[Q] Nexus 7 2013 not shown in Windows Explorer. - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

This used to work. I plug the USB cable into the device and Nexus 7 showed up as a drive. Now it fails. The device driver stops saying "device unplugged". I have tried everything I can find online. Nothing works. No Nexus 7 shows in device manager to try to fix drivers,
What I can find suggests that the drivers are the same for all the Nexus devices, and my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 both work fine. I am at a loss of what to try. It's particularly annoying since it used to work and I have changed nothing,

Have you installed the Google USB driver?

In case of ADB problems, try koush 's universal ADB driver.

Try this

It's the only thing that worked for me.

I just rooted mine yesterday and ran into the same problem.
Go to Settings>Storage. Click the menu button in the top right and select USB Computer Connection. Make sure Media Device (MTP) is selected. Your computer should now recognize your Nexus 7.

I can't use that approach since there are NO Nexus devices showing in Device Manager. And strangely, everything works fine for Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, but both of our Nexus 7s have this problem.

GNex not recognized in Windows 7

I need help getting my Windows 7 x64 to recognize my GNex.
Whenever I plug it in I dont hear the default USB plug-in sound (Windows), but my phone is charging.
I cannot mount my storage either in recovery or inside Android.
My device manager is not showing errors and my GNex at all.
Tried installing the Google USB Driver from SDK, no luck
Tried PDANet which did not install because of missing drivers.
Use a program called usbdeview and uninstall the drivers you have installed for the Gnex. Then use the galaxy nexus toolkit to install the correct ones.
You dont by chance have the "fast charge" mod enabled through your kerenel do you? Because if so you will need to disable the feature first before plugging up to you Windows machine.
This is starting to become an "epidemic".. :O
I can almost guarantee that it's usb fast charge, devs should really put a warning on that

I too have a Win7 x64 laptop and had a similar issue, but the Device Manager did report an error with the Android 1.0 and/or Samsung driver. I had to manually update driver for it to work thru Device Manager.
Woops. Well there are some ways to check what is disturbing the connection. Let's start at the beginning:
Check if your phone is configured to interact with your computer. After conneting your phone you should get a selection list in your phones notification bar. Make sure to select usb storrage from that list.
On your windows computer go to [start] and type "device manager". After the application (that shows all hardware devices connected to the system) loaded connect your phone and check if something changes. If everything works all right you should get your nexus. If a question mark apears double click it to check the problem.
Try yo connect your device to another computer or with another cable. If the problem is not solved by above steps contact your seller.
If this is not possible install Airdroid and connect your phone to your computers browser or ES file Explorer to browse your pc over the network

Ok, I'm having this issue, but Windows doesn't even recognize anything is plugged in! I tried it on a TON of computers at work with several different USB cables. Nothing! All I get is charging, but no options in the top menu or anything. Is this a toasted Nexus? I just got it, now I can't even transfer files to its storage. I've been transferring files through dropbox...which is annoying...if it is USB Fastcharge, how do I disable it?
Their IS a fix for this, but we need the code to get into the PhoneUtil menu and turn USB back on.
It's an issue with Samsung phones apparently, and here's a fix someone found a while ago.
http://blog.vacs.fr/index.php?post/...ot-detected-problem-on-Android-Samsung-phones
We just need the PhoneUtil code for the Galaxy Nexus and we should be all set.
Check your drivers

What annoys me is that when I got the phone it was already rooted and I didn't have a chance to try it stock or back up the original. It was rooted with an older version, so I flashed 4.0.4 on it. Check out the reviews on newegg I'm not alone in reporting a messed with Galaxy Nexus.

My issue is definitely hardware. I sent my GNex back and they sent me back a new one which I received yesterday. I checked and this one wasn't previously rooted or Unlocked. It worked for a day (worked as in windows saw it and I could xfer music/books/comics to it) after I get home from work Windows stopped recognizing it. I did NOTHING to the phone, it just stopped being seen by windows. I only used the cable that came with it and charged it the night before using the supplied adapter, but the USB still stopped working. Last resort I did a system restore to the phone and the USB still doesn't show up in anything ,Tried 5 of my Windows PC's A bunch of PC's at work, my friends Mac, my Ubuntu powered Netbook, my Xbox360 and PS3, even the Transformer Prime using the keyboard dock. This is telling me it's a hardware issue with the Device. Might be somthing wrong with the latest batch of GNex's but the USB seems to give out. Even if I put the phone in ODIN mode NOTHING recognizes it. So, before you all waste your time finding a fix, this is 100% absolutly a hardware issue with these phones, I don't know why, but I had Two bad ones in a row, and am Hoping my 3rd isn't borked too.
I have a bad history with Android phones....My first Nexus One wouldn't stay on, so I got a replacement from HTC. My first two G2x's would constantly reboot, It wasn't until the 3rd one that I got a working one. Now I'm hoping I don't have to go through 4 bad Galaxy Nexus' before getting one that actually works!
I have the opposite luck with tablets....the Novo7, Iconia A100 and Transformer Prime have been perfect outa box. This ordeal with android phones makes me seriously consider exchanging the GNex for an iPhone4s....but the iPhone4s screen is SOOOOO tiny!!!

[Q] My Galaxy Nexus is not charging or recognized in USB under any Windows edition

First of all, I have searched everywhere in the forums (in all sections) outside the forms in all means to find anybody with the exact symptoms that is happening to my galaxy nexus but to no avail
There are many cases where others has faced issues but not as unique as this one.
PC = Windows 7 (64bit) + Windows 7 (32bit) + Windows Vista + MAC OSX + Windows XP(32bit) .. etc
I have been seeing all the issues (common or unique) with charging and USB in GNex but mine is truly a unique one.
I got this phone 2 days ago on stock 4.0.2 locked/unrooted from a Blondie.
The issue is when connecting the USB via PC in Android mode (while inside the OS)! Thephone doesn’t event register in windows (i.e. not connection sound or anything shows up in the system trey or device manager)
The phone doesn’t charge as well when it’s ON (in Android Mode) and connected to the PC.
In simple and bare words .. there is no spark!? it’s as there is no physical action happened in the PC nor the Phone?
Here are facts that might ring a bell to figure out what’s going wrong here:
The phone charges normally via AC (stock charger or other chargers) and there is no issue at all in both cases wither the phone is switched ON or OFF.
Fastboot is properly connected and recognized in windows and the phone gets recognized when connected in ODIN as well and I am able to flash (already did a couple of stock rom flashing using Galaxy Nexus ToolKit v5.6
It also worth mentioning that when the phone is OFF and connected to PC via USB it shows the bolt icon and start charging for 5 seconds and reboots again to the bolt icon and this gets repeated endlessly.
I have also tried 4 different Micro-USB cables just to be fair.
Because of this, I am unable to root the phone and this is driving me crazy!
Please help me out here.

It could be an issue with the micro-USB port on the phone. Some people have started having issues after a few months, myself included. If that's the case you have to get it serviced.

Drivers won't fix your problem.
Will the cord you are using charge the Galaxy Nexus if you put it into a wall charger?

Yes, it perfectly charges from AC using thew same cord.
For a temporary solution, you can use an app called software data cable, which allows you to access the file system using ftp. Or any app that does this for the matter.

The only thing I can think of is you either have a defective phone, a defective USB port, or you are trying to use a low power port.
I just plugged mine into a desktop that doesn't have a Nexus driver and it worked fine.

I would say it's a defective USB port if fastboot/ODIN are not functioning. but both modes are working flawlessly and I always keep flashing stock roms!? such a weird issue!!!?
Low power port? Nope! I have USB 3.0 and 2.0!

Sounds silly, but did you try rebooting your computer? I had to do this the other day when mine wasn't recognizing my phone. Rebooted computer, worked fine after.
Samung's drivers are awful. I had to install, reboot, remove, reboot ad nauseum until I finally got the drivers to work. I also found I had to connect the phone then wait a few minutes before the computer would acknowledge the phone.
specteA 187,
I've only ever had the issue if I've tried USB ports on the front of my machine. For some reason those ports can be a bit flaky.
Plugging USB into the back of my machine causes no issues. Weird.
For me, on Windows 8, I have to switch from MTP to PTP, and then back to MTP for it to mount. It sure is wonky.

I found that if my computer doesn't recognize my phone, I put my phone into download mode then reboot back to normal and the computer will recognize it. Kind of a pain to have to reboot 2x but seems to work for me.
I've had 5 Samsung smartphones (Captivate, Infuse, GS2, SkyrocketGS2, and now the SGNote2) andI use an XPSP3 desktop computer and have never had any issues with computer recognizing phone until the Note2. Odin3 works like a champ on the Note2... it's the plug-n-play recognition for transferring files back and forth that's problematic. Yes, I've uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, Kies, etc, used back ports vs front port... I think it has to do with the MTP file transfer protocol now used. Here's what works for me with the Note2 and the PC:
Connect phone to PC... phone's "USB PC Connection" box opens and you have 2 options: MTP(media/files) or PTP (camera). If PC doesn't immediately recognize device, I do one of two things which always works:
1. toggle between MTP and PTP a few times... if that doesn't work,
2. unplug usb from PC port and reinsert (either same port or another)
Windows Explorer will then recognize device and add "SAMSUNG-SGH-I317" under "My Computer" and list it under "Other" devices in panel.
I had this same problem today on my new N2. Drivers would not install. All I wanted to do was to drag my pics and music onto my SD card. I worked around this of course by removing the SD card from the Note and putting it in the adapter and doing it that way. I still haven't gotten my drivers to install. I may just get the drivers off the Internet
+1, my ONLY complaint about this phone.
I gave up trying to find a fix after installing/un-installing/re-installing drivers/kies/odin3 about a bazillion times and only getting it to work a random few times.

Thanks, Should've mentioned that I've tried all of the above methods. It may be that, since I work on so many Android devices, my pc is just too full of incompatible drivers and I've yet to clear them properly. Even If i did I'm fairly certain that I'll be working on more devices and will screw it up all over again. My network is pretty quick and Dropbox/esFile Explorer is convenient so I really shouldn't complain.

[Q] Anyone having issues mounting their tablet MTP

Is anyone having issues mounting their tablet via USB. If I check off Camera (PTP) I get access to my photos in my Windows Explorer, but when I check off Media (MTP) windows acts like it doesn't exist. You have some old driver that is blocking access.
Use device manager to remove the device and driver then reboot and try again using the Google drivers.

Yes. It is fairly typical. I had same issue on Windows 7 x64 and lived with it for a while.
Finally, I decided to fix it by uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling. It took about an hour after trying all sorts of tricks. There are tricks in quite a few threads here on xda. I'm not sure any one thread fixes every problem. So I found the solution was trial and error.
After messing with driver for a couple hours, serious waste of time, I got MTP working once. As a confirmation check I uninstalled the drivers once more and let the drivers reinstall on plugging in the device. It broke again, back to PTP. LOL
Not giving up, I tried again the next day and finally got MTP working again. This time I uninstalled drivers again, and the correct drivers reinstalled on device plug in. Since then everything has been great. I get both MTP and PTP working great.
I would try sfhub thread ideas and search around for a couple other ideas too. It will eventually work, but you have to isolate what exactly is the problem on your Windows 8 PC. Sometimes you are missing just one thing, sometimes Windows automatically messes with you.
Good luck.
I have no issues with Win7x64. Worked first time and every time since. Sorry...

One of my nexus 7s doesnt show up on pc?

So, i have a nexus 7 FHD, its rooted with slim rom and it works great. My sister just got a nexus 7, and i rooted it for her with a toolkit, and updated to the latest OTA. The problem is, her tablet is now showing up as a MTP device on my pc, while my nexus 7 is. I know its not the wire because ive tried both my wire and hers with my nexus, and they both have my tablet show up. Furthermore, i see it as a device under the device manager, and my pc makes a sound when it plugs in, but i still cant do anything.
Does anybody know what to do?
Fix the driver that pops up when her tablet is plugged in, don't let windows search for the drive install it manually. A quick search will point you to the correct one. Also best not to use toolkits, if you did this manually my guess is you would have installed all the proper drivers but that's besides the point
