so, I loaded CM 10.2.0-RC1 on top of CM10.1.3 and I tried it with a dirty flash and that didn't go so well. I did load GAPPS 4.3 as well and every Google app just crashed and when I connected to Play Store it would error every time I tried to download updates.
So then I tried it with a wipe of data and cache and no more app crashes and the Store worked fine but none of my previously installed apps restored to the phone. Is that a common experience or did I miss a step?
Forgot to use titanium backup to save them. Or it could be that you went ot fast when you installed and forgot to check the restore applicaiton setting first time you booted. AFAIK you're screwed.
So, after a clean flash, there are 2 ways of getting back the apps you had before...
1) Flash CM AND gapps before you boot for the first time. Make sure you use the right gapps. There is a chart here. The right one for CM 10.2 is gapps 20130813. Once booted, check to restore apps and settings right after you enter your google account info. This will start the lengthy process to install your apps. This will not restore your app data, only your apps.
2) better way IMHO: Do above, but uncheck restore apps and data. Use Titanium backup to restore your apps and data.
TIP: If you don't already have a Titanium backup of all your apps, flash back to your original ROM, install Titanium Backup Pro, and do a backup to your SD card. It is also advised to update all your apps via the market before doing the titanium backup on your original ROM. Hope this helps.
I just went from 10.0.0 to 10.2. I found that the 11/27 nightly worked better for me than RC1. PM me if you have any more questions.

Restore using backup pro ... i face couple of apps crashes issue.
My Backup Pro works fine across ALL ROMS with Data restore.
U can restore them via Android Commander, too.
i use titanium backup always worked fine for me
Both Titanium and MyBackup aren't working for me. Marketlinks are always bugged.
just tried the following ... i think its the safest
- after fresh rom install
- go to appsbrain and login goggle acct
- syn with your apps brain acct and perform all installs/updates
- reset phone .. clean rom with latest apps.
G'day everyone, have been trying to find answers to my myriad newbie questions and have found this forum to be relatively noob-friendly, so bear with me whilst I pour them out!
Ok, so I've got a HTC Desire (GSM), unlocked and unbranded, running 2.2 with the baseband 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27. I've been keen to get into the Custom ROM world, so I recently rooted the device using Unrevoked 3 without any issues. I then installed Titanium Backup to get familiar with it, then ROM Manager after discovering that it would take a lot of the hassle out of flashing ROMS.
I used TB to do batch backup of 'all user apps + system data'. I then used RM to flash the latest ClockWork Recovery, then do a NANDroid backup of the current ROM (Stock Sense).
Then, I used RM to download CyanogenMod 7.0.3 and selected GApps also. I specified to wipe data and cache, then went ahead with flashing the new ROM.
The ROM flashed without issue and when it started I was asked for my Google account details, which I entered, then once I had enabled my wifi details, I downloaded all the Google apps.
Then I installed TB again and performed a 'Restore all apps with data'.
It was at this point I realised that my Contacts had not been restored, I only had a few from my SIM card showing. I thought that if I rebooted the device then the 600 other contacts would appear. I rebooted and then the device got stuck at the CyanogenMod splash screen for approx 20 mins. I rebooted into Recovery and reflashed my original stock ROM (making sure to clear data and cache) and was relieved to have the phone back the way it was. Once back in Sense, I exported all my Contacts to the SD card, for easier importing later.
I then tried to reflash CM7 again but was wary that the root cause of the earlier splash loop could've been either GApps or what I restored from TB. So I selected GApps to flash again, but this time at the startup screen giving you the option of which GApps to install, I selected none. I then attempted to download the ones I wanted from the Market. This worked ok but strangely Maps wouldn't download. I then went into TB and ran 'Restore missing apps + data', then 'Restore all system data' where I de-selected all the red items that appeared to be Sense-specific.
This gave a relatively ok setup, but when I rebooted to test its stability, it got caught in an indefinite splash screen loop again!
1. Can anyone point out where I'm going wrong?
2. Why didn't my contacts restore with TB?
3. What is the best backup and restore procedure to use with TB when switching between Sense and CM7?
4. What is the best method to use to install GApps?
Thanks in advance!
Did you do a full wipe in recovery before flashing the new rom - i.e. erase data/factory reset, erase cache, wipe battery stats?
Also I think restoring a "sense" Ti backup to a non sense rom is giving you the problem.
You have a nandroid of your original sense rom, right?
I think now it would work to do full wipe, restore your nandroid - and take care to backup your apps and data to your google account when going through the registration process. This should restore contacts, sms etc. later. Do Ti backup of user apps ONLY, and delete the previous Ti backup data from your sd card e.g. using root explorer.
OK, now full wipe again, reflash new rom and register - take care to leave checked both "backup" and "restore" from google account while registering. Now wait - most stuff should restore in 5-10 minutes from google servers. If not, reboot. If still not, restore user apps only via Ti backup.
I hope that works! As for gapps, not sure but isn't that another zip to flash? If so, you should do it after flashing the rom and rebooting at least once after running it.
Good luck!
No need to reflash Gapps.zip. It's included in the 7.0.3 stable release. (I know, I just flashed it last week) The prior releases required an additional flashing.
Agree with above poster. Always wipe those caches before re-flashing. Sometimes you can get away without doing it if going from 1 version ROM to another, but is best to wipe.
Also a good idea to flash update your recovery before flashing a new version ROM. Or at least on occasion.
EDIT: I use My Phone Explorer to Sync my contacts, calendar, sms, etc with Outlook. Or you can sync it with phone explorer's own app.
Thanks for the detailed responses guys.
I managed to fix it by downloading the latest zip files for CM7 and Gapps directly from the Cyanogen site and doing a manual install from ClockworkMod. Looks like ROM Installer probably wasn't getting compatible files. Oh and yes, I was always clearing the data and cache before each flash.
So, now I'm working through the incredible depths of CM, I'm sure more questions will be coming!
Hi folks... I'm fairly new to flashing ROM's (i know how to flash them and such) but I have a question about backups and restores of roms....I have searched and just dont see the exact wording im looking for.
Ok, So, I have clockwork, and rom manager and have done a backup of my rom.
Here is my question that isnt quite so clear to me.
When I flash a new rom, or say update one that I have where you have to wipe everything.... are these backups here to restore all of your programs and such to where you dont have to go back in and re-download everything when you have a new fresh rom installed.
Id love to try out a bunch of roms.. but I just hate having to go and re-download all of my programs each time I put a new one on... if that is how it has to be then so be it...
I just dont really know exactly what the backups im doing are for, or what they do.
Thanks for your help.

Somewhat. A nandroid backup is a COMPLETE backup of your entire phone at the point you make the backup. All your apps, calls, texts, etc will be exactly like you made the backup. That's the beauty of nandroid backups, you can make one, try a new rom, and if you dont like it, restore your backup and there is no hassle re-installing apps and changing settings.
However, when you install a new rom, you have to wipe everything. So when flashing a new rom, you will not have anything, you will have to re-install your programs.
There are backup programs that will allow you to backup before a wipe and flash when installing a new ROM. You can then restore the user apps and data. You can also restore SOME system data but you have to be careful and it may be a trial and error process when restoring.
I use Titanium Backup. Some people also use MyBackup Root. I found that when I restored some of my apps with MyBackup they would Force Close when I tried to run them after a restore. That has not been the case with Titanium.
I have Titanium set to restore the apps to the original location. That way my apps restore to internal (DATA) or the the SD Card depending on where they were originally installed.
My process when I flash a new ROM:
- Backup all user apps + Data and System Data with Titanium.
- Nandroid Backup using Amon_RA
- Wipe System, Data, Dalvik and Cache
- Flash the ROM
- Reboot
- Create google account, etc.
- Install Titanium from the market.
- Restore user apps + data using titanium
You can also restore some system data. Depending on the ROM (and how different it was from the original) that can cause problems. If that happens go back to wipe and reflash the ROM again without restoring the system data.
I have had no problems restoring things like my SMS Messages and Call Logs. You can get into problems when you start restoring things like system settings or HTC Sense settings, etc.
Thank you both for the replies. This is exactly what i needed to know. I hope this thread helps others with similar questions.
There is one thing. CWM and ROM Manager have a history of not being reliable with backups.
Your best bet is to get Amon Ra and use that to make Nandroids.
4 I always have on my phone are my Stock/Rooted, my last ROM I was on, fully setup, my Current ROM, basic, before I restore and programs or apps/data, and my current ROM all setup.
If I flash a new ROM, I can just delete my older complete setup.
Hi,
After rooting and trying some ROM's out i wanted to go back to an 'old' ROM from which I had a nandroid backup. It went smooth the first time but the second time I got a error saying that Google services framework stopped working.
Only the stock app worked and none of my other installed apps did.
I couldn't even open the settings menu nor could i open Titanium backup.
I then reflashed the ROM and manually copied some TB backup folders but lost all other data.
Someone has an idea about this?

I'm using Amon_RA atm.
Still no fix?...
try re-flashing recovery and then do the restore again. If you don't know how check the guide in my link.
I've seen some other people with this problem, but whats with the Play Store not automatic restoring apps?
This cost me so much time today after quickly trying out CM10 which is naked with barely any features only to come back to CNA, and both times with wipe/factory reset, my apps would not restore automatically, i would have to go to the list of purchased/downloaded on play store and individually install each one...?!
thankfully I had a fairly recent titanium backup, but im wondering if this broke my market links with these apps??
anybody else having this problem?

Did you not create a full backup before flashing a completely new ROM?

What play store restoring apps?
Restore from Titanium Backup, it takes around 10-20 minutes..
As a good practice, i restore only free apps, i redownload paid apps from play store.
I have had a lot of trouble with the official Google Backup/Restore and custom ROMs. And this is across four different devices I've owned since they implemented that feature. Stock it always works fine after a data wipe, but when flashing a custom ROM it never recognizes it.
That said, recently it did start working for me on CM10. It did not work going from stock -> CM10, but it worked doing a clean install from one nightly to the next.

As mach3.2 mentioned, it's probably wise using something like titanium backup to backup and restore apps when switching from one ROM to another as they tend to only work on rooted devices for a reason.

I did have a titanium backup, luckily. Usually what I do is restore all play store apps first, then use titanium to restore the apps not downloaded from play store.therefore I minimally use titanium backup, and never restore system says incase of incompatibility..
But what I'm pointing out is that for the first time since trying out CM10 and then reverting back to CNA, both times my play store apps would not automatically restore like usual...? Maybe it's a problem with the latest play store version?? (3.9.16)

Whether or not you auto restore depends on the gapps package you install. It's not due to the current play store version, but rather because the package you used doesn't support it.

Thanks, this makes complete sense because the only thing that changed was the gapps package.
I thought Google backed up the apps though? so how does it work that the gapps package backs up apps?
If I switch back to the previous gapps version will my apps auto restore?
I switched to the new gapps version because it has new gmail version etc
This is why I don't install GAPPs from a ZIP file - I get them from the Play Store so they always auto-restore...Just make sure you have the Play Store apk on your phone of course!
Figured out that the CM10 gapps packages, seem not to auto restore apps with Google play.
But no problem with CNA or AOKP gapps packages. - they restore my play downloaded apps right away
