I really want to root my phone because I don't like touchwiz at all. However, I recently dropped my One S in a pool and I'm scared of doing that to my S3. Can I use my tmobile full warranty if I mess up my phone? If not, are there any good warranties that cover rooted phones?
This is my first post so I don't know if I'm doing it right.
Thanks in advance guys.
Warranty is toast, you better going to a launcher like apex, nova, go launcher, it replaces your stock theme with sense, iphone (icrap) miui, asop, basically almost anything

You could use it if you flash back to stock or if you mess it up so bad it wont turn back on

how do the people at t-mo verify that its rooted? does it like go into their system or something?
If its damaged enough that it won't turn on, how will they find out? If it does turn on, then Odin back to stock, how will they find out?

yeah, im wondering if they can tell if its rooted in their system. do you know how they tell if its rooted?
If its damaged enough to need replacing, but you feel as though it may still be in good enough shape for them to find out, maybe it needs to meet a harsher fate. Like being introduced to your car tire.

very interesting idea... do you think it will actually work?
Juat root. If you need to replace it you can flash a stock odin..
Also idk that they check for that.. I sent a gs2 back rooted with no problem

lmfao that's funny..
dude just root and flash away.. if u need to return it just odin back to stock and use triangle away to reset your flash counter to 0, done.
I highly doubt that they will not warranty you. All you have to say is your phone is acting up and you've tried everything. Like resetting the phone and etc... Eventually they will send you out a replacement phone. Just make sure you revert back to stock. Oh and unroot it if possible.

I know people always say "your warranty is now void" when rooting but I've never had that actually be the case. I've had 2-3 rooted phones replaced on the spot in T-Mobile stores due to hardware defects. I even told one rep it was rooted and he still replaced it then and there. My Nexus One was rooted and I had it replaced by Assurion after breaking the screen and paying my $100 deductible.
And like others said, worst case you can just flash it back to stock via Odin.
I say root it. But I will warn you, you will get completely addicted to flashing new ROMs. I promise.
How does T-Mobile find out? T-Mobile isn't the provider of your insurance, Asurion is. How does Asurion find out? They don't, Sammy does. Odin counter unless you reset it after a stock flash and root. I've said too much.

I returned my old Samsung Vibrant for a hardware defect about a year back (it was rooted), they never found out. Then again, I did ODIN back to stock just to be safe.
Basically, if its working enough for them to find out, then you can probably flash it back to stock yourself. If it isn't, well hell, they probably aren't going to bother finding out what's wrong with it...
And from what i've heard, they really don't even check these phones out. They just replace whatever is wrong with them, and flash it back to stock themselves.
I had to do a 14 day exchange to get this one. I just flashed a stock Rom.
Triangle away works now: resets the flash counter.
Flash away

I returned a HTC Sensation that was rooted. It was DOA and wouldn't turn on. Warranty sent me a new one and a box for the old one. Never heard from them so they probably just recycled it.
I had to replace my last phone (vibrant) twice under the 7.99 warranty due to small hardware failures (no gps lock on stock, accelerometer broke), and both times I just ODIN'd back to stock and sent it back. Never had an issue.
I did test after going back to stock that the issue still happened, just to confirm it wasn't root or a custom rom-only.
Frankly getting tired of people asking if it's ok to commit insurance fraud to root their phone.
People like that cost us all money in the long run

Blah blah blah... I'd bet money that if you hard brick your phone by accident, or find other hardware defects, you'll be going straight to the T-Mobile store. No matter what you say on the internet.

First of all, if I find Hardware defects, that is not insurance fraud so maybe you want to rethink your statement. And going to the T-Mobile store to return under warranty for a hardware defect is not filing an insurance claim.
Secondly, if I brick my phone on accident, that's my dumb fault. Which btw, I have never done, ever. And I've been rooting/flashing for years.
That's my point. Don't come to xda looking to start rooting/flashing and not know what you're doing just because you have insurance fraud as a 'safety net' for idiocy.
People who promote that kind of crap are just as bad as the people who actually do it.
I need to send my phone back to Samsung because they have a 1 year manufacturer warranty per Sprint. If I send them back a Stock but rooted phone will they notice/care? The repair is hardware related not software. I need to get half of the small little hooks that are compressed when the battery is inserted. My only though is they may want to wipe battery stats and when they go into Recovery and notice it's TWRP they might get pissy. Thoughts & experiences? Thanks.

I took mine to sprint fully rooted and on a custom ROM, because my LCD was fried.. They didn't care at all. I wouldn't worry about unrooting it and crap. Just send that bad boy in.

My initial thoughts are as follows:
Samsung bootloaders are unlocked by default and they have indicated that they will not lock them in the future. So I'd think they're more likely to forgive rooting when it comes to their 1-year warranty.
According to Samsung's warranty page, as long as the defects you have are in no way caused by custom ROMs or the rooting process, they should cover the repair. Unfortunately, they have the final say in what caused the damage to the phone and could say that the custom kernel fried whatever part is malfunctioning. I seriously doubt that they'd do that, but it all depends on which service person you get and how good/bad their Monday has been. I'd say it'd be best to triangle-away the flash counter and to restore the stock recovery/rom. As always, qbking77 has a great video on how to unroot, so check it out.
I dont know. Samsung would probably be more "aware" of your phones root state compared to sprint. If its something simple like bad USB port, or burnt pixels, I doubt they would care. If your phones O.S. is jacked or you hard brick your phone, likely they will notice. You can avoid these problems if you install triangle away and have it automatically clear your bootloader every time you boot your device.
Remember,
You are taking a risk when you root your phone. Sometimes you will get a service rep who doesn't know anything about rooting and/or could care less....sometimes you will get an XDA Member service rep pissed you are raising their premium, it all depends.
Thanks everyone for your responses! Awesome I'm glad Samsung is open minded with this matter. Yes there is no way my hardware issue is ROM/Software related so I'm hoping they won't care. I'm still going to flash the stock MB1 ROM and use the paid SuperUser app to hide the icon in the app drawer before sending it out just in case. Thanks everyone!

Maybe Samsung didn't fixed it at all and they forgot their XDA password...
I just recently got a Note 3 which i use on Metro PCS. I haven't had any Samsung system updates so I'm still on the stock 4.3.3 rom. I noticed every now and then, I'll get a notification about an app being blocked so i figured I'd check if it's Knox or the annoying security scanner that came with the phone
so i clicked on Knox and got a screen with Knox saying to install 200mb. Since it doesn't seem to be installed...Can I root this phone without tripping the warranty counter?

And can someone explain to me what this is and how I can stop it from annoying me
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda app-developers app
Knox is on your phone. It's probably additional files needed to run it, but you have knox and as such you have the warranty void counter. You can root de la vega and keep your knox warranty or cf auto root if you don't care. I would stay away from kingo based on what I've read on this forum.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Is there an advantage to rooting with something besides the root de Vega that would trip knox. I would like to root to a lighter ROM that gives me longer battery usage cause this guy can't squeeze out more than 4 and half hour of screen time.
Also any news on a Samsung update to the camera, it sucks at low light conditions

If you plan on flashing rooms you might as well use cf auto root since a custom recovery or room will trip your knox counter anyway. As for your battery life, something seems a bit wrong. I use mine quite heavily and I cam easily get a day from it.
Haven't heard anything about a camera update as of yet.

But you use a Customized ROM that lowers battery drainage yes? Or do you have some features that you turn off?
What is cf auto root?
I'm on stock rooted only. Cf auto root is a file designed by chainfire to root the note 3 among other devices. Google it. You need the files for hltetmo.

So Cf installs a rooted stock ROM that doesn't trigger Knox? I'm guessing the lte thing you mentioned only works for rooted devices? And that it will work on Metro, my phone is not unlocked bur obviously works flawlessly on Tmobile.
Any non root hotspot app that works?

LOL how are you guys okay with losing your samsung warranties. I paid 665 for my phone so I am paranoid. Do y'all have another coverage that you use? If so I need some recommendations.
So if I don't want to trip KNOX there is only one root option?

Here's my current thought process on the warranty matter:
I literally just got my note 3 a few hours ago, but already the bloat is making me scathingly angry. So my choices are....root (vega) and do nothing, say screw it and do whatever I want and lose warranty, or....do nothing.
I'm trying to picture scenarios in my head where I would have to use my warranty (I also have Jump!). I can't think of any short of: my charger port stops working, or I bust the screen. But at that point, I'd probably just run over it with my car, pay the insurance deductible and get a new one. I'm not thrilled at the prospect of paying that deductible, but I'm currently less thrilled about putting up with Bloatwiz.
I haven't taken the plunge yet, but if you can think of other good reasons not to go ahead and trip knox and enjoy the beautiful bloat-free ROMs they have here, please let me know.

So this my question where I cant find a clear answer to. If I flash custom roms it trips the KNOX counter and lose warranty right. Does that mean I cant get a new note 3 from my tmobile insurance? I mean if I can flash roms but I am still able to get a new note 3 through my insurance then its a no brainer for me, which warranty is if you have phone defects and software issues which im sure custom roms can fix all that. But I just want to know if flashing custom roms voids the insurance through my t-mobile? cause I wouldnt mind paying the deductible

sometimes they just put insurance since its a new phone. But most of the time they ask you if you want insurance, its an option. You can pay 10 bucks more a month for the insurance if not you don't have to but wont have insurance. If you just got the phone I sugget you call customer service(611) and ask if he put insurance if not ask them to put the insurance on the acct.

Yeah thats how much it usually is 70 bucks. But if you haven't payed the phone off completely you pay like 20 bucks a month till the phone is payed off or have the option to turn in you're phone for a newer one like the s5 when it comes out, that's like the whole reason for the JUMP. But yeah the phone is worth it, it will be more worth it if I can find out flashing a custom rom won't affect my insurance plan on my acct.

To answer your question there Edo, some of as such as myself are microelectronics gurus, and tinkerers, so were most likely going to take our phone apart anyway so Warranty=POOF, some of us also own devices that we either bought or bartered for on craigslist, so to be honest, some of them may not be what you would call "legally aquired" and i dont necessarily mean that any one of us stole the device, what i mean is it could be stolen and we may have bought it that way, (i honestly cant say i support that, but i cant turn away a good deal sometimes)**I KNOW ITS WRONG PLEASE DONT HATE ME** and others such as myself, bought a device like my Tmobile note 3 that was blacklisted for non payment because whoever owned it previously didnt pay the bill, but has no clue on how to unlock/root/rom a phone and have it currently unlocked on Straight Talk with AT&T sim, usually if its blacklisted with AT&T, it will still work on their towers, you just cant call AT&T and add it to your account, you can only put your sim in, 9 times out of 10 when its blacklisted from T-Mobile, you cant use it on their network wether its simple mobile, solavei or any tmobile tower using service, because the device will be declined for registration on their network. However for AT&T its nice to know a friend that can unblacklist phones
but ya, most of us dont care about warranty, but there are a great deal of us here that do at the same time
Alright, so one of my buddies that works at T-Mobile, he Claims that as long as your phone is on Stock (Or looks like Stock) you should be able to turn your phone in for a Replacement or towards a different phone with Jump.
Obviously the phone I will be attempting to trade in has its Knox_Warranty flag at 0x1
I am going to try this tomorrow with one of my S4's that I unrooted today and back to 4.3 Stock. Anyone that has been curious on Replacement or upgrading with Jump etc, I should find out tomorrow hopefully. Wish me luck.
I will post results when I get back!

I have a friend who works at a store, I asked him if they are told to look for anything (customization, etc) or even check the bootloader.
He said the only thing they are told to look for is water damage, other than that they don't care. All they do when you Jump is send the phone back and i'm assuming TM just erases everything and resets the device before sending it out as a refurb one.
Just upgraded my phone, no problems, you're good to go

I mean I don't know the specifics, i'm sure if you actually asked T-Mobile if it voids the warranty they would say yes, all i'm saying is if you take the phone to use the Jump program they don't even look at the bootloader, most of those guys don't even know how to get into Download Mode let alone check it.
I would say No I don't think you would have a problem, but you never know, the decision is up to you.

To confirm what you said earlier, what T Mobile is doing is taking your used phone and doing a complete factory refurb on it. That means a total wipe of the entire memory and a clean now install, as well as replacing worn out body panels like a cracked glass or scratched up plastic peices, etc.
Doing this the way a factory refurb does it that will wipe out Knox and flash counters and custom ROMs and all that jazz. They have equipment that will do what Odin can't. So they don't care.
If you do get a T Mobile store rep who does check the bootloader and makes a big deal out of the Knox flag, just take your phone to another T Mobile store. Or come back to that one the next day and talk to someone else. 9 out of 10 store clerks are not phone nerds like us. They are people with minimal phone training just working a retail sales job. If you get get the 1 phone nerd, another store will have 4 guys who don't even know what a bootloader is.
Once T Mobile takes the phone from you and processes the exchange, they cannot come back later and claim that it doesn't qualify. If they did you can just say you have no idea what they are talking about and their rep inspected prior to the exchange so something must have happened after it left your possession.

Thanks. I asked in here because two T-Mobile Reps told me if the warranty is void on the phone, then they cannot honor the jump program. And seeing as they are accepting knox tripped devices for the jump program, it seems like knox does not void your warranty.. which makes me like Samsung even more (and T-Mobile)
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Food for thought. As a part of the "T-Mobile My Account" app is a device health (beta) page that will scan the phone for various settings. If you tap on either the "Battery state" or "Device performance" and look for a box that says "Show all test" being rooted is among the list. When I read over the various warranties and agreements, I was looking specifically for anything about root, rooting, rooted, "" access. The best I found only mentions that issues caused by 3rd party software are not covered.
Seeing this makes me wonder if T-Mobile as part of its "un-carrier" move may be opening up to the idea.

Cause on an HTC or nexus device you can completely go back to stock and have no evidence of rooting. With Knox, you're screwed. There's no resetting it. I don't know how LG works, this is my first LG device

Just out of curiosity, what is T-Mobile's stance? I'm very new to TMo. So new, I switched/ordered my phone on Tuesday and due to a "Systems Issue" I don't even believe my phone has been shipped yet.

Honestly, if you return to stock (completely) and then go in for warranty, you should be okay. The official stance is no, but I know that 99 times out of 100 you're not gonna have an issue. Unless it's blatantly obvious that you caused your issue by messing with your phone. If you ever need anything when dealing with Tmobile feel free to pm me on here. That goes for anyone who reads this.

Returned my g2 yesterday, wiped it but left it stock rooted with twrp recovery. She didn't say anything about it.

Yup, and things like this happen where reps are completely oblivious. It's not uncommon.
I only said what I did because I know quite a few managers from the bay area to Sacramento, and a good portion of them are into rooting phones and train their staff (not cause they want to screw you over, just to make sure that they retain their job) to look for it.
So yeah, you'll probably be fine if you don't unroot your phone, but an extra 10 minutes of work won't hurt you.

I usually get my best results by going into the store and being a real jerk, swear at the counter people, call them names then tell them you rooted the phone and now there are some issues....
JK,,, dont do that.
If you are nice and act dumb they will help you.
Hmm, I don't even HAVE a store around here, I'd be dealing with whoever is at the other end of the shipping tag.

thats very nice of you to offer that:good:
I agree with your comments; I have rooted every phone I have had over the years with ATT/Sprint/TMO, and NEVER "restored to stock" ANY of the phones I turned in for upgrade/repair/etc, and never once had an issue with ANY carrier.
If you act like a jerk, and hassle the store personnel, you will always have a problem; if you are polite, professional, and dont try to blame someone else for your problem, 99% of the time, you wont have a problem turning in a rooted phone.
Treat people like YOU want to be treated, and you will always be taken care of; at least that's always been my experience..
I have always just unrooted before I went in. Some times I have watched them check the phone and worried if they would try to update it. That was the case with both my HTC Evo 4g and Samsung Galaxy S3 with Sprint. I was trying to avoid the hboot 1.5 and KNOX updates. Only issue I had was when my mms stopped working. Even unrooted the stock messenger wouldn't send them. I was asked if it was rooted and was hoping the unroot file worked. Ever time the phones have finished as I was parking in the lot so I never really had a chance to make sure it was all back to stock.
When I picked up the G3 and changed to T-Mobile I asked and was told unroot it. If no one knows it was rooted then you're good.

yeah, its so easy to unroot a phone, and if they do a quick check to see if its rooted, and they dont see that it is, they never go any further..

I have had to over the years exchange a few phones with t-mobile, been with them going on 8 years with 5 lines. I always unroot and set back to stock with that said tho, I had to exchange a note 3 for non working GPS and although I did set it back to stock I obviously couldn't reset the knox counter. So far, haven't heard anything about it and that was almost a month ago. While I have no official comment, I do believe t-mobile doesn't care so long as the issue is not related to anything you have done.
I want the g3, but am waiting for root. Just don't care for phones I can't restore to, uninstall unneeded apps etc.
i went on store at LG G3 launch and i showed my note 3 to swap with G3. via JUMP
my phone is rooted, i even teased the girl representative that i have the coolest ROM on it lol. she just smiled and check the note 3 physically. i even let her do a factory reset on the note 3. few mins later i have the black G3 on my possession
I'm not sure what the big deal is. If we can flash a stock ROM onto a phone I'm sure they can, probably easier than we can. It's the hardware condition that really matters.

This is called The Golden Rule and XDA and the world in general would be a better place if it was practiced at every opportunity. ?
