I have a UK Defy on T-Mobile, running the FIN III ROM from this site.
I had recovery mode working OK before, but now when I boot into it (Using the button in the app), I just get a black screen.
If I hold voldown + power, I get an android dude with a ! icon, but sometimes afterwards I see this go on to a menu that seems to be recovery mode (With images on the screen, which it didnt have before) but no options for backup/restore, only things like wipe data and reboot, all in blue text. It says "Android system recovery <3e>" at the top in red.
At the bottom, it says:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/caller
The original (working) version of cwm was all green text with no graphics, so something is different...
Any ideas on what I should do?

Yes, the factory recovery mod for 2.2 froyo is different then 2.1...the green one you mentioned is actually the custom recovery mode which you can boot in through clockworkmod recovery apk...
I still don't get your problem

usb debugging off and still get error
are you absolutely sure usb debugging is really off?
Do you have adb installed, if so - what happens if you plug in usb and do a "adb devices"? It shouldn't show up...
Also I have a question - isnt the point of recovery mode that it is independant of the OS? What happens if usb debugging is on, but your OS goes tits up - how can you enter recovery mode then? Can you disable it from outside the OS? If so, why is this not part of cwm?
Yes did that check I also have a custom clockwork installed so I guess I may have 2 recoveries installed. I guess I need to remove e3's and jusy ust clock work.
Enter recovery outside os is vol down plus power.
Cwm runs inside the os. So yes good question how do we install cwm in to take the place of the old recovery? Vol down plus power to boot cwm instead of a3

1. Uninstall > ROM manager and then CWM, make sure to clear cache data. Go to filemanager n delete Clockworkmod folder.
2. Installed simple plain CWM (for me it was defy_recovery-1218-0326-signed.apk)
3. Set USB Debugging OFF.
I dont know if it will work.. bt give it a try. Worked for me though.

This is an interesting question that I want to know as well.
In addition I was also thinking what if your phone is dead as far as ROM and OS goes but you have a backup file (cwm/nandroid). Do you just flash it with a booloader and then can you somehow recover your backup ?! (or do you need cwm/nandroid installed too)
(I'm new to all this, so apologies in advance...)

My defy only boots into the recovery menu what to do now?

I had just rooted (for the first time) my phone using this guide;
http://www.htcdesireforum.com/htc-desire-how-to/(guide)-rootin-flashing-rom/
That root went perfect. After that I flashed LeeDrOiD V2.3c (first v2.3b then 2.3c), also I flashed the accompanying radio with the number that matched my baseband version.
Then I used Titanium backup to restore everything, and it was perfect. Everything good.
Then I thought the Super Circle Battery looked nice, and tried installing it. It's this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724778
I first tried to flash this zip file from that page; scbm_A_white_number.zip the same way I had just flashed LeeDrOiD. Nothing happened.
Then I went to The Ultimate Online Tool Kitchen ( http://circle.glx.nl/ ) which is where the Super Circle Battery guys tell you to go.
I chose Flashable zip only, and under "framework-res.apk" I chose my ROM Leedroid V2.3c. It then makes a zip file, and I tried flashing that.
That certainly did something, and when I rebooted afterwards it was stuck in endless reboot!
I can only go to the white screen and then ClockwordMOD recovery screen now. I tried doing a factory reset there, and wiping dalvik cache as well, but it just starts up Leedroid and then goes into endless Leedroid boots.
I've also tried doing a hard reset, but it still just loads up the Leedroid loader, and goes into endless boot.
Please help!

That's what I thought (or hoped for), the problem is I can't get the Leedroid ROM zip on to my SD (be course I can't open it as a disc drive with my USB in the boot screen) , and it's not on there any more after I flashed it the first time.

if you put your device in recovery mode, (hold vol down and press power when device is off, then choose recovery from the menu) scroll down to where it says mounts and storage, choose this then choose, mount usb storage. you can connect your cable and use your sd card as a disk drive.

Probably or you can restore a nandroid. You did make one of course before flashing mods
Sometimes it just takes that long to flash the Circle Batt zip. When I was still on Lee, I kind of panicked too when my Desire got into the LeeDroid bootloop. Did several battery pulls, and was just about to give up when I left it to boot by itself for about 10 more minutes (too long, I know), and voila--the circle batt indicator showed up on the top bar, right alongside the network signal. Don't know why, but the Circle Batt zip actually took longer to flash than the ROM itself.
I did everything correct and for some reason, my phone keeps rebooting to the clockwork mod screen...it will not reboot and restart like normal... what gives? Do I have to ODIN and REDO this whole thing?

If it auto reboots and you literally can't do anything, all you can do is a battery pull. Then start from scratch. Hopefully, you can still go into download mode.
Well, I can reboot and then it just goes to the Clockwork Mod Recovery Screen. When I click reboot system now, it does so and then just goes to the clockwork screen again....
Sounds like you may want to odin then retry cwm
Do you have any NAND backups? If you do you could try that, if not then Odin is your friend!
Sounds like you tried to goto a new Rom like i did
Odin then follow directions completely
When i was going to bonsai from ee i forgot to install cwm3 first and my phone started to do what your phone is doing

Yeah I think I may have not ran the ext4 zip file....
So, the steps are as follows...
One Click it....etc...etc...
Backup
Run the ext4 zip
Flash Rom (in my case, Bonsai)
reboot?
Is there any significant performance boost or anything with this phone? I NEEDED to do it with my HERO...but, this phone seems super fast and nice without anything needing to be done. I do like modding and such, but do not want to deal with occasional glitches just to gain some slight speed and battery drainage..
Ok so i didn't put phone into USB debugging and it always goes to cwm screen
Can I just use a sd card reader and flash a rom to the sd card and then use the sd cards files?
For you since your at a cwm boot loop
Odin
Usb debugging
Root with cwm3
Reboot to cwm3
It will auto back up
Flash ext4
Flash bonsai
Go to cwm3 main screen
Go to backup and restore
Goto advanced restore
Pick your backup
Click restore data
Reboot
I had to do this because on my old Rom i had problems with my phone being super slow bonsai fixed it

Mod can you close this
Hello and thank you for taking time to read this post.
I attempted to root my At&t Samsung Galaxy S3 today then install tha AOKP Rom, and it back fired due to poor instruction, and poor execution. At the moment my phone, whenever it turns on "inititing swager" (with a pink horse and gears) then gives me a pop-up saying "Unfortunatly the process com.google.process.gapps has been stopped." and "Unfortunately, Setup Wizard has stopped". Whenever I hit ok, the other shows up. I have access to the pull down menu, but can't open any of the links on it. I can also shut it off then get back to the root(hat menu) menu. From which I have tried the option "wipe data/Factory Reset" link, but that changes nothing when I reboot. At this point I am just looking for a way to get it back to factory settings or at least working!
How I got here:
1. Rooted the phone through my computer (successfully it seemed)
-Using this tutorial: /watch?v=bIUA1IxiJzo
2.Started puting AOPK on!
(with this: /watch?v=qzcR-G7EKSw
Look, I know none of you have to help me but any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I hav looked through other forums about the gapps error, but the difference is mine is not running to the home screen so I can't go to application manager!
Two suggestions:
1) Put your phone in recovery mode (i.e. where you can do factory resets from), transfer a different ROM image over to the device (I'd use adb to do that from recovery mode), flash it, clear data/cache/etc., reboot the phone, and hope it works.
2) Put the phone in download mode (Vol Down + Home + Power; just like entering recovery, but Vol Down instead of Vol Up), and use Odin to flash a rooted stock image as detailed here; put CWM / TWRP / whatever recovery you want to use on the phone again, and get back to flashing ROM images from there.
In the future, try to be careful of what ROMs you flash... not everything works very well, as you've just discovered.
Thank you for responding so quickly! I am attempting the first method, however i am not sure how to transfer a different rom image(im assuming the adb stands for Android Debug Bridge). I was using the internal SD, but I can plug it the phone into my computer, and it says no drivers found for this device, where before it recognized the phone. Once I get that I can clear the other data and restart.
Your help is very appreciated!

How can I post a doubt in XDA forum?
What custom recovery is on your phone? I suggest installing Philz Touch via Odin if possible and then flash a new rom from an external SD card.
hi guys,
today i made a huge mistake. i was trying to deinstall the cm9 by just wiping my phone. accidentaly i made a "system wipe" with my recovery. now my phone ist stuck in the "this build is for development purposes only" screen. i tried to reboot into recovery via the aio kit - error: device not found. (led not flashing, not even when i connect it to the "normal" loading adapter). i just read another thread which ended in sending the device back to htc. i wonder if there is any possibility to safe my phone from that.

Are you able to acces the Bootloader by closing the phone and restart it by keeping pressed at same time VOLUME DOWN + POWER ?
Be careful: Do NOT press volume UP!, Do not hold Volume Down for too long!
Once you are in the bootloader you should be able to:
A:Go into recovery and repair it from there in you have the ROM on your SD card.
B:If you are unable to acces recovery mode from bootloader, try to use the All In One Tool and flash the TWRP Recovery (the one in the right part of the window) also, note that there are too version, CDMA and GSM, if you have a sim card flash GSM, if you do not have a simcard use CDMA.
Let me know how it went

Hm,
Well since you cant remove the battery on this phone, id suggest to just let it finish with what it has left off of the battery. once it is closed try to recharge it and then try to boot in recovery, ofc you might not be able to do this today, depends how much battery you had left when the problem started, but it's a chance, also if it's rooted you bootloader will be unlocked so i doubt HTC will grant you warranty for it (not 100% about this though). let us know if you manage to do any progress with it after you manage to make it close.
cheers

If u have the ROM in the SD card just flash it and reboot other wise as he mentioned above

Ok, last night i went to sleep.
You now need to find a way to put a ROM on your SD card. whatever ROM you choose make sure you have the correct kernel for it (in every post for ROMs you will find a download link to the correct kernel aswell).
So what you do now (after you have the ROM .zip file on your SD card and your Kernel file in your PC) is:
-Put your phone into Bootloader, Select fast boot and connect the USB cable, and make sure it tells on your phone "FASTBOOT USB"
-Then in All in One select "Flash Kernel" and browse to the correct Kernel, and flash it.
-Reboot your phone in Recovery mode, you have the option in the fastboot screen.
-In the Recovery menu select Factory Reset -> Wipe System.
-While still in recovery go to "Install update from SD card" (or something similar) and choose the ROM .zip file, wait for it to be flashed
-reboot your phone (1st boot is always a bit slower, could take up to 5 minutes).
-after you get to your main screen, reboot the phone again and flash a Google Apps (gapps) .zip file. You will find the correct version from your ROM in the official thread of the ROM. You DO NOT run a factory reset, wipe system or anything like that for flashing Gapps.
Good luck.

"Will either push the selected root file to your Internal Storage, guide you through flashing Custom Recovery via Odin. When the device reboots it will bot to recovery so root files can be flashed + rename the recovery restore files. Or install the zip file via adb sideload after recovery boots. plus busybox will also be installed"

The toolkit told me to press any button when i was in sideload mode. So i pressed and it said "error: closed" then i sayed press any button when file installed ready to reboot (something like that). Now, i'm still plugged to the computer. I'd would like to start all over. What should i do? Reboot system now? unplug the phone? Take the battery out? I already tried power + volume up combo. It reboot and goes back to where i was.
