(Q) How do I use twrp to get new ota - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I download the new OTA on my rooted Note 2 but now I'm like what should I do.. 1. Should I unzip the file first with androzip than move it over to my SD card or just go Str8 through Twrp? Please help out if you can.. Thanks

Unless they've figured out a way recently, you can't install the actual OTA with a custom recovery, only stock recovery. You just need to find a copy of the stock ROM in one of the forums on here and download / install through TWRP if you want to stay stock, but rooted.

The stock OTA SHOULD NOT be applied using TWRP. Use the stock recovery only or you will get an error. You need to be on Stock, stock, stock MC2 unrooted in order to apply the update.zip.
It doesn't matter where you put it or what you name it. If you can point to it in Stock recovery, it will install it.

do I need root to slash stock rom?

Do I need to root my phone to flash Stock roms via Odin? I want to flash the Stock rom and I wonder if it gonna lose the IMEI? thanks guys
Nope. But you do need root to install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM. There may be another method but im not familiar with it at the moment.
Anyway you can easily dl one of the stock firmwares from samfirmware.com and install using odin. Provided you just want pure stock.
And you shouldn't have to worry about losing your imei flashing stock with odin. I dont recall that ever hapoening. Besides, imei issues have been solved. Just check the dev section for info.

thanks for your reply
btw, I'm on stock with latest Tmo update now. Let say I want to flash stock without that update (stock before the update). how does it change my stock recovery? is the recovery still the stock with latest Tmo update?
I dont really understand how the stock recovery works. after I apply the update, is the update applied to the stock recovery too?
As far as I am aware it will rewrite your stock recovery back to whatever version you are installing as well. So long as you use odin and a full firmware file from Samsung.

So I can flash one of those 4.1.1 stock roms on stock recovery? If so could you let me know how
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
You can flash the otas in stock recovery if thats what you mean. But you have to be full stock UVALH2 first.
If you mean one of the roms based on those leaked otas then you have to flash with cwm or twrp.

Well I went to that website that was posted above and it showed 4.1.1. I am on complete stock uvlh2 right now. Just was wondering if and how you flash that or if I need to root and do it through CWM

Ok, first and just fyi, all of the files listed under OTA on that site are leaked, unofficial updates. Each has its own.....quirks. the only officially released ones are above the otas listed under firmware i believe. Only ics 4.0.4 are official builds.
The otas are basically patches, not full firmware. They patch existing files to update them to a newer release.
If you still want to go with the otas there are a few ways to do this.
The official way:
From full stock UVALH2 (no mods, debloating, modem must match, stock recovery, root is ok) boot into recovery and flash.
If previously rooted you can attempt to preserve root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.
Mobile Odin method (root required):
Get free Mobile Odin from xda, get full version on play store. (Full version will inject root during flash. I highly recommend this method)
Open Mobile Odin and choose OTA/Update.zip. Select the OTA you wish to flash. If pro version make sure EverRoot options are selected. Do not check wipe data, cache or dalvik. Press Flash Firmware and confirm to start the process.
CWM method (root required):
I have not fone this myself so try to confirm elsewhere the exact steps. Using latest cwm recovery, flash ota file and when asked do not flash recovery. When flashing is complete then flash a cwm flashable version of SuperSu/Superuser. Reboot.
After flashing any ota check for these files and if present delete or rename them. They rewrite stock recovery every boot.
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Thats it! If i missed anything please let me know, particularly with cwm method. Thx
Alternatively you can just flash a rom in dev section based on these otas.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

Question: Can I get back to STOCK recovery?

I'm currently running on a STOCK rooted ROM with CWM recovery. Is there a way to get to stock recovery so I can accept OTA updates?
Thanks!

Yes. I did so and I used option 7 in the toolkit. But you can just download the stock recovery file from the dev section and flash it through the PDA slot of Odin.

Thanks, BTW would you have the link to the one to use in ODIN, Just not sure what search to do. THANKS!
I would recommend using the toolkit. I don't know where the file is for the stock recovery. The toolkit downloads all the files you need and simply walks you through the steps of using Odin to flash it. It even puts the device into download mode for you and opens odin for you. The only way it would be easier is if you didn't have to even navigate through Odin.
Or you could always go to the QBKing77 video that was linked earlier. He always has links in the description of his videos, and he's one of the best instructors out there at rooting, unrooting, and everything in between.

[Q] Problems updating to JB for S3 on stock ROM

Ok, so i got my stock ROM with rooted, and CWM recovery on my phone. When I started the update process, CWM asks me to install untrust zip file; then an error comes up:
E: Error in cache/fota/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted
I have done this twice and the same error comes up. Can somebody let me know what is wrong? Do i have to unrooted and install original recovery? Please let me know.
Thank you
You have to have stock recovery to update

Hello,
As an update to my situation, I switch back to stock recovery. However, I still have the same problem. Then, I decide to boot into recovery and apply the update from recovery. I use the OTA update.zip file and and the update.zip file from here.
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426433
I notice that the two update.zip file is different by size a little bit. I have no clue why it is not working or what I have done wrong. The ROM I am using is the original stock ROM with rooted. I want to know what I should do to update without wiping everything and flashing a new stock Jelly Bean ROM.
Thank you.
Just use Odin. Takes 10 min tops. Fool proof.

I suggesy using root66 via odin.
That ota is the exact one I used originally, was there a problem with it or did the file sizes just not match?
Did you check the md5?

Can you elaborate more on using Odin and which ROM to use? My OTA update.zip has a size of 335.65 MB, while the update.zip I downloaded from the thread below has a size of 334.2 MB. They have different size so I assume there is a slight different in the ROM and, thus the size.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
Also, for using Odin, which ROM should I use? Is this the one?

Do I just flash it on top of my original stock ROM using Odin?, or do I have to wipe cache & dalvik cache? I just want a quick way to flash without having to lose all my settings and stuff. Thank you for all the noobs question. I am not used to Odin. I only know how to flash using CWM recovery.

The 334.2 one should work.
But for odin, yes thats the official unrooted stock firmware youd use.
But if you want root, I suggest you use the root66 version.

Update

Hi all I'm trying to find out how to update my note 2 to 4.3 I am 4.12 stock rooted, I didn't want to uproot should I wait for a device to make a rooted update zip or do I definitely have to uproot them update and root agian. Sorry but I'm a little confused about the process. Thx in advance

As long as you have stock recovery and you didn't flash any custom ROMs you could just update from the zip provided in the forum. You have to be bone stock . put zip on external SD card and flash it you will lose root but there's a way to get it back if you read the threads. Good luck i already updated and have no plans on going back.
