OK, so I installed the toolkit on my laptop, and so far have managed to unlock and root my phone.
Here is the problem.
When I boot to recovery, My phone comes up green, then the red triangle. Volume up and power gives me the Android system recovery (3) and a message on the bottom
E:Cant open /cache/recovery/command. all I can do is reboot the phone.
Ideally what I want is to be able to backup the phone, install a new kernel/rom and be able to restore it if I mess up.
Tried to search for help on the forum, but it didnt do me any good. Is there a newbie guide how to do this?
Thanks in advance

you have to flash custom recovery like CWM or TWRP
I have downloaded the CW ROM manager and installed rom manager v5.5.3.2 current recovery 5.x.x.x latest recovery 5.8.4.5. I boot into clockwork recovery mode. get the green circle with the arrow followed by the phone with the red triangle. Press volume up + power and get menu for android system recovery. With the menu
reboot
apply update from external
wipe data
Wipe cache
apply update from cache
bottom has a message E: cant open /cache/recovery/command
So i dont think I have accomplished anything except downloaded a useless app

I had 2.1 and root / super root and now I have 2.2 and root. I am using Steal's Deodexed Stock Rom. All is good except when I reboot into HBOOT I get 0.79 which doesn't really let me do anything with options except Fastboot, Recovery, Clear Storage, Simlock and HBOOT USB. I go into Recovery.
I get the Red Triangle with a ! in it.
I hold down the vol up and power and I get the Android system recovery and down at the bottom it says E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
The usual options with Android System Recovery such as reboot, apply sdcard:update.zip, wipe and wipe cache partition.
From here I can execute the windows-recovery.bat from a XP P.C. and get the menu that again says Android System Recovery only now I can usb toggle, Backup/Restore, Flash a zip, wipe, partition, other and power off.
It seems like I was able to get this latter menu before without the PC and windows-recovery.bat but now I can't.
Is this the way it works or am I missing something?
I have searched the forums several times and haven't really seen what might answer my question.
I do use Rom Manager (which I know doesn't work well for some people) and Titanium Backup.
Thanks
Hi peps!
My Desire is stuck within a boot loop (CM6.1 RC1 logo shows up again and again!)
This morning I flashed CM6.1 RC1 with rom manager! I noticed that i flahes it without GApps so I flashed again and now I got this anoying boot loop!
I think that its because of my old radio but strange thing is that it worked before and without the GApps!
in the bootloader screen it says
Radio:4.05.00.11
and when I enter recovery it starts "Android system recovery (2e)" and I cant install a new radio because it says the file isnt certificated!
Whats the best and simplest way to get clockwork mod (I KNOW that I had installed it once on my phone but now it doesnt seem so -.-) or a newer radio onto my phone?
Are there other older roms which will boot/flash with my recovery?
plz help
okay I solved it! The tricky part was, that I had no nandroid backup (anymore) and surprisingly no longer access to clockwork.
I downloaded fake-flash from modaco.com. This packs clockwork into a signed update.zip which can be launched from within the normal racovery.
You can grab it here:
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...unching-recovery-on-your-device-without-a-pc/
no I reflashed my radio, CM6.1 RC1 and then the gapps!
everything works now
Bootloop
Hey man,
Im getting similar problems when i wiped and installed CM 6.1.
The cm mod logo just reappears, and nothing further happens.
When i press power and volume down, and choose recovery, i just get this exclamation mark with a triangle around the mark over a desire.
Anyone got a suggestion to what i can do? the led seems to work fine.
Any help would be appriciated.
cheers
same
I HAD to put my sdcard in card reader delete any update.zip that might be on the root of card .Then downloaded opendesire rom from PC.Renamed it to update.zip and put on root sdcard and inserted back in phone.turn phone on while holding back button choose recovery wait for reboot. Then when red triangle appears hold vol up and press power button then release both wait till you see option to apply udate.zip from sdcard use volume buttons to select option then press power wait for new rom to install. That wipe before install was not a good idea think I will use this method to install all roms from now on.
help i downloaded the fake flash and renamed it as update and when i apply in the android system recovery it verifies and loads the bar halfway and stops
it says E:failed to verify whole-file signature E:signature verification failed installation aborted
why doesn't the fake flash by koush work

I think you need to install a custom recovery (ClockWorkMod) to do that. You can do it via ROM manager app available in the market.
Hi all,
if I will install the custom recovery (ClockWorkMod), I will be able to downgrade to the original recovery?
sorry, but I have been searching in the forum but I only found how to flas back the original rom...
...I received my device 3 days ago!! thx!!

Yes flashing an RUU will reinstate the original recovery
I have a UK Defy on T-Mobile, running the FIN III ROM from this site.
I had recovery mode working OK before, but now when I boot into it (Using the button in the app), I just get a black screen.
If I hold voldown + power, I get an android dude with a ! icon, but sometimes afterwards I see this go on to a menu that seems to be recovery mode (With images on the screen, which it didnt have before) but no options for backup/restore, only things like wipe data and reboot, all in blue text. It says "Android system recovery <3e>" at the top in red.
At the bottom, it says:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/caller
The original (working) version of cwm was all green text with no graphics, so something is different...
Any ideas on what I should do?

Yes, the factory recovery mod for 2.2 froyo is different then 2.1...the green one you mentioned is actually the custom recovery mode which you can boot in through clockworkmod recovery apk...
I still don't get your problem

usb debugging off and still get error
are you absolutely sure usb debugging is really off?
Do you have adb installed, if so - what happens if you plug in usb and do a "adb devices"? It shouldn't show up...
Also I have a question - isnt the point of recovery mode that it is independant of the OS? What happens if usb debugging is on, but your OS goes tits up - how can you enter recovery mode then? Can you disable it from outside the OS? If so, why is this not part of cwm?
Yes did that check I also have a custom clockwork installed so I guess I may have 2 recoveries installed. I guess I need to remove e3's and jusy ust clock work.
Enter recovery outside os is vol down plus power.
Cwm runs inside the os. So yes good question how do we install cwm in to take the place of the old recovery? Vol down plus power to boot cwm instead of a3

1. Uninstall > ROM manager and then CWM, make sure to clear cache data. Go to filemanager n delete Clockworkmod folder.
2. Installed simple plain CWM (for me it was defy_recovery-1218-0326-signed.apk)
3. Set USB Debugging OFF.
I dont know if it will work.. bt give it a try. Worked for me though.

This is an interesting question that I want to know as well.
In addition I was also thinking what if your phone is dead as far as ROM and OS goes but you have a backup file (cwm/nandroid). Do you just flash it with a booloader and then can you somehow recover your backup ?! (or do you need cwm/nandroid installed too)
(I'm new to all this, so apologies in advance...)
Wierd
My defy only boots into the recovery menu what to do now?
Problem with ClockworkMod Recovery
I was trying to install MIUI ROM but after performing a data wipe I got an
E: unknown volme for path [sd/ext]
Back Menu Button Disabled
Davik Cache wiped
message.
I'm now not able to use any of the options in the first clockwork mod recovery screen even though I can freely move throughout them. Whenever I choose one the background remains but nothing happens.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm afraid to reboot since I have no ROM installed.
take the battery out, put it back in then power on holding the volume down button then get back in recovery wipe again then flash again
