Hi,
Maybe you noticed that the sound volume on Xperia M isn't too satisfactory. Maybe, like me, you tried to raise the volume with AlsaMixer, but the issue is that the settings are temporary and you have to set the volumes everytime you want to listen some music...
So there's how you raise the volume on this phone. I tested only on the dual-SIM version, please confirm if this is working on single-SIM version, too.
1. Make sure your phone is rooted and you have a capable root file explorer (I used FX File explorer with the root plugin).
2. Navigate to /etc/snd_soc_msm and make sure that the /system partition is mounted as r/w.
3. Open snd_soc_msm_Sitar in a text editor (FX File Manager has one embeded)
4. Search for "Headphones" (including quotes). You should find something like in this image:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
5. Edit the 'HPHL Volume' and 'HPHR Volume' values, from the "EnableSequence" section. For a 100% volume you shoud have something like
Code:
'HPHL Volume':1:100
'HPHR Volume':1:100
6. Save the file and reboot.
Warning: at 100% the sound is very loud and I guess you need a good pair of headphones to avoid distorsions. Play whit those values to get an optimal volume for your preferences.
This tutorial is provided as it is, I don't assume any responsability if you brick your phone during this process.
So is this only for headphones volume or does it also improve volume of loudspeaker?
The "Headphones" section changes - obviously - only the volume in headphones. For changing the volume of loudspeaker I guess that you have to change the values on "Speaker", but on my phone those are already set to 100% (but, as I said, I'm not sure that "Speaker" is the right device for this).
The volume for this phone is already one of the best. and headphones too r loud. Not the best but definitely loud. Still good knowledge

Thanks for the great guide mate!
Works great on xperia M single sim with latest offical firmware update
Got any ide if you can change the bass curve on the sound?
//Dan
You could install Viper4Android FX which comes with a system-wide equalizer. This way you can change the sound parameters even if your favourite music player doesn't come with an equalizer.
The in call volume is too loud on the minimum level :s
No more quiet conversations. :/

Does dual have similar thingy?

Any idea how to increase bluetooth streaming media volume? I always have to increase the volume on my car a lot to hear the bluetooth music stream
Thanks. Finaly I can use my MH1 (used to be too quiet).
You can change also lines with RX2 and RX3 Digital volume. I don't know, what it does exactly, but volume is also higher.

HOWTO
It´s saver to edit the build.prop on the computer, as the lines are shorter on the phone. So that`s how to do it:
1. With a root explorer(I prefer ES file explorer), copy /system/build.prop to the root of the internal sdcard (/mnt/sdcard).
2. Connect phone to computer and copy the file on your computer.
3. With Notepad++, open build.prop and edit it. Be careful as some of the parameters already exist. Just change their values.
4. Save and copy the file back to your phone's root.
5. Overwrite /system/build.prop with the edited file.
6. Make sure that the permissions are still rw-r--r--:

Just put the line at the end of the file. The most tweaks aren't already in build.prop.
I forgot two:
persist.sys.purgeable.assets=1
Allows system to free up more RAM when needed.
debug.sf.nobootanimation=1
Disables bootanimation for faster boot.
These two are for testing, don't know if they work:
ro.mot.hw.HAC=1
ro.telephony.sms_segment_size=160 ->longer SMS? I read of something like that, may doesn't work in all countries.
First of all,
Thanks for sharing
Second,
just a suggestion, update the first post and put all of the newly added tweaks there in one place.
Thanks again
This is great, but the instructions on editting the build.prop are a little unclear, are we copy and pasting the tweaks from the OP into the file, or do we locate the appropriate lines in the build.prop and then change the values to match the tweak.
I'd like to be able to apply better 3g speeds and better signal but it's a little unclear.
Pictures, or thorough instructions would be appreciated.
no need of a computer, i can do it in the phone itself, can't I?
Not sure if half of these make any difference, but I have added a couple to my phone. Some are not applicable to our device for sure.
For the 3g tweaks, my research (google) seems to indicate that for the sgs,
gprs class should be 12
hsdpa category should be 8
hsupa category should be 6
I don't know if these even work though, i can't tell any difference.
One that i do find very useful for ICS, is one that enables MTP (most roms/kernels don't seem to have this option).
persist.sys.usb.config=mtp
Hope that is useful for someone, MTP rocks

Some of the parameters like supplicant.scan.intervall are already there in build.prop. Then you just change the value. If there isn't a parameter in your
build.prop, you can copy&paste it from the OP.

You can do it on the phone, but it's not as save as on the computer. i.e. if you're at the end of a line with a root explorer and press the space bar to get to the next line, you aren't really in the next line and could get bootloop by rebooting. So I wrote how to do it on the computer.

Yes, the tweaks are only slightly noticable, and not all needed. But I'll add MTP to the list tomorrow for sure.
This is great. Good job
thanks!
there's no point in editing your build.prop if you cannot figure out how to do it after you've read the OP.
next thing they'll ask author of OP to create a custom build.prop for the users that "aren't sure" how to do it.
Just please, learn to use notepad
PS. And if a line doesn't exist in your build.prop, add it!
first of all thanks ..
i have 2 question:
1. i can apply more than 10 tweaks at once?!
2. do i need space(enter) between every tweak?! or no need?!

The mod you posted works with a rooted phone. I have used your mod in the past and noticed a significant improvement in sound. Later I have been using non-rooted phone and was unable to get the Viper4droid function.
The choice I have made is to use Jetaudio with AM3D activated... It is not the best but provides better base and tones. The good thing is you can modulate both jet audio settings and AM3D and this helped in improving the output too...

How do you revert back after the first sound mod? How do you revert LPA back after disabling? Have you noticed any difference in battery life? LPA is supposed to really increase battery life, so I'm reluctant to disable or change anything without the option to revert back, I know you can take a nandroid but that's time consuming, are there easier ways? Thanks!
Keep in mind the step 1 zip you are using is only for cloudy ROM.
While it may work with other firmware it is actually overwriting the intended settings provided by the firmware. For example CyanogenMod and omni have wildly different values in mixer_paths.xml than the one you provided.
If you want a zip that will do pretty much the same thing as step 1 see my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701745
Seems that there is a little bit background noise after ViPER Clarity is enabled and set to 10.0dB ?
It's quite serious actually.
BTW, what is the purpose of changing the values of mixer_paths.xml? ( just curious to know @@ )

The values changed in the mixer_paths.xml mod I posted are specifically to boost the volume output of the headphones and prevent a volume level change when switching between music and phone call etc.
There are other things that can be done using mixer_paths.xml like the bass reducer for the speaker which solves some distortion issues. You can also adjust the speaker volume, the call volume, and many other things.
I'm not 100% sure the of what changes the cloudy zip from the op makes. It's a premade firmware specific file, and probably shouldn't be flashed on a firmware that isn't cloudy. But I can tell you that the mod I posted actually gives you louder sound output then the cloudy one, and it's universal to all KitKat firmware.

Couldn't tell you. I'm not using viper, and I'm on CyanogenMod.
I recommend you try to clean flash your firmware (which will undo the mixer mod) and then try the mixer mod from my thread without viper and see how it sounds. If you need the viper mod after that you can add it, but at least you won't be using the wrong mixer file (my mod just changes YOUR mixer file rather than replacing it)

Noozxoid EIZO-rewire is much better than Viper. IMHO
Why is it that when I extracted the mixer_paths.xml file from the zip and replaced it with my original mixer_paths.xml i got bootloop?

i m nt able to do as said as i m unable to find the same line...i m posting the ss of my xml file..
Yes the the sound will be more loud but definitely NOT more clear. As you increase the volume the distortion increase also. Problem is at quality of the speaker itself and maybe at the final stage of audio amplifier.

can any one provide DSP manager for stock rom???
Good .. it Works.
Thanks OP, here is results for me on Sound Meter. changes for 83 -> 96 in xml.
To be precise .. you only have to modify line no. 28 & 722 on Mokee ( though its appearing 4 times )
Code:
[email protected]:/system/etc # grep -inr "RX4 Digital Volume" *.xml
mixer_paths.xml:28: <ctl name="RX4 Digital Volume" value="83" />
mixer_paths.xml:722: <ctl name="RX4 Digital Volume" value="83" />
mixer_paths.xml:863: <ctl name="RX4 Digital Volume" value="82" />
mixer_paths.xml:894: <ctl name="RX4 Digital Volume" value="90" />
On Stock Mokee
After modding mixer_paths.xml to 96
may not look in decibel (few points ) but mind it that 10decibel hike is Double amplification.
how about?
Code:
<path name="voice-speaker">
<path name="speaker" />
<ctl name="RX4 Digital Volume" value="82" />
</path>
what does this do when changing the value?

I assume you mean " You are unable to find mixer_paths.xml"
- First tell us your ROM ( are you on MIUI, CM11 or Mokee for example )
- Then if you have rooted your phone or not
- If you have root explorer app or not.
I didn't find such file like that..

- MaxxAudio and still many more inside
How to install :
- Remove all soundmod that already installed on your system before install my mod
- Download Hana Audio Engine and go to recovery, after that flash this zip
- And try to hear the different from Hana Audio Engine
After installing this soundmod, you can try to play some song to test. Not need to access soundenhancement again, but if you want it you still can access it .
How to access sony soundenhancement
- Go to settings and select apps and click 3 dot buttons
- Choose show system and search audioFX (or maybe you can try to disable this app)
- Search Open by default and choose Clear Defaults option.
- After that you can try to set it with cm music app, and go to equalizer settings with 3 dot buttons and select sony soundenhancement .
How to access Snapdragon Audio+ for video :
- Go to stock gallery app and try to play some video
- Plug in your headset to your phone and try to click 3 dot buttons
- Choose Audio Effects and and you can configure Snapdragon Audio+ in this part
(NOTE: try to disable this effects after you play video, because this will wake conflicts with Hana Audio)
For uninstallation this mod :
- Wipe your system and re-flash back your system with any additional zip in recovery mode
(if you have it and my mod will completely uninstalled)
I'm not make any uninstaller for this mod

You're welcome , I'm still working on this mod and already solve some problem. But maybe this update will delay until my laptop is back from service center.
Sorry :crying:
Sent from my Sony Xperia M using XDA Labs
New update is released !
New Update is already released with new audio enhancement and new 96Khz audio freq (Experimental).
In this update i'm still enable DSEE-HX feature to make sound quality is good, but this make we can't use Sony Music app.
If someone want to use Sony Music App, then try to use root explorer and go to /system and choose file build.prop.
hold up for a second until new option is pop up, choose open in text editor and find this string.
"ro.somc.dseehx.supported=true" and change it too "ro.somc.dseehx.supported=false"
save and reboot your phone, then we can use Sony Music app again.
In this update i'm re-new sound engine and include 2 new engine , that you can switch it in terminal.
1. Hana Illusion Audio Enhancement (Stock Audio Effects) [AIE]
This audio engine will give you a sound quality with great balance for rock and pop music, include low background effects and great bass sound.
2. Hana Illusion Bass Audio Enhancement [AIBE]
This audio engine based on Hana Illusion, but this is not included low background effects, but have clear voice with great bass sound. This audio engine only support for rock music.
3. Hana Bass Audio Enhancement [HBAE]
This audio engine is based from old engine that have powerful bass and little background effects, my little brother design this effect. This audio engine only for rock and some pop music.
How to switch audio engine
- Download or install terminal emulator app from Playstore
- and type this command
su
cd /system/Hana-audio
sh hana.sh
- you can choose what audio engine that you'll switch it
- and reboot after it
Download available in OP Thread
Other configuration
How to change to 96Khz :
- Download or install terminal emulator app from Playstore
- and type this command
su
cd /system/Hana-audio
sh freq.sh
- you can choose what freq that you'll switch it
- and reboot after it
[NOTE : switch to 96Khz will give higher sound quality, but this will need a lot of cpu process too during sound processing.]
How to enable or disable 6 Audio Channel :
- Download or install terminal emulator app from Playstore
- and type this command
su
cd /system/Hana-audio
sh LFE.sh
- you can choose what channel that you'll switch it
- and reboot after it
[NOTE: Stock already enabled 6 [LFE] channel, if you try to disable it then channel will switch to 3 [LFE] channel.

Requirements
A rooted Moto g5 phone - I have tested this on Lineageos but I will assume it will work on a rooted stock rom too
Arise Sound System Thread
Arise Sound System Download
Instructions
Download the Arise Sound System
Flash it in TWRP
Aroma installer will start
Follow the Instructions of the Installer
SELinux Must be set to permissive - either use the installer to permanently set this to permissive or you can manually set it to permissive from within the Viper4android app
You only need to install Viper4android - However you are free to install any sound mods you like but I have not tested them
Next you need to disable any equaliser apps you currently have running
In lineageos turn off AudioFX from within the app
Make sure you disable any equalisers that are part of the music app you use as some 3rd party apps come with them so look in the apps settings and switch it off
Swipe right and select settings
Enable developer mode
Select Disable SELinux
Select ok
Note if you restart your phone you will have to set SELinux to permissive again for it to work unless you have set it to be permanently permissive
Open your audio player app settings and goto the equaliser section
See if there is an option to change from the apps equaliser to system equaliser
Eg for pi music player
Go to the app settings and change use pi equaliser to system equaliser
You will know its working if you open up Viper4android app
Swipe right
Select driver status
If the following shows it's working
NEON Enabled: Yes
Enabled: Yes
Status: Normal
Audio Format: Supported
Processing: Yes (when music is playing) No (When nothing is playing or not set for system equaliser or AudioFX is on)
Feel free to play around with the settings of Viper4android - after all everyone's headphones are different

Hello FixItMan,
earlier we exchanged in another thread on sound volume. Does this implementation give a sustainable implementation for increasing sound volume v.v. the program editing you suggested before? I certainly want to try and thanks already for input and work on this subject.

I didn't try the other app
Yes this improves the volume and is sustainable (albeit you may have have to disable SELinux again after restart)
Use the playback gain control to increase volume further than what I have in the provided profile
Gives total control over audio like bass frequency reverb stereo surround etc see screenshot for the app in first post

You need to copy the lib file to system/lib and set the correct permissions for the file as per instructions
Failure to do this correctly will result in that message
Edit
See screen shot section for how permissions of lib file should look
OK I will try it. Thanks :good:

Try copying it and setting permissions with total commander
Iv found with some other root browsers the settings don't stick as the app doesn't have the ability to mount the folder r/W or you didn't mount the lib folder r/w
Total commander mounts it for you and prompts you to remount the folder
Sorry missed out a step
To find the disable selinux setting
Open viper4android app
Swipe right
Select settings
Select enable developer mode
Now disable selinux will show
Iv added this step to first post in case you were wondering where that option is
Failure to disable selinux means audio driver will have status abnormal
Yeeeeee V4A now finally work... Thanks a lots guys. But... I used it on my Xperia Z2 and the effects it's very different! That's better than nothing

Yes it works with poweramp
Go into poweramp settings
Select audio
Advance tweaks
Disable direct volume control
This then turns off poweramps equaliser and let's the system take over
All apps settings in different music player will be different but all have the same premises - you're aiming to turn off the apps equaliser (just turning off isn't good enough as the app is still in control) and giving access back to the system
Here's a screenshot of that settings menu in poweramp
i disabled direct volume and eq, but no effects, the viper4android say no at processed and i tried to complet eliminate audio effects and no result

it works - i just tested it
also make sure in the poweramp equalizer screen select tone and volume (has dials for mono stereo x volume)
unselect equ tone and limit
also make sure if running for example lineageos that you have also turned off audiofx from the audiofx app
make sure you have disabled selinux
i have all of this modifications, but i am on stock rom rooted, i have selinux disabled, not works

All I can say is - iv just tested it on my moto g5 running lineage os and it works
Try pi music player instead using the guide on the first post and see if that works - if it does theres a setting somewhere you are missing in poweramp or you have another equaliser that needs to be switched off - maybe a stock dsp equaliser - have a look in the phones settings menu under audio and see if it has the option to select a dsp/equaliser - if it does select it and select viper4android as your dsp/equaliser
i am wondering if works only with music player or all sounds in the phone, like ringing, call auditions...
i didnt have any equ, only audio effects which is disabled now
woozie.2007 said:

it works with all sounds - as long as the phones settings are set to use viper4android as its dsp/equaliser
The only problem you might experience is sometimes it takes 1 or 2secs for the effects to kick in for the first time - there for if you get a notification for the first time the start of that notification may sound low volume and suddenly rise up to the level its meant to be
This should only happen the first time the driver kicks in
thanks for your time, but i tried everything, i read first post for 20 times, i folowed all, still nothing, not works, i dont know what can i try
