I'm sort of stabbing in the dark here, but my issue is this: When I open my received text messages, the peoples contacts that I have sync'ed with facebook should show their photo. This is how it worked when I first got my phone.
I have done a few factory resets since then, and yesterday loaded a new rom. I loaded my contacts that I had backed up to SD card.
For some strange reason ALL of my contacts have hiphens ( - ) in their phone numbers. I think this is causing some texts to not be delivered.
Also, when in the messages window, all of my contacts photos wont be displayed. But if I go to the people directory they are displayed fine.
Now, is there a way I can delete the cache or similar without factory resetting the rom?
I have rom manager, and I used this to reboot into recovery before loading a new rom. In there was options for deleting cache and things (to be honest I didn't know which was the correct one so I did them all before loading a new rom). Now when I go into rom manager it just loads a sign like this a!
so I cannot try that again.
Thanks for any help given!!
Why did you back up to memory card if they're going to be saved to the cloud via your Google account?
Otherwise I have no answer for your question.

I had all sorts of problems with the facebook integration.
The magor one I had was that the phone would automatically use the facebook phone number and not the one in the phone which was very annoying when people put fake numbers in their facebook profile or don't update for their new number and also all the numbers had a +44 on them which meant my phone wouldn't dial them at all!
My advice is remove your facebook account and see what happens. The try adding it again. If the problems persist then keep it removed. Life will be easier without your phone and facebook contacts being merged and updated all the time... trust me!

Thanks for your replies.
Regarding the backing up of contacts, does anyone recommend a GOOD FREE app for backing them up? I simply do not wish to use Google to back up my contacts. They are personal, and I would prefer to keep them on the phone. Google contacts is pointless to me.
If you would like Google contacts I have no say but I would rather not have my contacts spread out all over the place, with different versions etc...
It's going to take me forever to edit everyones phone number, and each time I flash a ROM I'll need to do it again..
Worst still, since flashing PaYs ROM the Google sync actually worked for the very first time since receiving the phone - So, now Google contacts has all of my contacts but the phone numbers have dashes is ( - ) which is wrong. Like the person above me, us in the UK have issues when dialing strange numbers!
Google contacts is fine, means you never have to worry about them being backed up as it's automatic...otherwise you've gotta sync them with yur email client on your PC which is hassle...I was a stickler for backing up to Outlook but now use Google...
The dashes come up after restoring contacts from the SD card...don't know why it does it but it can't be removed (another reason not to back up to sd card)
while in the htc people app, just press menu button then you can export your contacts to your sd card, which you can then later on import again.

You asked for a way to back up your contacts without syncing them with google contacts, I provided you with a way to save them without having to use any app.
(it's the dutch flag, just made the World cup soccer finale)

Fair play, but it is this way of backing up contacts that is giving us the problems as per post #1 and this discussion
I have done a few factory resets since then, and yesterday loaded a new rom. I loaded my contacts that I had backed up to SD card.

sorry my bad, i'll let you guys get back at it
Try contact2sim
Limitation of course is the small sim memory for numbers only.
Astro file manager has some backup capabilities. HTC sync....

Hello All,
I have a Sprint EVO 4G that my job supplied to me and I need to turn it back into them very soon.
My question is pretty simple - how can I back up all of the data on it now and save it so I can pull the data later (contacts, past emails, messages, etc...) then perform a full wipe that will leave only the stock ROM there. I have the stock ROM on it still - no incrementing data, just want to make sure I do not leave ANY tracks behind when I give it back.
Thanks in advance...I am a complete noob and since this is going to happen sooner than later I want to be prepared to give it back and not worry.

Well if you are synced with gogle it will automatically save Contacts, calendar dates, and emails if I'm not mistaken. Anything else I would recommend getting Lookout Mobile and backing up what you need and get it from their website
Well, your contacts should be synced with your google account already. However, if you have non-google contacts (like from Exchange) then you can try something like this: https://market.android.com/details?id=no.uia.android.backupcontacts&feature=search_result
This should help with backing up SMS: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result
As far as emails, that one's tougher. Maybe you could just forward those emails to your gmail.
There are all-in-one apps like https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lookout&feature=search_result
and https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wsandroid&feature=search_result
However, I don't know whether there will be any issues with trying to restore that backed up data to a different device.
Thanks guys - going to work on it this weekend.
Ok, so I think I've done something exceptionally stupid.
I updated to 2.3.3 from the HTC developer web site.
Battery life seems good, but it's difficult to tell because I've got a 3500mAh battery.
All seemed good, and I re-installed all apps, and re-synced my contacts (all ok), and I put back all my texts, etc., using SMS Backup+ (all ok). Memory wasn't fantastic, but I had switched off facebook sync and twitter sync for contacts quickly, and thought it was ok. Then All People had LOADS of contacts - when I looked they were Google+ ones. Turned off sync for Google+ and Gmail, went in to Gmail and stopped those Google+ contacts forming part of my Gmail contacts (I think). I couldn't be bothered to delete them - there are hundreds - and even when I tried to delete a few, it didn't give an error message, but would not delete any of the contacts.
This morning, woke up, and all my contacts, phone included are gone.
This update is becoming a nightmare.
So, I have bootloader 1.02.0001, and that is now included in revolutionary and I understand if I am to go anywhere it'll probably be forward to Cyanogen. But someone else said because of the boot version I couldn't
Simple question. Ok, two.
1. Can I somehow now go back to the previous stock HTC Desire rom? (I'm assuming not).
2. Can I go forward with "revolutionary" and the rooting bits, and Cyanogen 7.1.0 ?
Has anyone gone this same route?
(ps. If I've committed the ultimate sin - apart from loading the 2.3.3 rom - and put this in the wrong thread please let me know or ask the mod to move it.

Thanks for that. I've got my old iPhone 3G if all goes wrong, and only 2 months left on this contract, so......

Let us know how you get on. I'd just got up the nerve to root my desire then discovered that having gone to 2.3 makes it more complicated and I bottled it.
All I really want is more app space but think this is the only route to that.

agree with Coempi's reply. revolutionary is pretty straightforward.
however, reading this again, when you say all contacts are gone, including all your google contacts? you shouldnt lose any whatever happens to the phone if they're synced to google. that's rather worrying if that's the case.
I've always found contact management much easier through gmail in a browser. Also a bit of manual sorting works, like groups or "only show contacts with phone numbers" within people.

having gone 2.3 doesn't make it more complicated. just make sure you do plenty of reading.
read through all of the revolutionary wiki for a start, several times
you can get plenty of app space

I've been reading for weeks and just when I think I'm ready some other step pops up. For example where does http://htcdev.com/bootloader fit in to the scheme of things?

hah not to worry i read for ages before attempting it, you're much less likely to go wrong this way!
ignore that method, it's the official way, but has it's limitations i believe.
just go with revolutionary (and keep reading ).
Well, it's been rooted (revolutionary).
And I used ROM Manager to put Cyanogenmod 7.1 on. (with Google Apps).
I'm setting it up now. I can't post links yet but if you put Youtube.com on the front of this /watch?v=kvg0i8in96M you'll see the video.
Then I put Cyanogenmod using this one /watch?v=JzjWZ-OsLZ4
Remember to turn fastboot off (in Applications on 2.3.3) on turn debugging on under Development.
It really is quite straightforward.

You can, all he needs is to flash the downgrader and have a goldcard ready, then use the 2.2 WWE RUU.
If it doesn't work the first time it should the second.
This is my first post but have been reading this forums since S1 and LG p970. Thank you to all this comunity for all.
This is the first time i dont find the issue in the forums so i write.
My wife has a N7100 just the same as mine, same stock Rom and she doesnt have any wierd apps or nothing.
She has been losing all her contacts. And we restore them from Gmail and they sync ok, and some day again she has no contacts in her phone and in gmail.
I tried different things as erasing the accounts and putting them and still lose contacts. Then I reseted the phone to factory (and a fight you know why, people doesnt like to start from scratch to install apps) and after restoring from backup contacts in gmail and synced with phone, she has all contacts. Then one time she doesnt again has any contacts in phone or gmail, nothing!.
Any ideas? She is getting mad at me XD
Plz anyone??
Hello, I have a stock z1 compact and in the last 2 months every time I try to access the contacts or make a call the phone or contact app crashes making it a nightmare to make calls.
I have cleaned the cash, reinstated the full phone to factory, nothing works, anyone has a solution for this? Or an idea on why this happens? Is it the sync on LinkedIn and Facebook contacts?
Thanks for the support
Anyone?
No idea, never heard of it.
In any case, try to reset again and only sync google contacts, leave LinkedIn and Facebook away. If it still works, add either Facebook or LinkedIn and check again. If it still works add the third one and you might know the reason.
I there thanks for the idea I tried it yesterday actually and keeps doing the same thing I think I might go for a rom instead of stock. Can I do this having a branded phone?
You can do that, but I still wonder why it happens.
What exactly happens? Do you get the option to submit the data to google?
Which release are you currently running on the phone?
It just appears the damn error message of a app crash saying that the contacts application crashed and asking to close it.I am the latest version. Thanks for your help
Probably it's some contact which has some weird letter/symbol in his address. Maybe you could check all your contacts in gmail, if you synchronize it. But yeah, no idea why this is really happening.
Hehe damn computers! Well Thanks nevertheless for caring very much appreciated
