sd card unmounted/removed unexpectedly! - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi friends, Im using 64gb class 10 sandisk sd card. So after updating to lollipop i have been getting these errors frequently and i have to restart the handset to fix it temporarily. I had this issue on kitkat as well but happened only rarely like once a month or so.
These two things happened unfortunately,
1) i had dropped my phone on carpet from 2 feet after lollipop update. I wonder if the phone couldn't handle it!
2) i removed the sd card without unmounting it from settings and immediately got the error and kept happening after that.
so i am confused what caused the issue. Is the connector loose or what is the problem. this is very annoying!
I have formated sd card, reset handset and tried another sd card and still the same issue. sd card is detected on the pc. Happens with transcend sd card as well. Please advise i am confused. do i take it to the service center. will they find out if it was a physical damage?

In my experience that happens when cards start to go bad. Maybe once to often of removing without unmounting first?

yes i did remove the sd card a couple of time without unmounting, however as i said that even my 8gb trancend card threw the same error... im gonna try another 64gb card and see the result.. still more replies would be appreciated

so i noticed that the issue kept happening even with 3 different sd cards in the phone. Surprisingly the error also popped up without the sd card. I am assuming this is an issue with lollipop software? can someone please shed some light on this ****!

Do a factory reset. Lollipop has no such issue.

SD card unexpectedly removed...

So I have searched for this error and no one seems to have an answer that fits my problem. I got an error after booting that stated SD card unexpectedly removed and gave me a triangle with an exclamation point in the center
the card works fine
it will mount up perfectly from recovery, i even pushed several roms to it and tried (cyanogen, RR, and SkyRaider) all three worked beautifully, but as soon as I boot up BAM "SD card unexpectedly removed" and I can't access anything
the computer reads it just fine so I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the card, also with it reading in recovery it seems there is nothing wrong with the phone
is this a problem with ROMs?
I could try to do a factory reset and see if that works... but its really annoying :\
any help?
I would try reformatting the card on your PC. The card may have a bad sector that the PC and Recovery ignore. The phone OS tends to be a little more picky about those sort of things.

This worked
Thank you, I am running good now
I noticed when I was trying to backup my SD card (pictures and whatnot) that some of the files were corrupt
I will make sure I keep a regular backup just in case its a sign of the card going bad
good thing is my titanium backups were all perfect

You are on the right path - don't forget, a good practice is to back up your SD card to your PC regularly.
Why? If (when really) the SD goes wonky, you have a PC backup of the card, and you can get another SD, format it on the PC, load the backups you made, and be back in business in short order.

My solution was to format and start over, that was the only thing that worked for me
I've gotten this a few times and it is a PITA because it resets all the notification sounds and also the phone reboots. Once it does it, the only way I can get it to work is to remove the card, put it in the PC, let Win7 do a fix and repair errors and then it will work. I tried removing and reinserting, and it would mount the card and immediately give me the 'sd card unexpectedly removed' message.
I tried reformatting, and the sd card worked for a while and then I got the 'unexpectedly removed" message again after a few days. The last time it gave me that message, I just did the repair errors thing again and it's been working without fail for about 4 days now. It seems like it's going to be an ongoing thing though.
I've been googling like a mad person trying to find a real fix for this. I saw a thread on Android central where they guy said he put his wife's card in his phone and it did the same thing; but worked fine in hers. He mentioned it might be related to the 2.2 OTA update. My problem did start after that update.
In another forum thread, someone posted that they bought a new card, and it gave them the same message. So it doesn't appear to be a bad card; which is what I originally thought. I'd hate to buy a new one and have same issue (i have a 16gb card currently).
(sorry for long post)
I have the same problem! I'm using a Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 2. Previously i've been running Froyo 2.2 over the phone with a 16 GB microSD Card without problem. Later i've been using a 2 GB microSD Card and works fine, but now i'm runnin' Gingerbread ROM From verizon with 16 GB microSD Card and the messages "SD Card unexpectedly removed" don't stop.... the card works fine over other phones... even the stereo of my car can read perfectly the card's content.
I don't know if this is a problem with the update or what????
I don't think in the versions of "Bad sectors" because i check everthing and the problem persist.
The problem appears when i'm playing music... later of that the problem appears at the camera, the file explorer or another app that tries to read the SD Card.
I reboot the phone and works fine but after a couple of minutes the same [email protected]$%&t appears again....
I'm tired of reading forums telling me that is a problem with the sectors... that is a LIE!
no matters the class of the card because i've tried with Class 2, Class 4 and works fine.
This night i'll go to the store that solds me that coursed card to change it!
if tomorrow my problem was solved i been writing at this same forum!

I do not think someone saying it is bad sectors means they are lying.
I think they are merely trying to help you determine what the problem could possibly be.

did you format the card and try again as suggested earlier? That usually clears up any issues with sd cards unless they're fubar'd. Just make sure you back your card up first.
Whenever my card does this I put it into my Windows computer, right click on the card and go to properties/tools/error checking/ and check both boxes and let it run. It fixes my issues every time without formatting the card.
I had that problem a while back with one of Verizon's updates after 2.2. Reformatted card. worked fine in other phones but still said same thing everytine I put it back in the dinc. Ended up getting a new SD card then all was fine.

If you have an ext extension on your sd use G-Parted (google it) to format your ext2/3/4 partition.

[Q] SD Card makes my phone hang constantly.

I have a Sandisk Ultra Class 10 64GB card. Worked great for 5 months. A week ago, my phone started hanging like crazy. First 2-3 times a day, then 20-30 times a day. I factory reset my phone, but with the same problem.
Then I removed the SD card and phone started working perfectly again. Inserted the SD card, then same phone hanging problem.
You may note, I have never got any SD error message. The phone only hangs.
Any idea if this can be repaired with a format of the SD card or is it a hardware failure ?
Help will be appreciated.

I formatted it to FAT32 when I bought it 5 months ago. Working great for 5 months. Haven't received any Read or Write errors yet.
Would the phone hang because of an SD card?

Are you using the SD card in Fat32 or exFat file system ? I had a similar kind of issue before. Remove the card and using a card reader, connect it to PC to check for possible malware/virus on the card. And then format the card completely on PC( not on phone) and most probably it should solve the issue.

Yes it can cause issue
Format it again
insert card, if there is no issue restore data after scanning with good antivirus.
The very first day i got my Note i had this problem,(samsung 32GB card.
after several resets etc same problems, it was so bad that it even crashed the radio part of the device!
I was about to return the device when i remembered that we had similar issues with the Htc pro 2 with windows mobile,
After a few minute of scanning my brain it hit me, Pictures and thumbnails!
I then deleted all pictures from the card and thumbnails and behold, problem gone.
In my case it was a corrupted picture or thumbnail that was crippling the device, but if i use the card in other devices as the galaxy s 3 mini there was no problems there.
Use exFAT!
It's better than FAT32 and it has file support that is bigger than 4gb
Damm! Its hung twice again, without the SD card... And in the last 6 months never hung even once.
What do I do?

Get it from here/sammobile and flash as instructed in post#1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696
Maybe it's a corrupted file in it.. Try formating it then try it when it's empty, if there is no issues then yea there is a corrupted file was in it..
Also try to make it exFAT with perseus or RedPill kernel, as far as I know, they support exFAT..

SD Unexpectedly Removed - NO Remount

Ive searched the forums here as well as google, and find many S3 users facing a Verrrrry similar problem, where their SD card is "Unexpectedly Removed" and then Remounts itself, and the process repeats, causing battery drainage, loss of access to apps etc.. Mostly Related to a SanDisk manufacturing default with certain chips.
My problem however, is slightly unique, in that, mine does not remount itself once it has been "removed". Once physically removed, and checked on a PC, all my files are still there, in working order. Ive Formatted, both "quick" and full format to Fat32, and the card works fine for about an hour to maybe a whole night if Ive done it right before bed. It seems as soon as it starts to be accessed in any way for more than ten minutes, it gets "removed".
Ive tried the following to try and remedy the problem. (Im fairly broke so buying a new card is last resort in my case)
-Both Formats of the card several times.
-Put it in another phone which reads it, format, unmount safely, mount into my phone, and no luck, doesnt even see it
-Factory Reset incase of any bugs in software that may be causing a malfunction of any kind
-Full Wipe X3 + Change of ROM
Im going to be borrowing a friends card for the night tonight, a spare 2GB he has, and see if the phone repeats the error, or if it really is fault of the SD card in question.
Phone Specs
Rogers S3
Running Darth Stalker 4.1.2? and now AoCP_By_The_Collective5.95 4.2.2
Kernel:3.4.53-cyanogenmod-g361781f
SD Card: Lexar 16GB Class 4 Micro SD HC
Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing the problem? or does it really sound like the card is at fault? I question this only because the card works elsewhere, and works in my phone for the first little while, with or without files on it, after I format it..
I'll report back about the other card tonight.
Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I cant find this problem solved in any way, anywhere :s
Once you report back and if the new card works it sounds like the card. But if the second card fails it sounds like a hardware issue only if you tried different ROMS and kernels and going back to stock by using Odin.

SD Card Removed Unexpectedly?

After rooting my new Note 4, I'm randomly getting a notification that my SD Card was removed unexpectedly. I backed it up and tried reformatting it, but still see the message several time an hour. There is no issue with the card when connected to the computer, just randomly while in the phone.
Any ideas or suggestions?
I'm using a SanDisk Ultra 64g.
Thanks!

At least I know it's not just me. Hopefully one of these geniuses out here have a suggestion or fix for it...
It does it to me even more so than that.
Do you guys have spare cards you can try to see if it is the card of the phone? If you try with a spare card and it doesn't happen, try formatting the original card after you copy data to a computer.

I did try another card, with the same results. I backed up everything to my PC using a card reader with no issues. Reformatted the card the first time on PC with the same results. Tried formatting on the phone, same results. It seems to happen a little less frequently now, but still happening. If no one makes me feel stupid with a simple answer to the problem, my next step is a factory wipe and see what happens, but would really like to avoid that...

External storage suddenly removed error

Anyone else getting random "External Storage suddenly removed" message? It's happened to me randomly about 4 times since I got the US version phone yesterday. I have to slide out the SD card and put it back in for it to be read.
Please try cleaning SD card contacts and re-install or test existing SD card on another phone. Have you tested with a different SD card?

This card was in my Galaxy Note 3 for the past year with no problem. I took it out and used it directly into the ZF2. Maybe I need to reformat? No I haven't tested it with a different SD card yet. I will have to try that as well.

Which model of sd card is giving you problems? Sandisk Extreme and Extreme Pro are reported to be not compatible with Zenfone 2.
I ended up erasing it via the ZF and re-copying the files over to it, Hasn't given me that error since doing that. It's the 64gb class 10 Sandisk Ultra

@downshift00 i got that very same card of yours and yes it's been bugging me since I've got my zenfone... Not that it happens soooo often but it's random and make it unreliable when you think about it... I'm sure it will be fixed by a software update sometime since it does not appear to be hardware related ; when it happens if you simply logoff / login it will detect your card again at login without the need of removing physically the micro sd, thus it gotta be software related... Didn't try to reformat it already though. Well I'm happy not to be the only one in that boat .
I get the message "External storage inserted" or "Unexpectedly Removed" 20x a day. Brand new 64GB Sandisk (http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/420346/sandisk-extreme-microsdxc-uhs-i-64gb-for-action-cameras.html) ''
Not sure whether it's just a message after unlocking, only once I wasn't able to access my photo's on the SD card when it was really dismounted.
Make sure the SD card is pushed in all the way. I found that it took much more force to get it in on this phone compared to others.
