do I need root to slash stock rom? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Do I need to root my phone to flash Stock roms via Odin? I want to flash the Stock rom and I wonder if it gonna lose the IMEI? thanks guys

Nope. But you do need root to install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM. There may be another method but im not familiar with it at the moment.
Anyway you can easily dl one of the stock firmwares from samfirmware.com and install using odin. Provided you just want pure stock.
And you shouldn't have to worry about losing your imei flashing stock with odin. I dont recall that ever hapoening. Besides, imei issues have been solved. Just check the dev section for info.

thanks for your reply
btw, I'm on stock with latest Tmo update now. Let say I want to flash stock without that update (stock before the update). how does it change my stock recovery? is the recovery still the stock with latest Tmo update?
I dont really understand how the stock recovery works. after I apply the update, is the update applied to the stock recovery too?

As far as I am aware it will rewrite your stock recovery back to whatever version you are installing as well. So long as you use odin and a full firmware file from Samsung.

Question about OTA ICS Update

I've searched the forums and haven't found a real clear answer to the questions I have.
First of all, I have the OTA ICS update waiting for me. Right now, I'm rooted running Gingerbread with the stock ROM. I'd really like to install the update, but I've got concerns.
Do I need to unroot my phone first before the update? If so, how? I've read several different articles, but they're all different, and people always have some issue or another with the methods. Is there a surefire way?
I know I should back up my phone, but to be honest, I'm not quite sure how! What's the best/easiest way?
I just simply can't afford to brick my phone! Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
Keri
Heres the deal.. If you update you will be fine it will break root youll be on stock ics .
Then reroot and install agat cwm recovery all this can be done by downloading the root and recovery script on your pc.
You can also use odin and download the pre rooted stock ics rom and odin flash it
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Back up your apps with a appbackup in market or use titanium backup
To be honest id just download odin
And the prerooted stock ics and flash it
It should have cwm installed after u flash also
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
So I shouldn't use the OTA update? Isn't that the easier way?
Use this link to odin flash the same ota ics update as a rom Via odin
Its rooted and just what u want

So I can flash one of those 4.1.1 stock roms on stock recovery? If so could you let me know how
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
You can flash the otas in stock recovery if thats what you mean. But you have to be full stock UVALH2 first.
If you mean one of the roms based on those leaked otas then you have to flash with cwm or twrp.

Well I went to that website that was posted above and it showed 4.1.1. I am on complete stock uvlh2 right now. Just was wondering if and how you flash that or if I need to root and do it through CWM

Ok, first and just fyi, all of the files listed under OTA on that site are leaked, unofficial updates. Each has its own.....quirks. the only officially released ones are above the otas listed under firmware i believe. Only ics 4.0.4 are official builds.
The otas are basically patches, not full firmware. They patch existing files to update them to a newer release.
If you still want to go with the otas there are a few ways to do this.
The official way:
From full stock UVALH2 (no mods, debloating, modem must match, stock recovery, root is ok) boot into recovery and flash.
If previously rooted you can attempt to preserve root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.
Mobile Odin method (root required):
Get free Mobile Odin from xda, get full version on play store. (Full version will inject root during flash. I highly recommend this method)
Open Mobile Odin and choose OTA/Update.zip. Select the OTA you wish to flash. If pro version make sure EverRoot options are selected. Do not check wipe data, cache or dalvik. Press Flash Firmware and confirm to start the process.
CWM method (root required):
I have not fone this myself so try to confirm elsewhere the exact steps. Using latest cwm recovery, flash ota file and when asked do not flash recovery. When flashing is complete then flash a cwm flashable version of SuperSu/Superuser. Reboot.
After flashing any ota check for these files and if present delete or rename them. They rewrite stock recovery every boot.
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Thats it! If i missed anything please let me know, particularly with cwm method. Thx
Alternatively you can just flash a rom in dev section based on these otas.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

How to revert to Stock Recovery from TWRP?

I am trying to unroot my phone before I send it out for repair. I am running CM10.1 with TWRP recovery. I reset the binary counter with triangle away but I can't find a link for a flashable stock recovery? If I flash the stock rom, will it replace the recovery as well or do they have to be flashed seperately. I've heard that going into a custom recovery will trigger the binary counter so there's no point of me flashing a stock rom only to trigger the binary counter again...
I have the GS3 T999v with Wind Mobile
Thanks in advance!
I'm pretty sure flashing any stock rom will not affect the recovery. You could try flashing stock firmware or the unrooted stock rom.

@dannytron
I meant to say that I have the unrooted stock rom ready to roll. The issue is that I'm not sure if it will replace my recovery to stock as well, or would I have to flash the stock recovery before I flash the unrooted stock rom.
@DocHoliday77
The recovery in your sig says it's for t-mobile gs3 or does it not matter?
Thank you for the fast reply guys!
Go to the firmware thread linked in my sig. Download the correct firmware for your model/carrier.
Follow the instructions for flashing that in Odin. It will take care of everything.

Ok so I'm assuming you mean just download the official non-rooted stock rom and flash it via odin? Ok doing it now!
I'm with Wind Mobile!
Thanks
EDIT: Ok I am following this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2323847 and it says 1) Reset binary counter 2) flash stock recovery 3) go into stock recovery and perform a data wipe....I cannot data wipe from custom recovery since it will reset the binary counter! This is why I need the stock recovery, do I not? Won't flashing the Offical Non-root Stock ROM on top of CM10.1 without data wiping give me problems??
Sorry, I must've misread, thought you already reset the flash counter. In that case flash the root66 firmware instead of the official stock. Once done, you csn now use triangle away to reset thr counter.
Next choose full unroot from the supersu app. Then factory reset.
Done!

Do this ^
You're supposed to flash the stock firmware (not rom) in Odin and it'll return everything back to factory. But in your case you should do what doc says and flash root66 for your device so you can then use triangle away and unroot the phone.

Thanks Doc. Well, it kinda worked.
The odd thing is that I flashed the root66 (which also restored recovery from TWRP to stock) and i wiped the data from stock. Now the device status is listed as "Normal" (So I guess my device isn't rooted) so I guess i don't need to do anything else. I'm even downloading an OTA update right, I'll let ya know if I run into any problems.
Thank you very much for your help
Actually you are probably still rooted.

Failed at Odin

Hey gang, I'm stuck. I wanted to start my phone up back from stock to sell it to my friend and he wanted it not rooted. So I went to Odin and did all the steps correctly but it keeps failing. Ok last night I was able to use it and I did all the set up and even installed the update on my phone and now its on 4.3 over the air.
I wanted to put the S3Rx rom to show my friend what you can do with the phone but I can't install it because Odin keeps failing. The only thing I've noticed different was that the phone has now this "knox" app. I don't know if samsung made it harder to root your phone or what with this 4.3 upgrade.
Can someone help me solve this? what I want to do is just root my phone again. Any clues?
What are you trying to do in Odin?

I don't know what you mean about cf-auto root. I even tried the other method up the installing the twrp.tar file and using Odin trying to flash the Knox removal zip, and nothing seems to work.
I don't understand I used to do this all the time and it never gave me problems. I used to do this to clean out my phone with so much junk that it was chewing up my storage space.
If all you want to do is remove Knox then flash a recovery with Odin, and flash a stock ROM like stockmod 4.3, its also pre-roooted.. You cannot do that with Odin
Edit: also if you ever want to restore to stock or use root66 you need to flash the 4.3 tar versions, nothing below or it will fail everytime.. Things changed with the 4.3 official update

The firmware is already installed on your phone, you don't need to flash it again.. now just flash a recovery with Odin and then flash your rom

I'm using rom manager and I keep getting "an error occurred while flashing your recovery" but then I was looking into TWRP and it says that I must root my phone. I thought I was rooted after using a recovery in Odin
If you already flashed a recovery in Odin then just flash your ROM in recovery.. If you haven't flashed a custom recovery, flash it in Odin, then reboot to recovery and flash your rom

Ok, I am trying hard to get this and all I'm getting is frustrated with x amount of attempts. This is where I am: I'm on 4.3 Device status: Custom
Build: JSS15J.T999UVUEMJC
with this I can't get to flash a rom. I was trying to flash the S3Rx 3.0 aroma but whenever but it just won't and whenever I try to go to recovery through Rom Manager theres an era.
I guess I'm stuck with this so called stock 4.3 without any special features. I'm going to give it another try with another rom and see.

I've never used TWRP. I don't even know how to get it. If I do go to Rom Manager it says "you must root your phone for Rom Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su".
thats what I get when I go into Rom Manager.
when I pick ClockworkMod Recovery it asks for either 2.x or 3.x+ I pick either one and it says that it has been set up to use your existing recovery installation. then I tap OK and when I get out of app and go back into it, it says there is an update available for CWM I click at it and then it does the installation at 100% then I get "an error occurred while trying to flash your recovery"
So basically I have no recovery that can flash any roms. I really appreciate your help and patience. I'm just going insane here I honestly believe its that upgrade I got OTA to 4.3 because all along before I had 4.1.2 and gave me no problems. I think what it was is that when I used Odin to unroot my phone I did all the installation to get back to stock, then I was wondering about updates so I went to the menu and tapped on the Software upgrade and then it was upgrading (500 and something megabytes) then it reboot and it was 4.3
You need to download the recovery from http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/d2tmo and flash it with Odin.. Keep in mind that this will trip the warranty counter just to let you know, and you cannot reset it.. After that you can flash the ROM

How to go back to 4.3 from 4.4.2

How do you go back to 4.3 after taking the OTA and then rooting it? I dont want to brick my phone. I have the 4.3 stock rom from sammobile that i could flash using Odin but not sure if that will work?

Best practice is to flash custom recovery then a custom rom. If you try using odin or other methods then an issue may/can arise. If you only flash custom roms you will have no issues with bricking hard or soft.

I used Odin to do a complete restore back to 4.3. I like a fresh start, seems I have less issues that way. Worked great then I rooted with cf auto root, then back to smoothest rom 2/3 imo.
