[Q] Possible to install 4.4 Custom Rom on 4.3 OTA? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Would it be possible to install a KitKat Custom Rom on an S3 running 4.3 OTA (unrooted)? Or will it trip KNOX? I don't care if it will void my warranty, it's pretty much expired.

Just flashed CM11 everything's fine

Here is a modified version of the 20131121 ROM that installs on devices with the new Knox bootloader. Also, this version boots with SELinux back in permissive mode.

Upgrading to 4.3 without triggering the KNOX void warranty

Hi,
I'm using a rooted N7100 with a stock rom (4.1). Is there any way to upgrade to 4.3 without voiding the warranty?
thanks!

you can simply flash the leaked stock 4.3 version via odin, It wont void your warranty.

Do not install official 4.3 unless you wont plan to use any custom rom or downgrade to an earlier version of android!
You'll have knox active on 4.3

Rollback from 4.3 to 4.12 or Earlier Stock ROM

Now that 4.3 stock ROM is out, has anyone developed a method to roll back to previous JB stock ROM's?
From what I read, once you update the bootloader, you cannot go back. But surely one of our great developers has/will come up with a method.
Thanks

Would like to know when this comes out too. From what I know it hasn't been done yet. I'm constantly advised to flash a 4.3 ROM if I want to go back to stock but the current 4.3 ROM is way too buggy.

You can flash any rom you like as long as it does not contain a BOOTLOADER for further clarification look here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48211488&postcount=3

Thanks. So is the "not able to rollback" only related to the bootloader itself? And after upgrading to 4.3 with MJB bootloader, we can return to 4.12 as long as we don 't flash a 4.12 ROM with a bootloader?
Sorry for the questions, but for some reason my brain and the whole bootloader deal is a no-go

Can anybody confirm that if we are on 4.3 stock, and install CWM and non-stock ROM (CM, PA, etc.), will the warranty check flag change to 0x1 in download mode? Or will it remain at 0x0?

It will trip the flag if you flash a recovery. If you're worried about it tripping, don't flash anything. Mine tripped rooting stock with CF-Root. Not a big deal though, only two months left on the contract.

You are correct!! no bootloader and your good to go!!
So...what does flashing the MJB bootloader provide that the MJ2 bootloader doesn't provide?

From what I have read wifi won't work without it.
I tried
I flash a 4.2.2 stock rom after OTA updating to 4.3 with a mobile odin. But the baseband and imei became unknown after I boot the phone. So I have to flash back to 4.3 again....LOL
I was able to flash to UCMG2 stock after what I will dub my 4.3 OTA fiasco lol I flashed it in TWRP using the download from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2388065
I did not need to flash any other item as everything appears to be functioning well.

Just checking my fact are correct, please verify

Tell me if any of this is wrong:
Right now root will trip knox and can only be done on 4.3 or below?
The kitkat update prevents root and is currently unavailable in the US.
CWM & TRWP is available for this tablet.
Flashing this tablet is very similar to flash a SG3. ( Not something I've heard about just trying to compare)
Flashing any rom other than a version of the official Samsung rom will result in the lost functionality of the S Pen

1. Root will trip knox regardless your version whether it is 4.4 or 4.3.
2. Kitkat is now available for US. http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=SM-P600&pcode=XAR#firmware
3. Yes
4. yes
5. Just if you flash an AOSP or AOKP rom, which is not available till now, other than that any custom rom available now will give you all spen functionality.
2. KitKat is rootable as well. Flash CF-Autoroot, Custom Recovery and then flash SuperSU.zip with recovery.

I've been seeing people go back and forth. Are you rooted on +4.4?
I don't want to just assume any rom other than AOSP or AOKP will have it. I tried looking around at the limited roms that are available and none seem to mention if they do or do not offer S Pen functionality. Do you know of a specific kitkat rom that does?

Yes. The only thing that is different from 4.3 is that you have to update your SuperSu app by flashing it through custom recovery or update it through play store.

Do not assume, read the ROM description. Any ROM based on Samsung firmware has S pen, multiwindow. There are at least 2 such ROMs in development section.
FYI The Verizon version isn't rootable... AFAIK

if you flash any custom recovery it'll knox it up, also on any custom kernel
probably when you'd flash a aosp rom without a custom kernel it can work (but most likely the system will crash)
Probably if there are any touch-wiz based roms with odin, and without a custom kernel (or with removing it from the tar) you could stay safe
but after all i'm not liable if you knox your device up
i've knoxed it up by the way running cm11 with custom kernel from F4K and get up to 21333 in antutu :highfive:
Wooow, antutu is very hight! Awesome performance
Question: knox put up in any kernel mod? If it's thats right i prefer lost my warranty

You can download stock firmware from www.sammobile.com
enter download mode
put the file into PDA or AP in odin
press start
wait until the phone restarted
then you have stock again!
/edit:
you'll probably need to enter the recovery after flashing it and do a "factory reset"

1, It's preferable to flash the same original firmware version.
2. Most Samsung apps won't work, watchon works

[Q] advice on KitKat rom

Can anyone recommend a rom that is not custom which allows me to have have the official OTA kitkat update on my at&t s3. Please tell me where I would find it and if it is stable.
At this time, there is no official KitKat update for the s3. The custom kk ROMS here are ports from other devices
Do you have an i747m or i747? What bootloader is currently on your phone?

Boot into download mode and let us know what it says on the screen. The version of your bootloader will greatly influence the manner in which you restore a stock ROM on your phone.

Not at all. It just means that you do not have the 4.3 bootloader on your phone and you do not have Knox installed. Do you have any warranty left on your phone?
Installing the 4.3 OTA update will automatically install Knox and the 4.3 bootloader. The 4.3 bootloader can make it difficult to recover from a soft-bricked status.
If you want to have the OTA KK update, I recommend you flash a stock 4.1.1 ATT ROM, unlock your phone using the free method, and upgrade your phone using ATT's OTA upgrader.
If I were you, I would not load any stock ATT ROM beyond 4.1.1. Once my phone was unlocked, I would install a custom recovery and install a custom AOSP ROM such as GZ's Validus.

Thank you sooo much for your recommendation
To check your bootloader download "Terminal Emulator".
Open app, type "su" and give root rights
Close app with the " X"
Open app again
Then type "su" without the quotation marks
Then type "getprop ro.bootloader" again without the quotation marks
Look at the first line and see what it reads???
As you can see in my screenshot where it read I337UCUAMDB shows I have the MDB bootloader on my ATT S4. Yours should read something like I747xxxxxxx which will be what bootloader you have on your phone

Which is the best kitkat based rom, Gz's vladius or Cyanogenmod version C11 or is there an even better one?
I prefer Validus because it is based on aosp and I love the dark theme.
All ROMs are in the development section
As mentioned Official has not been released yet so there will be no stock KK
Please research all other choices there to find what is BEST for you
