[Q] Problems updating to JB for S3 on stock ROM - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Ok, so i got my stock ROM with rooted, and CWM recovery on my phone. When I started the update process, CWM asks me to install untrust zip file; then an error comes up:
E: Error in cache/fota/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted
I have done this twice and the same error comes up. Can somebody let me know what is wrong? Do i have to unrooted and install original recovery? Please let me know.
Thank you

You have to have stock recovery to update

You could also just flash the rooted version

Hello,
As an update to my situation, I switch back to stock recovery. However, I still have the same problem. Then, I decide to boot into recovery and apply the update from recovery. I use the OTA update.zip file and and the update.zip file from here.
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426433
I notice that the two update.zip file is different by size a little bit. I have no clue why it is not working or what I have done wrong. The ROM I am using is the original stock ROM with rooted. I want to know what I should do to update without wiping everything and flashing a new stock Jelly Bean ROM.
Thank you.

Just use Odin. Takes 10 min tops. Fool proof.

I suggesy using root66 via odin.
That ota is the exact one I used originally, was there a problem with it or did the file sizes just not match?
Did you check the md5?

Can you elaborate more on using Odin and which ROM to use? My OTA update.zip has a size of 335.65 MB, while the update.zip I downloaded from the thread below has a size of 334.2 MB. They have different size so I assume there is a slight different in the ROM and, thus the size.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
Also, for using Odin, which ROM should I use? Is this the one?
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426424
Do I just flash it on top of my original stock ROM using Odin?, or do I have to wipe cache & dalvik cache? I just want a quick way to flash without having to lose all my settings and stuff. Thank you for all the noobs question. I am not used to Odin. I only know how to flash using CWM recovery.

The 334.2 one should work.
But for odin, yes thats the official unrooted stock firmware youd use.
But if you want root, I suggest you use the root66 version.

[Q] restoring stock rom?

Short and sweet, I'm having trouble restoring the Stock ROM on my phone? I have installed the Ultimatum ROM but following multiple guides (even the one here on XDA that includes a full wipe) doesn't seem to remove it. Am I doing something wrong here?

You need to flash through ODIN while phone is in download mode. You can get the stock .pit and .tar files from the development forums if you look. Then you can restore the stock software and start fresh.

To vanilla stock no root flash stock w/root via Odin, use triangle away to reset binary counter(if tripped) then flash the official UCALG1 ROM via Odin and you should be good to go.

[Q] How to install T-mobile OTA update?

How Do I do it, whenever I click install the phone reboots into Recovery and says Error Signature verification failed on the bottom and menu on top.
It may help to know what ora and model phone you have in case specifics are needed.
But you must be 100% stock. No mods, matching modem, stock recovery. Then put the ota on external and flash in recovery.
Or use mobile odin. If still fails may be a bad download.

It's T999 duh, Isn't there a zip for this update? Or other way I could go with Custom ROM, I don't know which one though, probably just one with Debloat, no mods, or themes

Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
You can flash the otas in stock recovery if thats what you mean. But you have to be full stock UVALH2 first.
If you mean one of the roms based on those leaked otas then you have to flash with cwm or twrp.

Ok, first and just fyi, all of the files listed under OTA on that site are leaked, unofficial updates. Each has its own.....quirks. the only officially released ones are above the otas listed under firmware i believe. Only ics 4.0.4 are official builds.
The otas are basically patches, not full firmware. They patch existing files to update them to a newer release.
If you still want to go with the otas there are a few ways to do this.
The official way:
From full stock UVALH2 (no mods, debloating, modem must match, stock recovery, root is ok) boot into recovery and flash.
If previously rooted you can attempt to preserve root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.
Mobile Odin method (root required):
Get free Mobile Odin from xda, get full version on play store. (Full version will inject root during flash. I highly recommend this method)
Open Mobile Odin and choose OTA/Update.zip. Select the OTA you wish to flash. If pro version make sure EverRoot options are selected. Do not check wipe data, cache or dalvik. Press Flash Firmware and confirm to start the process.
CWM method (root required):
I have not fone this myself so try to confirm elsewhere the exact steps. Using latest cwm recovery, flash ota file and when asked do not flash recovery. When flashing is complete then flash a cwm flashable version of SuperSu/Superuser. Reboot.
After flashing any ota check for these files and if present delete or rename them. They rewrite stock recovery every boot.
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Thats it! If i missed anything please let me know, particularly with cwm method. Thx
Alternatively you can just flash a rom in dev section based on these otas.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

Jelly Bean HELP! Please Help! :)

Hi everyone. I am on the stock rom UVALH2, rooted, with a custom kernel. Can someone please help me flash back the proper kernel so I can update to JB?!
I will be in debt to you forever..
I just tried the OTA update to the newest kernel which failed and brought me to CWM. What do I need to do here?
You must be UVALJ4 to use the ota.
I suggest using odin w/ the fw I have in my fw/ota thread.

I'll have to try that. I flashed my old UVALH2 kernel back and then went to update. Downloaded the 335mb file but the signature verification failed and it booted to CWM. Is it because I am rooted or not on the latest UVAXXX?

Okay doing that now. Now it seems when my phone is in CWM odin doesn't pickup/recognize the phone. However when the phone is on normally odin detects it.
-----Look Below-----
Going to do a full rundown so anyone can help me here. When I originally rooted the phone I used some type of tooklit (Looked like a green version of MS-DOS). I've always had the stock rom. I've always used CWM to flash different kernels. Right now in About Phone I'm on baseband T999UVLH2 with kernel version [email protected] #1
I'm trying to get Jelly Bean 4.1 as a clean install. Not worried about keeping root at the moment either. I have root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA.tar.md5 downloaded which I am trying to push through Odin. However when I reboot my phone into CWM and connect the USB cable Odin doesn't recognize my phone. I'm willing to try anything at this point as this is frustrating me beyond belief.
You need download mode not recovery.
Same procedure but vol down instead.
Hold volume down, home and power to boot into download mode. Press vol up when prompted. Then odin will work.

I feel so stupid.. Thank you for that as well! (Can I buy you a beer?) Okay I did that Odin is now pushing root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA.tar.md5. After this is done will Jelly Bean be on the phone? Should I wipe anything to get rid of the old firmware/files?
Success! Android 4.1.1 is now running with what appears to be the most updated kernel/baseband! Now should I do any type of wipe to get rid of any old files that could slow the phone down? What happens to the old firmware stuff?

Factory wipe under CWM? Will it make me lose my apps/contact info? I suppose I could always do a titanium backup.
Factory reset wiil wipe apps and user data. Not necessary but I do recommend it when updating android. Just makes for reduced potential for problems.
Reset in cwm or twrp does not wipe internal sd. Stock recovery will though.

If you downloaded the root66 zip file you just use winrar and choose extract. It will or at least should unzip to its own folder. After that just follow the directions to use Odin.

[Q] flashing a rom without bricking?

I cant flash a rom and have it work. I have tried several ROMS like aokp, jedi, smooth, jellybeans, etc and they almost always brick. Jedi worked but google services crashed back to back to back to the point where i couldnt even use the phone. does anyone know of a 4.3 rom that works on att sgh-i317?? i basically went down the list on galaxynote2root.com and tried them all but no success.

any ideas?

Then fully wipe the device again from within the latest version of TWRP recovery and flash the new downloads ...
You may have a bad flash ...and you are not bricked...g

I did those exact steps and it did not work. i tried flashing pac man rom the last time and it got stuck in a boot loop too. I think there are some files that are corrupt or some temp files somewhere that are preventing a successful flash. my binary flash count was 9. and that was just on this run, ive tried flashing several times before. each time the only way to recover it is hooking the phone up to a pc and using kies to flash back to stock firmware. this sucks.

9 counts ??
Uh....yeh...not right ...
Have you messed with device partitions in ODIN ??
If so...something is definitely wrong ...
At this point ...you may want to consider a full return to stock and allow the PIT to properly restore your partitions..
Just follow the return to stock guide (sticky )...in the general section ..
Once restored to stock with a corrected flash counter you can begin again using CF auto root as your root method..
It sounds as if you have root issues and possible partition damage...
One other step you can try first is to boot into download mode and re-root using CF...
That may help....but certainly won't hurt anything...then attempt a clean flash again..
If it fails ...then the return to stock and rooting again seems prudent ...g

Go to wipe menu and then advanced wipe and select dalvik, cache, data, system and internal(optional). I do it three times to make sure. then flash your rom with gapps (if aosp)
