I was running it before but left because of the black screen wake issues. I was hesitant about using the preview because of the call echo issue, but it's also present in CM10.1 apparently..

I just received my S3 a few days ago and have just now been following threads to scope the scene. I am aware that I can create a backup and play around with the ROM's myself, and I will do that actually. Before I do this I would like YOUR opinion on the top ROM and why. What I (personally) look for in a ROM is: stability, good battery time, performance/benchmarks, features, look & feel and more. Thank you very much and have a happy new year!
tldr; What is the best (US) Galaxy S 3 ROM based on stability, battery time, performance, features and look/feel.
That's a tough question as everyone has personal opinions of different Roms and each device will also handle each ROM different in my opinion this will only turn into a this ROM is better than that ROM thread and that is not good

It depends on what you are looking for from a ROM.
If you want stable stay with stock TW
If you want latest and greatest chose AOSP/AOPK Rom.
Both are now on 4.2 which is much smoother and faster than TW.
No bloatware of course. Better battery life with custom kernels etc...
CM 10.1 is great
Tasks AOPK is better IMHO at the moment. CM is updated nightly which is a plus it minus... Task updates his ROM less frequently but it's a lot more stable at the moment...
Which ever ROM you choose if not stock READ entire OP make sure you follow it to the T and then read all posts as they tell you all about bugs and workarounds

I always follow the instructions to a T, I want the best experience possible out of anything I flash ever. You mentioned better battery life with the Kernels, any experience with ktoonsez's or Task's kernel? Could you give me some estimate figures (example: 5 hours battery on stock, 8 on ktoonsez)
Running Illusion (CM based Rom) with the latest KT747 and no issues here, so I disagree with the guy above. I prefer stock android which is why I like roms like Task's AOKP and CM10.1 the most. It all comes down to preference.
Running Tasks AOKP 4.1.2. With lean kernel. Never crashes never any problems. Most stable custom ROM I've ever used. 4 hours screen on time, best battery I've ever gotten.

Thanks, orig dev I think was the only one I didn't click on.. Time is limited taking care of a 6month old..
This just ends up being a popularity thread.
I'm a huge AOKP/CM10 fan, but right now those ROM's don't have the one thing I need (USB-DAC) so I'm stuck with TouchWiz based ROM's.
I flashed Ultimatum ROM last week and have yet to have a single issue with it.
It's mostly stock with minor tweaks, so it SHOULD be a reliable ROM.
I then flashed a 23toggle mod with blue icons, so I at least have a good looking ROM also.
I find myself always restoring a debloated version of DG's m7 stock based rom with tasks kernel. I use rom toolbox as well to help tweak certain battery consuming apps. I usually lose 3-5% overnight on standby(7 hrs if I'm lucky and my kids let me). I think juice deffender helps me as well. Performance is pretty good but I'm a battery dork. The thread is probably back a couple pages now if you want to look at it. All of these dev's make great roms though. Try them all. Its called flashaholic and i'm a member.

I had the same question, but about the newer 4.2.1 roms. I want to upgrade, but i'm not sure which one will work best for me. Seems like Task and KTz joint is the most popular right now, but CM10 has been my daily. AS far as TW, I keep going back to Bacon Step with KTZ kernal becasue i use bluetooth alot and its my last TW backup. I want 4.2, but i need bluetooth to listen to my podcasts. What 4.2 rom has working bluetooth audio?
Had to clear that up.
I'm just interested in knowing what ROMs you guys are running, and why.
I'm not rooted yet (plan on doing that tomorrow)
but I'm looking for the most stable ROM with the best battery life.
With all of these threads and links, it's hard to keep up.
So I'm hoping to hear from the community.
I have no intentions of this thread turning into a "this ROM is better than X ROM because of Y Reason."
Just seeing what needs people have and the ROM(s) that fit those needs.
And I'm curious as to which one(s) have spectacular battery life!
Post away.

Im using Paranoidandroid, i felt like kangdroid was too bulky with too much extra stuff i didn't need/want. I like paranoid cause it seems pretty simple and smooth. But i have had some issues with random restarts, camera messing up, gallary messing up, and some other things i cant remember right now. I rooted for the first time like a week or so ago and i really like it. I just want more stability, best that i've used but im not satisfied. Plus the rom hasn't been touched since 11/21/12 so it could probably use some upgrades.
Anything is better than ATT stock JB, which sometimes drained in 20hrs.
Right now what im looking for though is a stock rom that has been stripped and streamlined. I have two things i need my phone for, Ustream/Livestream and taking pictures/video. Anything that is gonna crash unexpectedly or slow down because of so much extra junk is useless to me.

+1 I've researched almost all of the roms for our phone and i found that jellybam suits my needs. Plus i find that the mixture of ParanoidAndroid, AOKP, and Cyanogenmod is cool and makes for a lot of customization and features. It's a good rom pretty stable not much bugs or anything. And i'm also getting good battery life. I think the boot image should be fixed soon. But as with any rom it's all up to personal preference.
Battery life and stability are the two things I look for in a rom. 4.2.1 ROMs are the way to go unless you need Bluetooth streaming. Everything else has been near perfectly stable. Liquid smooth, tasks aokp, illusion and slimbean take your pick.

Do you know of any Touchwiz ROMs/kernels that drastically improve battery life?

Ive been using Task&Ktoonsez's Rom for quite a while now. hes always on top of getting things updated to the next version, and is really quick about getting bugs ironed out. if you look at the developer thread he can be a bit prickly, but his roms are great.
Hello
I am new to the root world and would like to get some advice on what I should run on my phone. I am currently running cm9 stable but am having some issues. So I don't know where to go from here.

I see a lot of posters here cheer for CleanGB so you might wanna check that out, as for me I always like to try the latest so now I'm sticking with CM10.1 preview!
The People's ROM is a good ROM. So is CM10 stable. But I'm running latest CM10.1 ROM and its amazing.

The Peoples Rom is a solid Rom with great battery life. All the CM roms have been great for me and CM10.1 is no exception, but I'd try a few to see what you like best.
Now should I just run the custom kernel and modem that comes with the cm rom? I'm having issues with mms and Wi-Fi tether

NEVER ask what's the best ROM!
They ALL are for the users that use them. No one can tell you what is the best for YOU. You need to read and decide for yourself if a ROM suits you.

Your modem does not change but the kernel will. The one that comes with CM10.1 is a 3.xxx based kernel and is smooth. I'd recommend running the rom as is for a few days and see how you like it.
I agree with you Kenny, but what an amazing work! everything is fast & fluid, colors are vibrant and beautiful.. I have been hanging around Epic forums for more than a year and this is the first time I saw something like this! you really had put a lot of work behind this, well done :good:
Been lurking and playing for a while now...
First off, I'm really impressed with the work the developers do here! OMG, it's giving my Epic new life and more. My wife like my phone so much, she asked me to root hers and put JB on it!
That being said, there's really a lot of choices, and almost every ROM makes a good daily driver. The question is what your threshold is for having things you're willing to put up with to get the cool new features these ROMs provide.
Here's my experience in the last 4 months - I started with CM9, and while I really liked it, I had some issues where it seemed to run hot at times. I added all the build.prop tweaks for increasing battery life, and once the stable version came out, I was pretty stoked. After a couple of weeks, I tried CM10 nightlies (my current ROM, 2013-01-20. I LOVE it! I added the 4.2 gapps camera and Gallery to enhance it a bit).
I expected the worst, because I work with developers and the term "nightlies" is never something we show to the public. In reality, aside from some initial issues with rebooting on earlier builds, it's been awesome.
This past couple of weeks, I decided to check out the waters and tried CM 10.1, and ran it for over two weeks - even put it on my wife's phone. It was like buttah until it randomly rebooted in the middle of a business call. I figure, once it goes to nightlies, I'll try it out again. Still itching, I tried ParanoidAndroid 4.1.2, and also AOKP Alpha 4.2.1 build. Both builds were stable and pretty polished, but battery life was better with CM10 - at least for the time-being. If you like to have lots of control over how your phone looks and acts, you can't go wrong with either ROM. I went back to CM10 mostly because it runs everything, especially Dead Space, which I couldn't get to work on any other ROM.
So, there's not really a "best" - it depends on what you want, and can put up with if there are issues.
