Not a Best ROM Thread - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Had to clear that up.
I'm just interested in knowing what ROMs you guys are running, and why.
I'm not rooted yet (plan on doing that tomorrow)
but I'm looking for the most stable ROM with the best battery life.
With all of these threads and links, it's hard to keep up.
So I'm hoping to hear from the community.
I have no intentions of this thread turning into a "this ROM is better than X ROM because of Y Reason."
Just seeing what needs people have and the ROM(s) that fit those needs.
And I'm curious as to which one(s) have spectacular battery life!
Post away.

I came from a S2 which is how I learned to root. Its fun. Flashing is addictive... really. I change roms when ever one has something new and cool I just gotta try but I can truly say that JELLYBAM is the best I have used as of now.... though im always looking. If you get over the broken boot up imiage its the best I have used (not that I tried them all) I get like 20percent drain from a entire day of use

I am running ParanoidKANGdroid right now, going on closer to a week on it. I have tried CM10.1 nightlies and the newest AOKP, as well as task650's AOKP, but my favorite so far is this one. It has the most customization I've found, which I really love. My only complaints are that I don't like the camera, the "desk clock", and it's only 4.2.1. So far my favorite though

Im using Paranoidandroid, i felt like kangdroid was too bulky with too much extra stuff i didn't need/want. I like paranoid cause it seems pretty simple and smooth. But i have had some issues with random restarts, camera messing up, gallary messing up, and some other things i cant remember right now. I rooted for the first time like a week or so ago and i really like it. I just want more stability, best that i've used but im not satisfied. Plus the rom hasn't been touched since 11/21/12 so it could probably use some upgrades.
Anything is better than ATT stock JB, which sometimes drained in 20hrs.
Right now what im looking for though is a stock rom that has been stripped and streamlined. I have two things i need my phone for, Ustream/Livestream and taking pictures/video. Anything that is gonna crash unexpectedly or slow down because of so much extra junk is useless to me.

+1 I've researched almost all of the roms for our phone and i found that jellybam suits my needs. Plus i find that the mixture of ParanoidAndroid, AOKP, and Cyanogenmod is cool and makes for a lot of customization and features. It's a good rom pretty stable not much bugs or anything. And i'm also getting good battery life. I think the boot image should be fixed soon. But as with any rom it's all up to personal preference.

Battery life and stability are the two things I look for in a rom. 4.2.1 ROMs are the way to go unless you need Bluetooth streaming. Everything else has been near perfectly stable. Liquid smooth, tasks aokp, illusion and slimbean take your pick.

I am on Task650's 12/23/12 build because I use Bluetooth media streaming (mostly Audible) extensively throughout the day, in my car. The newest version of Task's ROM is nice and solid, but I can't live without BT audio.
I will commit to daily JB ROM flashing when that issue is cleared up.

Not completely sure. Not something that I use. I've read people are having problems with it. I'm sure the cyanogenmod team is working hard on it and will probably have it working in the next few weeks.

I'm torn.
I love the Touchwiz Features I get now.
(S Beam, S Voice, Smart Stay, etc)
But I want AOKP 4.2.
Ugh. What should I do?
Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2

I enjoy touchwiz features too. They're not something I use everyday but I prefer being on 4.2. So many speed and battery life improvements.
Keep in mind you can usually find an app to replace touchwiz features. Like smart statusbar will allow you to show the status bar when in full screen mode.

Thanks for the input!
Do you know of any Touchwiz ROMs/kernels that drastically improve battery life?

Ive been using Task&Ktoonsez's Rom for quite a while now. hes always on top of getting things updated to the next version, and is really quick about getting bugs ironed out. if you look at the developer thread he can be a bit prickly, but his roms are great.

I am currently running wanam's 1.1 version of his stock-based ROM. Been running it for 2 days and has felt much smoother and battery friendly than stock! ATT and Samsung apps are flashable later through CWM which like. LOVE this ROM. Only known issue that I have seen is the 1080p recording for the camera. It does record in 720p though. Thanks!

I ran CM !0 for a few days but I used a Mac and MTP doesn't work so its a bit of a deal breaker for me, but in all fairness its Extremely stable to be an Alpha build. My first android phone was the G1 and then on to the Nexus One so i'm a sucker for AOSP based android roms and for Cyanogen Mod in general so ill be running it when the MTP gets sorted out on my Mac.
I tried Wanams rom, I remember him from my SGS2, Hes a great Dev & its really stable as well.
The best all around so far for me is AndroidUser00110001's Rom linked below. I've found the wifi disconnect problem that i was having with the other TW Roms is gone and it has had the best over all balance of performance and stability.

I have looked at it, and the one I have installed on my phone even has the Aurora designation I intend to use if I publicly release a rom for this phone, so we will see.
Also, son of a *****, godaddy didn't auto-renew my domain. Guess I will need a new one.

Definitely AOKP. Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean versions are awesome. I've yet to find any bugs that keep it from being a daily driver. In fact I've found none. But I haven't used it that in depth much, we shall see.
But I put my vote in for AOKP. By far the best, and I only flash for AOSP based ROMs anyways. :good:
AOKP JellyBean and ktoonsez JB kernel. Those guys rock. Never seen a preview work so well, looking to see what's to come.

[Q] What is a solid stable ROM for a light user?

My GF now has the S3, and she's very light in terms of tech savy. I flashed a CM10 nightly build for her to start her phone out, but it's been hanging and lagging a bit from time to time, and that more than anything else bothers her.
Should i just put her back on stock, or is there a great option that isn't so cutting edge but will be sure to be bug free and solid and smooth for her?
The issue is it's not in my hands so i can't play around with it a lot to test and see, she'll just complain if it doesn't work perfect lol.
I'd say Ariel or Kyan rom for normal use and you can throw on KT747 ICS touchwiz kernel as well. I wouldn't do any of the JB based roms atm if you want pure stability.

I like Slim ROM but it really comes down to personal preference. Take a couple hours and flash a couple different ones. Does she want TW or pure Android. There are just so many choices...it might be an interesting experience getting her to participate in the testing since it is her phone.

+1 for Task/Ktoonsez AOKP JB ROM - its flawless!
+1 for kyan. All the jellybean roms are sweet but always had issues with video recording (very low audio). For a lite user I would say stick to ICS.

If she likes CM10, I suggest flashing the "M" versions as those are the monthly stable builds (latest one was around 15th of October). Anyways AOKP is good, it was released a week or so ago and I find it very stable and battery life is better than CM10 (in my own experience). Anyways just do whatever she likes. Most people recommend Kyan so do whatever she or you want.
Stock 4.0.4 works near perfect for me. It is under rated. I have disabled bloatware and added some tweaks but honestly, it rocks fine. Ultra reliable. I am a guy who spent over 1.5years tweaking with my legendary HD2...using custom kernels and cm roms, and never 100% happy...yet the S3 out of the box...kicks butt.
BlackJelly if you want JB. kyanRom if you want ICS.
To the guy who said BlackJelly was poor for battery life: I just went over 5 hrs of screen time with it. It's amazing.

Now what?

Alright so we got our jelly bean update and so far all the stock based custom ROMs are stable from the most part, mod have been added for speed tweaks and battery life. So far so good. Now what? Lol what do we do in the meantime? Just find mods and see what people would like and see if they can be implemented in ROMs? I've flashed almost everything and TW on every ROM is stable if the source was official JB for t999. The AOSP ROMs are stable for the most part with very minor things not working. Kernels have squeezed as much performance from the board of this phone as much as possible (don't expect any kernel to bring you 7000+ on quadrant). So what now? The o my progress that's happening mostly is getting aosp 4.2 on this by tw is descent in my opinion. What will you guys be doing in the meantime? Look at other threads and find mods?

It's refreshing not having to keep up with the grind every now and then. Especially with the holidays upon us, time is scarce and free time is better spent doing other things than dealing with crackflashing habits.
Exactly. What now is what annoys me about xda. It makes it seem like people don't actually enjoy their phone. I actually found xda by mistake back she. I had a vibrant. I actually left for a while because I was pretty much the same way. Flashing and reseting y phone pretty much daily trying out new ROMs. When things got stable I asked the same question as op. Realized I never actually used my phone. I don't root very much but come here for advice and for new news. I've tried flashing roms but I actually use my phone and have a life to live. Be happy things are stable. That's my advice. Its an addiction.

Lol actually, i do use my phone. Back when we had ICS, there was jelly bean but i kept going back and fourth between jelly bean AOSP and stock TW ics. found that TW was solid but had a few issues with Bluetooth which i used with my Bluetooth headsets. So I was on AOSP and back and fourth. I have been on JB TW since it dropped and haven't flashed since. lol so i guess im just adjusting to not flashing weekly. But even when flashing, i would use my phone pretty often. for now, im going to just stay here, add the mods that i want, and look for the ones i need (skip track with volume rocker w/ screen off) and then i will delete the app from my phone and come here every 2 weeks.
Now we wait for 4.1.2 so we can get multi view like the note 2.
Other than that, most of us will have moved on to SGS4 by the time the S3 gets 4.2.

I thankfully got this out of my system back with my Vibrant. At some point I just realized that I was doing... Nothing with my phone. I'd switch out ROMs and the like, but ultimately.. I just went back to stock with a custom kernel and a few tweaks for speed and performance. But mostly had it set to spiffy fast and ultra usable.
I've done the same with my GS3. I didn't care much for the ROMs I have seen out there, so went back to stock. Now I have Jelly Bean on here, with a custom kernel and rooted. Got it running outrageously smooth and fast. What more do I need? My phone is as good as it is going to get until 4.2 and hopefully whatever comes after that.
So I use it. I show it off to people. I achieve great computing and processing needs when out and about. I like my phone. I don't need anything more out of it than what I got.
I just hang out at XDA for if anything new ( feature, app, etc. ) comes out that seems neat, if an error crops up, or quick fixes.

Im so glad you posted this.. i was about to post a question on a really good stock based rom. I'm currently using the cm10 one and it works awesome so far no issues but i would like to go back to touchwiz.

no bugs or glitches, runs perfectly, and its stock based so you get the same look as before. It's also extremely debloated. Just remember to flash Ktoonsez kernel after flashing the rom.
It may not be stock based but I have always loved CyanogenMod and I'm currently using the Unofficial CM10.1 and the only problem is that the camera doesn't work.

I've tried a bunch. My favorite so far for both performance and battery life is AOCP.
I am not a fan of TouchWiz, but on a lark I flashed the Jelly Bean TW-based Loser ROM yesterday, and I have to say I"m impressed. I might stick with this for a while.
I really like cm10 but the wifi issues and screen wake up made me flash back to stock. Still trying to find a good stable rom with decent battery life. I would rather it have fewer features with no issues than tons of features with tons of bugs.
I'm really liking LoserRom everything works out of the box, it is fast, and the battery life is looking pretty good with KT kernel. But that's all I'm looking for right now. Stock based with killer battery. Check it out.

I have used many. I have used AOKP, LiquidSmooth, CyanogenMod, ParanoidAndroid, and ParanoidKANGDroid. I'd say out of all of them, AOKP was the smoothest, I just don't like it. On CyanogenMod, it would hang and reboot and sometimes WiFi was extremely weak, and it doesn't help that most AOSP ROMs are based off of CyanogenMod. I am waiting for CM10.1 to see what happens.

Is it possible to use a different version of the camera? OR do you have to use the version you are on? For instance I'm on 4.1.2 and like the camera with stock 4.1.1.
I'm using Slim 3.1 and I love it, I'm getting over 1 and a half day's worth of battery with normal use, texting, emails, surfing, youtube etc.
Using task650 aokp 4.1.2 with his underwear kernel is rock solid, so much customising and been getting retarded battery life usually 1.5 days with about 6 hrs on screen time. Plus able to use it for everything lots of calls, texts, navigation, wifi, youtube, gmail. Its awesome

I am running the stock JB ROM, installed by Kies.
When I had my SGS, I tried flashing many different ROMs but always went back to stock because I found every ROM was buggy in one way or another.
I also bricked my phone on a couple of occasions (was able to fix it) and decided that stock did everything I wanted, so I am sticking with stock (rooted) on the S3.

I really liked tasks aokp rom. But in my case wifi kept on saying not in range after a reboot and also had screen wake issues. Did you experience any of those issues?

I am running the stock JB ROM, installed by Kies.
When I had my SGS, I tried flashing many different ROMs but always went back to stock because I found every ROM was buggy in one way or another.
I also bricked my phone on a couple of occasions (was able to fix it) and decided that stock did everything I wanted, so I am sticking with stock (rooted) on the S3.

+1
But this time I'm not even thinking to root my phone, everything is good.

Its awesome

I SECOND THIS DUDE. This ROM is amazing. It's compatible with JusTUNbean inverse gapps and Task does one hell of a job with updates.

Is it possible to use a different version of the camera? OR do you have to use the version you are on? For instance I'm on 4.1.2 and like the camera with stock 4.1.1.

The unofficial CM10.1 JB 4.2 for d2att (ATT version of S3) has camera working as of this morning. Apparently photosphere isn't working, but that's a pretty unnecessary feature IMHO. So far it's my favorite ROM, and aside from having to tinker with the data settings, I haven't run into any bugs.
I'm running CM10.1 (4.2.1) with KT747 and I'm getting the best battery life and performance I've ever gotten with my phone to date. This also doesn't have any of the black screen issues or anything which kept me away from vanilla android roms for awhile. All the 4.1.2 ROMs I've tried sofar speak a lot to the future of android - INCREDIBLY smooth and fluid, great battery life and awesomely stable. Especially considering they're all still in beta, it's very impressive.
Only issues are that the camera doesn't work and data can be temperamental every so often. I'm currently at 1day 5 hours, 2 hours screen on time with 46% remaining. 192mhz-1728mhz with ktoonservative.
I'm actually gunna give Task's AOKP preview a try right now. I was running it before but left because of the black screen wake issues. I was hesitant about using the preview because of the call echo issue, but it's also present in CM10.1 apparently..
Guys, the OP states he would like to stay Samsung based.

If that's the case, serenity is my favorite. The one-handed operation features are fantastic.

Best rom for epic

Hello
I am new to the root world and would like to get some advice on what I should run on my phone. I am currently running cm9 stable but am having some issues. So I don't know where to go from here.

The Peoples Rom is a solid Rom with great battery life. All the CM roms have been great for me and CM10.1 is no exception, but I'd try a few to see what you like best.
Now should I just run the custom kernel and modem that comes with the cm rom? I'm having issues with mms and Wi-Fi tether

NEVER ask what's the best ROM!
They ALL are for the users that use them. No one can tell you what is the best for YOU. You need to read and decide for yourself if a ROM suits you.

Your modem does not change but the kernel will. The one that comes with CM10.1 is a 3.xxx based kernel and is smooth. I'd recommend running the rom as is for a few days and see how you like it.
I agree with you Kenny, but what an amazing work! everything is fast & fluid, colors are vibrant and beautiful.. I have been hanging around Epic forums for more than a year and this is the first time I saw something like this! you really had put a lot of work behind this, well done :good:
Been lurking and playing for a while now...
First off, I'm really impressed with the work the developers do here! OMG, it's giving my Epic new life and more. My wife like my phone so much, she asked me to root hers and put JB on it!
That being said, there's really a lot of choices, and almost every ROM makes a good daily driver. The question is what your threshold is for having things you're willing to put up with to get the cool new features these ROMs provide.
Here's my experience in the last 4 months - I started with CM9, and while I really liked it, I had some issues where it seemed to run hot at times. I added all the build.prop tweaks for increasing battery life, and once the stable version came out, I was pretty stoked. After a couple of weeks, I tried CM10 nightlies (my current ROM, 2013-01-20. I LOVE it! I added the 4.2 gapps camera and Gallery to enhance it a bit).
I expected the worst, because I work with developers and the term "nightlies" is never something we show to the public. In reality, aside from some initial issues with rebooting on earlier builds, it's been awesome.
This past couple of weeks, I decided to check out the waters and tried CM 10.1, and ran it for over two weeks - even put it on my wife's phone. It was like buttah until it randomly rebooted in the middle of a business call. I figure, once it goes to nightlies, I'll try it out again. Still itching, I tried ParanoidAndroid 4.1.2, and also AOKP Alpha 4.2.1 build. Both builds were stable and pretty polished, but battery life was better with CM10 - at least for the time-being. If you like to have lots of control over how your phone looks and acts, you can't go wrong with either ROM. I went back to CM10 mostly because it runs everything, especially Dead Space, which I couldn't get to work on any other ROM.
So, there's not really a "best" - it depends on what you want, and can put up with if there are issues.
