Alright so this is my first ever post on xda. I recently upgraded from a HTC Eris to the Dinc. When I had my Eris, I rooted it and had a general understanding of what roms were and how they worked. I also was able to understand overclocking and flashing different "packages" if you will to allow my phone to do different things. For example I used to use xtrsense Rom on my Eris which required running gscripts to change overclock amounts instead of using setcpu. So I have a very basic understanding of how these things work. when I upgraded to my Dinc, the first thing I looked into was rooting. I have been doing some research and have come to the conclusion that a Dinc root is a lot more detailed than an Eris root. I've been getting confused because it appears that there are a lot more features that can change. What I mean by this is there are roms, radio roms, and kernels. Now, while I may know the names for different aspects of the OS, I do not fully understand what all of the different parts of a root include. Basically, what I'm getting at here is I would really appreciate if someone could give me a general overview of the different aspects of Dinc post root goodies such as roms etc....I know how to root and I've already done enough research on unrevoked to use it, I just need someone to clear up what I'm going to be looking forward to after I root, and more importantly, what it all means and how I would use it. I appreciate any answers in advance and thank you guys for your patience.

First off, welcome to xda.Basically you open almost endless combinations. I've not changed my radio so I can't really comment on that. Kernels vary by device. Some phones handle OC kernels very well but you sacrifice some battery life. I personally use heyitslou #8. Works great on my phone. As far as roms are concerned, they can get overwhelming. There are evo roms, evo hybrid roms, stock highly moddable inc roms and built from source roms. Within those you have straight sense, gingerbread with sense, AOSP gingerbread, etc. You see where I'm going? And that's all before you get to themes. And if you don't like any of the dozens of options that you can find in five minutes or less, with pretty basic understanding of adb, 7zip, and photoshop or gimp, you can manipulate and combine multiple looks into something truly unique. And with evo hybrid type roms a lot of the themes and theme elements for the evo will work on the incredible also. Actually a lot of the really good mods are from the evo that our wonderful devs have incorporated into the inc roms. Hope this helps a little.

That was very helpful however I'm looking more for someone to try and give me a brief description of what all different aspects and features I'm going to have to deal with once I flash....to put this simply, am I able to root and flash a new rooted Rom and be done with modding and have all root capabilities? And a further question, where does my UI come from once I root. Will flashing a new Rom change my UI it does that have something to do with kernels. I'm sorry guys I'm just still tryin to learn some stuff here. Thanks for your prompt reply and I really hope someone will be able to help me with these answers
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Okay. So once you run unrevoked on your phone you will have root access along with security being turned off. This will give you all of the files needed. Flashing new radios and kernels is not necessary unless called for by whichever rom you choose. Most roms will have what the dev feels is the most stable kernel included. So for example, you decide heyitslou redemption rom looks good. Once downloaded and flashed through recovery, you don't have to do anything. The current radio on the stock inc is fine. The kernel will be replaced with the one from the rom.
The UI will be described in the roms op. Like I said, some are stock sense based, some are source builds like CM7 and evervolv. We're starting to see ports from the desire hd etc. Just make sure to do your homework before flashing anything. And I can't stress enough the importance of making backups. Backups are your best friend.
As a side note. BE CAREFUL WITH RADIOS. It's one of the easiest ways to brick a phone. If everything works, don't mess with the radio until you fully know why.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Alright that was a great answer lol thanks for your patience....on a side note: I noticed you said that once I run unrevoked security will be turned off. I've been reading everywhere about "s-off" and"s-on", but no source provides a good explanation as to what it means. Any input? From my understanding it seems as if its pretty much the "switch" if you will that grants "admin access" to the Droid. Am I correct and what other information can you provide me with? Thanks again
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
In a nutshell, it "fully" unlocks the phone. Read this.

Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Right thanks for the link....one last question here and ill probably be outta your hair what's clockworkmod. Like what is it what does it do and how does it work?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Clockwork is the recovery you will have once rooted. It replaces the stock recovery. This is where all of the flashing and backing up is done. Most importantly is the backup function. Once you see it it's pretty self explanatory. It allows for wiping data and cache partitions, mounting other partitions.
And your not "in my hair". Lol. We are a pretty helpful group here. If you don't ask how will you know? Dont hesitate to ask.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Also, just finished that article you linked me to. So my new understanding is s-off essentially is the root. Essentially s-off means that the part of your phone keeping you out of the system files is disabled?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Sort of. We had root long before we had s off. It allows for more access to the phone from the phone itself without the need to use adb. Also allows for changing things like splash screen images.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
So essentially rooting and s-off on a Dinc would be the same as a plain old Eris root as far as the user end of the software? And any input on clockworkmod and what it does and is

Alright just got done running unrevoked. Haven't bothered with forever yet I haven't figured out if its worth it. Any input on forever? And after my root I'm real happy. I didn't even catch what you said about clockwork earlier on and said oh well and rooted anyway. As soon as I saw it though I realized it was the same thing as nandroid on my Eris. So that's all cleared up. After seeing everything post root I realized it isn't too much different than my Eris at all. All of your guidance was extremely appreciated and you were pretty much the straw that broke the camels back on my root. I really appreciate all of your help and I'm glad that there's friendly people on here willing to help and if there's anything I can do for ya even though as far as dev goes I'm clueless let me know. Thanks again man. Forums need people like you to make this stuff simpler.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
You're most likely S-OFF now anyways if you ran the latest unrevoked. Unless you can turn that off during the installation.

I have been battling back and forth between touchwiz roms and AOSP roms. . So if any developers are looking for a new rom to make, here is my idea (yes, i know it is not a new idea and has been done on many devices). What i would like to have is the stabilty and battery life of a UVDLJA rom including touchwiz launcher, with AOSP lockscreen, inverted AOSP contacts and messenger.I don't know if its possible, but could there be options for this using aroma in the touchwiz roms?
Something I saw while working in the s2 board with my wife's phone was a rom with a touchwhiz base and the aokp rom control features added, I personally would love something like that
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
TL;DR... I agree on the new rom idea lol. And I *****ed and moaned about the roms we have all in relativity are too damn close to each other. But I still respect their hard work, and praise them all as they are doing things I wish I could do.
I wish I had the knowledge and computer strong enough to do this kinda work, I would've had the rom up and running so long ago lol... I used my phone to get most of it working. building sounds and apps into a rom little things here and there just started to break I gave up.
This would be my ultimate DD never have to flash a rom again. I absolutely despise the "nature" that Samsung built in to this phone.
We have about 3 sounds mods everyone focuses on, some cameras and Keyboards people build into the rom, some awesome themes I'm extremely happy with. I would really like a TW rom with all AOSP sounds instead of the water drops and stuff. Camera from TW, LockScreen from AOSP, Notification and Status bar options from AOKP, 4.2 little things here and there as options.
Know I mean no disrespect and I do appreciate what our guys do in the Dev section.
I miss the devs that worked on those kinda things. We have great guys here (I might get [email protected] for this one) but in general they all seem to be adding the same things; Acid, Beats, Walkman music, removing other Samsung Apps while others keep them. They all leave bloat like LTETest, and LTEsettings in the /system/app folder. I could keep going and going. Know I mean no disrespect and I do appreciate them again. But where are the old roms like we used to get (mentioned above) we had some great stuff in the G2X also. We had roms that had custom lockscreens to launchers and all sorts of neat things I would've never expected. Maybe it's time I stop helping the stupids and save up and get a new computer with the power to build roms as well. (I won't release them to people though lol)
i know the exactly what you guys need

I am in the process of developing a ROM. Nothing solid yet. I really do agree with keeping the stability and features of stock with some aosp features. At least for me I'll be a start with dev work. I have a Mac so I've already downloaded xcode and working and following dxsidia as guide. It'll take me a while since I work 10 hour shifts at the hospital and also do some website dev on the side.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I'm glad to see people wanting to work on this. I believe it will make a great DD. It seems I'm one of the few that really like the touchwiz launcher and Widgets, but I ask you to please include that in the rom. People can easily download the other launchers from the market.
I agree, anything that is downloadable from the market should stay there. It's great that you can include something in a rom, but so can simply pressing the install button. Any thing that is already a flashable .zip (like beats) or (acId sounds mod) should stay as a flashable .zip. Just my opinion.
In the ATT galaxy S3 forums, there is a rom called nexusmod reloaded that is close to what I am referring to. Its based on ics and I don't think it has inverted apps that we like.

Damn... I am 41 years old and I love electronic toys. You are making me feel very old. Well young'n, when you get a rom together let me know. dude, you totally can.
easiest way, though, would be to disable your lockscreen and try out widget locker or something like that.
as far as the inverted apps go, i would hit up some of the guys in the themes and apps section. wouldn't take very long to whip something like that up... hell, even the lockscreen wouldn't take very long to modify.
why CM chooses to build from the source of another device is beyond me. it would be much easier to customize the layout/UI, parameters, and make it functional with the firmware meant for this thing, and you would keep all the functionality of TW.
anyways, yeah.
There is this great divide feeling as I've been playing with my new S3, and it really brings homage to the Linux scene (compare: xfce vs kde vs gnome, etc.).
Though I've settled on TouchWiz for now, there are some things I wish were an option and not "just the way it is".
I finally got kitchen working on my Mac. Got a base up and will hopefully be able to post it later. This is my plan since we be seen this throughout. People want stability of stock and those who love tw features will love this. I will be implementing aroma installer later when I get that injected. I've only built a ROM before for myself but never posted it. It'll be theme free and since it'll be stock most stock themes should work. I basically want people to do the work on their own. If they want to add volume mods like beats , they should flash it on their own . This is an experiment to get my foot out there and I'd love the support. Any name suggestions. ??

Idk if this is possible but I always enjoyed the 7 recent apps by drop pulling the notification bar. Just my personal preference, don't really like the hold the home button to see the recent apps.
Quick question guys, how hard would it be to port a sense rom? I know if it were easy we would have a few, but just how hard is it?

I'd like to introduce my first published ROM to the community.
-What is Infinity about?
The purpose of this ROM is for those who don't care much about dealing with bugs and waiting for updates or tweaks to get a daily driver. My project is to keep this as stock as possible because I believe that the touchwiz features are awesome. I'd like to keep the mods to a minimum to maintain functionality and keep the ROM as bug free as possible. Infinity fits perfectly as the name of this ROM as it allows YOU, the user, to make infinite choices to how you want your phone to feel and act like. While I am the chef, I feel its your resposibility to chose the themes and mods ypud like to add as you see fit.
- who this ROM is not for?
This ROM is not for those who are here to flame others or rudely criticize my work. While I accept suggestions and constructive criticism , I will not allow rudeness. Please feel free to post questions or concerns here as I may not ever get to my PMs. Enjoy.
Download instructions:
*download to SD
*backup ROM
*flash in recovery using favorite recovery method
If coming from another ROM I'd recommend wiping data . If coming from stock id still recommend wiping data but your willing to try and dirty flash.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for the sudden death of your phone if you flash this wrong or flash mods not compatible with this.

Will flash tonight! As long as you are working towards including AOSP lockscreen, contacts, and messenger, I will stick with you the whole way. As far as the power mods, can you include screenshot? I know you can hold power and home, its just easier if its in the power menu.
Running very fast and smooth so far. Did you take out the calendar widget? The app for it is there but no widget.
Awesome. Thanks for the feedback so far. Uh. I probably took the calendar widget out on accident. I will work on it tonight. Still at work. For now. You can push the calendar widget apk into system settings. Screenshot in power menu should be next then I assume. hopefully I get some time tonight if the wife does the come a call in'. I'll get some screenies also. I'd also recommend using faux stock kernel in the other thread for a boost. Been reading some good things about his mainline edition.

There's so much to say but trying to be respectful at the same time. Grrrrrrr. Do you really know what you're doing, or do you only understand the basics and know how to make a flashable zip rom? I'm being serious and not trying to be a ****... its just it seems like a.... pointless thread/rom... as of now. Of course when it can be a AOSP/TW ROM that's awesome, but now???!!! You saying "uh. I probably took the calendar widget out on accident" makes me want to not flash the ROM, I understand trial and error but, that should be done before publicizing your work. I'm an A-Hole and this and that so be it, criticism sucks.

No I understand where you're coming from. My haste to get this out there superceeded my common sense. Also my poor word choice also can be a fault in people not wanting to try this. I am not completely new at this. Although I am not alone in creating a ROM using the kitchen. That is the difference between "original" android development in this forum and "android development". A few ROMs I've seen in this section were probably made using the kitchen ad out does the basic for you. The rest is actually knowing Smali and baksmali, compiling and dwcompiling of XML files and such. That isy weakness as I have to search countless forums and guides to find out how to do it in my own. Everyone started somewhere. As much as I want to pull this ROM now I feel I should be more careful in what I say and how I add mods and test them. I know nowadays people seek the ROMs that are "flashy" and have tons of features but it comes at a price. I am not just building for people but foe fun and foe myself. I do run my roms and therefore don't want to brick my own device. I appreciate the criticism as you are probably saying what others don't. Its all part of the learning process. On the other hand, there are plenty of awesome ROMs to choose from.

Thanks man. The journey will be long and difficult. Again I appreciate everyone's patience. I have some time tonight to mess around with some code. I believe I have the power menu figured out. And I wanted to ask. Do you guys prefer lidroid toggles which are customizable or something else. I preferably like the stock ones but something customizable could be added as a zip instead of a default. That is why I'd like to really dig into aroma which would allow maximum user customization but its gonna take more than one night of studying the tutorial and testing. I'll add back the calendar and hopefully have advanced power menu up. No eta yet.

After you put the calendar back in (lol) and add the basic power mods and such, i would be cool with you adding AOSP features one at a time. That would also help with testing.
Hello All,
I just got my 3rd replacement epic 4g touch this evening. Ive been wanting to tinker with custom roms since i first got this thing, but i finally got one without the eMMC brickbug!
i need one that's very stable. I've had good luck with CM on my previous htc devices, but i haven't used it in awhile, and I'm kind of nervous flashing a beta. Whats your opinion on it?
I've been very interested in some of the other ones I've come across.
What's your favorite ROM for this thing?
Edit:
I should add that i prefer roms that have nothing to do with touchwiz our any other carrier mods, wifi hotspot functionality is a nice plus, i miss custom lock screens, and everything else is almost just a luxury.
The answer does not reside in these XDA forums, the answer lies in your heart.

Well it depends, most roms will be fine if they are <= the version of the current Samsung release, but if they are higher, than you can expect things like 4G and some other misc things not working because these things have to be built from source and its harder to get working when there is no foundation to work off of. Just a general tip for any Android phone

ROMs are very personal preference oriented. I could tell you that FreeGS3 is awesome, but you could find things that you don't like about it.
Everyone has their own preference.
The idea is to either find the one that you like JUST ABOUT everything in and everything that YOU do works in it and stick with it or eventually just make your own. I'm going to guess that you're not quite that informed on the topic of cooking ROMs. Don't take that the wrong way, I'm not saying you're incompetent in any way, just drawing the conclusion that if you were attuned to it, you'd probably not be asking here and already be making it the way you like Besides, it's no easy feat, I know.
So, instead of taking someone else's word... I would suggest simply getting a good Titanium Backup of your stuff and start swapping out ROMs here and there and just trying them out for a day or two, see how it works out.
If it's not quite what you want, just try another one.
Now if you care for my opinion, personally, I've found that FreeGS3 works for me because it has a nice mix of the Stock Look and Feel with all the extra added feature sets.
I recommend team shotgun! The best rom it has all the Google apps stocked!
