[Q] Stripped down SGH-T989 as MP3 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'm hoping someone can help out.
I picked up a used SGH-T989D (Telus, not T-Mobile) and I'm looking for a ROM that is done up so it can be used strictly as an MP3 player. I've seen plenty of posts about people since I've started working on this but nothing about any particular ROM to look at. Ideally, all radio would be turned off or removed except wireless.
At the moment I have the phone rooted with SuperLite 4.1.2 and running WinAmp to test with. I'm getting a constant problem with the system intermittently locking up for 2-3 seconds. When music is playing all audio stops during that time. Running apps only shows gapps and gservices running.
Does anyone know of a stripped down T989 ROM with battery and audio optimizations?

How about just popping the phone on airplane mode

The problem with Airplane mode is you have manually go into the settings to allow the wireless to come up. Rebooting causes that the wireless to become disabled again. I know minor. The phone isn't going to be used as a phone anymore so I would prefer to have the radio turned off permanently.

i believe that the wifi functionality of the phone is connected with the mobile radio.

You're correct, after flashing with a light-weight rom I'm able to turn on flightmode with wifi still running.

I've actually been having a similar issue recently; WiFi would be working then all of a sudden it would stop and I would have to disable and re-enable to get it working again.
It seems to have start happening after I changed my WiFi AP but other devices (PCs, laptops) are fine. I've not investigated it too much though.

So your sleep policy is set to never? What ROM/radio do you use?
I noticed this on my phone as well. I think, for me anyway, it might be down to using setcpu and underclocking my phone to slowly when screen is off, then again, I may be talking utter rubbish!
Any fix for this yet? So annoying and my only gripe with the phone

Hi,
I have a similar issue on my HTC Desire GSM on which one I have installed cyanogenmod 7.2.
The sleeping policy is set to "Never" and unfortunately, the downloads stop when the phone goes in standby mode.
(I notice this beahaviour especially with the Listen google app, that I use to manage podcasts).
I need to switch off the wifi and re-enable it, annoying!
Any idea? fix? Thanks for your help!

data hanging

Hi,
Does anyone have this problem on their phone? Every now and then, when I am doing a data related function, data hangs as though it is not connected even though I am in a perfect 4g coverage area and the 4g sysmbol is still on. I know its hanging because the arrow to the right of the 4g symbol stays lit green. It either starts working 5 minutes later on its own or I turn wifi on and off. I have the newest sim card installed.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
probably a software related issue
the only time i experience that is when i lose connectivity with the network, as in the signal bars or 3G/4G arrows are all greyed
Yea dude i noticed even tho i have wifi set to never it always shuts off or i should say loses connection i hate it because i have to pull down status bar hit it off then on wifi is definitely effed on stock too. Anyone else experiencing this? I know its a problem cuz my g2x i could leave it alobe for an hour in hibernate come back and wifi still good to go anyone have any ideas? Or is it a s2 problem witg wifi cutting off. Like i said the icon will still be there but i wont have connection and 50% of the time i have wifi icon and 4g
Same issue here, in two different phones I've had. Not sure what the issue is. In fact, opening this page, my data was hanging for a minute, irony.

for this issue you can configure how WiFi behaves, but the settings are only accessible via spareparts or custom ROMs

But this happens to me when my wifi is off. Only on the cellar data connection.
I had this issue after giving juice defender superuser permissions. It seemed that it would not turn data back on when I had the screen on. I'm not sure if this applies to you, but I no longer gave juice defender su and everything was fine. a lot of those functions in that app do not seem to play nicely with this phone yet anyway.

It happens to me several times a day. Usually right after a voice call. I just put on flight mode for a second, switch it off and data is back. I have no idea what's causing this. Always on 4g, wifi is working perfectly.

+1 to everything already mentioned.
I was in Vegas this weekend and had HORRIBLY slow/no data at all. Like has been mentioned, the green arrow with just stay lit. thought i was the rom, i nandroided back to stock, same issue. Hope this is fixed soon it is hella annoying.
This fixed it for me
I have had this same issue for a while, here's how to fix it. Go to Titanium backup, I found out that there're two versions of "My account" on the list, so I frozed the old one, then go to task manager "kill all", the 4G icon will disappear. Open up "My account" again, the 4G reappears but as soon as I close the app, the 4G icon would disappear.
Hope it helps someone
I too have similar problems where my data hangs or doesnt want to connect. Then a few minutes later, it will decide to start working. This happens even in full signal regions. Stock rom and/or BeastMod rom...
Not sure why it happens :S
For those having problems and have tmobile my account on phone freeze it or uninstall it i guarantee it fixes your data problems trust me. I to had problems just like you guys and i was told to uninstall my account i was like what? What the hell is that going to do but believe me when i say it worked! I actually unfroze it to see if the problem would come back (4g and wifi on at same time) or cutting out. And it did. So i refroze my account and bam 4g disapeared while wifi on. This has fixed all my wifi and data problem phone works flawless now! Basically i think t-mobile trying to snoop with our data. Scumbags
This is happening to me. The phone is driving me mad. It happens constantly. The "up arrow" in the 4g icon will light up, and all data will freeze. I stare at loading screens all day long. It freezes anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Then it will fix itself, then it will happen again within 2-5 minutes. I'm furious with this phone.
Wifi works great. It's not dependent on my location, it happens no matter where I am. Doesn't matter what I do, nothing prevents it from happening. Of course, the Airplane mode toggle or resetting APNs and all that will do the trick to fix it temporarily, but it will only happen again 5 minutes later.
I'm on stock, unrooted. I am ready to throw this phone at the wall. Has anybody else managed to actually fix it or get a response from Samsung/T-Mobile?
I should have read this thread before buying this phone. This is so annoying. I tried to put the phone in flight mode. It fixed for a min and back to problem.
I'm having the same problem. I didn't have this problem until I updated to 2.3.6. Anyone else still on an earlier version?

Same things been happening to me lately, its awfully annoying. Makes me want to throw my phone across the room sometimes.

[Q] how to have bluetooth while in airplane mode?

there was a way in the long long ago but can't find anything for JB era
reason? on vacation and don't want charges to enable airplane mode - but i don't use wired headphones (i always break the cable and end up with sound in one ear only) so need to have bluetooth but keep the data/voice disabled.
would also save on the battery a little to have data etc disabled (yes i know bluetooth uses up battery but would use more if the modem was enabled as well).
i think the note 2 would (after a test today) last me a full day of location tracking and music via bluetooth but would like to disable data etc anyway.
anyone have any ideas?
Airplane mode is to be used inside the airplane and that's it - no radio whatsoever will work, including BT
The easiest way to have what you want is to remove the SIM from the phone!
But if you want to make/receive calls but avoid DATA usage, then there is a setting:
"Settings>More settings>Mobile networks>Data roaming (uncheck it)
I hope it helps you!

cheers but i don't want to make/receive calls either. if i'm on holiday then quite frankly i don't want to be contactable. that, and the fact i'd rather save as much battery juice too.
is there a way to disable the radio/modem entirely but let bluetooth function normally?
my roaming isn't checked anyway. not needed in UK
Just turn on airplane mode. That will turn off everything wifi, bt, etc. Then turn bt back on while in airplane mode

it didn't work on my desire or my sgs2. trust me, i tried. afaik only CM roms (which i've never used) allowed it.
but, it works. yay!

Bluetooth not turning off

Hi guys
I've been getting fairly decent battery life, however am now connecting my phone to the car daily via bluetooth.
I've noticed some battery drain and after checking the built in battery stats and also better battery stats app, my Bluetooth is not turning off when I'm selecting it.
IE, connected on the drive to work, get to work, disconnected then turned off, but showing as constantly on.
Any ideas what could cause this?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
I have noticed the same thing when viewing battery stats although I never use bluetooth and it's always off.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Any updates or anyone else having the same problem?
I also noticed it just a minute ago. gsam monitor tells that bt was on for 6hrs+ which is the exact same time with phone radio.
Earlier this week connected to my boss' car radio for bt aux, this is the first and last time I used bt. Switched it on&off from settings, nothing changed.
SH26CW, running 4.0.4
Might be useful to give the serial no's since it is useful information about the production site and date.

Same issue here, and same Android version. GSam always reports the same Bluetooth on time as the time unplugged, ie. it's saying that BT has been on all the time, while it's clearly off. I've tried different ways to switch off BT (using widget, using settings, going into Airplane mode and back) but to no avail.
Part of me is suspecting that GSam might be reading the wrong value and falsely reporting it as Bluetooth. But perhaps someone with a different battery monitoring app could check on this and confirm?
It is a bug, to solve it you will need to restart your phone.
This is the only way I find to solve this on stock 2.17/Android 4.0.4.
This bug is caused by turning your Bluetooth on and off.

Hmm, user fault then hheheheueh
the strange thing is, it does not consume battery at all. ok it's not connected to any device but I would think it would consume more than just %1.
may be non-discoverable makes it use less. not broadcasting anything.

I'm now having a chat with HTC live support about JB update and also asked the question about BT off issue.
He said, please follow the following steps.. Waiting for what he'll say..
So he suggested booting in safe mode, going to applications? >> manage, uncheck.. ? I'm not familiar with safe mode so I cannot surely say what he is talking about.
Has anyone tried this? Did it work?
So he sad that this will solve if an application is triggering the problem, but I haven't used any applications that use BT.
So, the next suggestion is factory reset, bullsh*t. sorry guys =)
useless post may be, but confirms that HTC official support has no fixing for this.

Hahaha, that's funny and more towards Apple ideology.
Bluetooth was designed to be efficient. But, if its running then it consuming energy ,and that's something I don't like.
I already checked logcat/kmsg ,but nothing about this Bluetooth issue.
I didn't see anyone on JB came to complain about this, let's see what the offical JB has to offer.

Try to disable "fastboot", and give it a try.
I am afraid nothings more can be done on stock, other option is to wait for JB and hope it already fixed.

Safe mode is a mode in Android, that will will disable all the 3rd party installed apps. Similar to safe mode in Windows. After your turned on your phone, just press on the volume key and it will get you there.
Beside that, I never trust customer support, and I never had a good experience with any of them.
The only good thing is about companies offering customer support, is they add job opportunities into the economy.
This problem just crept up on me. I noticed the battery was lower than normal, I checked BBS and it seems like BT never turned off. A reset would solve the problem until I turn BT back on again.
Does anyone know if this has been fixed with 4.1?

It probably doesn't really start properly since data was off. Maybe try to rebooting your phone to see if it will do it then.
Are you manually turning it off and on? You could try an app that automates it so that when you get a message and the screen lights up (assuming you have that setting enabled) it turns on and see if that helps. Though I have found that using such apps will sometimes cause your data to not reenable and require either toggling manually, toggling airplane mode, or rebooting.

Yes I am using the toggle in the shade. I will give the app a shot but my guess would be failure since the network seems to need to be on when the message comes in rather than an automated toggle after the fact

If you enable screen on for notifications it may have data back on before the download actually starts. It may not work. But I have used screen off profiles before and not had issues with MMS other than the occasional failure to reenable. Do you turn WiFi and GPS off? It may be enough to allow for leaving data on.

That's because NJ sucks balls.... Try going to settings, applications and force stop the messaging app. Then open messages and try downloading again. If for some reason that doesn't work, a reboot should.
Try this:
Be sure that you have good connection and you might want to force quit messages if this continues.
