Ok I'm getting mad (random reboots and sd card issues) - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

So I have had this baby for a few days now and am having serious problems! Random reboots are common when I try to open an app or settings tab, SD card not being scanned at startup where I manually have to unmount it, pop it out then reinsert it to get my apps, music and pics to show up. It shows up in settings as being in there just can't read it or says blank SD card. It's a SanDisk 16gb class 10 bought from WalMart. So far I am pised off, but want to ask if this is a software problem, or hardware, and if anyone has experienced the same. It is stock non-rooted. Return time or root (do I have to root to update) then update to MK1 and see if the problems still exist and if so then return. Thanks for any advice.

Many people have SD card related freezes/bootloops/battery drain issues.
Try using the tab for a day without the SD card and see if thats the problem ~

re problems
you could try a different SD card
this happened with my phone sometimes
and it was just a dodgy card / mount interface

I recommend updating to mk1 asap. There were a number of stability fixes. Was the sd card fat32 formatted?

Do I have to start fresh if I update or does it dirty flash over? I formatted the sd card in the tab, so I don't know what format it is but my pc reads it so...

I'd recommend doing a fresh update after a factory reset. Then slowly add your apps in case one of those is having an issue.
Since you formatted in the tab it's fat32. So no issue there. Another possibility is one or more files on the sd is corrupt you may want to go through them on your pc.

My DA self didn't even check to see what I was already on and I'm on MK1 already. Dang, I guess updating is not the solution after all.

Have you tried deleting the contents of the sd card and then copying just a handful of known, good files to it?
Maybe the index service is getting hung on a corrupt file causing the system to freak out.

Transferred everything from external Sd to internal and no more reboots So I don't know. Weird

Strange. Have you tried a different sd? Maybe the one you have has a problem.

I too am getting random reboots of the device. No SD card installed - took mine out a few days ago in an attempt to cure the issue. I am guessing that Samsung has stuffed up on the QC of these devices. Too many reports of reboots. Surely it must be a hardware problem causing the malfunction>?
Rooted mine using Root De La Vega and using P605ZSUBMJ6 rom - still getting the reboot, probably one a day.
Has happened when I tap on the screen opening Chrome, when scrolling screens (I use Apex Launcher) and has happened when I have been using the pen when scribbling notes.
Getting frustrated.
The device when being used us smooth, and fast, but these occasional reboots are driving me crazy. I bought mine as a grey import, and I just know sending it back will be a royal pain in the backside. So anything to try to resolve this would be awesome.

I haven't had any reboots since I moved the programs back to device storage or any weird no read the SD card issues. My music and pics show up fine now and no more problems with apps saying not installed. I am also NOT rooted, yet.

From what I've read in the forums mk1 resolved a lot of random reboots. I've got the US 32gb wifi version with mk1 and I've never had a reboot. I've had it for about 2 weeks, I use it about 5 hours a day.

Yes, unfortunately that's the case. Hopefully Samsung will release it soon for the 605.

Try moving all the content off the SD card to your PC. Then, use the device itself to format the card. After it's (re)formatted move all your content back to it.

SD card unexpectedly removed...

So I have searched for this error and no one seems to have an answer that fits my problem. I got an error after booting that stated SD card unexpectedly removed and gave me a triangle with an exclamation point in the center
the card works fine
it will mount up perfectly from recovery, i even pushed several roms to it and tried (cyanogen, RR, and SkyRaider) all three worked beautifully, but as soon as I boot up BAM "SD card unexpectedly removed" and I can't access anything
the computer reads it just fine so I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the card, also with it reading in recovery it seems there is nothing wrong with the phone
is this a problem with ROMs?
I could try to do a factory reset and see if that works... but its really annoying :\
any help?
I would try reformatting the card on your PC. The card may have a bad sector that the PC and Recovery ignore. The phone OS tends to be a little more picky about those sort of things.

This worked
Thank you, I am running good now
I noticed when I was trying to backup my SD card (pictures and whatnot) that some of the files were corrupt
I will make sure I keep a regular backup just in case its a sign of the card going bad
good thing is my titanium backups were all perfect

You are on the right path - don't forget, a good practice is to back up your SD card to your PC regularly.
Why? If (when really) the SD goes wonky, you have a PC backup of the card, and you can get another SD, format it on the PC, load the backups you made, and be back in business in short order.

My solution was to format and start over, that was the only thing that worked for me
I've gotten this a few times and it is a PITA because it resets all the notification sounds and also the phone reboots. Once it does it, the only way I can get it to work is to remove the card, put it in the PC, let Win7 do a fix and repair errors and then it will work. I tried removing and reinserting, and it would mount the card and immediately give me the 'sd card unexpectedly removed' message.
I tried reformatting, and the sd card worked for a while and then I got the 'unexpectedly removed" message again after a few days. The last time it gave me that message, I just did the repair errors thing again and it's been working without fail for about 4 days now. It seems like it's going to be an ongoing thing though.
I've been googling like a mad person trying to find a real fix for this. I saw a thread on Android central where they guy said he put his wife's card in his phone and it did the same thing; but worked fine in hers. He mentioned it might be related to the 2.2 OTA update. My problem did start after that update.
In another forum thread, someone posted that they bought a new card, and it gave them the same message. So it doesn't appear to be a bad card; which is what I originally thought. I'd hate to buy a new one and have same issue (i have a 16gb card currently).
(sorry for long post)
I have the same problem! I'm using a Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 2. Previously i've been running Froyo 2.2 over the phone with a 16 GB microSD Card without problem. Later i've been using a 2 GB microSD Card and works fine, but now i'm runnin' Gingerbread ROM From verizon with 16 GB microSD Card and the messages "SD Card unexpectedly removed" don't stop.... the card works fine over other phones... even the stereo of my car can read perfectly the card's content.
I don't know if this is a problem with the update or what????
I don't think in the versions of "Bad sectors" because i check everthing and the problem persist.
The problem appears when i'm playing music... later of that the problem appears at the camera, the file explorer or another app that tries to read the SD Card.
I reboot the phone and works fine but after a couple of minutes the same [email protected]$%&t appears again....
I'm tired of reading forums telling me that is a problem with the sectors... that is a LIE!
no matters the class of the card because i've tried with Class 2, Class 4 and works fine.
This night i'll go to the store that solds me that coursed card to change it!
if tomorrow my problem was solved i been writing at this same forum!

I do not think someone saying it is bad sectors means they are lying.
I think they are merely trying to help you determine what the problem could possibly be.

did you format the card and try again as suggested earlier? That usually clears up any issues with sd cards unless they're fubar'd. Just make sure you back your card up first.
Whenever my card does this I put it into my Windows computer, right click on the card and go to properties/tools/error checking/ and check both boxes and let it run. It fixes my issues every time without formatting the card.
I had that problem a while back with one of Verizon's updates after 2.2. Reformatted card. worked fine in other phones but still said same thing everytine I put it back in the dinc. Ended up getting a new SD card then all was fine.

If you have an ext extension on your sd use G-Parted (google it) to format your ext2/3/4 partition.

MicroSD card losing connection with phone = MTP issues on JB 4.1.1 official release

Every time I flash anything based on the official JB 4.1.1 release, my 32GB MicroSD card (Patriot brand?) freaks out. The phone will say it's "unexpectedly removed" and then adds it back in, and removes it, over and over.
It's happened on all three JB 4.1.1 ROM's I've tried.
I thought my MicroSD was going bad so I low-level formatted it in Windows (hated doing this) and still had trouble. But ONLY with the card in the phone. Windows usually liked the card just fine.
So what I did to resolve it was use Titanium Backup Pro to "freeze" the "MTP Application". After doing that, my MicroSD works great in the phone and AFAIK, I haven't lost any functionality. So I'm not sure what the "MTP Application" is or does, but so far.... so good.
This post is just a heads up to others, in case anyone else runs into this problem.
Or in case anyone wants to tell me WTF is wrong.
Ive had this issue as well twice. Both times I had to format the sd card in my pc and it will work fine for a while. Im curious to know if you are using es file explorer? Im thinking it might have something to do with this issue.

Hmm come to think of it I just recently purchased root explorer about the time all this started but surely an app couldn't cause this issue? Heck I dont know it happens so random it hard to pinpoint the problem thats causing it. If I figure it out I will let you know
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Ive been trying to duplicate the problem all day with no success. However I have froze the MTP app so maybe thats what the cause is? Would you happen to be using a sandisk micro sd? Because I am..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Ahh hah I duplicated the problem on my phone anyway. I used the my file app to move a rather large file from the internal sd to my external sd and afterwards it lost connection. I had to remove the sd card and install it several times to get it to mount back again. Im not sure if its the moving of the file or the my files app itself that is doing it. I also noticed the media scanner isnt running after moving the file. So I hadnt pinpointed the exact cause but im dang sure getting closer. And I dont think its a bad sd card because I tried another and it did it with it too
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
You were able to duplicate it even with MTP frozen?
Wow, I have yet to recreate the issue with MTP frozen.
My SD is a Patriot brand. Purchased at Fry's Electronics.

Yea it happened with MTP frozen and unfrozen. Ive tried freezing the my files app and every file explorer on my phone. I just cant put my finger on the cause it happens so random. But it seems me and you are the only ones having this issue so im wondering if we didnt get a bad flash when we updated. When I updated via kies it did not do a full wipe update it did what is known as a dirty flash which I never do because you end up with issues like this. So if we continue to ask each other questions we will eventually figure out what the common link as far as if its an app we are using and things like that.
So did you update via kies or odin?
If you updated via odin where did you get your firmware file file from and if you used odin was it odin on the pc or mobile odin?
And was your update a full or a dirty flash?
We are gonna figure this thing out one day lol.....
Edit.... well apparently we are not the only ones having this issue. Over on droid forums there are several s3'owners most on t mobile but anyway it appears there are a few phones out there with this problem and the only fix is to replace the phone and sd card because the phone ruins the card by unmounting it without stopping it first. My phone is still under warranty so I will be calling ATT tomorrow for them to replace my phone and throw a fit for them to replace my micro sd. I paid 48 bucks for this card and I think ATT should replace it since their faulty phone ruined the card
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Wow.
I had the problem with two or three different ROM flashes. So it wasn't just one ROM flash.
Each time, freezing MTP Application has resolved the issue for me.
I'm going on ~4 days now with my current ROM and no more issues since freezing MTP.
Maybe there are a couple different SD card related issues out there.
I had the same problem with ADATA and Kingston brand sd cards. I tried the Sandisk 8GB from my old phone and no problems so far.
Freezing the mtp app has seemed to slow it down. The only problem with freezing mtp is that is how the phone mounts to the pc. Mine just did it again but I unfroze mtp to hook my phone to the pc and right after I backed some stuff up and unplugged it, before I could freeze mtp again it unmounted the card. Ive also tried several different sd cards and several different sizes even tried a 2gb Samsung card with the same results. Im thinking hard about going back to ics to see if that will resolve the issue. ...

I found that my 64GB card was not recognized by the newer kernels - when I use the older kernels or stock, it is recognized, otherwise, the ROM attempts to read the card, and then states it is 'ready to be removed'.

Try reformatting the 64gb card to a fat 32 file system. 64gb cards come formatted exfat and some s3's have had trouble reading them. Put it in a pc into the card reader and open my computer. Then right click on the drive thats showing your card. Ex drive E or F. Mine is drive N. Once you right click on it click format and a box will pop up and you will see the box that says exfat. Click the drop down box and change it to fat32 then click format and your done. Once it finishes put it in your phone and it should recognize it...

garydv2002 said:
Well my 64gb micro sd came today from Amazon and from what ive read on xda and the net I would need to change the file system from exfat to fat32. So I put it in the pc pull up mini tools partition wizard and it gives me no option to format it, I try windows no option for fat32 only ntfs or exfat so I try a couple of others with the same results. Then I try hp format tool and finally format it to fat32 then put it in my phone and it says its damaged and needs formatting so I do and put it back in the pc and im back to exfat. So it seems to only work in my phone in the exfat format soooo im just gonna leave it alone. Oh I even tried formatting it in command prompt and changing the file format and it fails so now im starting to wonder if thats what happened to my old 32gb card and why I suddenly starting having trouble out of it when I updated to jb is because it was fat32. Maybe this new jb dont handle fat32 well or maybe my s3 dont like fat32. Hell I guess its just a mystery. ....
So I would suggest if your having sd issues try formatting your card to exfat and see if that helps the connection issues

SD Unexpectedly Removed - NO Remount

Ive searched the forums here as well as google, and find many S3 users facing a Verrrrry similar problem, where their SD card is "Unexpectedly Removed" and then Remounts itself, and the process repeats, causing battery drainage, loss of access to apps etc.. Mostly Related to a SanDisk manufacturing default with certain chips.
My problem however, is slightly unique, in that, mine does not remount itself once it has been "removed". Once physically removed, and checked on a PC, all my files are still there, in working order. Ive Formatted, both "quick" and full format to Fat32, and the card works fine for about an hour to maybe a whole night if Ive done it right before bed. It seems as soon as it starts to be accessed in any way for more than ten minutes, it gets "removed".
Ive tried the following to try and remedy the problem. (Im fairly broke so buying a new card is last resort in my case)
-Both Formats of the card several times.
-Put it in another phone which reads it, format, unmount safely, mount into my phone, and no luck, doesnt even see it
-Factory Reset incase of any bugs in software that may be causing a malfunction of any kind
-Full Wipe X3 + Change of ROM
Im going to be borrowing a friends card for the night tonight, a spare 2GB he has, and see if the phone repeats the error, or if it really is fault of the SD card in question.
Phone Specs
Rogers S3
Running Darth Stalker 4.1.2? and now AoCP_By_The_Collective5.95 4.2.2
Kernel:3.4.53-cyanogenmod-g361781f
SD Card: Lexar 16GB Class 4 Micro SD HC
Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing the problem? or does it really sound like the card is at fault? I question this only because the card works elsewhere, and works in my phone for the first little while, with or without files on it, after I format it..
I'll report back about the other card tonight.
Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I cant find this problem solved in any way, anywhere :s
Once you report back and if the new card works it sounds like the card. But if the second card fails it sounds like a hardware issue only if you tried different ROMS and kernels and going back to stock by using Odin.

[Q] SD Card Issues?

Hello everyone,
I just recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4. So far I really like it but I am having a problem. I have a 32 gig sd card plugged in and yesterday I tried putting some files on. Nothing fancy just music, a video, a couple kindle books, and some word documents. I had plugged the sd card into my computer dropped them on and put it back into my device. Well the device wouldn't find or acknowledge any of the files at all. It acted like they just didn't exist. So I plugged the sd card back into my computer and they were there. After a bit of rebooting my device I finally got it to acknowledge the stuff I put on. That lasted until I let the device go to sleep. This morning when I opened up my device everything was gone again. So I plugged it back into my computer and it was all actually deleted.
After that I tried putt stuff on it with the device tethered to my computer and the same thing happened. It wouldn't acknowledge anything kept on my sd card. Including kindle books.
I did some reading and just kept coming up with the kitkat and app compatibility issue that doesn't allow apps to save to sd but this doesn't seem like that. All of those posts seemed to be dated a few months ago so has that been fixed at all or is it still a problem and the only "fix" is rooting it? Is it related to the problem I seem to be having? If not what on earth is worng with it and how do I fix it?
I won't lie I am kind of a newb when it comes to anything beyond basic electronic issues so I really am at a loss for what is wrong with it.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Psylk87
P.s. Should I consider returning this tablet? The stuff I read about the kitkat seems like a huge problem when it has such a small amount of on board space. I have just basic stuff on it and still only have 6 gig on board left over. That means basically all storage will be on an sd card. I bought it to use for college so want to be able to take notes and reliably save stuff. Am I better off with a different tablet? If so what Android tablets would be best?

Any rooted tab is better.. Rooting it will allow you to fix your SD permission woes. More than likely the app you are using can't get access to the SD card thus why it shows up blank. Root the tab, and run the kitkat SD card fix app and never look back. This tab is great!

So basically it will always have the sd card issues thanks to kitkat? I tried opening the music and the video with the devices main video and music apps. But they also weren't showing at all when I went to look for them in the actual "My Files" section. Then when they totally deleted I got even more confused. It was 5 gigs of stuff just randomly deleted off the flash drive.
Is rooting hard? As mentioned I am a newb. I have never done anything like that and I have never used or worked with a rooted device. Won't it void the warranty and make it so I cant return it? It was fairly expensive so I am worried about ruining it haha.
I actually love the tablet so far so really disappointed with the issue. I have until the 14th of August to return it so I need to decide quickly.

Some people on this forum have reported that towelroot works on Tab Pro 8.4. It should be as easy as installing an apk and tapping a button. I already have CM11 installed so I didn't try it though..

Hi
I'm not new in flashing ROMs but I think somewhere I go wrong...
I had the Australian stock ROM and I thought to try a little bit de-bloated ROM to check if its better...
As I'm ALWAYS doing I did make a recovery full backup of my tablet and copied the TWRP Backup in my Ext. SDCard with the intention to move it in my PC for security. Reading how to flash the new ROMs, couple of times have been mentioned that I have to wipe EVERYTHING before I flash them... Against my better judgment I wiped my SDCard too and of course I wiped the new ROM too...
Oh well I thought I will restore my Backup and try again
1) TWRP did NOT read the backup from Ext. SDCard.
2) I d/l an Aussie ROM from SAMIFILES to start again and copy the TWRP Backup in SDCard in case something wrong etc...
Then All Hell Break loose
After Flashing the Full factory ROM I had in my tablet few only apps without ANY Google apps and I couldn't access my Ext SDCard...
When I took out the card to copy it in my PC and from there to tablet the card was corrupted loosing my original Backup...
After that I don't know how many times I've tried factory or XDA ROMs with all the time not able to access my Ext. SDCard (New one, works fine elsewhere) despite I tried ALL the SDFix apps in Playstore... I tried to change the properties of the card manually too but the same...
PLEASE can help me to Fix my Ext SDCard as the tablet is almost useless without it?...
have you tried copying the files to your main memory, then transfer those files from main memory to your memory card using the built in File Manager ?

Any rooted tab is better.. Rooting it will allow you to fix your SD permission woes. More than likely the app you are using can't get access to the SD card thus why it shows up blank. Root the tab, and run the kitkat SD card fix app and never look back.

There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about the SD card permission changes brought by KitKat, and I do not believe the OP's issues are caused by those changes. We are unfortunately to the point where if someone has any trouble at all with an SD, they blame the KitKat permission changes; which is simply false in many cases. The KitKat SD changes have to do solely with write permission access and do not affect the ability to read the SD. The following article explains it well:
http://www.androidcentral.com/kitkat-sdcard-changes
And the KitKat changes certainly would not cause the card to be read after a reboot, then randomly not readable later, as the OP described. All this is pointing toward an issue other than how KitKat handles SDs.
I would suggest re-formatting the SD to FAT32 (on that subject, what is it presently formatted to?) and seeing if that helps. I saw a very similar thread on the HTC One (M8) forum where the person was having trouble with the phone reading content on the SD (worked fine on other devices), was blaming the KitKat rule changes, and simply formatting the card fixed it right up. Also, try a different SD card, if you have access to one.
If that doesn't work, its possible where is some software or (hopefully not) hardware issue such as a broken SD tray. But let's try to format the card and see if that does the trick.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear... I CAN see the Ext.SD but I can NOT write... The card (2nd) it's empty and I can write in it files in my PC's Card reader which I can see in my tablet... I CAN NOT write a file or make a folder or anything when the card it is inside the tablet...
That's why I said the tablet it is almost useless as I can use only the native 16GB minus...
EDIT:
Problem SOLVED for whoever need to know how go here: http://winaero.com/blog/unlock-external-sd-card-writing-for-all-apps-in-android-4-4-kitkat/
Thank you guys for the help so far. Sorry I am a bit slow but my laptop died on me and I have been dealing with that.
I am glad to hear its more than likely just an sd card problem not the kitkat problem. I really don't want to root it. I actually adore this device and don't want to had to return it.
I have played with it more and I am getting stuff like pictures and videos taken on the device to save to sd so it is reading the sd card. It just wont read what is placed on it externally. Is is maybe that I have to tether and cant pull the sd card out?
I did reformat the sd card with the device. So it is formatted to the device. But it still wont acknowledge stuff I drop on it only stuff that is saved on it from the device itself. But I do know its working because its showing pictures I have taken with the device on the sd card in the built in file manager. So whatever it is it's not the card reader slot.
I am going to try xdm9mm's suggestion and see if that will work. If not what else should I try?
Before I can test another sd card I need to buy one (I looked and only had the one extra lying around). So what card do you guys use on it with success?
You're taking the card out and using a card reader? I think I know your problem, the same thing happened to me when swapping cards with my phone. You have to go into the system settings, and under general, select storage. From there you can unmount the microSD card before taking it out. If you don't do that, it won't read the card properly when you put it back in.

Every time I have taken it out I have used the unmount section. Originally I unmounted it put it in the adapter and plugged it into my computer. Then I dragged and dropped everything I wanted on it to it. Once I had done that I used "safely remove" on the computer and then plugged it back into the card reader on my tablet. That is when it wouldn't read anything at all. I reset it several times and finally got it to read for a minute but then when the tablet went to sleep it self deleted everything on the card. I am thinking the self deleting may be fluke because I have been able to save pictures taken by the device on it with no trouble. It just won't read anything I put on myself.
The whole thing is a bit confusing lol. I even took it to a computer shop in town but the guy had no clue what I was trying to explain. I am going to try another sd card and try tethering the device to the computer to drop in some new files. Hopefully that will help.

Hrm. Another possibility, have you tried filling up the card, say with video files, then checking from the PC to see if they all play? Most of the really cheap memory cards are fake (including on Amazon), they only have a tiny capacity, and the controller is set up to loop, so it will write the data without giving any errors, and the files will be indexed, but the data isn't actually saved anywhere.

sd card unmounted/removed unexpectedly!

Hi friends, Im using 64gb class 10 sandisk sd card. So after updating to lollipop i have been getting these errors frequently and i have to restart the handset to fix it temporarily. I had this issue on kitkat as well but happened only rarely like once a month or so.
These two things happened unfortunately,
1) i had dropped my phone on carpet from 2 feet after lollipop update. I wonder if the phone couldn't handle it!
2) i removed the sd card without unmounting it from settings and immediately got the error and kept happening after that.
so i am confused what caused the issue. Is the connector loose or what is the problem. this is very annoying!
I have formated sd card, reset handset and tried another sd card and still the same issue. sd card is detected on the pc. Happens with transcend sd card as well. Please advise i am confused. do i take it to the service center. will they find out if it was a physical damage?
In my experience that happens when cards start to go bad. Maybe once to often of removing without unmounting first?

yes i did remove the sd card a couple of time without unmounting, however as i said that even my 8gb trancend card threw the same error... im gonna try another 64gb card and see the result.. still more replies would be appreciated
so i noticed that the issue kept happening even with 3 different sd cards in the phone. Surprisingly the error also popped up without the sd card. I am assuming this is an issue with lollipop software? can someone please shed some light on this ****!

Do a factory reset. Lollipop has no such issue.
