How do I ensure I DON'T GET kitkat? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I got the notification that the kitkat update was downloaded but after reading there is no flash support I have absolutely no interest in installibg this update. I got a nexus 7 over an iPad solely because I could use flash which is the only game in town on many sites I visit regularly. I got rid of the notification by unchecking notifications in the framework app but I'm worried if my tablet reboots/powers off that I will forced to update before it starts up. Please tell me this is not the case? Also is there a way to delete the download period, even if it's not installed I'd rather it not eating up limited memory that I have.

Dolphin use their own engine, if flash does not work on KitKat install dolphin jetpack and choose that as your rendering engine in dolphin settings

Not from what I've read, read on this site an official statement from dolphin saying flash wasn't supported on 4.4. Besides I find that dolphin's flash support is not always the best, i like having a few browsers because I find certain browsers handle certain sites flash better. My biggest concern is if I power the device off will I be forced to update since my nexus 7 has already downloaded but not installed the update. Im perfectly fine with 4.3 except the touch issues when the n7 is not plugged in or in my hands....grounding issue I believe?

The one way that I know of how to stop an OTA update first requires that you be rooted. If so you can use an app called Autostarts. Open the app go to Menu click on "Group by application." Scroll down to "Google Services Framework" and click on that. At the top you will see 4 "After Startup" entries. Click on the third "After Startup" entry from the top. In the popup window you should see "SystemUpdateService$Receiver" in the description, that's the one you want to disable. To delete the update I'm not 100% positive but I'm thinking if you delete the cache from Google Services Framework that will delete the update. Or Settings/Storage and click on "Cached data." Honestly, those are guesses because it's been a longtime since I've had to do that! SD Maid Pro will delete the update also but that app also requires root. After flashing the 4.4 factory image when it first came out I went back to 4.3 until I find a replacement for the AOSP Browser, damn it google!
Edit: Decided three weeks ago to give Dolphin another try, installed on my N5 with a hacked version of the flash player and it's working great! Used the factory image to flash 4.4.2 on the N7 and installed Dolphin Browser which now has the Jetpack built-in and it works well! Dolphin Browser with hacked flash player.

I guess I misread the changelog

I'm still not clear as to whether I can power the device off safely without itnforcing me upgrade. I'd really hat to brick my n7 by losing flash support. Also where exactly is the update located so I could possible erase it?

It's the zip file in /cache. It will reappear though. Rename /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip. And then don't go into the updates screen again, it will trigger the download which is several hundred megabytes once more. You need to be rooted.

I used the method posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249350
You need to have root access, but it's worked for me so far.

Indeed, just installed this and after a reboot, the prompt has gone away and it tells me the system is up to date. Thanks. And another demonstration that people don't come here simply to get hold of custom roms!

Thanks for all the answers but nobody has yet to give a straight forward answer as to whether I will be forced to update if I reboot my n7. Sometimes I'm forced to reboot when I have a hang up and I'd hate to think when that day comes I'm going to be forced to update to kitkat. I'm also not rooted and would like to stay that way. I know to many of you it seems quite easy but everything I've read makes it seem very daunting and confusing. Kernels, bootloaders, Roms, flashing....its a lot more than I thought it would be when I went android.

I have rebooted many times while the update notification was present and never had the upgrade automatically applied.
I haven't rebooted into recovery though so I cannot say if what I said holds if you do that.
For me, I'd just add an empty line to /system/build.prop
It is an empty line so it is assured not to change any behavior and every OTA update will try and patch build.prop at which point it does a SHA1 checksum compare, finds your current build.prop has been modified, and stops the OTA before it even starts modifying a single file.
This assures you that if by accident you select the OTA to install, it won't actually do anything.
You can do similar things with other files, I just chose build.prop as an easy example.

If you take your time and read instructions carefully its very easy to root a Nexus 7. Either way, why don't you just reboot it and see if it goes to 4.4 and then do a factory reset. That should bring you back to your out of box jelly bean. Of course you'd lose your data but you can back that all up.

Hello, I did that ^^^^^^^^^^ using autostarts and checked it several times to be sure I had it correct.
All seemed good, except today an update from VZW went through on me and I didn't want it to. I looked in the cache dir and nothing was in there, yet the phone kept saying it wanted to install the update. I kept telling it not right now, but after awhile it had a mind of it's own and installed/updated anyhow. My VZW GS4 went from MJ7 to MK2 not even sure what changes it made, I'm still on JB 4.3 and I don't want KitKat 4.4
I don't understand how the update came through and where it was d/l to, I checked yet again and the "SystemUpdateService$Receiver" is disabled, exactly as shown in your pics. The broke my Root, but I still showed custom when it re-booted, so it wasn't too hard to establish Root again. Now I'm very worried that sooner or later they are going to push/force KitKat 4.4 to the S4 and I don't want it; I should have a choice to not accept it, it's my device that I paid for
Any ideas on this before KK 4.4 bites me?
Thanks

I'm confused. I've had my galaxy s3 for about a month, but only opened it about 2 days ago to get everything up and running. I still have unified search, and my phone has never prompted me to update, so I just haven't to keep my unified search for now. Weird.
If you want your unified search, root and install the apk with the full search.

Same here, actually. I think a few of the preorder phones escaped Samsung's factory with broken/incomplete firmware. Mine never got the OTA and going to settings>about>Software Update does nothing. It doesn't even check for updates, it's like the menu item is a place holder for future functionality. I assume yours is the same?
Edit: Looks like it really is just a placeholder. Watching logcat with adb while trying to check for updates only fires messages for the touch press action, but nothing further. Looks like some phones were shipped with incomplete roms (?)

[Q] How do I make sure the Nexus 7 DOES NOT EVER update to Android 4.4 by itself?

I never want my Nexus 7 to update to Android 4.4 because I need the ability to use the Flash Player in the web browsers.
I also have some very important Apps and I am afraid of the possibility of them not being compatible after I update to Android 4.4. I know some Apps become broken after an update to a newer version of Android. Some of the Apps I need haven't been updated in a long time, so they might possibly never be updated to work with Android 4.4 if any glitches occur.
Is there something I can do to make sure it never updates to Android 4.4?
My Nexus 7 has shown a message for the past few days saying that it has downloaded the update to Android 4.4 and it wants me to install it. Is there a chance that it will eventually automatically update itself without my permission? I am afraid of that happening!
I looked in the "/cache" folder to see if the update file is there for me to delete it, but the folder is empty.
Is there a way to remove the notification about the update from appearing in my notification panel? I'm afraid of accidentally clicking it one day and updating when I don't even want to!
What you do is get over the dumb Rains you created and update like a normal person would

If you add a single space to the end of your /system/build.prop file you can guarantee that no OTAs will install even if accidentally selected.
If you want to remove the notification, just go into settings->app->all
select google services framework
uncheck notifications

Not sure what version you're running, but you should be able to go to Setting, Applications (Applications Manager) whatever you have.
Find Samsung Update, stop it and uncheck notifications.

Also, the update comes from att. Greyed out in

I have ideas....
I'm really not sure if download has really been completed. You should have been prompted multiple times to accept the update, and the download.
Same goes for installing it, it requires multiple prompts and you must say continue.
So, the download gets saved in the /cache directory. If I'm right, and I should be, you should be able to power your phone down,
Then boot into stock recovery and clear cache which will delete the downloaded cache update file.
Boot into stock recovery (HOLD VOL UP+HOME+POWER)
Picture of stock recovery
http://galaxys2root.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/att-galaxys2-unroot-11-690x404.jpg
You want to choose wipe cache partition.
Then when you boot back up, race over to Settings, Applications again and stop the update service. I'd leave notifications turned on for now just to watch what the update process is attempting.
The dl started on its own. Finished too I would bet. Tried killing dl by reboot.

You have to be root to really see what's in /cache.
Stock recovery really is harmless, for the most part. If you choose data/factory reset all of your installed apps (ones that you have downloaded and installed) are torched and your settings, like Google account info, mail setup etc.
Cleaning out /cache is a good thing.
Maybe someone else will stop by and have another suggestion, but since you said root is not an option, I can't think of another way right now to stop it from bugging.

[Q] Slow installing apps

Hi
Just wondering if anyone else has this problem or if it's just my phone.
Ever since 5.0.1 upgrade my phone takes ages installing apps. 1-5mb apps that usually took like a couple seconds to install, now takes 20-25 seconds.
Bigger apps takes a lot longer to install. Seeing as updates often come in bulk, my phone can spend anywhere from 2-3 minutes to 15-16 minutes updating.
My phone is xx.401.xx . 100% stock.
Any tips on either how to fix this or if this is just something i have to live with until 5.1?
Thanks in advance.
(Did search for similar threads before posting. In case I overlooked any).
Noticed I posted in wrong forum. Can any moderator please help me put this in Q&A?
Hm i think i can see a difference compared to KK too. Its not as terrible as you described it, but the installation process definately takes longer on my M8.
But i experienced the same on my old Z3 Compact after updating to Lollipop, so maybe the installation process has been changed?
You forgot to mention that optimizing 300 stock apps takes around 30minutes instead of 5 minutes. The main reason for this lag is the art runtime vs the old dalvik.

Not entirely sure I understand what you're getting at here. I'm not talking about the initial boot up after installing 5.0.1. I'm talking about every app update from the market.
I.E. Every time facebook messenger or chrome or any other app realease an update. So this is the daily updating. Not the OTA "optimizing".

That might very well be, but that's the answer i'm looking for. Whether this is just something I have to live with, or if there's something that can be done about it.
It's agonizing waiting several minutes to use an app, when I realize there's something I need or want to play w/e.

I know. The update frequency on a couple apps is ridicilous.
However. I didn't install the OTA update. I installed the update from zip before the phone prompted. I'm way to impatient to wait for an OTA when I know I can install
Anyhow.. I guess I could try a Hard Reset. What is the best way to make sure my phone is identical after the update? I hate relying on google backup. As more often than not, I find it doesn't install all apps I had pre reset etc. Usually end up installing a ton of apps I had uninstalled, and doesn't install a lot of apps I would've wanted.
To answer your question properly; I did not do a factory reset after the install. As I did it before I even installed the update. Dunno if that makes any difference.

if you factory reset and then installed the RUU then id guess its the same as a full fresh install, the above recomendation only really applies to people who updated with the OTA.

Security update with root

So, I'm new to rooting and this is my first Nexus device.
I'm loving it and all the options but now I'm getting a notification to update.
I see all the forums about hooking it up to a computer and using commands to do it all and then rerooting.
I was looking for an easier way.
I bought a Nexus 5 to play with because I liked this one so much and when OTAs came up, it would let me download them and reboot into CWM recovery and ask if I want to flash the ZIP.
This one just boots into TWRP (No CWM for 5x) and does nothing.
I found the update as a zip here:
<https://gist.github.com/jduck/744a6c8a9042e9c792b7>
My question is: can I just download it and use TWRP to flash it or is the sequence of commands on a computer the only way to do it?
Thank you in advance for your help and I apologize for my ignorance.
Gotta start somewhere though, right?
Hi !
I personnaly use NRT from Wugfresh for my Nexus 5x and my Nexus 7 2013, both rooted.
In "model type", select Nexus 5x and your build.
In "Restore/upgrade/downgrade", select "device is on/normal", then click "Flash stock+ unroot".
Select the build you want to install, it can dl and extract it for you, and select "No Wipe Mode" in order to keep your data and apps. (don't try to put your ota file here)
Go through the steps, and in the end, hit "Root" to root again.
I know there are others methods to apply just the OTA with command lines, but I never did it cause I never took the time to learn. I should do it, maybe it's faster with command lines.
Anyway this works, even if it takes a little time, and it is kind of automatic. But I strongly recommend you try both method to find what suits you most. Or wait for someone else to reply so you'll have more points of view !
Have fun with your N5x !
I like the idea of that.
Does it reinstall the superuser app automatically?
If so, which one?
And does it redo custom recovery?
And which one for that?
Sorry for all the questions but I purchased SuperSU and I don't want it to automatically download a different one and have to go through the steps to change a superuser app.

I unmarked all modules, rebooted, and tried again but to no avail.
Other than Xposed, no mods to the kernel.

Are you using flashfire v0.28?
Xposed modifies the system so while you maybe able to get the ota it can prevent you from installing them even with flashfire.
Go to the flashfire thread and see if this is a problem with the app or because or xposed (most likely answer).
Otherwise find the ota threads and see if you can flash it through recovery (not the N version)
Yeah, it's that version of Flashfire.
I have the update zip but I'm afraid to just flash it.
I was hoping that I'd get some more help here.
Not that I don't appreciate your help.
Thank you, by the way.

Thats at the end of my ability to help you with this particular problem, I have only owned a Nexus for 2 months and they are completely diff to Samsung plus I run pure nexus rom, you may just have to use a computer.
And I really appreciate it.
I'll just use a computer and do it.
Don't want to risk trying to flash the zip and bricking but I'm still curious.
Just not curious enough.
Haha.
Got it.
In case anyone needs to know for themselves, I wanted to post it here.

I used that and it worked.
I didn't flash the Xposed zip and had to later on.
Worth it just to add it to the queue to save the time.
Everything else seems to be working fine thus far.
A few settings are changed (TinyCore was turned off and hidden apps in Smart Launcher 3 were unhidden) but that's nothing big.

That is the same manipulation I explained in post 2, but with Flashfire, without using a computer. And full automated, where with nrt you have to factory reset and root later. I'll try it next time ! And yeah, the version of SuperSu is always the latest, and if it is not, it will update via play store (I bought it as well ^^)

This one didn't unroot. Just uninstalled Xposed. Kept all my data and stuff. Apps stayed signed in even. I was afraid because I heard "factory reset" in yours. Or something to that nature. The only thing I'm having problems with now is Tapatalk told me to check my adblock settings and won't load anything. I'll have to look up what's wrong with it. Other than that, it's doing all right.
You are right and wrong, it unroots but reroots in the process. Same I did when I used nrt. And as i didn't wipe data, apps stayed sign in as Well.
But i tried flashfire on my nexus 7 and I it is way more useful and faster than nrt. I am adopting it !
