Don't go with HTC.. you will have to work hard when not s-off with custom roms and so on.. samsung just unlocks everything and you can just download packages from your phone and flash without needing a computer to do "fastboot flash boot boot.img" ..
Plus, you see how quick the development died on the HOX, thats HTC's fault.. Stay with LG, Samsung or something third..
That being said, HTC one is a good looking phone, and Samsung Galaxy S5 should be here in january or february as far as i know, and the G5 should be of a aluminium body aswell as HTC One

all htc phones except of those with tegra got s-off...so because the newer will be with qualcomm it will be easy to s-off...so hm he should choose himself...you see the htc one development? it's maybe after the hd2 one of the best development for an htc device...so he should choose and decide himself...

You may also go with the Nexus 5 if don't mind the inferior battery life.

Yea well , even the HTC One has s-on, and you have to follow this very long guide to get s-off.. s-on and s-off is something that only applies to HTC..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2488772
Can be tiresome having to s-off, i remember having to do a lot of work back in the day with my HTC Magic which was in all seriousness a VERY great device and held 2 years before i sold it.. Even had to magic-SdCard that to get it S-off..
But my recommendation is to go with something else than HTC, but yea, ofcause it's his own choice ..

It's not that extremely long ...have seen some longer xD if you read on pc it's not that much ..... But the best is that he look and decides himself what the best for him could be...because with htc one htc is changing there update policy and so other newer phones will be better updated etc

Wait.....so many great phones coming in 2014......don't consider either of the HTC phones as they don't support customers who are still tied into 2 year contracts !

im not looking for any thing else but HTC. Samsung blah LG not worse it Sony maybe good but like HTC. so as i asked One or One Max, well after watching alot of reviews and articles and comparisons. i found out that One have a better chance than HOX and One Max when it comes to development and support

The HTC one has MUCH better development even now...its soo much better...and that development. Will be there for a long time...for a really long time
Gesendet von meinem HTC One X mit Tapatalk

The development on the One forum will continue for quite a while, it's a good phone and really popular. The M8 should show up on February, so HTC will start concentrating on that, but the One won't end up like the HOX. I still went for a nexus 5 though...

Same here. I was sold on the HTC Sensation but then heard that they locked it down like Fort Knox.
Going to the HTC event in Toronto on May 30th, see what the reps there have to say about this (probably nothing, but worth a try).
Great news indeed. Really hope they listen to their fans. As everyone else has said this will influence what phone I get next.
hope they will make the next nexus android phone ice-cream sandwiches
Sounds like something Motorola would say. Motorola actually said they would unlock the whole range ( carrier dependant) in late 2011 we'll have to see.
Did htc say they'd do anything like that? Hmm big load-a-stalling.
Desire is the source of all suffering.
wow probs to htc they listen to customers
Who would've thought...
Nice to hear these good news, last scepsis is gone looking forward to the Sensation! Great!

It will certainly give me more options if the policy changes.
Being rootable is paramount.
I have to see it first to believe it. In my opinion HTC does not listen to customers. Based on the past when they would release very buggy firmware (eg touch pro 2 and hd2) and did not solve it. Custom roms were the only thing that made the devices great.
So after 4 HTC devices, my next one will be the Galaxy S 2.
Also, we what are their motives for doing it in the first place?
-Operators who don't like tethering, so won't sell their devices when it's possible to root?
-Don't like it when new sense versions are being ported to old devices?
-Thinking that locking everything down will sell them more devices?
I really hope this is not a marketing trick.... I'd really like future HTC phones to have unlock bootloaders we all know (maybe HTC too) that the roms our chefs make are by far better than the stock ones

Nice gesture, this facebook message. Lets hope they mean what the say in it.
The problem is that htc don't sell only hardware..They want sell Htc Sense
They do not want allow to flash an other rom on their devices
Htc Sense is great in my opinion, but I dont understand why they want force to use that..If really they will allow this, will be a great step for htc

Even though HTC's hardware is not always cutting edge, its generally well built and I like this.
I don't use HTC sense, but I would still buy a HTC handset if I could root it, just because I know what I am getting.

[Q] Do you think that Sense 5 can be ported to the One X?

I really like the look of Sense 5 and I would definitely love to try it out, but I don't know if it would be possible to port it over to the international One X since it has entirely different interiors. What do you guys think?

Considering HTC refuses to acknowledge things like the green tint issue that some users are experiencing when they updated to jellybean, ignore GPL by not releasing sources, releasing updates for their phones literally years too late (like the amaze receiving ICS like a year late) I think it's safe to assume that they'll either ignore the One X completely or release it a few years from now.
Either way, I'm pretty sure this is the last HTC phone I ever buy.
reliable only on XDA not on HTC
when we have great team of developers here on xda why we need official one???but in terms of releasing updates we all know HTC.....
Well, my questions wasn't about the official update, I asked if you guys think that the devs will be able to port it fully. Not just skins and tiny segments of Sense 5, I'm talking the full interface.

Since the HTC One has the exact same screen resolution and we have 3.1 kernel, i'm sure we should get full sense 5.
The only limitations are the HTC One's hardware specific features.

The HTC One doesn't have the same screen resolution... It has 1080p and we have 720p. It just has the same screen size (4.7 inch) which is practically irrelevant when porting.

hi folks,
the german tech site techstage.de was able to ask htc directly on the london release party.
they said that there will be definetly an update for the devices one x, one s and one x+.
they also mentioned that this update wont got all the features he htc one got, but i think this will be mainly the new htc-tv feature that allows u to use ur device as a remote (because we dont got an infrared sensor).
we'll see...

buy a new smart phone

Hi friends
now i have htc hd2 and i want to buy a new phone, and now the two handset doubt one x and nexus 4. If you help me?
Compare them on internet, go to a phone store and put them next to eachother. Decide which fits you the most.
This is a personal opinion. Nobody can decide what phone you should buy.
You can add HTC one in that list as well.
If you want fast updates and good custom ROM support, go for the N4.
HTC is not particularly good with those two areas.
This is not a personal opinion, it's a fact.
Sent from my One X using xda premium
I used to use a HTC HD2 from 2009 Nov, still have my hd2 in good working condition. Upgraded to HTC OneX in 2012 April.. no regrets yet.
I'm not sure about N4, pardon my ignorance.. but I do have friends with latest android devices from samsung/ motorola etc. I always do get the most awesome roms/tweaks/themes thanks to the wonderful community at XDA.
I personally love Sense and HTC One X lets you run the latest Sense with its full glory without any lags, if you ask me having an option to run Sense is itself worth selecting HOX over N4, you can always switch back to AOSP if you ever dislike it.
Additionally the image sense chip on HOX is awesome.. I can always vouch that I get the best pic with my slim mobile
Only the single issue with HOX is it doesn't have S-Off yet, that means once you unlock, no way of going back to a state where you can proof that you haven't unlocked your phone. That might be the only reason, why my next device might not be a HTC. But honestly, I'll miss sense.

Samsung/Sony next for me...
Really want one of the new xperia's !! TAKE IT IN THE BATH !!!
Apart from nexus devices, most carrier upgrades leave a lot to be desired timescale-wise. Wouldn't recommend sony for quick upgrades, or customer service(talking from experience...).
It's fairly straightforward though. There are no high-end phones from 2012/13 that will disappoint performance wise so try them out and see which you prefer.
samsung has maybe faster updates, problem is they are so bad that instead of that i wait some weeks more for htc updates and get best out of the phones htc is still the best in all
As a nexus owner I can say that nexus experience is unparalleled. It represents absolute customizability and control over how you want your device to be. Then again HTC and Sammy has better cameras, possibly better displays. You can calibrate nexus 4 display and make it look as good or better than one x or s3.
Ultimately like the previous comments I'd suggest try before you buy.

I have returned my one x twice under warranty with just flashing a nandroid of stock and relocking the bootloader. Device shown the security alert but no questions asked. First for the WiFi squeeze issue for which they fixed and replaced the back case. Looked brand new. Then I just fastbooted the unlock token and rooted again. Second return for signal / no imei number for which I got a new motherboard. Both jobs took 5 days - send and return. Very pleased with customer service of HTC. I'm in UK if that makes any difference.

can be something true?
I'll believe it when I see it. Can't imagine it happening though as I thought I saw the other day that the one x wasn't getting 4.3
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
no one knows but someone from HTC said or better asked "who said we will drop support for hox?" maybe we will get only 4.3 but that would be even enough and if 4.4 htc is best...because the customers service and support etc is getting better and repair service...got nearly new hox without paying anything...only delivering...lol
Read on twitter a post by the liabrjfjjf whatever his nick is (a known source) that htc jewel will get 4.3 android in the future. So it is possible that we might too. I doubt about 4.4 though.
Sent from my HTC One X
I think and i can imagine, that it can be the most probable, that if htc update the hox, they are going to update to 4.4 because 4.3 is a minimalistic update from 4.2.2 so it can be a lost of time, so if we can expect a update it is going to be 4.4, that is what all the phone companies are doing, they are updating their phones to android 4.4 and they jump the minimal update of 4.3, anyways we have to wait!
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
if htc wan to compete with samsung...htc better give hox 4.4 update as galaxy s3 also getting 4.4...
Jeff Gordon from HTC said "Who told you we are dropping support for the One X ?" on twitter. Ok I have 2 possible theories why we *may* get 4.4
1. Because of the whole 4.2.2 and 4.3 mess.
See, unlike us, a majority of newer devices such as the One, One Dev Edition, Butterlfy, Droid DNA and Butterfly S did not receive 4.2.2. During that time, 4.3 was just announced and HTC opted to jump straight to 4.3 for those devices. Now, this was fine since if you look at their changelogs, 90% of the 4.3 update for them was what we got in 4.2.2. Fair enough. They were finally receiving the things we got. Now, the reason why they didn't update our phones to 4.3 was because I believe the amount of improvements were too little. So they just skipped it since 4.4 was on the way. What they may do now is jump 4.3 and go to 4.4 for us since it's pointless to give us 4.3 now. This is all due to the system requirements being halved and probably because of the One X+
2. Now, like I've said before, if they were to drop the One X at this point, it'd be understandable since it's more than 18 months now. However, the One X+ isn't. They have no real reason to drop it. Now, if they were to support the One X+ but not the One X, it would look REALLY bad because both devices are identical, just a minor bump in front camera specs, internal memory and a newer type of T3, all of which do not influence the ability to run 4.4. Plus, the Nexus 7 2012 like I have still has SoC support from nVidia, so they can't pull a fast one by saying they have no SoC support. They do.
Remember, this is my theory. It's based on my own reasoning and what I've managed to make out of the whole situation. Take it with a pinch of salt, knowing that our devices have seen 3 major Android versions and that is on par with or even better than Nexus devices. Don't see what I mean ? The Nexus One started with 2.2, updated to and died at 2.3. The Nexus S started with 2.3, updated to 4.0 and died at 4.1. The Galaxy Nexus started with 4.0, updated to 4.1 and 4.2.2 and finally died at 4.3. See ? Excluding the Gnex, we are on par and have even surpassed the Nexus line. So I am happy. Guess what I'm trying to say is, there may be hope but at the same time don't get over excited. As for the tweet by Football, it may have been just his own speculation, since we all figured this phone died at 4.2.2. At the time, he didn't even see the features for 4.4 and he probably didn't know about the rush HTC was making to get 4.4 out onto the One within 90 days.
@RohinZaraki...agree with your statement...since nvidia still supporting 2012 nexus 7...htc can get the sources too....so hox & hox+ should get android 4.4 update too...one x+ just 1 yr old phone...
If I should have to add a 3rd reason why that news article seems sorta legit to me, I'd say because the list of devices there seem reasonable. Look at the HTC section itself. All high end devices with respectable specs. Same can be said about Samsung and Sony. I'm not too sure about the hierarchy of LG devices but they seem reasonable to me too. I remember the Sense 5 4.2.2 update was a little hard to swallow for us since the One S was also listed, but this seems like a more reasonable list. Hopefully they are right.

If Samsung update the GS3 to 4.4 then HTC are going to put a nail in their coffin if they don't update the HOX.
Pity there is no easy way to get S-Off as that would make updates irrelevant to me then. (unlocked boot loader is lame in comparison)

From the information football (they changed their name? Llabtoofer?) has provided in the past, I think they're a safe bet

HTC One X won’t receive any further updates

So guys finally its official:
HTC OneX and OneX + will not receive any further updates.
Its officially announced by HTC now.
"We can confirm that the HTC One X and One X+ will not receive further Android OS updates beyond Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5. We realize this news will be met with disappointment by some, but our customers should feel confident that we have designed both devices to be optimized with our amazing camera and audio experiences. -HTC"
Update: the only HTC One X variant that will be updated to Android 4.3 is the HTC EVO 4G LTE on Sprint.

Well. Its a quad core it could not handle android 4.4. Wait cm is running great. Well they would need a big team to update to kk. Wait thomy updated to cm kk all by himself.
All these just proves that htc did not learn anything. thought they could be it you know the company that cares trying to give out the best for the lowest price and keep it updated as long as possible. Instead they are just like everybody else.
My dad bought a samsung tv today. It could not run the youtube app no matter what. I called samsung and they said it is not a problem from their side but from the developers of the app. Ok so f off and tnx for false advertisement (for 2 months). Then the wifi would not work. Called them again they said if it isnt 5m from the router (visual distance) it wont work. Which actually means hey you have a really crappy wifi chip so thats how we protect ourselves so we dont need to replace it.
Dont know where im going with it? I think that if we dont stand up to the industry and demand changes like i dont know a htc xda program for example or everyone slaps ceo of samsung for everytime youtube wont start, we are going to end up in a ditch from where we will not be able to come out. For christ sake i cant even connect a htc phone to a samsung tv anymore. And that should be normal???

Sorry bad day big rant but i am worried.

the OEM will only update if the SoC manufacturer is updaeting and still supporting the SoC...so because nvidia won't update our kernel htc wouldn't update too ...and to fix most issues we need newer kernel from them,..atleast 3.4.x so that really ALL will work fine with sense and even without...really bulls'it

Its a hard lesson learnt, only buy Qualcomm based chipset phones from now on. nVidia gives fancy names to their chipsets, however they are pathetic when it comes to supporting their chipset.
I think it has to do with HTC also.. Dont blame just nvidia. if HTC wanted they could have updated the phone as fas as i know. Thomy's ROM is working fine on hox and so does slimkat. Why don't HTC discuss it out with nvidia and both could have worked hard to give an update.
But see they both (HTC and nvidia) dont give support to old devices and try to work hard on throwing new devices every then and now. If they would have worked that hard (or even less than that) on giving support to hox, it might be a good decision..
Hox is a solid performing device which HTC d#tched early..

I bought this device to HTC, not to Nvidia. It is HTC responsability to update it.
Google nexus 7 has the same tegra3, and is perfectly working with kit kat.
First months, HTC also gives lots of updates to the oneX, saying they had changed its updating politic. Now, they said this. To bad, HTC. This is my 5th device, and I cant give you anoother chance anymore. I love all of my HTC phones, but this is my last one.

But on the other hand, they're really working hard to quickly update the One. It even has kitkat. The only thing HTC currently needs is more money to provide support to older devices...

The only giveaway on how htc will handle updates is when the new phone comes out. Our hox was perfectly supported till the one came out dont you remember?
And thomy did the update to kk all by himself so i dont think money is the problem here.

It's not enough to look good for the first year until the next device comes out and then suddenly drop almost all support. What happened with the Desire models, Sensation models and now HOX models will also happen to the One when the next "flagship" is announced.

They sure as hell aren't getting that money from me.
I see a main cause that HTC decided to not update our phone anymore in the fact that 90% of the users of a phone are just the basic users, who just leave everything on their phone as it was delivered. Only thing I see my friends changing on their Android phones are the wallpaper and their app shortcuts. Some of them change their widgets, some don't. And out of my whole circle of friends I am the only one who knows what a custom ROM is and what the most up to date Android version is. So why should HTC Update our device any further if the only people really concerning about these updates are "those geeks over at xda developers". If things were the other way around and 90% of the HOX owners around the world would trample HTCs HQ for not updating our phone and would take the same step as me and were not going to buy any other HTC phone anymore they would sure as hell update it to KK.
But as people dont do so, why should they update it.
The thing is that old versions of Android also mean more security concerns and possible app compatability issues in the future. Things like this are a concern for the average user and not so much us who know how to tinker with custom roms.
And my friends who have Android phones and who I'd call average users complain about lack of upgrades just as much as me. They still want their phones to have the newest features, up to date looks and all that. HTC being so horrible with updates means that people recognize then as a company with lack of support. And people don't pay hundreds of dollars/euros for just more than one years worth of support.

It's not like that. You don't see Samsung or Motorola not updating their old devices just because 90% of the users don't complain.
Samsung is going to update S3 to kitkat. and motorola has already confirmed that old devices are receiving kitkat. those devices don't even have large user base like that of HOX.
